I only wish my builder hung doors this way. Or shoot, would have been happy if shims were used. Already had to pull front door apart on 4 mo old house only to find no shims. Meaning no doors have shims if the heaviest and most important one in the house didnt have them.
I appreciate the unedited video, and I hope it's easier to make and post. Honestly, I'd prefer to see more "mistakes" like that at 2:30, even if they are minor and easy to fix like that, and even if they are staged. Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do.
It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
I like the unedited format for relatively quick jobs like this because it lets the viewer see whatever mistakes you might make and how a pro would go about fixing them easily. Even if you don’t make all the possible mistakes for a job in your video, I think it’s helpful to a weekend warrior’s mindset when you’re pretty non-chalant about the ones you do make. Keep it up
I am old enough to be your father and have been a DIY’er for 50 years. Thank you for the tip with the blocks, it will save me from many headaches in the future. Old dogs, new tricks 👍.
Unedited content is where it’s at! I do handyman work and love seeing how people work thru the hiccups and challenges that come with remodels and installs. Thanks for your content…. I’ve learned tons of tips from you and Greg!
Loved this format Kyle @rrbuildings ! Something that I don't believe you mentioned that is extremely important and always my first step when hanging doors - Check the floor for level before you set any jambs!! If it's out, adjust for the out of level by cutting the leg of the jamb that's high. I'm sure you do this but I don't think you mentioned this. Great content as always!
When the framer does a good job, it makes hanging the doors that much easier. Who did your framing, anyway? Oh, it was you! Your customers are getting quality work. It shows in every detail.
Absolutely top notch! T. O. House did one where the floor was 1" off, not common but useful. Your video is pretty much what I will face. Again Great Job!
All your videos are awesome and I love the fact your so transparent in the work you do and don’t sugarcoat anything, keep up the great work….hello Greg
I've been installing doors for a long time and never thought about putting the blocks on the sheetrock to hold the door in place. Glad I watched this and learned a new technique to improve efficiency. Keep up the good work!
A buddy and I just spent wayyyy too much time installing a prehung door. We should have watched this first. Thanks for thinking about people like us and providing this info. I need to do one at my own house soon and I'm going to do it by myself since I have confidence now!
Unedited is the way to go. Make sure to put that on your titles again. That’s why I clicked and why I hung around. Great video. Mistakes make it so much more relatable. Keep it up!
Great method when the RO is sound like you said. More than half the times it’s installing a door into an old opening many times the doors, not the same thickness as the wall for whatever reasons but that surely is a nice KISS method.
the best I have seen as of now, good job, he didnt mention the the hinge screws he replace were longer that the original screw, which makes the install sturdier, good job
Thanks for the tips, Kyle! I think I watched through this video at least 3 times while hanging 5 doors in my basement project. The stop blocks and the laser were a huge help. The only thing I had to work out for myself is checking if the framing isn't plumb in/out rather than left/right. So I did have to break out the level for that part rather than relying solely on the laser. I blame that on my framers though!
Best pre-hung door install video I've seen. Keeps it simple and quick-I like the use of the laser. I'm doing a basement finish, and my carpenter is too busy so I"ll be doing doors myself. I would love to also see tricks for trimming the jambs for uneven floors.
Damn, the pros make it look so easy... I recently finished my first ground up post frame building (12 x 22 foot shop) and it has one door. That darn thing took me more than an hour to install. This took Kyle 10 minutes ;/ Awesome advice and great tips!
Nice way to install…. I started using trim screws because I didn’t want to buy a new 15 gauge nailer. Using your method with the couple nails and then shimming to your line worked great. Not sure why I hadn’t thought to do it that way. I’ve been holding shims while putting in a screw, checking for plumb, adjusting, etc. I will now just put in a few screws and loosen/tighten to laser line… go back and fill in with shims. Thanks for all your videos… you guys do great work 👍
After 35 years of trimming, I thought I would be able to add some little trick for you, but you covered it perfectly, short of buying an expensive door install jig and dang it, I still forget to take those shipping dongles out more often than not LOL. On a side note, I check the door stops at this time as well, just in case the bottoms aren't parallel to each other. 👍✌brother
Great Video Kyle. It was great because it shows real world without edits. People need to have an understanding what it really takes to install doors. I was always taught never to put shims behind hinges.
I’ve been hanging full jambs with blocks like that for 30 + years. I have lasers but I can still hang a door faster with my Stabila. One recommendation. Set your door up on blocks to allow for your finished flooring. That way you don’t have to cut down your jambs later. 1/2” for carpet etc. Good video for those just getting started though.
Always happy to learn new tricks of the trade. Perfectly plumb (perfectly level?). I taught a young man that term once - afterwards he would go around saying; "it's so plumb it's cherry". My kind of humor.
Yes, you hit the nail on the head when you said "we did the door jamb openings" so we know they are plumb and square. That's exactly why you want to build that way starting all the way back down to the foundation, square, level etc. It makes every step easier and less time consuming as the build continues to the next part of construction. Had those door jambs been out of square, life installing this prehung would have been more involved and the video twice as long, no doubt at all. My observation with prehung doors or not is shimming enough locations so the jambs are solid with the framing as I have seen several builds where the door jambs shake and move as the door swings open or closed, especially when its being closed. Great point of view, thanks Kyle/Greg.
I LOVE unedited content because you really learn and the teaching skills are clean and true. Ive seen a lot of ways to hang a door but this method is more akin to what I would do or would like to do Thanks for the new direction . Also like the fact that you got right into hanging it with not a lot of prep work it literally took you the time it took to record this video like 12 min awesome!
Pro tip from an old time carpenter. use your shims to level the hinge side of the door jamb prior to installing. that way you have a perfect side to measure/level/plumb from.
Nice job. I have been in construction for 30 years now and I have nothing bad to say about your method. I would suggest using an oscillating tool to cut your shims off. I just started doing that instead of scribing them with my knife and it is so much easier. 😁👍
Yep. Couldn’t count the number of doors Ive reset because some guy decided a 18 gauge nail was going to keep the frame in the opening after 5 to 10 yrs of operation. 15 is the go too for me. Just cant get rid of my Bostich air nailer. It’s a beast.. I was hoping for a few tips on installing door stops as a 1 man show. Most if not all my doors are pre built slab and jamb. door stops are installed after.
Great install. We would really like to see how to hang a door on a poorly framed opening. Working with a perfectly framed opening appears to easy. But the crooked wall, slanted openings are some of the issues that pop up more than you would think.
Awesome!!! The timing on this is insane... I am about to hang 5x Pre Hung Doors for the first time in a reno. Learned a few little tips. Thanks from Au!
The unedited format is great. Was a good tutorial for someone like me who isn't in the trades but works on their house and installs doors, windows, does a bit of framing. Thanks
Looked great. I would love to see an example where the door frame isn't necessarily the best. Was trying to hang a door last night and on the jamb side the top and bottom are not flush with the drywall so that the door can hit the stop perfectly all the way down. If I try to make it flush with the drwall it is just hitting the top first.
Great technique. I started using the block method a few years ago and wouldn't do it any other way. I also like the use of the laser and not having to fumble around with a level, I'll just have to buy a laser now.
always fun watching you, ima tool nutter also, if there’s a tool for that, i want it. one thing we ALSO do is ask what flooring is going in and if possible ask for a sample of it. then we use that to shim all the door jambs up for the perfect look. and YES the unedited version is a good one bc it shows us what mistakes or small issues we can expect. I constantly fight what I call “just get it done framers” who give me 2.5 or some 3.5” over frames! Oh also I like your method I use Ply squares 8th, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” , 3/4”, all @ 3.5” squares & those are my shims for the most part? Some shims I make at 8” long & 2” wide out of cedar post I buy and run on my shim jig and big cabinet saw in my converted shop/ garage for my finish contractor little business !
That laser sure makes it easier (and more efficient)! Otherwise you’re trying to hold the big level & manipulate shims - need another hand. Tried a plumb bob once. Went back to the level. But the laser is the answer.
They'll just ignore you. That's my experience at least. Everyone thinks a new idea is stupid. Heck, I work with people who think doing it the correct way is stupid, preferring instead some version of hill-billy winging it that results in C+ quality and a lot more hassle.

