I read this on Samuel L. Jackson's IMDB: "Like Christopher Walken, he makes films for the pleasure he gets out of acting, regardless of how the film turns out." Say what you will about this movie, but you just have to love any performance in which you can tell an actor is having fun. And that's why we all love Samuel L. Jackson lol
I think he also once stated that he says yes to any role because at one point in his career he was always getting rejected and so whenever he was offered a role he would just immediately say yes to it lol.
Brad Bird could have done The Spirit justice. He tried making an animated movie of it back in the 80s, but nobody would green light it even though the script was praised. The closest we will ever see is the pencil test trailer online
Given the trajectory of animation now and the success of movies like Into the Spiderverse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I think a stylish 2.5D animated Spirit movie that is animated and colored to look like the original comic, and directed by Brad Bird would be amazing.
Common issue with Millers, it seems. Same thing happened to Dennis. He went from being the self styled erudite intellectual snark vendor, to just crudely vomiting reactionary talking points. His material just stopped being clever, like his brain had become this blunt tool. Same thing happened with Frank. He became a real hack, and has severely damaged his reputation as one of the shining talents of the 80s and 90s. Because the work he's been putting in for decades now has just been trash.

This film really screwed up the source material. For one thing, the Spirit never had any powers in the comics, he was just a regular guy. The Octopus was the biggest departure from the comics, in the comics he was a mysterious crime boss who you never see his face. The comics were very experimental for the time, as Eisner really got creative with his writing and artwork and while Ebony White's design is problematic, the character was always treated with respect by the other characters with the Spirit treating Ebony more like an unofficial ward/work partner, with the two sharing a home life in their Wildwood Cemetery headquarters and he develops beyond his comic-relief minstrel stereotype as the series progresses. Eisner later introduced other non-caricature African-American characters, such as the no-nonsense Detective Grey, who defied the media stereotypes of the day. I recommend watch the 1987 TV movie, which had 80s Flash Gordon Sam J. Jones as the Spirit.
I just imagine on the set of Iron Man 2, Sam Jackson and ScarJo were probably chatting, SLJ: “Well at least it’s better than the last comic book adaptation we were in together. And we’re not dressed up as Nazis.” ScarJo: “Yep! You got that right, and I’m Jewish.”

It seems like with this movie, Frank Miller didn't receive any type of legitimate feedback on this movie's concept and tone while making it. A lot of these mistakes seemed easily correctable and avoidable.
I was on Christmas break from my Freshman year in college when this movie came out. My high school friends back home wanted to meet up at the cinema and all watch a movie together, for old time's sake. Despite my objections, they all agreed on watching this one so I got dragged into it... Now, almost 20 years later, I still want my money back... 😅 Not to mention, I got new friends 🤣🤣🤣

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people watching this movie. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this movie for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we put it in the VCR and started watching. By the end of the week he watched it 24 times. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just sitting there blankly staring. So i decided to make a netflix account and get this movie to see if I could maybe watch alongside him. I loaded in the movie and it started playing. This movie has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This movie reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.
Well, I'm not against a child molester getting train ran on them in prison.. I wouldn't want to witness it though :P Seen wasn't that bad though. That critic was soft.
My dad and me saw this opening day and I shit you not we were the only two in there. So the best part of the experience is how we got to snark our way through the entire thing. Biggest issue with this movie can be summed up simply: PG-13 FRANK MILLER! . I believe that story that Korey told about the critic reacting to Sin City cuz I remember that was a thing back when it came out. A lot of Critics were doing the whole "How dare they release a movie like this so close to the Abu Ghraib Torture Photos".
Funny thing is, I actually drew Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck as the Spirit and the Octopus respectively, and both are fighting each other with a bat and a sink. 😁😂🤣
There’s a “The Spirit” made for TV movie, from the late 80’s. It was intended as a pilot and stars Flash Gordon in the title role. Here’s the thing. Even though it never went to series, it is still easily 10x better than this AAA misstep. Not entirely sure, but I think it can be seen on UA-cam. Is definitely worth the watch.
8:58 Central City?!! The Flash says- stay off his turf! Or you're going to get drive by. No cars or guns will be used. Just Barry and his speedster family running on foot- whipping out tic-tacs!!
Even though it wasn't on purpose this movie reminded me of the old school superhero shows I grew up watching. Auto Man, Manimal, The Phoenix and a list of others. They are 1 or 2 steps from being really good, but they just miss somethings, this movie was missing direction. It had so much potential however in the end it was entertaining mostly for the wrong reasons but enough that I bought the dvd and still pop it in every once in a while, just to laugh.
This was sad, because Frank Miller adored Eisner and the spirit and sadly had no clue what he was doing when he made the movie. I lost my original yt account when I uploaded 3 clips that were shown at comicon and commented on how absurd they looked. Studio copyright struck me.

