The History of Halloween Part VI - 'The End of Evil.'

- After myriad retcons, resurrections, reboots and… rejections, Halloween, once again, was in a state of uncertainty. Now what the hell do we do? Where do we go? That’s what everyone was thinking. What came next could’ve been anyone’s guess, and what we wound up getting, in my mind, is largely better than anything we could’ve imagined. Was it all perfect? Absolutely not, and we’ll get to the bottom of all the dirty details. But from 2018 to 2022, Halloween fans were treated to a trilogy of films that ushered in a brand new era of fear. An era that some might even consider closure. Welcome to The History of Halloween Part VI - The End of Evil.

Your history of Halloween vids are some of my favourite on the site. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into them.
You wanna know why I love this channel? It doesn’t feel like your typical video essay, but rather a guy sitting down and talking about some of his favourite stuff. It’s genuine, and even if you, the viewer, don’t know much about the subject matter, the passion still rubs off on you.
Also, fun story about when I went to see Halloween Kills. When the film came out, I had just turned 15, which meant that in Australia, I could go see it. However, we had vaccination regulations due to the pandemic at the time, which meant that I had to have an of age person who was double vaxxed with me if I wanted to go see it. My poor mother who cannot stand violent slashers volunteered to come with me, and throughout the whole film, she kept holding my hand, covering her eyes, and saying “nudge me when the killing stops.” That scene where Michael puts the bulb through the woman’s neck, even though she didn’t see it, had my mom feeling sick from anticipation. When Michael finally got up at the end, she said something along the lines of “how the hell did he do that?”. Love you, mom. You’re a real one for that.
halloween kills holds a special place in my heart, it was the last movie i saw with my aunt. we were going to see ends in theaters but she passed before that could happen, halloween was one of the things we bonded over
Sorry to hear bro
It does for me as well it’s one of the last movie I saw with my granddad. He has the beginning stages of dementia and a bunch of other medical issues so it’s hard for him to go out anymore and me and my younger brother went with him to see it opening night.
halloween 2018 will always be my favorite halloween movie, the atmosphere, the characters, the way Michael is, and the kills makes this movie a banger
It was so fun to be in the theaters watching it with a packed house.
High-fiving on the best kills, the shrieking, it was so damn fun.
@@dnllrnt
Last great theater experience I had was Halloween 2018
Even over Halloween 1978?
Your original Halloween retrospective is the first video of yours I watched and I’ve been a subscriber ever since. Thanks for Another great video
I just wanna say that Kills didn't retcon the original ending of Halloween. He took the 6 shots, fell, and that's when he decided to go home. The bullet wounds, though subtle, are present. This is also confirmed by Chris Nelson.
There are no gunshot wounds. When he drops the partner he's in full lighting from his belly button up, there are no gunshots. Outside during the surrender, even brightening the image, there are no gunshots.
When he's holding the partner, there's one tiny, tiny little red spot on the right side of his chest, which could have come from any point in the night. I don't believe he took 6 bullets to the chest and he's this clean. I'd love to see that Chris Nelson quote, if you have a source for it. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying I don't believe DGG and the crew made a full commitment to whether it did or didn't happen.
@616Entertainment It's on an episode of the thing with two heads podcast he does with Sean Clark. I'll have to track down the exact timing and episode but it was addressed after a fan wrote in asking about the absence of the bullet holes.
The cop says it in the flashback scene when he runs up to Hawkins. He said “ Loomis shot him six times in the chest”
@@LoganWood121
I remember that podcast.
And yeah he did say about the gunshots. But in this video at 28:39 timestamp, you can see that there are no bullet holes or wounds on Michael's chest.
And
At 28:48, it's hard to see due to shadow on Michael's chest.
I think the first one is a small continuity error which was not taken into consideration while filming and in the second there are wounds but we can't see them.
