I can't believe the amount of effort they put into this game. In my first play through I was blinded by frustration and could not see the beauty and crude yet hilarious humor in this game. A true gem, the high reviews don't lie. The references and characters that are actually worth unlocking put the icing on the cake.
Because I have probably played less than 50 (full-priced) video games in my life, and I've never owned any sort of console other than a PC (among many, many other reasons), I never understood any of these references. Thanks for making this video!
Wow, I knew about a lot of these, but the Pokemon reference just dropped my jaw. I've been playing this game for a looooong time, and finally got 106%, but never ONCE, did I catch that. ... Clever girl...
The Cotton Alley: Wow, got it at first. The Forest: Was pretty obvious. The Hospital: OF COURSE >:O The Salt Factory: HOW I NO RECOGNIZE ADVENTURES OF LOLO! D: Hell: Never played... The Rapture: Obvious... The End: 6 words: How. I. Didn't. F******. Recognize. Pokémon. D:
The Flipside. Save states? What do you think I am, a cheater? I hate using save states. I don't really use them in a game, but, the problem is...I don't have a nes controller.
what pisses me off is when this game came to PS4, they altered the music for these level intro's and almost completely destroyed what they were parodying
Good job putting this together. Shame about Egger not showing up properly-Adventures of Lolo was the first game I got with my NES, so it was cool to see SMB reference it like this.
In the epilogue, when the castle is destroy, we can see the castle explose and we can heard a remix of "where is my mind" by Pixies ... I'm sure that's a reference to the end of "Fight club" ...
The reason he did this like that is because there are different music sounds. So the first time you hear the Super Meat Boy music and sounds, and the second time you hear the original game's music and sounds.
Thank you. The only one I totally didn't recognize at all was the Lolo one, and that's been bugging me. I only played that game once, and it was a rental. The only other one I didn't get right away was Pokemon. Hard to believe, but I've never owned a Gameboy of any kind.
The more amazing thing is that since Kirby got more and more popular than Lolo and Lala, Lololo and Lalala became more popular than them, even appearing as supporting characters in the Kirby animated series (Kirby: Right Back at Ya!) but there they were called Fololo and Falala, for some reason.
SMB referenced mega man on lvl 5 - the same level you unlock the kid from IWBTG on, but IWBTG parodied the exact same reference as their title cut-scene. Plus, the kid warp zone is on level 7, the number of bosses on IWBTG.
Sort of ironic, actually, how The Binding of Isaac references a lot to Super Meat Boy, also by Edmund McMillen, and Super Meat Boy references to a lot of other games as you can see in this video, so The Binding of Isaac is sort of referencing to a reference itself.
You have to admit, most of these things are obvious, with the exception of the adventure of Lololo, witch was kinda expected cause... well, they had to have a Kirby reference somewhere! :D
No, Lolo was a character from a completely different series, but when HAL released Kirby's Dreamland few years later, they created two characters based of Adventures of Lolo, Lololo [based off Lolo] and Lalala [based of Lala, Lolo's girlfriend]. God, I sound like such a nerd.
I knew the Ninja Gaiden one, Adventures of Lolo, Pokemon, Castlevania and Mega Man 2. I would've known about the Ghosts and Goblins one two, but I've never seen that cutscene in Super Meat Boy before.
Ones that I found by myself: Bubble Bobble, Street Fighter II, Castlevania, Mega Man, and Ghosts & Goblins. And if you include Meat Ninja, then Mortal Kombat.
I knew quite a few of these. I knew Castlevania, MM2, Ninja Gaiden, and Ghosts n Goblins right away. I somehow failed to see Generation I Pokemon intro though.
I have played and beaten all of these games except Bubble Bobble and Adventures of Lolo. First time I saw this video I hadn't touched any of them and it's cool coming back.
Sadly, the Ghosts and Goblins reference was the only one I didn't get, hence viewing this video to find out, lol. I'm also guessing the Super Meat World intro is a reference to Star Wars Episode III?

Imagine a parody game where it's like normal Mega Man 2 until Wily kicks Mega Man off the building
Fun Fact: In Japan, Mega Man was called Rockman, but Joseph Morici decided to change the name because he said it sounded terrible.

Having beaten GnG I'd say Cotton Alley could be harder. Then again I never had much patience for it.

i cant believe they played thoose good games like pokemon or ninja gaiden
THAT MEGA MAN WAS SO OBVOUIS and pokemon
+Bennett Taylor and ninja gaiden. Those 3 were pretty obvious references but i didnt knew about the others.

Adventures of lolo and bubble bobble were easy also
at the end with the red blob thing it is a thing about sponebob or another thing were squidward gets hit in the face and turns beautiful
Most of those scenes can be seen in I Wanna Be The Guy too.

Sadly, the Ghosts and Goblins reference was the only one I didn't get, hence viewing this video to find out, lol. I'm also guessing the Super Meat World intro is a reference to Star Wars Episode III?