The first thing I said to my dad after we got out of this dogshit, after a long and angry 5 minute silence: "Well, at least it's good to see the dad from Wonder Years still working?"
This movie seems to be the definition of style over substance. The look and feel of it is nice, but what characters want, who they are, and how this world works is not made clear or made interesting. Oh well 🤷🏾♂ at least Sam Jackson looks like he's having a lot of fun.
Kung Fu Hustle is a decent movie - it does have character development. I can see how Americans might find the comedy stupid - but if you're familiar with star/director Stephen Chow, it's brilliant. He created a genre called "mou lei tou" cinema, which translates to empty headed comedy. It's meant to be silly.
@@weilim10 But... Comparisons to Looney Tunes aren't derogatory, it's just meant to provide a basis for how zany the action can get, 2022's The Bad Guys got similar comparisons yet no one will say it's a bad movie... And even then, the whole scene where the landlady chases the protagonist is a straight-up homage to the Coyote and Roadrunner's chases with the landlady crashing into a billboard and slowly sliding down!
@@michaelriverside1139 my bad. In the Twitch chat a few people were asking the crew to roast Kung Fu Hustle. KFH is good but it is not my favorite Chow comedy - that would be Shaolin Soccer.
I feel like you guys would enjoy the 90’s film The Rocketeer, this was when Disney was doing non Marvel comic adaptation. It flopped at the box office but deserves at much bigger cult following
Oh boy a Frank Miller the guy that made All star batman and Robin and it was cancelled by 2008. There’s no body gonna be saying “I’m the God damn batman” in this movie are they?
It’s funny cause when this was in theaters..my grandparents movie hopped into this one. Not because they wanted to watch..because there was only 1 person in the auditorium and knew they could get away with it💀
Sara Paulson the one who played as the spirit and Eva Mendes their chemistry of all three remind of the relationship that was like offa A Low Down Dirty Shame between Keenan Ivory Wayans, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Sally Richardson
As a black man I'm so conflicted on The Spirit. It's not relevant for this post but I feel bad for wanting this film to fail and send the character back to obscurity. We middle aged black people have a word for that. Trifling. I was being trifling. Now I wish it had succeeded if nothing else then for the careers involved.
@@ninjanibba4259 Because while reading the comic book the depiction of Ebony White extremely problematic. This isn't usually a problem no matter how racist the era because black people were invisible in popular literature and films. Out of sight out of mind but that's not the case with Spirt it front and center
Did they re-review Last of Us episode 9, I just wanna hear Martin and Billy's thoughts on the finale and if Joel was right hehe. Glad they are back on twitch
Confession time I was obsessed with this film when it came out the style alone had me hooked I would quote it constantly I bought the figures he’ll I even dressed up on Halloween as the Spirit complete with homemade face mask made out of cardboard and a sharpie (I’ve grown since then lol)
It’s okay. I was a fan of Simple Plan and Linkin Park. I used to watch Bleach AMVs on 2007 UA-cam to their songs. Now I just laugh thinking what a dumb edgy teen I was.
Note on the cover at 3:00 how creator Will Eisner signed; very carefully in the style of another legendary cartoonist. "The Spirit" was one of the first Sunday Newspaper comics; it was actually an 8-page insert in about 20 papers.
"The Spirit Section" was 16 pages, The Spirit stories were seven pages, with the rest of the section featuring "Mr Mystic" and "Lady Luck". Those twenty papers had a circulation of about five million.
For what it's worth, Miller made this film out of a labor of love. Will Eisner is not only on the Mt. Rushmore of comics creators, but one of Miller's direct mentors. I cant speak the veracity of this next quote, but I've heard it attributed to Miller. "I didnt believe i was the man for the job. Honestly, I dont think anyone could truly capture what Will created with the comics on film. But if anyone was gonna butcher it then it should be me". I think he sincerely saw it as a loving tribute to his mentor. What a crazy guy.
43:47 but then, how good are Johansson & Mendes, _really,_ if they weren’t able to “act around/beyond” Frank Miller’s shit (or non-existent) direction🤔 You can’t even excuse it by saying Sam Jackson has so much more experience since Paulson is closer to Johansson’s & Mendes’ age groups and performed so much better (according to the DT guys here). Same for Gabriel Macht; evidence of being more of a pretty face than a capable actor🤷🏾♀️ FWIW: the pencil screen test is actually pretty interesting and its voice actors are 100x better than these well-known Hollywood types
I remember how pissed off people were with The Spirit teaser trailer using the theme song from The Untouchables movie. He also used the line from Dick Tracy “I’m on my way”. People were groaning, how much of a rip-off it sounded like .
When I went to see this, everyone in the theater at one point just unanimously agreed this movie was a POS and openly started talking shit to the movie screen as a running commentary.
This is just a theory, but if Robert Rodriguez was involved with the directing, it might have been better. Frank Miller, on his own, was not a great idea
I read this on Samuel L. Jackson's IMDB: "Like Christopher Walken, he makes films for the pleasure he gets out of acting, regardless of how the film turns out."