@@616EntertainmentThe cop even acknowledges that Loomis shot Michael 6 times.... I'd say a pretty simple explanation is that all 6 shots probably didn't connect
I love your cadence and demeanor. You remind me of Jason Lee’s portrayal of Brodie in Mallrats. Of all the recountings/rankings of Halloween, I find yours the most genuine (of which I seldom disagree…mostly echo my same sentiments ), humorous and entertaining. Much love! Btw what does “Dan Dans” mean/origin?
This trilogy was like a weird meal. Great appetizer. Decent meal (I liked it a lot actually). And then finding a hair in your dessert.
Finding this content very recently, your take is hilariously accurate!!
😂
I actually love when you go scene by scene and talk about certain parts of the movies that you love and you spend a few minutes telling us why you love a certain part of the movie and I love when you got on your little rants about a part of the movie you really dislike as well
I watch your history of Halloween videos every Halloween season and definitely don’t mind the long length of them at all as a matter of fact I love the long length of them, nothing better than settling in and watching your history of Halloween vids
Happy Halloween and thanks for all the hard work you do to entertain all of us dan dan’s 🎃
I didn't even develop an interest in Halloween until your retrospective. Ian, your love for things shines through in your work and it's infectious.
As always, you did an amazing job with this series and I hope you're proud.
Side note: as someone who never watched any Halloween movie, your play-by-play with the retrospective was very helpful. Even if you didn't like it, I appreciate it very much.
Watched your original vids, rewatch them frequently. Looking forward to this one!
Here's my pitch for how to improve "Halloween Ends:" Corey's role should have been filled by Cameron, Allison's boyfriend. Imagine he accidentally kills someone while he's out with his dad hunting for Michael during the events of "Kills," avoids jail time, and we see him go through (to an extent) the same arc Corey did in "Ends." They already have a prior relationship, which eliminates a lot of problems with the romance subplot, and gives you a character who has already been set up, so you don't have to give backstory and introduction to a brand new guy who just showed up in the third film
Halloween Ends is super underrated. I love the idea of The Shape becoming more of a disease. From the scene where Corey cuts himself. Goes from being an awkward kid to a psychotic killer. And i liked Michael being taken down by this new kid. Cause the dude is like 98 years old. He's been living off sewer rats for 3 years. Killing is his nurishment.
I love the team up. And i love Corey being so evil he is willing to take his own life just to frame Laurie. That would've been such a great ending if they planned on keeping the series alive. Imagine a whole movie with Laurie in a mental hospital. Where we delve into the other psychos from Halloween 2018.
He was still shot, he still disappeared, he just went home after.
My hot take about the new trilogy is it should’ve just been two movies.
Halloween 2018 is fine as is, maybe re-title that one to Halloween Kills, and then the existing Kills & Ends could’ve absolutely been condensed to one movie to have it all take place on the same Halloween night. You condense all the stuff that people weren’t a fan of in the last 2, and have the focus never leave from Michael vs Laurie.
That also makes it a solid trilogy of
Halloween 78
Halloween Kills (2018 retitled)
Halloween Ends
Instead of the sort-of quadrillgy that it is now, since the new trilogy relies on the original movie, making it a 4-movie continuity
Ends was my favourite one, hot take I know but I loved it so much. The cinematography was perfection, soundtrack rocked, I really liked Corey and this movie actually had deep characters compared to other movies. The movie feels like a brisk October sunny morning, and at night neon and 80s like.
Thank you so much 616 for uploading this on my birthday! I got something to watch today! 😊
You’ve spoken about your personal canon, Ian. Mine is Halloween, Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends.
That is to say, I loved Kills, too. I’ll be curious how split we all are here since these aren’t the Zombie films.
Like always, well done! The cinematography on your videos is king and you did great in not over-summarizing with too much detail. I hope you make these retrospectives on every horror classic and that you do it to this scale and caliber! Can’t wait for Friday the 13th and hope you eventually do Nightmare on Elm Street, too!
That's not your personal canon, that's just the latest official canon; there was no need to enumerate.
I wonder if the name "Halloween Kills" is a reference to when Annie screams "Speed Kills!" at Michael while he's driving by. Like, no, speed doesn't kill, Halloween Kills! I don't know, maybe I'm crazy.
