Tattoo Line Work For Beginners! Apprentice vs Pro Tattooist!

- In this video 'Tattoo Line Work For Beginners' I follow up from a previous video I released a while ago to fill any gaps in information so you can confidently move forward to tattoo some nice strong lines.
This video covers a topic which has never been discussed which not only demonstrates the practical side of tattooing linework, shows you exactly why you're not getting ink into the skin but also delves into the mindset of an apprentice beginner tattooist and a pro tattooist and examines how your work can be dramatically effected just by approaching a tattoo with the wrong frame of mind.
To get the very most out of this video I strongly recommend you watch the original first from this link and then come back to watch this one:

Thank you so much! Shout out for the Super Thanks! You’ll be mentioned in the next upload!
The way you describe the panic we all feel when we are first starting made me laugh so hard. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I definitely felt that description of it!
Like Rick and Morty vibes
Definitely 😹
I have been tattooing (or learning) for just over two years now and recently accepted a job offer to work in one of the countries best tattoo studios (Uruguay). I just want to say thank you Jono. My journey is still new and only beginning, but without your videos (and a few others) I may not have progressed this fast. Great content and excellent info as always. Cheers mate 🤙
Thank you, it’s feedback like this that makes the channel worth it. Thanks for watching!
How's it going?
@@jordanthomas1630 Great, thanks for asking!
Hear hear!🍻

"and lose the will to live." This guy gets it
When Jono said...
You wipe the tattoo off, loose the stencile and your will to live! Haha
Man...we all know that feeling for sure.
Love your channel my friend!
Seriously, I’m a senior software engineer. I don’t know how I got to this channel but now I’m obsessed with tattooing dragon skin in my apartment and giving myself a few small tattoos. This is such good information!
Thanks for watching!
I'm an electrician but this channel has me hooked
Im a heavy duty tow operator and am officially your apprentice from a distance via you tube ive tattooed 4 of my coworkers with the help of your videos lol
Thank you so much for this! I'd been struggling with my tattoos (only been doing it around 2 months) and I couldn't understand why. I was about ready to just give up, but after watching this I can see now what I've been doing wrong. I honestly can't thank you enough.
I have been tattooing for 1.5year and your tutorials helped me so much from the very beginning of my career. You're amazing, I can't thank you enough ❤️
I’m so glad the channel has helped you out. Thanks for your continued support!
Are you selling fake skins or you just messing around with tattooing? Just curious?
Um, yea, we need more people like you in the world who are willing to teach❤
I appreciate and resonate with that video. Last year I started tattooing and my confidence was high, I was pulling clean lines, doing good job for an apprentice, until I moved overseas, and had to start all over again (building a new clientele, finding a studio). It destroyed my confidence in my practice (tattooing less than I used to do), in my capacity of producing good art and clean tattoos. Since then I’ve almost quit tattooing, but your video just gave me a reminder that, with patience and practice, I can give myself the opportunity to pull off some awesome tattoos. I’m planning to start over with an apprenticeship in a parlor. Thank you for your video Jono. Your content has always been useful and very informative.
Sounds made up
Definitely sounds made I up , I agree
@@jamester000 I’ve anxiety, and it is playing a strong part in my confidence in my work. I don’t need to justify myself to strangers, just because you don’t have experienced something doesn’t means it’s made up :))
I’m so grateful for all the support you’ve given us for free
You’re explaining everything so well
Man, the flashbacks to my early 20s when you were doing that 'apprentice' line. Eeeeeek! I appreciate your content so much, Jono. You are a gem, and missed. Thank you for leaving this legacy of knowledge for the world.
Great Video. The Part with the mindset was great. Its hard to know all the important stuff but forget about everything because of the inner panic. Even now, after some years of tattooing I still deal with this feelings and the bitter thoughts while I do my work. Its nice that other artists start talking about this fact.
I honestly have never thought about the mindset... thank you so much. Your videos are really helpful
Learning SOOO much from your channel Jono...much appreciated.