I wish the old pulp heroes like Dick Tracy, The Spirit, and The Phantom would get adapted by a Pixar-standard studio
They're too busy with sequels.
This movie seems to be the definition of style over substance. The look and feel of it is nice, but what characters want, who they are, and how this world works is not made clear or made interesting. Oh well 🤷🏾♂ at least Sam Jackson looks like he's having a lot of fun.
Yo martin the drip. GOD DAMN
That movie was funny intentionally and unintentionally I loved it 😂😂😂
This and Kung-Fu Hustle are the best live-action Looney Tunes' movies ever made.
The spirit is one of the few movies I've ever walked out of... and I was just a dumb kid at the time
This movie makes Batman and Robin look like Citizen Kane.
The best part was when Eva Mendes printed out those copies of her peach.
26:55 "ass grass" lol
Melting the kitten is the same thing Judge Doom did to that cartoon baby shoe.
I feel like you guys would enjoy the 90’s film The Rocketeer, this was when Disney was doing non Marvel comic adaptation. It flopped at the box office but deserves at much bigger cult following
Double Toasted still funny, still entertaining, still great it's a full price for me
Oh boy a Frank Miller the guy that made All star batman and Robin and it was cancelled by 2008. There’s no body gonna be saying “I’m the God damn batman” in this movie are they?
Brad Bird would made a better movie like he planned
I love this movie because of how goofy it is. I like the 1987 version with Sam Jones. Without this movie, I wouldn't know who The Spirit is.
As bad as this film is, it definitely looks cool. When Sin City took the world by storm, even Mobb Deep did a video with that style.
While this movie was bad, it sure was entertaining, because of Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. It was like a low rent Sin City.
TERRANCE OUT
Not Billy dying in the intro ☠️☠️☠️☠️
This gonna be good
As a black man I'm so conflicted on The Spirit. It's not relevant for this post but I feel bad for wanting this film to fail and send the character back to obscurity. We middle aged black people have a word for that. Trifling. I was being trifling. Now I wish it had succeeded if nothing else then for the careers involved.
I don't know why you're bringing up you're ethnicity
@@ninjanibba4259 Because while reading the comic book the depiction of Ebony White extremely problematic. This isn't usually a problem no matter how racist the era because black people were invisible in popular literature and films. Out of sight out of mind but that's not the case with Spirt it front and center
Billy's laugh is my spirit animal LOL!
I’ve been hoping y’all would jump on this one. Thank you❤❤❤
The movie had me rolling. Was it silly, yeah. Still had a good time with it.
Me too this one of my guilty pleasures
Wow
It’s okay. I was a fan of Simple Plan and Linkin Park. I used to watch Bleach AMVs on 2007 UA-cam to their songs. Now I just laugh thinking what a dumb edgy teen I was.
@@jamiekamihachi3135 The AMV’s with the Drowning Pool,Disturbed,Metallica, or Tenacious D in the background yeah I been there as well
Note on the cover at 3:00 how creator Will Eisner signed; very carefully in the style of another legendary cartoonist.
Gabreil Macht would be a dope Batman.
Martin looked good today. Beard on point!
You guys should review surviving the game starting ice tea Gary busey
For what it's worth, Miller made this film out of a labor of love. Will Eisner is not only on the Mt. Rushmore of comics creators, but one of Miller's direct mentors. I cant speak the veracity of this next quote, but I've heard it attributed to Miller. "I didnt believe i was the man for the job. Honestly, I dont think anyone could truly capture what Will created with the comics on film. But if anyone was gonna butcher it then it should be me". I think he sincerely saw it as a loving tribute to his mentor. What a crazy guy.
Billy got a top 5 all time laugh
Forget Deadpool, this is the funniest superhero movie of all time. Wade Wilson never made me laugh as much as the Octopus did lol
Same for Gabriel Macht; evidence of being more of a pretty face than a capable actor🤷🏾♀️
FWIW: the pencil screen test is actually pretty interesting and its voice actors are 100x better than these well-known Hollywood types
I remember how pissed off people were with The Spirit teaser trailer using the theme song from The Untouchables movie. He also used the line from Dick Tracy
“I’m on my way”.
People were groaning, how much of a rip-off it sounded like .
When I went to see this, everyone in the theater at one point just unanimously agreed this movie was a POS and openly started talking shit to the movie screen as a running commentary.
He was Literally Yosemite Sam, hat coat and guns 😂... wait Yosemite Sam Jackson 😮
Back then, when I saw this movie, I thought a black Nazi was a bit too unbelievable.
But wow, what an innocent time.
This is just a theory, but if Robert Rodriguez was involved with the directing, it might have been better. Frank Miller, on his own, was not a great idea
