  • In this video I take apart Canon 100-400mm lens. It was broken from a drop and Canon said they could not fix it, so I decided I would do a teardown video to see just what is inside a Canon EF 100-400 mm L Series lens. I am amazed at the engineering of these lenses and marvel at whoever puts these things together! Simply awesome!

Well done on taking it apart! Keeping track of the parts (if you're not a Canon lens tech with the service manual) involves taking lots of photos &/or video at every step, laying out each disassembled part in order in a known orientation (face up/down, and how rotated), so you can reassemble in reverse order, and using different coloured sharpie pen &/or tape to mark where each screw/component goes where, wherever possible. Also, use Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) screwdrivers, NOT Philips head, and avoid power tools as they can strip screw heads or threads respectively.

Very helpful to know! Thanks so much for the info and I had no idea about the JIS screwdriver!