I appreciate the live demonstration of how a beginner would approach! Although I was cringing in pain the entire time 😂 it was extremely useful to see the common mistakes and doubts that come with pulling a clean line
I never felt panic or fear when i started practicing! I jumped right in onto skin and it turned out great!
Lucky..
@@MrHotJalapeno209 its all a mental game brother!
Thats what i like to hear - what sho
p do you work at??
Thank you. Definitely, concentration and confidence are important keys.
Damn bro, thank you so much for this. The stress levels can really wreak havoc on apprentices, I know it did for me. I have a lot to learn still but people underestimate tattooing so much. It is insanely hard to master.
People taking stick and poke artists for granted is really sad but machine artists too that's insane people think it's so easy
It makes a lot of sense iv only just started learning on fake skin on my first attempt I was making lil mistakes as I kept thinking I was doing it right but looking at the lines it wasn’t going on there properly but know iv watched ur content it has shown me where I’m going wrong I’m not to bad I just need to get the lines straight with constancy which it is hard at first it all comes with the practice and patience but I’ll get there iv only just started but watching this content has made things easier to understand
Only been tattooing for a couple weeks now. After watching this video and a couple others of yours, I already saw big improvements on my next practice session! Thank you for all the great tips!
Im glad the channel is helping you out. Thanks for watching!
Watching this to see what kind of artist did my first tattoo. Already knew it, but he was an absolute PRO! 👏
Great Video J. Rest in paradise 🙏 ✨️
Always appreciate your videos, I've improved in my practice sessions a lot just from mindset changes.
I’m glad the channel is helping you out. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this! From all the victims of amateur tattooists from here on out! Hopefully they will improve their skill! Because I'm tired of fixing their messes!! Respect Jono!!!
Thank you so much!! Super thanksssss!!! Your tips are GOLD!!
rweally loved this on specially cuz u did it on an actual skin .just awsomeeeeee
Thanks! I always listen closely to your explanations. Very detailed.
Thank you so much. That's extremely kind of you. You'll be mentioned on the next upload
this helped me so much to see what i was doing wrong! thank you so much
Hi Jono, as a fresh starter, I finally found your channel ❤️ no need to fast forward it, it's good and enough oh man ❤️ thank you ❤️
Im glad its helping you out! Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching!
Fake skin and human sking are totally different. I get no experience practicing on fake skin at all. I had to practoce on myself and family members
Just wanted to say thanks man, your videos rock and are super helpful. Plus you seem like a really genuine and nice guy. Thank you brotha
Thank you I appreciate that!
No problem man. I loved how you described the panic you felt when you first started out. Man I can totally relate
Your apprentice impression gave me severe ptsd lol had a good laugh about it 😂 thanks a lot for continuously sharing valuable information with us and making us safer and calmer artists :) i know you said not to practice on human skin but i've devoted the front of my legs to that purpose a couple years ago and thanks to your tips i'm really proud of how they're starting to turn out ✒️
Yeah the apprentice mindset is something that will always give me chills when I think back 😅 As for practicing on yourself I don’t really see any issues with that tbh. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Jono love your live examples
Thanks for watching!
omg this Saturday I'll tattoo someone for the first time and I'm so nervous so I'm watching this over and over again
Good luck! Thanks for watching!
I am literally just starting out. Tried my first attempts at lines last night on the cheap fake skin that came with my kit. I had already been pre-warned about cheap fake skin so i expected terrible results, and was not dissapointed in that warning. Fake skin just does not act like real. I plan to get pig skins from a local meat shop for practice so I can practice on real skin. Great info and thanks!
Love these videos my quality and technique has Improved tremendously
I’m glad the channel is helping you out. Thanks for watching!
spot on my friend! This was me with my first finger tats on myself 🤘🤣
You are a great channel and I love watching your videos!
Thank you I really appreciate that!
