I don't know why this track brings a tear to my eye, but that kinda describes Deftones in general
See it's funny. I don’t even think of it as a rock song. For the end of what he calls a fantasy album, Chino gets so intimate with the microphone on this one. It's like an acoustic song that he's playing in the bedroom, but it's so heavy. And the song structure! It's just a few verses and then a few choruses and an outro... to me that's such a bittersweet structure but it works for this album. It brings the previous half hour of debauchery(in a good way) to an appropriate end.
This entire album was The Deftones putting their cards on the table and saying "Yes we are doing this" absolute masterclass.
I don't know exactly what it is about this one but I get such chills. It has immense space but it is so filled up with distortion and dark reverb on the vocals. It has an anthem feel to it and it's easy to mouth along to. It seems simple but it has so much nuance like all their songs, it's sort of like it's a more triumphant song that can't help but still be drenched in dissonance, feeling disillusioned.
The rap version of the song called Mini Maggit has other instrumentation parts too and a music vid for those who haven't seen it.

@@guitaristssuck8979 I'm sorry but Mini Maggit is awful, I'm so happy that it didn't make it to the actual album because it just wouldn't fit. That song feels like any other bad Nu-Metal rappy, fake angsty, wannabe sad song. And the lyrics to the song are so bad in that high-school context as opposed to Pink Maggit, where they are actually powerful and feel like genuine and true to how Chino Moreno really is like.
Personally, Pink Maggit is my favorite Deftones song.

It is the only Deftones song. If you disagree, you haven’t been listening to any of their albums over the years.
They are some of greatest theme developers I’ve ever heard. For example, take Digital Bath, Rx Queen, and that culmination with Prince. All tracks belonging to the same theme that they matured either as a story or developed sequence. A better, more recent mastery would be in Cherry Waves to Romantic Dreams to Urantia example.
Better explanations have been given/written but Pink Maggit stands as the foundational melody in which dozens of their songs have been built. From themes to chords it’s actually remarkable how much this single track has contributed to their songwriting.

I remember there was an animator who made a flash animation of this song circa 2001-2003ish on Newgrounds but I am unsure if it is still around.
Been listening to this album in the car for the past week because of this series, definitely one of the best albums from this era.

@@DaveBloodstream Yes. Chino wrote Back to School because the label wanted the album to have a "Hit Single." He wrote it in spite of them and turns out Chino doesn't miss when writing a song.
I really enjoyed this series, wasn't familiar with this album or the band's music tbh, and I'm pretty sure I'll be listening a lot from now on. Curious to know which band and album you're going to dissect next!
Loved this take on white pony, hope you do more albums by them. Boys Republic was on the red, black, grey releases I considered it to be part of this. Anyways good job.

No. Back to School (Mini Maggit) was made because Maverick Records forced the band saying the album didn't have a hit single. So Chino rearranged Pink Maggit to show how easy and mindless it is to make a pop song.

I love that you did just the song from the original release. Even though Back to School (Mini Maggit) is a good song how it was forced on by the record label was lame. Chino was like "Oh you guys want a hit single? Fine. I'll show you how easy and thoughtless it is to make one." About a month later Back to School was written/rearranged in about an hour. Unfortunately it became one of the bigger singles from the album.
I saw them play it live a couple of times, 2007 and 2010 if I'm not wrong