11:55 Halloween 2 is my favorite Halloween ever. With that said, the direction of the story H2018, Kills and Ends doesn't take away at all from my enjoyment of Halloween 2. I just enjoy the best of both worlds 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
I don’t think Kills retcons the ending of 1978, it just says after the ending that Michael went home which was kind of hinted at in the end of 78 with the breathing and the shots at the end
Kills isn't even part of the Canon, neither is Ends or 2018.
Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃
I loved this entire trilogy! Even as a lifelong fan. It's my preferred timeline of the series now.
Thank you for mentioning how chilling the standoff scene at the beginning of Kills was! The music there is spine tingling as well
Halloween Ends???? It's garbage and makes no sense.
Dude. Your “history of” videos got me through Covid. Lockdown was crazy here in Australia. I was in an “area of concern” so we had stricter rules compared to other parts of the city. Your videos got me through man. Your history of Mortal Kombat and History of Halloween series were well produced and really entertaining. It was a key part of getting through 2 years of Covid lockdown. I also lost my mum around the same age you lost your dad and I could relate to the grief you felt with the loss of your father. Thanks for making quality videos. Kept me sane through some tough times!! Thought you should know.
For me, the original Halloween and H20, where Laurie becomes a straight up badass.
Delayed finding this channel…I have always loved H20, I know unpopular opinion but I love it
Laurie and her son’s relationship is so great throughout this movie!
I actually liked all 3 films in this latest trilogy yes I even liked Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends despite Halloween Ends making the mistake of having someone else don the mask I still liked it.
I totally agree with you and liked all the trilogy of sequels too.
We appreciate all of your hard work, Ian. You're the greatest of all time!
Been waiting a year for this! Awesome!
I saw Halloween (2018) at the Toronto International Film Festival. The franchise is what got me into horror in my teenage years and suffice it say, regardless of its quality, which is probably still in the top 4-5 in the franchise, that is one of my most cherished moments as an adult. The joy and relief I felt when I left the wild crowd that night to know that Michael and his escapades were in such good hands will not be matched. I walked out and uttered to my friend, "That was good, and I've never been so happy for only 'good' in my life." Made it hurt even more when I found out there were plans for a trilogy. Should've just ended it there. This is why we can't have nice things.
Man PATCH shirt holding it down. RESTING RINGSIDE❤
Seeing this video really made my Halloween. Thanks man 😊
I've been looking forward to this video for a year, and it was well worth the wait. Absolutely excellent. Thank you! 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Happy Halloween, DanDans!🎃😈
This was a fantastic video on the modern Halloween trilogy, Ian. I enjoyed 2018, Kills was amazing for me personally, and Ends was weird for me. This trilogy ain’t perfect, nothing is, but I’m grateful for its existence, as I loved how it properly followed up the ‘78 film and gave us fans what we wanted. The closure of Michael Vs Laurie. As I said, this trilogy has hiccups, but compared to the Rob Zombie films, Halloween 5, Resurrection and all that other garbage, this was the most structured and logical the franchise has been since the first and maybe arguably Halloween II. I get that Rob Zombie were reboots, but you get what I mean. So to sum it up, I enjoy this trilogy for what it did, and I’ll be more than happy to replay them alongside the OG ‘78 film every Halloween, especially 2018 and Kills. Great job, Ian, and I hope you and all the DanDans have a great Halloween today.😈🎃👻🧟♂️
Love you all.😊❤️
As a person who hates Ends, your pitch not only makes sense to me, but i now find myself actually wishing that is what they did. What a great eye you have sir.
It is Monday September 2 and I'm finally getting to see Halloween Ends uncut and uncensored. I watched Halloween Kills last month. Very much enjoyed it.
When you said either 2018 or 4. I agree, could also watch Halloween 78 or 81 I could just go on a marathon and watch all 4 of those in 1 night.
Second rewatch. This series rules. This episode rules. You rule.
Laurie " putting it all behind her " in my opinion, was a coping mechanism.
Excellent!!!!!! I was looking forward to this, then forgot about it, then remembered once again, forgot… n then here we are. HAPPY HALLOWEEN INDEED!!!!! Thanks for the Content!
