After you make the supremacy villager movie, we need a movie about the dismounted Konnik seeking revenge for his horse.
We can call it Kon Wick.

I'd watch it
Kon Nick.

This idea may have been stolen from others that said it earlier. But then again, maybe multiple people thought of it. Great minds think alike, and fools, seldom differ.
Mounted and Dismounted Konnik. Name a more Konnik duo.
You get a point for the attempt, but alas, it doesn't work. The two Ns are both pronounced, i.e. _['kon-nik],_ not _['ko-nik]._
Yeah, I posted that here at release iirc, Spudman, but I think it's better if we can all be ikonnick together.

This is what happens when you leave your horse in a field of cows for too long. Those bovine universities are a hotbed of heretical thought.
Actually that isn't why Heresy does its effect.
A civilization without the tech is a normal kingdom. If someone converts to another religion, it's not a crime. But a civilization with Heresy researched is a kingdom where heresy (questioning the dogma) is made illegal. Therefore, when an enemy monk persuades your unit to convert to the monk's religion, the state accused the unit of heresy and sentences it to death, therefore your unit dies.
Technically the tech shouldn't simply be called "Heresy", but "Outlawing Heresy".

I love them just for the flail.
I don't care about people saying "duh, it's not a true medieval weapon".
Rule of cool applies here.
That's literally why i like them too. Also the flail was a medieval weapon of the Late Middle ages, and it was pretty rare. But they got historical accuracy right here because it was, in fact, a cavalry only weapon.
Its certainly closer to a battlefield weapon then the swords knights use.
@@garretgang8349 well, knights did use swords, but on foot, not on horseback. So you're right

Does it bother anyone else that it's an "Elite Dismounted Konnik" and not a "Dismounted Elite Konnik"?
That's kind of unfair to the Konnik though, isn't it? He has trained his entire life at being dismounted, he is the best of the best at falling off his horse.. That was . . . A good comment already 😱
What about them? You just mix them with some cheap Camel Riders.
@@Manouil_III but what about Cataphracts alone?
Too slow to get to and too expensive to fully upgrade. The Byzantines were designed in an era where balance was still important to the devs. These new civs can do everything. Early game, mid game, late game OP across the board.
Mamelukes could work as well.
Konniks are indeed super good, especially since you can make them more easily compared to other UUs via the Krepost. However, something that I think is worth pointing out is that they perform pretty poorly vs CA compared to the Knight-line. Cav Archers can clump up/hit and run, and the low pierce armor of the Konnik + slow movement speed of the dismounted Konnik make them particularly susceptible. Unfortunately, Bulgarians miss the last armor upgrade for their skirms, otherwise skirm + Konnik would be truly terrifying to deal with. Even so, it's still pretty good.
Ornlu!
Good points too.
I usually start with a drush to slow my opponent's economy, plus militia automatically within a snap converts into man at arms as you reach feudal age, which makes it so freaking powerful. Your enemy is either compelled to make towers or send his/her scouts (which he/she was gonna send em to your base) or make an archery range. That costs something and delays up time for sure. Reach Castle age fast, secure your base make Kreposts and Konniks with necessary upgrades and raid their eco. Feudal age units hardly cope up with castle UU with upgrades on em. Disrupt their eco, then you are left with 2 options. either mass konniks and go straight for the tc kill or reach imp.
Possible Bulgarian Overview soon?
In Bulgarian "Konnik" means horseman. The elite type of horseman in Bulgarian army must be Boyar, but its already taken by Slavs
Mmmm curious
Indeed. Which made me think what it was with the Slavs. Fair enough, they made both civs well balanced towards each other. Alliances could be good in the game too, but I'm not seeing them on high level. Maybe except they can throw in some Mongols or Britons in a 3vs3 to compensate for both Bulgarians and Slavs not having good archers.
5:12 that cheeky hand cannoneer not abiding by the rules
Imagine having a Bulgarian campaign, where you get dismounted Konniks, and part of a mission is to find them horses! 😁 Big fan of this channel!

