Oh wow! This song is one of those defining songs of my childhood. We moved to phoenix in the summer of 84 from a very small town in the midwest- and the line " the city is crowded, my friends are away and I'm on my own" pretty much summed up my life- LOL! such angst! Also, it was in the iconic original Karate Kid- movie- which was one of the highlights of that summer. What memories- love me some Ralph Macchio!
Bananarama was one of the few British all girl bands in the eighties to make it big on the US charts! They has a string of catchy pop hits, just a fun time! ❤❤
You did it! So glad you finally added these lovely English ladies to your knowledge base! "Cruel Summer" (released in 1983) has always been my favorite of theirs, but you would LOVE their cover of Shocking Blue's "Venus." "I Heard a Rumour" is also a banger. Their names are Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward, and Siobhan (pronounced sha-VAHN) Fahey. If you're interested, Ace of Base also did a great cover of this song. And finally... PLEASE do more Phil Collins!
1983. This song was on the radio my last day of highschool. We were driving around listening to music feeling free!🤗🥰 Still get that excited free feeling when I hear it!💖💜
The second 1/2 of the group Wham, Andrew Ridgley, married Keren Woodward from Bananarama. I know they split up up at one point, but I had heard they got back together. Hopefully they are still going strong. This song "Cruel Summer" was such a fun hit. Glad you got around to reacting to it. Thanks!
"Aie a Mwana" by Bananarama is one to listen to... a more offbeat song that was big in the clubs back in the day but wasn't so much a top 40. Since you sometimes like to react to a little off the beaten path by well known groups, give this one a try.
Bananarama has always had this interesting style of singing -- where they all sing at once in the same key, followed by some very nice harmonies. It's a wonderful combination that wouldn't work for everyone, but works fabulously for them! Some of their more famous hits are "Venus," "I Heard a Rumor", and "Love in the First Degree." My favorite by them (which really showcase their harmonies) is the lesser-known "The Wild Life" and "Through a Child's Eyes."
Please react to Expose', on "Female Friday".. They are a 3 girl group from the 80's and 90's that still tour to this day...😀😀 Try "Seasons Change", "Point Of No Return", "Come Go With Me", "I'll Say Goodbye For the Two of Us", and "Your Baby Never Looked Good In Blue"...😀😀
My fave track by the girls is Trick of the night , very under rated song and does not get the credit it deserves . Worth a listen , im sure you will like it .
Exposed to Love and Point of No Return should be reacted to! They were a synth-pop dance group but more specifically Freestyle Dance (not to be confused with Freestyle Rap). It was a popular genre in the 80s but for some reason it never gets reacted to by anyone.
Two of the girls meet when they were 3 yeras old, and the 3 girl they meet at fashion school, early 1980s. Early hits "Shy Boy", "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" and "Robert DeNiro`s waiting". Great Girls that are still making new music
I’ve always been confused as to why death row records didn’t find an artist to sample this bass line and hook. I feel like it could’ve been a total summer banger.
@@brianoss8469 A rap group called Wordplay did a cover/remix that I liked, but I'll be darned if I can find a link to it anywhere. I found a ton of other rap covers/samples while looking for it, but I haven't listened to them.
Another great group of the 80's [this song from '83]. They did some good songs with Fun Boy Three too and Siobhan Fahey moved to Shakespears Sister and was the 'Angel of Death' in the No. 1 hit "Stay". Fun fract: Her sister Maire played Eileen in Dexy's Midnight Runners "Eileen".
You have hit the trifecta of “girl groups” from the 80’s Bananarama, Go Go’s and Bangles. It was a cool time. Thanks for the reaction! Looking forward to the movie channel.
Bananarama’s story is really interesting, celebrating 40 years this year. Their thing was it was all a bit of a mess. No styling, big budget, half assed dance routines, but very catchy pop songs and they wrote this about their friends being on Holiday and they had to promote in the US. Great reaction.
So glad y'all picked this song! Definitely part of the summer soundtrack of my teen years. Some other Bananarama songs I suggest you check out include "Love in the First Degree", "I Want You Back", "Shy Boy", "I Heard a Rumor" & "Stuff Like That".
Fun fact: Back when this song hit the US charts, I was a tail gunner on the Space Shuttle Missions and as we geared up for the great skirmish of '88 on the DS, Bananarama did a live video shoot to wish us all luck and a safe reentry. None of us really knew who they were but after having Al Franken crack some jokes, we were happy to see pretty girls! Got herpes that year. Good times.
Perfect choice for an introduction to Bananarama. All of their songs are good and they subtly change as the 80s went on and these early records have a different feel. "Shy Boy", "He Was Really Saying Something", "Cheers Then" and their amazing pop cover of The Sex Pistols' "No Feelings" from the early 80s and then "I Heard A Rumour"."Love In The First Degree" from the later period.
This is early 80s. The best music came out during this time IMO. I have that same Billy IDOL shirt in an old box, J! Wore it all the time in high school.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! One of my all time favorite songs and video. I lived in New York in the 80's and this video shows how it was. Everything from the pay phone to the black guys checking out the blondes. Just so cool!