Well done! One thing I like to do is take the stops off. Usually they come to the job tacked on anyways. That way I can nail/ screw behind them. Also when I reinstall them after lockset is on I can fit them perfectly against the door. Just my 2cents

I liked the tip for the blocks that keep it in place before starting to plum it. Please keep that type of videos coming!
i liked the stops idea. but like you said at the end. your walls are straight. but the stops will help me in the future.
This format of video for this content definitely makes sense. Will be coming back to this video when I'm installing my doors!

The ole plug stuck in the jamb trick. Great video and good tips. I am going to use the block tips! Thanks
Yes simple and quick. Yes enjoy unedited
Awesome video. Learned a new trick with the shim between the door and jamb on the strike side when checking the reveal. Thanks!
Man, that was super efficient. I've been doing this for a long time old school way. That Lazer is the cats meow. Thanks for your help. 👍🏼👍🏼

interesting... I wonder why?
@@RRBuildings I feel you have a better ability to adjust hinge gap much better by not putting shims behind a hinge
Thanks for the unedited video. Another reason why I like your work.

I found this helpful thanks for demonstrating how to solo hang a door
Glad it helped

If you know what flooring is going in you can shim the jam up off the floor too so you don't have to cut it up later.

Normally I build and hang my own doors, but man is it easier to just buy pre-hung doors! Great tutorial, love the tips
I like it! I wish I had a laser level to do this. Thanks for the video
I can't even find all my tools in the time it took you to hang that door. I'm banking it's going to take me most of tomorrow to put my door in. Fun.

Most prehung doors that I do in the northwest do not have removable stops. For the most part doors that do are considered very low quality.
@@zacharybaker695 just the opposite in my case
Northeast here, stops are not removable