I appreciate this video a ton! I’ve literally only been tattooing for 2 weeks, I’ve gone against what you said about practicing on human skin and done a few on myself, my partner and mum also wanted some small ones😂 I did a decent thigh piece on myself and have already been offered an apprenticeship but still I struggle to pull off one pass lines consistently. I can do it just very far from every time. I’m getting more confident now for sure but still got a ways to improve, I know a lot of the people at this shop since I get my stuff done there usually and they are super excited to show me the ropes🤙🏼
Tattooin skin is the best experience you will ever get. I have been tattooing for 1 year and fakes skin is so much easier to miss mistakes. Its very easy to tattoo fake skin and get crisp lines. Soon as you go to real skin its totally different. Practice on yourself and close friends or family that are willing to let you tattooo them and maybe even mess up ! My best friend has let me cover his leg already and its helped me so much to determine depths ! Especially because his skin is actually the hardest to tattoo(super thin skin with 0 water retention. Soon as i tattooed someone other than him my lines came out so smooth 🤟. Hope you make more progress with your tattoos !
@@Stong1337 love to hear it! Yep my partner has given up her leg for me so I’ve been doing all sorts of patchwork all over it, some very clean tattoos, some not so much but she doesn’t care hahaha, also done a few on my mum and other friends, and started covering myself😂 I’m slowing myself down a bit as I have an award winning tattooist taking me under his wing through an apprenticeship soon as his advice was to blast through a sketch pad with all sorts of different sketches, and tattoo my best looking work on myself or a friend😁
I did the same I can't even lie 😂 but it has taught me soooo much
I enjoy your videos and I'm super glad to have found you on here.
Thanks for watching!
I thank you so so much bro this really helps me get started on my journey
Awesome Video im new to Tattooing and this was helpful
I’ve been tattooing (learning) for about 4 years still learning these videos are perfect
I really appreciate you. You're a very talented speaker. You obviously know what you're talking about. I've never actually tattooed at all. I bought a kit. I wished I would have researched better, MAYBE! watch these types of videos and have a little bit more education or heads up on what to get, but it is what it is at this moment. It's good for the basics, but when I'm better learned and educated, I will definitely get a better and more efficient pro-kit. You give great directions on how to set it up and move forward to using it. I love the videos. You take care. And I'm really looking forward to seeing your future videos. VENUS
Thank you I appreciate that!
Being confident it's very important, practice skin it's nice to improve your skills in a technical job like this....but some day some way you have to hit a friend or yourself by doing a shit line.... 😁😁😁😁
Thanks very informative as always
Hey Jono I know nothing but a very thi later of Vaso over the dried stencil and I say dry knowing not a thing but this protects the stencil depending on your wipe heh she's all about commitment needles in ....you are now committed 🤘✌️
Thanks Jono, really enjoying your advice
Thanks for watching!
I love the visuals
Do you have a new tattoo on your throat?? 😍 Nice vid once again - thanks Jono, appreciate it! 😊
Great video!! As always!

Wowwww thank you so much for this video very informative...
Super thanks!you helps alot..
I'm just learning on been doing it for about a week now did a few on me. My wife's turned out better mine did on my own body I have the same issue of wiping ans the line dissapearing. Got to the point I wanted to just sell everything. I'm gonna keep trying I got shaders today so this should be interesting
Hello Jono I am a big fan!! I have been a drawer for as long as I can remember and people tell me I am very good. I would love to know the steps to take to become a apprentice?? Thanks and awesome work!!
Great video! If you don’t mind would you make a tutorial/video with tips on how to tattoo yourself and get the right technique ie; tattooing your own arm correctly?
Ill see what i can do. Thanks for watching!
Super thank you, your video was very helpful
Brilliant Demonstration ofthe mindset! the information seems to be very well structured and thought out, one but: the distracting background music at the beginning was making it impossible for me to follow you talking. i appreciate the vibe of it, but i was so relieved when it stopped, and the only reason i didn´t click away before the music ended, was cause i came here to the comment section to write this comment. :D I am really glad I stuck around, cause your visualisations are brilliant, and you explain stuff in detail, but without unnneded repetitions. love it! thank you for your great content!
