- Ford F150 6R80 Transmission Dipstick Install 2009-2014
I installed a Performance Automotive PA68404 transmission dipstick in my driveway in less than an hour. I don't know why Ford didn't install one, but I figured for long term care it couldn't hurt.
This is the link to the dipstick:www.jegs.com/i/Performance-Au...
Since I did this video years ago, like everything else the price has skyrocted.

Great video. I have the PA dipstick kit for my 2014 Mustang GT and tried to install it yesterday and could not get the tube to go down into the fitting. My kit is about five years old and is the older style with the two O-rings on the end of the tube. My adapter that goes into the transmission has a ridge in it that the O-ring was getting caught on because on the Mustang, you have to insert the tube into the adapter at a slight angle since there is not enough room overhead to go straight down into the adapter. I called PA and they are having me send them the tube and adapter to see what can be done.
Thanks for watching.. Good Luck with the revised parts. I'm sure the revised parts will work well.
Hopefully they give me the updated parts. If not, I guess what I have is useless.
Did they say they were sending it?
I have not heard anything from them since I sent my old one back to them so I don't know what the status is.
@@Mr2004MCSS That stinks. Hopefully you will get an update soon.
Great video. I bought a 2014 F150 about 2 yrs ago and I do most of the work on it myself now thanks to videos like yours:) It's at 93k miles now so I'm about to change the trans fluid and filter soon:) This will make that task MUCH easier now for me. Thanks again
Price of this is up to $250 bucks!! Can't bring myself to pay that much. Thanks for your videos!!
Great video! I have 2012 f150 so these videos help a lot. Didn't even know you could get that dipstick kit till your video. I will have to get one of those.
I think it's awesome that a kit was available to do this! Now they weren't using their dipstick jimmy when the designed one without!
Saw your video searching for F150 trans videos and went ahead and bought the dipstick kit. The design has changed a little bit...the end of the braided line that plugs into the threaded adapter on the trans doesn't have o-rings any more. There's now a barbed rubber bushing mounted over the stainless end of the braided line...better grip/seal than a pair of o-rings. Kit also comes with a filler hose. That's a short piece of clear hose with a machined fitting on one end. Fitting inserts into the upper end of the braided line when the dipstick is removed. The clear hose fits over the end of my $3 parts store funnel perfectly Makes filling the trans a whole lot less painful than before. The kit instructions also have the bracket installed under the firewall ground terminal lug so the bracket sits flush against the firewall.
Many thanks for making the video! Had no idea anybody made a dipstick kit for the F150 6R80 trans. Need to change my trans filter & fluid and wasn't really excited about filling / checking fluid underneath the truck with the engine running.
Link to new dipstick and filler? If this worked out for you, I will probably buy it and put an aftermarket trans pan that has a drain plug on it!
Thanks for all of the transmission, transfer case, and differential videos. I have a 2012 XLT 3.7 and I need to change all of those. I have done some maintenance on the truck like the water pump, all oil changes, and the fuse 27 relocation but this will be the most work I have done on the truck. I'm 18 and this is my first vehicle, I definitely plan on keeping the truck for awhile so I want to get all of that done so none of it fails. I'm at 116k and I definitely don't want to wait for the 150k recommended. I really like the idea of the dipstick but I don't really want to pay $200 for one. Thanks for the informative videos.
Super helpful
Just picked up a '14 Raptor and I will be doing this ASAP.... Thanks for a very well made how-to vid...~
I just bought a 09 F150 I looked all over for the transmission dipstick thanks for the video now I know what I'm doing as (Industrial) mechanic I believe in checking and changing my oils on regular basis 👍
I have a 2009 F150 with the 6R80 that came with a factory dipstick tube! Apparently some models were marketed as a sealed "maintenance free" trans while others were given a dipstick for some reason. No idea why Ford would do this.
Anyways the factory tube is shit and is prone to corrosion and leaks, which is why I came here.
@@Lindrios my truck has a dip stick but you have to crawl underneath to check it 🤦🏻♂️😐
This is Great. Its convenient, saves time and less effort. keep up the good work. Thanks for the video.
My set up was different. Instead of 2 O- rings it came with a full length sleeve seal. Remove it, compress it and install into adapter. Applied a thin coat of trans fluid to seals.
Wife and I JUST bought a 2013 Expedition with the same tranny and I was looking all over for the dipstick! Then I read the manual and thought to myself what a great way to get owners to return to Ford for regular servicing!! This is awesome and exactly what I need! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!!
I have the same dipstick on my 09 f-150 king ranch and it's great and I agree that the instructions are a little miss leading. Good video man.
Thanks, I'm looking all over for the dipstick so I could check the fluid level. No Dipstick
I love this, didn’t even know that they made this. Might have to get one for my 07 explorer. Thanks for sharing.
I placed your video on the FordRaptorForum I am member of.Subscribed to your channel also.Excellent!!
Awesome and thanks for the good words!!!!
Great “How To”..... keep up the good work!