Fun fact : When shooting the video in NYC ... The only dressing room for them was a local dive bar in the area frequented by truckers ...One trucker happened to offer them cocaine ... See them dancing extremely happily in some scenes and tired and mellow in others ? ... It is also speculated that their look here inspired Madonna to follow suit with her messy hair pulled back with a rag look ...
This song will forever remind me of the movie “The Karate Kid.” It figured prominently in the movie soundtrack. Awesome 80s movie!

Please do "Turn Up The Radio" by Autograph. Very underrated song... 80's y'all!!!!!
Love this song.
No kidding! I love that song!!!
Right up my boy's alley!
Very '80s and hits on every hair metal stereotype.
Great pick Cindy 👏
80's was big on female singers and female bands like - Go Go's - Bangles - Bananarama
Next Female Friday try the "Live" version of the Bangles "HAZY SHADE OF WINTER" ... it is KILLER!!!!
They did...
ua-cam.com/video/8RCjLYp1J3A/v-deo.html
That is probably my favorite cover of any song. It really showcases the artists that they wanted to be.
They did it 7 months ago
Another great female vocalist is Expose - Season's Change!! Amber will love this !!
Another song from a British band in the 80s you might like is The Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way (with Sarah Jane Morris). Great dance song.
I’ve been trying to get them to do Bronski Beat. They need to hear Jimmy Somerville.
@@zivo24 Bronski Beat would be awesome too. Love their music.
Ivve suggested both Bronski Beat and Communards in the past.
Siobhan is Irish.
Is it sha-vahn or sha-bahn? She's Irish and sha-bahn sounds more Irish.
1983. This song was on the radio my last day of highschool. We were driving around listening to music feeling free!🤗🥰 Still get that excited free feeling when I hear it!💖💜
Love this group, but Jay I really love the new Billy Idol tee, lol! Great as always 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yep another 80's group from my childhood. This song is from 83. You'll also like their song VENUS. They're a British group started in 1980.
This is one of the songs that defines the 80's for me
That beat is SSSICK!! Whoever produce this song was ahead of their time!!!
Amber, for Female Friday, you gotta do "Stay" by Shakespeare's Sister, that duo features members from Bananarama.
Thanks!
Guys this is on the karate kid soundtrack a lot of great songs on this album you should check it out great job guys!
Yes!! This song always makes me think of Karate Kid which came out in 1984!
It is NOT on the soundtrack, I own it. It is of course a memorable song in the movie but it is not on the album, fact.
Check out the girls surfer movie 🍿🎥 Blue Crush
LOVE this song! It came out in the summer of ‘84 and I was 12. Definitely part of the Soundtrack of My Life.
"Aie a Mwana" by Bananarama is one to listen to... a more offbeat song that was big in the clubs back in the day but wasn't so much a top 40. Since you sometimes like to react to a little off the beaten path by well known groups, give this one a try.
I would so love to relive this decade.
Mi canción favorita de ellas❤❤❤
It takes me back to the discos and yes I dressed like that! What a band... You should listen to Mel & Kim.... 😊😊😊
DEFINITELY check out their version of Shocking Blue's "Venus"! You liked the original - I think theirs is even better!
They are a 3 girl group from the 80's and 90's that still tour to this day...😀😀 Try "Seasons Change", "Point Of No Return", "Come Go With Me", "I'll Say Goodbye For the Two of Us", and "Your Baby Never Looked Good In Blue"...😀😀
this song was everywhere 1985 such great memories of the summer of 85!!! great 80s smash. ; )
Venus by Bananarama. Fire
My fave track by the girls is Trick of the night , very under rated song and does not get the credit it deserves . Worth a listen , im sure you will like it .
❤ Bananarama! While you’re at it please check out Exposé They have some great songs
Oh man this song makes me want to watch the karate kid again.
They had a number of hits back in the 80's, early 90's. Also were backing vocalists and on the video for Do They Know It's Christmas, with Band Aid.
I’ve always been confused as to why death row records didn’t find an artist to sample this bass line and hook. I feel like it could’ve been a total summer banger.
Great point!!!!
There's like a dozen rap songs that sample from this.
@@bg6b7bft oh.
Send me an example. I’d love to hear it.
@@brianoss8469
A rap group called Wordplay did a cover/remix that I liked, but I'll be darned if I can find a link to it anywhere.
Amy Lee from Evanescence did a cover of this song during quarantine.
Bananarama formed in 1980, this song is '83
"Venus" is my favorite Bananarama song!
I feel sad every time I see the twin towers in this video. Great song from the '80's.
80's pop music was fun!
Good times.
Bananarama was big in the `80s...3 really cool girls. Met them one day..really nice. "I Heard A Rumor" is very nice also.
The remake they did of "I'm your Venus" is off the hook. It might be just called Venus.
Not sure what the title of the song is, but you know the one.
The BEST era for both movies and music.
Loved this song in the summer heat and their outfits and hair were so coooool! This song came out 1983. I was 21, Yeah!!!!
Bananarama are a female British group from the United Kingdom. Back in the 80’s & 90’s
This came out the year I graduated high school 1983.
A few other songs you should check out, Venus and I heard a Rumor.