Hi, first thxx for your amazing explain , it was a pleasure for me to watch your demonstrations, my question is : the angle of my needel how can I control it ? How is the degree must be angle ? Thank you
Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the pointers
I just got my practice kit today and did a bit of lines earlier and it frustrates me 'cause I can't get the hang of it and my lines are extremely messy. I hope I can get used to it tomorrow
Your apprentice version makes me nervous. I just started on actual skin but I don’t think I’ve ever done that bAd even on my practice skin🥲I often find myself not going deep enough bc I’m terrified of causing a blowout causing me to have to go over lines again. Luckily I’m pretty confident going over lines but this videos was very helpful as I was having a bit of a hard time but turns out I just need to trust myself with the needle depth.
Thanks mate , wouldn’t be here without you so it’s not much but a little something
Thank you so much! You've been added to the next upload for a shout out!
Hey, just discoverd your channel and I'm addicted already :)
I have no experience and want to learn. Probably a noob question ;) While watching I was wondering if there is a difference if you drag the line (from B to A) ...
I love 99.9 % of the info you’ve given these young artists who are watching to learn how to NOT screw up ppls tattoos.. but technically I think you could have explained why you “Pull” the line line vs. pushing it as you did in the apprentice section of the video.. I know the tattooers who taught me either purposely left that part out or just didn’t fully understand the techniques.. when I figured it out on my owe later it changed my line game..but over all great video..
Why do you pull and not push? Sorry complete beginner here trying to learn :)
I’ve only been at this for a couple of weeks and these videos have helped me so much already! However, I have no problem with my line work on fake skin, it’s real skin that I’m really struggling with. And I can only practice on myself so many times lol
Yes nothing really compares to tattooing real skin. Good luck with it all!
@@JonoSmithTattoo Then why tell people NOT to tattoo on real skin in this video bro???
@@freedomfighter6838ecause you need to get a feeling for the machine first, but you do you and start messing people up. You dumdum
@@freedomfighter6838it’s common sense. You need to ease your hand and control the basic technique before you jump in onto real skin which you can heavily damage if you’re not careful. I’ve been tattooing for 15 years and I wish I practiced on more fake skin because I’ve butchered a few of my friends 😂
Super thanks !! 🫶🏼
Never went over machine speed the linear should be own one of the main reasons I watched the video ! So future reference cover everything it takes to execute that line no shade but for people who are looking for particular details, it will help you on your explanations on the video however, it was great video I watched from beginning to end
You made pulling that line feel like diffusing a bomb, i’m literally sweating after watching that
Great vid
Awesome info Jono👍thanks mate
Thank you!

Thank you for the new upload 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, we love Jono!
You're in my apprenticeship book categorized in the professors section. I have a select few teachers.(I'm older and very choosy with how i spend my time)
I'm hoping to one day get your autograph.
I've watched a great many of your videos. Your videos have been very instructional and have helped with my progression greatly. Two years ago and going strong ... Still hungry.
The only thing I can do is thank you, SO,
Thank you Jono!
Do you ever get to the states? Ohio specifically? 👍😎
And Thank you to your volunteer 😬
Wow thank you for your awesome comment! You’re way too kind! My partner and I have big plans to do a lot of tattoo related travelling in the future so I’m sure our paths will cross at some point. Thanks for supporting the channel, I really appreciate it!
Least faded tattoo in my body was my first time tattooing on skin and was done with no name china ink
Haha this is exactly how I was when I was practicing. My thighs too are sacrificed and this is near pin point perfect of what it feels like as an apprentice. Only thing you forgot was the wobbly shaky assed hand haha regards from Yorkshire 👍👍
Aww yes the shakes! Good call on that one. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!
