Chi Cheng's bass on this track takes it through the stratosphere. So sultry, dubby, and makes you wanna just slow grind into dust. He was such a huge part of why this album blew everyone's minds when it dropped. RIP
"I get a lot of grief from Stephen anyway - he says, why don't you just play along with my guitar riff? And I'm like, why don't you fuckin' piss off? Haha. He's like, can’t you just play along? ...I remember on our song 'Change (In The House Of Flies)', him and Terry Date said, oh no, you're not gonna play that goofy dub-reggae bass-line, are you? And I was like, yes, that's exactly what I'm gonna play! And then it became a really big song for us, so I was like, okay, now let me write the fuckin' way I write."
So many Deftones songs somehow manage to be both comforting and full of tension at the same time, and it's more than just tension and release. It might be part of why people consider their music so sexy.
Ah when you said it sounded shoegazey it totally unlocked why I like this song so much! I never made that connection and now I can't not think of shoegaze!
Same! I've just recently found out what "shoegaze" is after enjoying the sound for years, just didn't have a definition. Been my most recent "Ooo, this is new and exciting!" musical journeys! :)
I love your authenticity and perspective on music, Ixi. You’re so inspiring, and you’ve been reigniting my appreciation for some of the beautiful music I’ve been lucky to come across growing up. And through that, I’m learning about myself. So thank you for all that 🙏 White Pony has always felt magical to me for some reason. And now you’re pretty much taking us backstage and back in time to peak into some of its secrets. I especially love your take on tension - notes, chords, scales, harmonies … damn, that’s beautiful! Those ninths, eh? 😛 As a music theory ignoramus, I get to learn so much from you. But it also means I get to pay attention to simpler things. One thing you might appreciate is how these amazing musicians create tension and/or stability with numbers … The hi hats playing on the offbeats in the intro, for example: Abe goes with 3 hits → 3 → 4 → 3 +fill → Chorus. Whoah 😮 Also in the intro, the synth comes in after just 1 guitar chord progression (I love your point on the minor/major interplay between guitars and synth. So much tension!). The drums and bass come in at the 3rd, and the vocals somewhere at 3.5 … I find these odd numbers add more layers to that sense of tension. And coupled with the variations that Abe and Chino are so masterful at, it feels like everything is in constant motion and the song just flows. Add that to the magic you talk about and you’ve got yourself a reason to hit that repeat button 😝 P.S. Please excuse me for the wall of text 🥔 P.S.S. You have a beautiful voice, and I love your plants and your smile. P.S.S.S. I’m curious … what other ways/tools do you guys find musicians using to create tension? I’d love to hear it!
Tension can be created by so many things aside from harmonies and rhythms. Like by setting up expectations and then delaying or totally subverting the satisfaction. You can create tension by building intensity in the music - adding more layers, more complexity, making things louder, making notes longer. And the performer can create tension too with how they sing or play. And there's more but just a few thoughts!
Been loving going through these analyses when I can. Always loved Deftones since I first heard them and could only think of their sound as a rainy day. Only through folks like you can someone like me, who doesn't really know the mechanics of the music, to understand a little bit about what that *means* and how I can create my own "rainy day" sound. Thanks, as always, for being the cool music teacher I never had!
Something you did in this video sounded very Trent-y which made me think it would be so cool to hear you do an arrangement of Trent writing a Deftones song or vice versa.
I guess I had the opposite reaction. I didn't get it at first, and I appreciate it more now that it's not so hyped up. But I still don't think it flows with the album at all.
I love your videos! I'm very thankful for your breakdown of each song and your explanation of the song structure and it's notations. The first thing I found out when I started playing piano is that no one plays the same kind of artist and songs and music that I would want to perform and I quickly realized I didn't have enough musical experience to transfer all the songs I would want to do from just a page in a book to coming out of my fingertips... And in walks your channel! A complete musical blessing! Thanks for the way you explain each song that you review I not only love your musical taste, but your ability to convey what I need to perform the song properly and learn something new along the way. I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future!
That moment of frustration at the start, guessing the wrong note, wow do I know that. Ixi is a professional. She has ten thousand times my ear-training and a hundred thousand times my native ear. But when you guess a note wrong, no matter your expertise, it threatens to break the spell of the whole thing--especially if you're at the fragile moment of creating a melody, when can hear the harmony as well. One wrong move, if you're an amateur like me, and you lose not only the melody but also the harmony, poof, all gone. That's a painful stub of the toe.
I'm sure this gets covered, but is there a better modal singer than Chino? It's almost an agreement in the band that everyone will unite to create the wave he surfs. Such a genius singer. Like Billie Holliday, a singer who uses all of what he's given in the service of something entirely new. You'd call him brave, but his bravery is assumed in his complete self-belief. But there's bravery at the core of this, because he's hitting chromatics, sustaining them, and believing in them, holding the 'scoop' until his breath is nearly gone even as the 'beats' of his discord must be ringing in everyone's ears as he approaches, cent by cent, the cadential note. Whew, that was some words there, apologies for that.
"It's a metaphorical song. You could take it in the literal sense of me watching someone turn into a fly and taking them home with me and pulling of their wings and laughing. It spawns from me being a complete asshole and getting the complete repercussion for it by having my life taken away." - Chino This song can be interpreted in a lot of different ways One theory (give that the Album is named after Cocaine) is that it's about how a persons personality changes when their on drugs and becoming a total asshole and paying the price for it.

And to think the rest of the band wanted him to play just the root notes!

The atmosphere in this song is so fly.
I gotta stay fly-y-y-y, y-y, y-y, y

Exactly
I think this is the first Deftones song I heard that introduced me to their music. Love it!
Queen of Danmed has that one on its ost, was the first time I ever heard Deftones. First listen love

@15:05 I love that you sang "fuck" when you messed up 🖤
One of the first songs I learned on guitar and bass.
I can't wait for the analysis of Pink Maggit

I think they had that minor-guitar on the opening and frank put that major-sample on it and everyone was like „ok cool“ 😄

I love your channel! I am a musical composition student and I really learn invaluable resources with your videos, greetings from Chile!
"Don't go changin"
Nice 🖤
What you played at 15:30…you should cover this song on your keyboard.
This was the only song of theirs's i'd listen to when it first came out but now that im getting into the whole album i can't listen to it anymore.
I guess I had the opposite reaction. I didn't get it at first, and I appreciate it more now that it's not so hyped up. But I still don't think it flows with the album at all.
@@CFChristian Maybe that's it. I vibe'd with this before, and now I flipped flows towards the rest of the album.
I just discovered you and I'm in love with your channel!
Love this song, love the breakdowns!
I am convinced that the initial sound you hear in the verse is sampled from Vangelis’s Beaubourg (specifically Part 2).
Picking out a song like this on piano is HARD. Good ear.
You shoulda done the B-side along side...because the B-Side acoustic version
Love your channel
@15:28 reminded me of La Mer
Thank you for doing this. 🎉

Man 🔥
Steph and chi on this is ….boom daddy 🔥🖤
This one's like Teenager!
So I guess what I was curious about was minor and major combined
The “fuck” @ 15:07😂
Actually not a synth, but turntables.
this song sounds so like Telephony by Deathconsciousness