Can't wait to watch this at work. First time I ever looked forward to work
Happy Halloween Ian also great job on the music of this video I love the fact that you got bloody tears from Castlevania playing in the background it's a nice touch
Delighted to finally see someone who loves kills! It's In my top 5 for sure. Ends though.... nope
Oh snap! I'm glad to see this! Love your previous videos on this wild series haha
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ALL DAY LET’S FUCKING GO
Good job getting this done!
Well worth the wait. Great video! 🎃🎃🎃
One of the retcons I really hate is how the people of Haddonfield act like Michael haunted them for 40 years, even though Michael only killed five people, was recaptured, and locked away. Micahel wasn't Jack The Ripper or The Phantom Killer, where he remained at large and was never found by authorities.
Funny enough, the H20 timeline did the same thing and did a better job, mainly thanks to the comic books that helped flesh out the timeline a bit more.
But 4 years prior he affected the many many Haddonfield families of all he killed in 2018, and all the dozens of families he put in mourning from Kills. So it's not just the original 78 victims, but everyone killed in 2018 and Halloween Kills and how his evil had put a dark cloud over the town as they show in the beginning of Ends....suicides from losing sons, husbands, wives, daughters, cousins.
Ahhh as soon as I seen Friday the 13th retrospective 2024, more goosebumps ensued!! Keep it up!! 🔪🎃🤘🏻
Great videos!!!! Can’t wait for the Friday the 13th ones. Hope you’re still planning on putting those out. Can’t wait to hear what you think of some of those movies.
I’ll be honest about this Trilogy, Halloween (1978) was the first horror I saw in 2007 when I was 7, so when Halloween (2018) was coming out I had to jump on the chance to see my favorite franchise on the big screen. I loved it and I really enjoyed it, would even say it’s my favorite sequel to the original.
Then Halloween Kills came out on streaming platforms was planning to see it on big screen but got the bug to watch it sooner and I loved it for what it was and thought it was ok sequel. Enjoyed it very much.
Halloween Ends I enjoyed the film but only the final battle between Laurie and Michael but I’ve tried to find the enjoyment. Haven’t yet found it in the rest in the film. Hopefully one day.
28:59 this shot and the entire scene were the best thing outta Ends. So creepy how he just stands there🎃
Halloween kills was by far my favorite of the new trilogy
The History of Halloween has been awesome and this final part did not disappoint! I love Green and McBride's Halloween Trilogy! 1978 is my favourite, but H2 and this trilogy are neck and neck! H3 Season of the Witch is in a league of it's own, love that movie! Thanks Ian for all the awesome content dude! Also, shout out to the lady in Halloween Kills in the street fight with Michael towards the end, she brings a clothes iron to the match! Looking forward to next Halloween and the History of Friday the 13th!
I like to think the left handed thing is a nod to The Princess Bride
Awesome video I'd like to thank you for all the work through the years. I really enjoyed it ❤
You are right about part 4 and 2018 being the best 2 go to movies if the series
The problem with the retcon of this trilogy is that Michael didn't do enough in the original film to warrant the trauma of Haddonfield. So, it falls flat for me.
Halloween 2018 should have been that last one in my opinion. I also love Halloween 4 as well
Also, a great fan edit I've seen, was the mask being on the coffee table and it slow zooms or fades into a close up and you see a faded silver shamrock logo. That would've saved it for me.
It’s like David Green said in an interview. As long, as someone has a vision for the shape. The story will always continue…
I've learned the entire Halloween series by watching these videos and I enjoyed all of it I waited patiently for the final part and I think kills is a better movie from ends easily just from what you said in this video. Great job Ian and I can't wait for MY PERSONAL FAVORITE horror franchise next year Friday The 13th I can't wait for it thank you Halloween and thank you Dan Dan's as well. Love y'all see ya next time
Just like the Halloween franchise, you bring us a sequel that tarnished the best History Of you've ever done! How thematic.