Thanks for the video bro... exactly what I needed!
Torino? My pop had a 68 Torino GT 390 4spd back in the day. I don't think a day goes by that he doesn't regret selling it.
Take care Dude... subscribed!!
👍🏽🇺🇸
I’ve had a few. Including a 69 390. Currently have the 73. Thanks and have an awesome day!
This is exactly what I need for my 07 explorer, it has the 6r60 transmission.
Thank you for your helpful videos. I just hit 100k and didn't even notice that I have no dipstick, until I went out to check out what all I needed to replace my trans fluid and filter.
Shoulda been a video of the fit I threw when I learned that there was no dipstick in the engine bay.
WTH?
Great video. Thank you for posting.
Very nice job of showing how to do this. Crazy that Ford did not include a trans-dipstick that you can access from the top of the vehicle in the first place. Not trying to take away from your video but I made my own 4 years ago using the Ford factory transmission cap by drilling a hole into the top centre of the cap and then soldering a nipple to the inside of the cap. I attached a cummins engine oil dipstick(nylon outer tube) and cut it to the proper length. Your setup looks nicer being all polished and comes pre made so that removes guess work for the installer.
Thanks for taking a look at my channel.
Good job man!
great work
Great Video.
Good to see, thanks for the demo. Should be able to fill tranny through that tube as well? I own 2012 SVT Raptor, and 2014 FX4 F150 with the solid 5.0 L good times offroad
Very helpful video thank you!!
Nice video! I dont know why the hell Ford didn't put a dipstick on there. Some friekin genius designer snuck that one in!
Because jackasses kept ruining transmissions by putting in the wrong fluid.
Thank you for this video!!
Your Welcome. Thanks for watching..
Great video
Awesome job God blessed you
I appreciate it, brother. Now, I have to buy a dip stick kit for my 2019 F150 3.3 6 - speed Automatic transmission .
I found a kit on Amazon for 39.00 dollars.
Hi..what kit did you buy?
I wish you would have - maybe you did - checked the level with the factory dip stick and then compared it to the level shown on your new dip stick. Nonetheless I've got this upgrade on my to do list. Thanks.
Mis respetos para uste bro me gustan sus videos y sus boenos trabajos que ase 👍🤝
Well done! Thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
👍 very helpful makes things much easier ty
Glad I could help.
Thanks going to put mines in my 2014 Ford F150
Thanks for posting this video! What I can’t get over his why this silly thing is so expensive! I have a 2014 Ford F150 XLT crew cab and to replace the one on mine it’s a whopping $250! 😱😡🤯 I know it’s a pain in the butt but for now I’ll just have to crawl under my vehicle to check it because I flat refused to pay that much. Get it down around $100-$150 and we might make a deal. Until that day comes they can stick this thing where the sun don’t shine!
Mine is a bit different. I had a flat o-ring on the original dipstick and no o-rings or grooves on the bottom of the new tube. Mine came with a rubber boot instead of the o-rings.
52-53 subscribers, now 1,592. Good job.
Thank you Sir..
Thats good but thats not a locking dipstick! The 6r80 transmission is sealed and needs vacuum to operate correctly. I suggest the B&M 22200 dipstick kit, its locking and the dipstick screws down like that cap on the OEM dipstick cover.
Super das muss ich auch haben👍
I guess it would be nice to have a dipstick in the engine compartment to check the trans fluid but it seems like a lot of work and expense when there is a hard mounted dipstick you demonstrated replacing on the trans reservoir. Granted, it's not a simple process to get the truck elevated and level to check it but since it's something we would only do at long intervals, it seems like a lot of work is being performed to avoid a marginally greater amount of work once a year. I'd like to see how you drain/add fluid to the trans if that's been done.
It is annoying that Ford didn't make this easier and I appreciate the effort you took to show how this could be done. Good job.
Thanks again.. I appreciate all feedback.
I dont have this dipstick but I have drained and filled mine its not to bad. I dropped the pan last time but you can easily disconnect the cooler line and let it empty the pan.
Thank you. I’ll be buying one b
I just spoke with Jets... performance automatic makes the dipstick and sells it through Jegs with part # 732-PA68404....Price is $200.71...OUCH!!!
thanks, man a new subscriber i hope you have a shop to take make car there cliffside park nj
Man I hope they have that for my 2017
Thank you for the video. I just purchased a 2008 Ford Expedition and I was surprised it did not have a dipstick. Will this aftermarket product work on my engine 5.4 liter V8 thank you.
One size fits all my opinion!
thanks
One more thing, I assume no issues with this install? I’m definitely looking at getting this upgrade, along with differential covers you don’t have to remove to change the fluid.....LOL
What kit did you use? Looks like a good fit
Good job; can u add fluid thru this port?
just ordered one myself, do you still like it and is it still sealed with no leaking?