That...that pun had to be intentional.
So basically when a Konnik has Heresy tech, the monk actually converts his horse... Which dies, from heresy.
Okay...
What about vs. Viking champions or berserkers with Chieftains?
thoughts on being able to remount a dismounted Konnik?
Garrisoning in a Krepost/Castle for x seconds and/or paying some % of the unit cost could give them their mount back. Or should they never be able to remount like as is?
edit: another idea for a civ (or even just a mod) would be being able to create horses and instead of creating cavalry units you could mount swordsmen for knights, spears for lancers, archers for ca, skirms for genitours and maybe even villagers to scouts. sounds like a unique concept for the horse unit which might exist in some of the campaigns
Nice!
Too fiddly...
so stirrups makes them attack 25% faster which is actually 33% which is actually 12% when you look at dps

I have a question concerning the Vikings. Since their infantry gets bonus damage agains cavalry and no Halbadier - Upgrade, is it vialble to use bersekers against cavaly due to their hp - regeneration. Besides that question I have to thank you for your great videos. Keep up the good Work!
Vikings have probably the best pikemen, with the extra hp they can compete with generic halbs.

When you consider you need to sell food for gold, pikemen line suddenly looks very good again, they're a fine counter even if you only have 7 hand cannoneers backing them up dozens of pikemen against dozens of Konniks instead of a more balanced formation. I'm personally a bit disappointed they hold their own against Persian and Spanish Paladins though. I can live with them beating the Knight line before it reaches perfection.
Hey Spirit, you should do a review of AOE:2 for PlayStation 2. That’d be hilarious if you could somehow setup a multiplayer LAN game with it.
Ok so monks can turn a horse and the rider has to slay his heretic horse.
Monk: have you heard about our lord.... Wolololo
Horse: thank you! I'm your follower now.
(Commits suicide)
Konnik: (his faith intact, gets up and resumes fighting)
Yeah, it's very funny how the heresy death happens, but in defence of the developers - you, viewers, sit down and balance that code out. It's not going to be easy and may cause bugs. So, if it ain't broken, don't repair it.
Having Bulgarians nerfed by removing the tech Heresy also was suggested, but Bulgaria is the first country after Byzantium to practice heresy. Definitely it will be historically inaccurate. Furthermore, the dualistic Bogomil heresy was practiced in Western Europe as well.
The konnitsi were nerefed enough by having their attack speed reduced. At least this made the players prioritize Stirrups before massing them. Which basically forces the player to first build a castle and then a krepost. I've seen this from The Viper very often - finds an important hill, builds a defensive castle and then finds places to build kreposti. (Even if they were "DauT" kreposti the last time he played.) The unit needed to be balanced out in the Castle Age.
Enough for an A+ on cavalry for the Bulgarians? We shall see very soon. One sure thing - it's a unit that definitely has an unique place.
So, the horses actually understands the monks' wololo...?
Yes and can also be taught that the opponents wololo is heresy.
@@rupert7565 That means AoE2 is actually part of the Narnia universe where the horses can speak and are intelligent like men
Halbardier: Turn back! We have bonus damage against mounted units!
Konniks: Then we shall become unmounted units.
I feel like the Konnik and the Leitis got their stats mixed up from each other. Leitis should be like the OG Konnik (no armor ignore) as in they can survive after their horse gets killed (at this stage they can act as a Flemish Militia with slightly weaker stats) vs the Konnik should be the one with the armor ignore bonus (because of their flail) but has no dismounted version
Sounds like a classic pike and shot combo would be the ideal counter.
Konnik are not an overpowering unit.
They are just hard to counter.
Kinda like Cataphracs.
Dismounted Konnik rising above the corpse of a fallen paladin: “Heh, what a normie!”
How does the higher attack damage and lower attack rate interact with armor for DPS? My gut says that helps them with dps
Make a video for when to use Steppe Lancers as Mongols now. Do they even worth making?
Is this a reupload? didn't Spirit of the Law already look at Konniks again?
Yeah, I've seen this video before
Great for the developer team to code such a unit into the game since making such a unit with aoe2 code is not easy. You can benefit from making this unit in the Ivaylo campaign which has 5 scenarios with the 5th being the only scenario in the campaigns where you fight against the lithuanians as poland.
I love the comment section for this video!
Fun fact. Konnik in slavic languages means "small/little horse".
In slovak kôn means horse and koník means little horse ... so the origin of the name must be similar.
If the dismounted konnik would get bagains 🔥🔥🔥.
I think the best explanation for Heresy is that the Konnik converts, offers his horse as a sacrifice, then gets amnesia when he falls to the ground and hits his head.
It's easy for the monk to convince the horse about his religion than the rider :)
burgundians have religious horses, thats what i learned today.
The monked converted the wrong unit😂
The samurai looks dope in this