Of course I'm kidding, this is a welcome and awesome addition to the series. I pretty much feel how you do about these 3 movies. I don't hate Ends, but I definitely didn't want Michael's booking to go into the sewer with him. 2018's film was awesome and Kills was awesome. I didn't watch them until October last year with every other Halloween movie ever made, so I don't have the experience of "what's next, how many movies are they gonna make?" So my expectations were sort of there already. Overall, I like this trilogy, I just was underwhelmed with Ends' storytelling.
28:10 oh damn, I NEVER thought about that. You just blew my mind Ian👍😎🇺🇲. Also, no mention of how the bartender in Kills sounded like Dusty Rhodes?
Mentioned that in my review back in 2021. In a retrospective I tried to just keep it to the important information.
@@616Entertainment the respect for The American Dream will never die.
What a shirt ❤️ I’ll be wearing it proudly in a special video I’ve got coming up soon. Only the finest clothes for a video like that.
I’ve still only seen the 2018 Halloween out of the new trilogy. I enjoyed it, the idea of “only the first movie matters” is something I’m very used to as a Godzilla fan (since they often ONLY acknowledge the events of the original 1954 movie). The line where the heel doctor says “you said you’d let me watch” would have been a cool inclusion, if only for the fact that, as a viewer, we’re never sure if he’s imagining things in his twisted brain.
The fan service elements in “Kills” honestly seem really cool. I think it’s probably for the best they didn’t have Paul Rudd in there as Tommy, the guy’s just too handsome to be a traumatized victim who never left his hometown. Probably woulda taken people out of it.
I always kinda wondered how Michael survived (and WON) the fight at the end of “Kills,” only to get jobbed out by the kid in “Ends.” Swapping the events of the two movies like you suggested is actually a pretty good plot progression.
Where will they go next? I recall you asking this rhetorical question after you reviewed Halloween Ends, and I STILL think they should rebrand it and call it “Samhain,” except pronounced “Samm-Haine” like Dr Loomis says, because I KNOW how much you’ll enjoy that hahaha. I kid, but on a serious note, I loved this video. Really great way to end this series. Looking forward to seeing what you do with Friday the 13th!
Dude he happy Halloween Ian my brother it is u who got me back into MK a few months back! And this video on Halloween killed it
Great analysis and Happy Halloween Ian!
Um Michael does get shot and disappear . The even say Loomis says he shot him 6 times. The flashback picks up after the end of the original
Thank You!!! JJC IS THE GOAT MYERS
Great job, man. What a journey.
I agree about your reverse order of the final trilogy! Never thought of that!
I thinks Kills is up there for me as a top spot! I like the symmetry between OG I & II and 2018 & Kills. Love the videos as always man!
Thank you so much for all of these videos! I know I’ll be watching them every year around Halloween as it’s become a tradition.
And same on the kills and end being swapped. For me the finale is kills. The town kills him and Karen lives and done. Ends was such a let down I still feel like it was a joke and we’re gonna get a surprise movie lol
Fucking NICE...
Happy Halloween, Ian!
Happy Halloween, Dan Dans!
Edit: I'm 42 years old, and I still dress up every year!
There was "supposed" to be (it was written, but never even shot) a post credits scene in "Kills" where we see the Silver Shamrock production facility... we would see a rack full of the "Halloween three", then as the camera pulled back, we would see an unidentified hand placing Michael's iconic mask on the same rack... confirming that Michael's mask indeed IS a Sliver Shamrock product. I think this was to be a flashback scene, used to insinuate that Michael's original mask came from Conal Cochran himself.
It sounds really cool... but I'm glad the scene was ultimately done away with.
I couldn't agree more with everything you said, especially in regards to "Halloween Ends".
Keep up the good work, brother!
I love your videos and your commentary dude.
I think one of my favorite tidbits about this film is that the first scene they shot with Michael and Laurie was her seeing him in the mirror and Nick Castle was behind the mask for that one scene.
This is my THIRD time watching this video. LOVE your videos dude.
Thanks! I hope you’re enjoying The History of Friday The 13th!
