  • This is a very different podcast for many reasons, first of which, my good friend John Perry from Greene Country Fertilizer and Lawncology joins me to talk about the Netflix documentary, "Kiss The Ground."
When I saw this documentary, it actually made me more proud of what we do in our lawns everyday.

Thank you my friend. Great conversation and I hope people take a minute to watch the documentary and maybe come away with some new thought processes for their own lawns. Great to see you as always!!!

Great content, being from Iowa I've been watching Ray and Gabe for a few years now. I think I've talked my neighbors into letting me seed a 9 way mix of cool & warm season plants and just letting it grow.

Starting my second lawn reno within a year during my 'free time' this Fall. The commentary about exposed soil is motivating. I've been missing the podcast, glad to hear you guys back on air! We're due for rain and cooler temps this week. Anxious to see how my cool-season lawn will respond. Found a nice 2012 Toro Recycler for Dad's Day and ready to see how she cuts..

Great talk gentlemen! Thanks for the overview of the doc, and I learned quite a bit. John needs to get some messaging out to the Utah community about our drought (heck, the whole SW is in a BAD drought) and the many HATERS of those of us who want to keep our LAWNS ALIVE!! Help John!!

Al, just had a chance to sit back and genuinely enjoy the documentary. I will probably watch it again to see what I missed this time. Amazing things that we can do to not only improve soil fertility but to increase the look of our landscapes. Hopefully the feds can sort it out on the hill! Great recommendation!! Thank you for the podcasts and the continued content, always learning even when topics are covered repeatedly (repetition is good for the developing brain 😉) Thanks again, looking forward to the next one!

I've been watching a lot of farming channels this year and they are doing cover crops and are running no tillage programs and another one doesn't do cover crops but doesn't till the ground I'm finding it very interesting of why they are doing it and now I understand the science behind it so cool

Al and JP, excellent video and I really enjoyed getting the soil master JP on his thoughts. Honestly I watched this a long time ago and the first thing I thought about was”this is what John is talking about”. I’ve incorporated a soil first approach in my yard over the last few years and the results are fantastic. I think this discussion is all so needed since I live in UT and it seems the narrative is anti grass due to the water shortage we’re having. We need these discussions even more!

Great show. Will definitely have to watch the documentary. Listening to another podcast that is talking about cover crops in farming very interesting. Farmers I believe are more like us they want the biggest return on investment of inputs. And they also want to leave the dirt better for the next generation.
Great show keep up the awesome work thanks.

While I don’t really get into the preachy documentaries I really get into the science of things. Tumble down the rabbit hole one might say. Good job on bringing this to the lawn community. Shows that we all can make a difference not matter how small.

I've been following this processes in the lawn for a while, mixing things I've learned from regenerative farming, wildlife food plotting and lawn care nuttery. I have a St Augustine lawn (touch of Bermuda), during the winter I broadcast ryegrass, oats and annual clover for more root growth, but I have wet soil (gumbo clay), so I have to keep something growing all year long or it's soup!

Fascinating talk I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. I have a 15,000 sq ft St. Aug lawn which looks great, thanks to you Allyn. I also have a 10,000 sq ft garden in which I grow tomato’s, peppers, eggplant, okra, sweet potatoes, and a ton of herbs (I’m in Miami so I grow things suitable for my agricultural zone). What do I use in my garden? Floragreene, Microgreene, RGS, Humic 12. My yields are off the charts, I think you need to target this DIY market as well. I would love to see some content on your videos regarding the use of Greene County products for this purpose. I’ve been trying to create a small food forest, you should look up the work of Geoff Newton in regards to creating a micro environment, something he calls a food forest.

Haven't watched the Documentary but I think its also worth mentioning that we don't need to throw down heavy all the time. Maybe if your thin or your trying to get the grass to grow out of some damage but 1lb on the ground per month during the growing season is too much for an already healthy lawn. Too much N can cause some of the same problems as tillage as the soil microbes blow through this all you can eat N buffet taking a lot of the carbon with it. N drives the bus for sure but take note of some of these other key ingredients we have as well, humic acid, sea weed, micros and for those of us in sandy soils K is almost always lacking. So far I've been pretty happy with how far .25lb per 1000 per month goes with greene punch and some humic/micros. I guess we'll see how this summer as we're only 22 days into FL fert ban. I think the Zoysia will do just fine though.

How much carbon does a single volcanic eruption release into the atmosphere versus man? Could it be nature works in cycles with or without man here? The Great Lakes used to be covered by glaciers? Where did they go? Man didn’t melt them.

Is mechanic aeration similar to farmers using tillage? I’m curious if this is why liquid aeration was created in the first place as it appears there is no need to mechanically aerate if the soil is performing well from proper cultural practices, i.e. mowing, watering, and proper fertilizing.

  • @jeffborkowski

Allyn, the suggestion that maintaining residential lawn / turfgrass in the LCN way is beneficial to the planet and environment WITHOUT addressing at all the net effect in terms if carbon etc seems shortsighted. So turf locks in/filters etc but that comes at what cost maintained as you promote? What are the environmental costs of sourcing raw materials, producing, transporting, applying all the chemicals we apply to our lawns? I don't know the answer to this question but am interested to know. For the record, I own your guides and buy your and GCF products; I am a customer. But if you're going to have a discussion about science and facts, make it balanced.

NASA satellite photos also show that increased atmospheric CO2 has already made the entire earth greener
So, if their theory is correct that "covering the earth with more greenery" would solve the solve 'the climate crisis.' isn't global warming already defeating itself all by itself?