I personally made a mod day 1 of this expansion for the konnik. I think its really cool and all, but I thought it would be more interesting to make the cavalry version more of a beefy light cav, and then turn the dismounted unit into a champion.
Its pretty fun
What about the swordsmen anti building bonus?
Seriously one of the most interesting unit in the game

Not avenging your horse? That's heresy...
I think dismounted one should benefit from bagains for 5 hack armor also there should be option to Mount them again and maybe higher bonus vs buildings becouse flail
Hey La Hire, you're missing a very important point about the DPS: target's armor. Even if on paper these two units:
a) 10 atk, 2s
b) 5 atk, 1s
have the same DPS, the first unit have higher DPS if the target has at least 1 point of armor (and less than 8 ofc). A field of improvement for your future videos is taking it into your calculations (for example you can calculate DPS of an unit vs few units that are most likely to be faced by it). Cheers :)

"...MY HORSE IS A HERETIC!" *THWACK*
Would Saracens be a good counter? Mamelukes are quite strong against cavalry, and their ability to kite infantry would give them a slight edge against the dismounted Konnik. Also, Saracens have very strong monks and arguably the strongest monk rush strategy, which would significanly maim a Bulgarian player if they either fall behind or decide to rush with Konniks.
I would say saracens to be strong against them aswell. Archers in castle when the konnik has nearly no pierce armor. And in late game they can try to transition into camels and what not.
ALSO You should keep in mind population, konnik give twice the value when you are at max pop cap, if at 200/200 and 50 konikk is the same as having 250/200 with 50 cav + 50 inf
It's weird you view it as all the cost on the horse and the unit being free. You should have compared it as a split cost. Then we have 1 knight and one 2 handed SM against 1 konnick or make it equal resources split exactly 50 50. The 2 units get twice the hits.
I don't want to be the cry baby, but it's pronounced "kon:nik"
Damn... I am the cry baby.
The konnik is a very interesting unit. It poses so many possibilities, but it's rather sad that they don't intend to expand with new civilizations. What if you could create an archer unit that, when its HP dropped to zero, took out a sword and became an infantry unit? What if Siege units have engineers, and killing the Siege unit caused engineer units to spawn?

You intro is still alive? YES
i uninstalled DE and rollback to hd,cause the game is not good, all they did is just add new graphics and 3 civs, wish they would implement the new civs in HD,also the game is un optimized
The saddest part about them is that the Bulgarian campaign missions never incentivise you to build them. They all seem to want to force you into mass cav archers, sidestepping every Bulgarian military bonus.
So how about on comparison to Goths? More spammed although weaker Champions vs Elite Konniks?
Such an overpowered unit. Konnik mixed with halbs is nearly impossible to counter.
Bulgarian civ overview incoming!
Again, my Bulgarians Overview predictions:
Archers - B-
Infantry - A or A-
Cavalry - A or A+
Siege - A- (Siege onagers with siege engineers, not many civs get them.)
Navy - C or C- (at least the galleons have Bracer)
Monastery and Monks - B or B-
Defenses - B- or C+
Economy - B-

@@d.6065
Spirit is picky on Arrowslits. Bulgarians don't get that. No fortified walls either and no bombard tower and bombard cannon. No hoardings as well. The krepost is an interesting case and Bulgarians get bracer for that. But since a single capped ram with siege engineers can bring one down, I'm not sure. So it's a weird case. I still predict a B-, but we shall see.
spd7693 i may agree with b-, but c+ is a bit unfair for me :)