Amazing review! Love your recaps, started with resident evil; smack down and now Halloween! You’re reviewing my childhood lol😂. Thank you. My only feedback for what it’s worth, background music is very distracting otherwise loved it
Happy Halloween All! Great morning. Good cup of coffee and 616 doing the final ass Halloween movies.
I saw Halloween (2018) & I thought there was a post ending credit scene where we see Michael Myers survived the trap. But instead we hear Michael's breathing indicating he survived.
Thank you for another banger, Ian. Much love.
One of the things in Halloween kills that also fascinated me was when Allyson was stabbing Michael on the staircase, he's pulled her in to look at her before tossing her down the stairs. Almost like how he grabbed Corey in ends.
Amazing stuff, Ian! Happy to see this series conclude, and get all your full thoughts on thus fascinating trilogy.
Just like Season of the Witch has been re-evaluated and become well-liked in the last 40 years, I believe Halloween Ends will be seen as one of the better films in the franchise in the years to come, once fans' expectations have simmered and they can come back to it from a different angle. To me, it's all about expectations, just as it was in the early 80s when Halloween III came out. We love Season of the Witch now, but you wouldn't fault a filmgoer on 1982 for disliking it when they go in expecting a Michael Myers movie. Same thing here, although there is still plenty of Michael in this movie. As much as I've enjoyed Halloween 2018 in the past (not much of a Kills fan), I actually think Ends is the best of the trilogy. It takes the most risks, and for me, it paid off.
YAAAAAAAS Ive been waiting for this for years ❤❤❤
"Is there some corny dialogue that would make the Pope weep?" Oh, man. No way. I have watched a lot of UA-cam videos from a lot of people, and I have never heard anyone else quote AMERICAN MOVIE, ever! I was starting to doubt anyone but me even knew what the hell that was! By the time I heard that, I had already watched Parts 1-5 of your HALLOWEEN overview, as well as Parts 1 and 2 on FRIDAY THE 13TH. If I wasn't a fan before, you definitely won me over with that quote. Geeks, unite!
Great work as usual, friend
I loved "Kills". My new favorite. The best part was when the villagers beat the Frankenstein out of him and he laid there waiting to re-energize, got up and basically said "oh ya". Loved it. Hated "Ends".
Bro this video is great. Well done sir. I’m actually willing to revisit Kills now. I have kinda hated it until now-the great parts have been completed overshadowed by the crappy parts in my eyes.
Yea for sure, give it another go.
I got another example of Halloween Ends, imagine watching Avengers Endgame and it’s just about a kid that lost his parents to the snap and the Avengers and Thanos was more of a background before appearing in the climax.
Been eagerly anticipating this. Well worth the wait.
Halloween KILLS is the movie that FINALLY reestablishes Michael as the Boogeyman!! I went down to Wilmington, NC where Kills was filmed and walked around all the sites... Gotta say it was pretty awesome 💯💯
I love your retrospectives so much
This trilogy is great
My fav parts about 5&6 was these reviews 😂👍
Been waiting 2 years for this masterpiece 🔥🔥
Oh thank god, I’ve been waiting for this
Did I miss what happened to all the podcast on Spotify?I have been a dan dan for years. You only have two open right now. I hope you and Mike Charles are ok. Shockwave soldier.
Love your Halloween videos, they're always great.
I agree with what you said about Ends. Corey was rushed in and should have been introduced from the start of the new trilogy, that way we would allowed us to feel for the character and watch his decent. I'm hoping they are leaving Michael in the past, I want the series to keep going, but its time for Michael to retire. Give us new bogeymen to fear, hell lets see Season of the Witch get another chance. I get what they were trying and frankly I don't feel they did it right.
The best part of this trilogy is that Michael is actually scientific possible, highly improvable, but not (completely) impossible. It's scary to think about what a human can actually do.
Love the final installment of this series. Super excited for the history of Friday the 13th! Would you ever want to see a Jason V Michael Myers movie?
Great narration
RIP Patches
Fucking awesome video man. Thank you so much for the work you have put into this series. Super excited for the Friday the 13th next year!!!
