    I'm not removing the airbag if there wasn't one there in the first place.

    If your vechile is old where it does not come with an airbag 100 percent go for it. For example my 72 chevy c20 cam with an old massive plastic steering wheel that hindered turns because it would be right but against my thighs and the thing was a boat to turn corners with but after a new steering wheel with quick release it fixed that problem entirely and made it a more enjoyable driving experience plus a new safety feature being a quick release. (Considering it never came with a airbag to begin with)

    Love the quick release look. Even though I drive my wrx a lot, I feel like a harness can replace the safety of the airbag somewhat.

      I agree. I believe the airbag in cars is supplemental safety. I am no expert, but I don't think there have been many accidents where airbags were the deciding factor on whether someone lived or walked away from a crash. On the other hand, your airbag isn't going to do shit if you don't buckle your seat belt.

    • @medschooltutor8100

      Safety doesnt come down to individual components, but rather the systems put into place. We can compare thee systems, the oem system of a 3 point belt and an airbag, the aftermarket system with the 6 point harness, roll bar/cage, helmet, and hans device, and the mix system of the same without the roll bar and hans device, which is what most show cars have. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll label them systems 1, 2, and 3 respectively. For the first system, they all work in tandem, from crush points on the car, the the 3 point belt slowing but securing your body, to the airbag slowing your head down and reducing strain on your neck. In the case of a rollover, the 3 point belt allows your body to lean to one side, providing slight protection for your neck. For the second system, it works amazingly, having your body snug and secure in the 6 point harness (with reduced chances of compression fractures to your clavicle and shoulders due do shoulder straps being secured on the roll bar/cage rather than the back of the seat), more so than a 3 point belt. The hans device slows your head down better than an airbag and significantly reduces strain on your neck, but requires the use of a helmet, meaning youre sacrificing convenience for safety, and the roll bar/cage also protects your neck in a case of a rollover. Now for the third system, or the “budget” and more common setup for less serious people, the 6 point harness provides protection in the case of a head on crash, but your head is not secured, plus with the lack if an airbag due to the use of an aftermarket quick release steering wheel, the crash leaves significant strain on your neck and the high likelihood of a spinal fracture. Moreover, because the shoulder straps are not secured to a roll bar and instead to the back of the seat, the placement increases strain on your shoulders and clavicle leading to a higher chance of fracture in a head on collision. In the case of a rollover, your body stays secure, but your head and neck again are left to dangle. If the roof caves, your neck will break as you dont have room to lean your body as you would in the 1st system with a 3 point belt. There are a lot of things to consider when replacing things on the interior of your car and you have to ask yourself if you’re willing to sacrifice safety for aesthetics, or dish out a significant amount of money to have an aesthetic “race” care that is also safe.

      @@medschooltutor8100 You put a lot of work into that comment and I appreciate it. I am still undecided personally, as researching more has also lead me to see that insurance may not like you removing airbags, and in the case of my car, removing the driver airbag also disconnects the passenger airbag from working which is a big problem for me..so not sure I will ever get a quick release now which is sad..unless they someday make one with an airbag in it but I mean that's part of what makes some wheels so ugly...but I am just not sure it's worth these issues now, especially since a harness may actually make things worse AND be illegal..so not sure yet on what I will do..maybe nothing.

      From what I understand, your not supposed to be using harnesses for ‘safety’ with out proper head restraint and at least partial cage. (But who wants head restraint in their street car?). The reason the harness alone would be unsafe is in the event of a wreck your body is strapped in but your head becomes a floating weight attached to your neck and spine.

    I would think that aftermarket steering wheels could be made deliberately "soft"/bendable (edit OR flexible titanium? see my other post)? Perhaps with a nice pad also over the nut/horn point....really I don't understand why they don't optionally provide for some kind of airbag even if it is significantly less of one than the OEM? Maybe it only inflates to 1/4 size of OEM keeping it smaller but still offering SOME protection?? If all the aftermarket companies went in to together they could perhaps engineer and produce such in significant numbers to lower the cost?

    • @kassandrajade3643
      @kassandrajade3643 3 місяці тому

      Late reply here but to answer your question
      Thing is that racing steering wheels are designed to be used in conjunction with racing seats, harnesses, half cage at the minimum and a HANS device being worn with a helmet. So if you are secured in the seat with the harnesses, your body will not move out of place at all in the event of a crash, thus making an airbag redundant as your body will not reach it if it makes sense. That's what all the other features are there for as they complement a safety system if you will that's designed for track use
      Now, thing is that the only way if could somewhat be viable in a street daily car, it's if racing wheels were made with airbags and the harnesses made with the same "stretchiness/rebound" as OEM belts so you could have the looks and safety features of a daily at the same time without having to commit all the way to a specific "build" but it would kinda negate the point of an actual racing setup

    I think a quick release steering wheel on a daily is so stupid. Unless you have a harness and are actually using it probably. Even if you have a harness on a daily you probably don’t have it tight enough and will still end up slamming your head on the wheel in the event of a crash. Makes sense on a track car, with the correct safety measures, but not the daily. You don’t look cool