Hey Jono, what machine would you recommend that is close to a professional. Im on disability and I'm getting into this field cause I love to draw. I've been tattooing for 7 months now. I love it. I can see myself being a professional one day. I'm working hard like 3 hours 4 hours a day. Im starting to notice small improvements. I'm not putting the cart before the horse. From watching your videos I've gotten a lot of help from them. They have this program here in the states that is 15,000$ to enter that want 3,900 down and 390$ a month in on a fixed budget so I'm basically teaching myself watching your videos,
Jono, Thank you for another great video, especially for those of us still learning to tattoo and not yet working in a tattoo shop. One problem that I have is not being able to buy the Envy gen 2 tattoo cartridges because Tat Soul will not sell needle cartridges unless you work in a tattoo shop. Do you have any suggestions that can help me? Thanks 🙏poppy
Thanks Poppy. You should be able to buy too quality cartridges from any reputable tattoo supplier with no issues.
Thank you !!!
Thanks!
Omg thanks you're a boss! I can't help but go ahead and do myself. I've never had any tats before. The commitment scared me. Now I have end stage heart failure and I don't want any serious surgeries, transplant or defibrillator. I want to be covered in ink when I die. I've got scars from road rash to chainsaws. Lol I drink and stuff. Quality over Quantity. If I tattoo over a fake tattoo is that ok? How much are my "Conditions" really affecting my skin's ability to hold ink?
Great shirt!
Oh my god 3.09 mins then it gets started 🤔great vid good info thank you.
Thank you 🙏
I related so much, and so hard on the first few senteces you've said, and lost the will to live. 😭😂
What voltage do you use for pulling good, bold lines?
You are a star. Thank you so much, always so professional and informative!
Thanks for watching!
Dziękujemy.
How do you feel about the DYNAMIC BLK (triple black) instead of the regular?
Oh wow the thing is I thought I was doing it wrong because I was too confident and bold from beginning and then I got little sad that my line didn't go as solid as on draft but I looked at that straight line and it looks exactly like mine(maybe because it's skin it can't be too straight as I imagined) also while being confident is good yeah I need practice on timing because sometimes I hurry
super thanks,,,
I am just starting learning how to tattoo on a real skin, there is different info everywhere about what you put on the skin before you start tatooing. Is this a good thing to put vaseline on the skin before you start? Because I hear it everywhere but it sounds wrong
TnT make amazing cartridges I went from envy to TnT and haven't looked back
Thanks
Thank you so much! Shout out for the Super Thanks! You’ll be mentioned in the next upload!
Subbed!
Trying to come out the nervous apprentice stage !! Thank you soo much for this video great tips ! 🫶🏼
Thanks for watching! Good luck with it all!
I've recently been tattooing for just under 2 years now and for me it's always been difficult to purchase genuine 100% professional quality supplies. most won't sell to "newbies" so we have to work with what we have access too and have to make it work. with that being said it's about committing and really learning how to work with what you have and not ith the high price hardly accessible things.
I despise this policy, more often than not the garbage equipment and horrible inks and needles is the reason why many can`t level up their skills or feel stuck and create horrible tattoos, being unable to release their full potential. I feel it`s REALLY pompous and fake to say that only skill matters and "a good artist will make a great tattoo even with bad equipment" - like sure, a good carpenter can build a house with just one cheap hammer, but it will be much better and faster and effective if he has a whole toolbox with all the tools he need. Not giving people who want to progress and actually take this profession seriously a chance to work with professional equipment is just breeding more "I know a dude who`ll do it for cheaper" artists. I have had apprentices that got a really good equipment from the get go, had the motivation and passion and never even did a single bad beginner tattoo, after half a year already creating amazing tattoos..
I myself had really bad tattoo machines when I just started and had problems with shaky lines and so on, thinking it was just my nerves or shaky hands. Then I borrowed a Chayenne Hawk from my master and instantly did a flawless tattoo with perfect lines, shadows and watercolors.. Buying cheap beginner equipment is just throwing your money in the garbage, I don`t know a single professional artist, who uses cheap machines.
