@@rhettcarboni right but did snl only recently decide to have crowd mics? or did she specifically request crowd mics? because artists in the past have tried to do that with the crowd and i have never heard it be this loud. usually its almost completely inaudible when an artist does that on snl.
@@Lake_Liminal I’m guessing they always have them, because most production sets do, but she put the mic out so the sound engineer put the crowd mics in the house. She probably requested it
I’m more impressed by how on-key and on-beat the crowd was. Normally a crowd singalong sounds terrible because it’s full of people who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket with a lid on it.
People find this crowd song along moment suspicious. They don't realise several things- 1) Chappell's songs are structured perfectly to be call and response. The parts she asks people to sing to, are all parts that have been made to be sung like that by design. So most people who have seen her perform even once will know that they are expected to sing that part. They anticipate and participate. And the crew definitely prepped mics for that because it is an integral aspect of her show. 2)This was in NYC. Chappell 100 percent appeals to theatre kids. 😂. I once went to a Sara Bareilles show in MSG and my ears were blessed by the crowd around me because she has a huge theatre kid audience too. 😅
One of the best aspects of the SNL performance: the day before the show Chappell reposted a FB post from her personal page from 2011 when she was 13 years old that simply stated “I am determined to be on SNL”. Now THAT’s determination.
She was inspired by Queen's Live Aid performance and somehow matched it at Lolla, got praise from most of her idols, and fawned over the VMA awards then burnt the house down. Next she said at a talent show in 2012 that she wants to win a Grammy. This girl is about to run out of goals within a year of fame!!!
@@JennyLouLou Considering Chappell is only 26, you would have had to known she was going to be a star and on SNL when she was 3 years old if you happened to have gotten tickets to that show
Also, not the first time chappell has done the 'crowd sings this part' bit but I gotta say it hits the hardest when she does it for pink pony club... the meaning of the song just really resonates with a lot of people and makes it easy to really pour your heart into it. Sometimes the whole 'aiming the mic at the crowd' thing doesn't do it for me, I know in concert, artists probably do that to take a quick vocal rest as well as for fun but when its too much it makes me go 'I came here to hear YOU sing not the fool next to me' lol but I think chappell strikes a good balance. Plus the SNL stage seems notorious for having bad audio quality so cutting to the crowds audio is a smart move 🤣
This is Lucy Ritter, and the same basist from the tiny desk Allee Futterer. The guitar player is Andrea Ferrero and I love her! Chappell credited them on an instagram post the day this episode aired
Was that definitely Eliza playing guitar? If so, this must have been her first show back with Chappell since early summer. She’s amazing, I was bummed when she left. The subsequent guitarists were good but they weren’t Eliza.
The guitarist is not Eliza from Tiny Desk. It is Andrea Ferrero, who has had a similar "rising from nowhere through sheer talent" story as Chappell. My hope is Andrea can find worthy riffs to marry to new Chappell songs and make rock mainstream again.
As a now aging GC fan, I was truly shocked to see you reference the song seasons. I immediately had to go listen to that song and it brought back so many memories! ❤
Oh if you like her singing with a stronger rock sound you have GOT to react to chappell's cover of Barracuda on stage, there are audio clips as well as video here on UA-cam of her covering it at austin city limits (i think she may have sung it at other venues but ACL had great video/sound quality, and the whole concert is on youtube so you dont have to settle for someone's shaky phone recordings). It totally blew my mind, I know her next album is supposed to be more country influenced but I hope she'll break out some more cool covers for shows as well as let her concert versions of songs be a little more rock/have some differences from the album versions just like the midwest princess tours. As impressed as I am that she can sound BETTER than the album version, it's so fun to hear those tweaks and differences and longer intros for stage performances. Some artists/singers are better in the booth but not Chappell! She really comes alive when she's live on stage and brings the vocals to back it up with :-)
Y'all are so wholesome, and a Good Charlotte mention too?? And y'all are in my home state which is also super rad! I'm seconding the person who said that y'all should react to her Barracuda cover at Austin City Limits this year, I think you'd really enjoy it!! :)
Great video guys. My daughter got to see Chappel at Outside Lands in the City (music festival in Golden Gate Park in SF) this year. Clearly she booked it before she blew up full mainstream. My kid is good at sniffing those things out. She saw Billie Eilish at a small club in the City too before she blew up as well. Who knows what’s next?
They were at the Tyson fight. Daniel and Johnny. The camera was on them and the announcers were talking about new somethings coming soon 😂 You two crack me up 😂
Really cool that they're fans of Chappell! They wouldn't be the audience to speak of Chappell's queerness, defiance, femininity, etc., all things that I gravitate toward, b/c why would they lol? Snares and sixteenth notes interest them more. That's more of the mindset of the average Grammy voter, I'd imagine, so hopefully that's good signs for Roan next year! 🤞
Will you guys please review her covering Heart - Barracuda live at ACL - the best verson of it on youtube is her entire set from acl - the whole show is really impressive - but barracuda is about 23min in. I also highly reccomend you react too her new song The Subway (two songs after barracuda at the same show at about the 33min mark) She is very impressive live considering how quickly she started pulling in crowds of this magnitde. She is making the most fun music ive heard since queen, and she might just be freddie mercurys reincarnation in my opinion.
you guys should listen to her new song (unreleased but she performed it on snl and there's audio/lyric videos on youtube) and her unreleased song the subway!!
Her live shows have a much more rock sound than Tiny Desk. Just her, Lucy front and center on drums, electric guitar, and bass guitar. She says she loves female guitarists like Joan Jett.
It is a nice story and we can all relate to mom saying: "God, what have you done?" If the audience can relate to the song, it makes it so much better. This is not a Beatles song, but we relate to The Beatles differently. She got a larger audience of "oldies" now, by being on SNL... She did a great job and it not like every other current female artist who uses autotune and the breathy voice.
Please react to chappells entire album! I will subcribe to your patreon if you do!! Also, please react to 5 Seconds of Summer live Meet You There Album. They are (in my opinion) the most talented 4 piece band of the Millenial/Gen Z generations. They began touring with One Direction when they were like 16/17 yrs old and haven't stopped. I'd love to hear a musicians perspective because they tend to get shit on because people call them a "boy band" when their truely a pop/rock group. I think you'll really enjoy the drummers clean but intricate sound, the killer guitar riffs, stanky bass lines, and the lead singers incredible range. Their live album is non stop bangers.
Her bassist and guitarist were not from the Tiny Desk performance. Andrea was with her during festivals as a replacement for Devon along with Allee the bassist.
Im a HUGE fan of hers and I've heard plenty of her live singing to know shes legit. My problem is, why did it sound like she was out of breath from the very first note? Like....gurl?
They clearly miked the audience BEFOREHAND, so it wasn't spontaneous. But it was perfectly executed. Re: the all female band of total killers. Note Olivia Rodrigo is in a similar position. Everyone becomes a Queen the moment Chappell starts singing Pink Pony Club
Chappel deserves all the hype. She’s so good and she’s been in the industry for the longest time and is just now getting her flowers
So impressive given the audience is a lottery so to have that big of an audience participation and reaction shows just how far Chappell has come.

You know Chappell Roan loves saying “Live from NY it’s Saturday Night”!
and I expect her to BE back on SNL as a musical guest AND the host! She is the moment!

All the Lucy love is amazing. She is so good and deserves the recognition 🥁
The guitar riff in this song goes crazy