You did a really nice job on your video, good job with the camerera and sound. I have a 2009 f150 and it looks like the setup on mine is exactly the same, so thanks so much for the walkthru. Yes it seems a little pricey but I'm not doing a Ford dealer flush to get the fluid exchange, I'm just goiing to do the 7-8 quart drain and refill because it's a time tested procedure. Just being able to refill and check the level from the engine compartment top end is worth the money to me by the third time I do it.Would like to get a part number for that O ring but I'll probably just fish out the old one. Would love to get a pan with a drian plug, Dorman makes one for the 6R80 post 2010 for a very reasonble price but it won't fit a 2009 according to their tech guy. Have a nice day and thanks again.
geoffrey anon Thanks for watching. It’s very appreciated.
I had no idea Dorman made one. Thanks for the info!I just changed my filter yesterday and had I known I would have ordered it. Next time! Also the dipstick is on my list. Thanks for the video!
What kit is this be super nice to know
Who makes the dipstick conversion kit you installed? Much appreciated in advance for info!😊
The Amazon link doesn’t work anymore. Where can I get this? Great video, thank you 👍
My line came in but I’m missing the adapter piece to go in the transmission
I have no luck finding this kit I click on the link in description but say can’t find the page
What a great idea a dipstick in a transmission. Not sure what Ford was thinking by not providing a dipstick. Can you tell me where you ordered this? There seems to be more than one discussed online. I would like to get the one from the video. By the way great job posting this. Until today I didn’t know there was even a small dipstick in my 2012 F150 eco boost
Ford was thinking, like many manufacturers that now do this, IDIOTS keep pouring in the wrong fluid and ruining their transmissions, hurting their reputation. Solution...keep the dipsticks away from the "dipsticks" that are too dumb to use Mercon LV like the manual says, and just pour in whatever. The road to transmission failure is paved with good intentions.
Check while running
Thanks for sharing this great video. I plan on purchasing one. This may be a stupid question but I'm planning to change the transmission fluid on my 2010 Ford F-150. Will a funnel fit in the top opening when the dipstick is taken out when refilling with new transmission fluid?
It actually came with an adapter, so when you remove the dipstick you can fill the transmission from the top.
Also consider getting an aftermarket transmission pan on Amazon that has a built-in drain bolt that OEM doesn't.
Curious do you think that you could use a pump on the dipstick tube to extract fluid?
Hello was wondering how long is the dipstick itself
Great video! I was wondering where you purchased that kit and how much did it cost? Thanks
Thanks for watching. I bought it from Jegs, link is in the description. Was around $190
Where did you get the dubstep
And how does one put more fluid into the transmission now? Through that opening in he engine bay?
where do buy it at,,who sells it ?
The engineer don't install a dip stick so you have to go and pay for a trany oil change but the thing is when your trany break down cause of an oil leak they do what ever they can to void the warranty saying it is your fault cause you didn't check the oil level and haven't notice the leak.
Thanks for the video mate. My only concern is; it will take forever to fill up the transmission when you'll replace the fluid ( unless you remove the dip stick to fill it up)
It cam with an adapter and it filled relatively easily. Thanks for watching.
Either way, it's gotta be easier than laying under the truck for 15 minutes transfer pumping bottle after bottle next to a hot cat. Fucking hate trans fluid changes on this truck.
The engineers didn't install a dipstick because dipsticks of America are too stupid to use the correct fluid, and thus ruin the tranny and come crying for warranty service. A lot of manufacturers do this. However my 2011 Fusion 2.5L did have a dipstick. Go figure.
Not sure what he paid for this 6 years ago but it's now pushing $300 and out of stock everywhere. Forget it.. I'll do it the old fashioned way every 50k miles or so. Of course, I have a lift, so I am blessed. :)
Is adding transmission fluid difficult through the dip stick tube? Ford tells me the transmission filter does not need to be changed.
Do you know where I can order just this bracket. Not having any luck finding it on the internet
The stick tube just sits in the adapter ?
Good video. I know I'm late to the show, but the link to the part doesn't seem to work. Maybe this particular part is no longer available. 🤷♂️ Does anyone know if there is a dipstick like this that is available?
Is there a part number for this kit. the amazon link isn't working
Link to amazon? The description link would not load
Thats cool but not for 200$ had my hopes up til i saw the price ill still be getting dirty checking it but im still young
This is a Really nice one but they have cheaper one from $18.00 autozone to $50.00, 100.00, 150.00 and so on
That’s good.
@@MyTorino hey can I ask what length I need for my 2013 f 150?
Can you fill it from the top?
is that dipstick still working out well for you? Enjoyed the how to nicely done! did you consider putting some thread locker on the dipstick mount on the transmission?
Still working well. I just installed per the instructions.
Just curious do you still check it hot with this dipstick? Or does the kit instruct you how to accurately check the fluid level with the new dipstick? My understanding is the torque converter holds a lot of fluid when running that drains back in to the pan, so you pretty much always check it running. Good vid.
Does anyone know how to get one? I clicked the link and nothing comes up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Follow up comment a year after I installed this dipstick...Pro:. Obviously very handy checked ng fluid rather than the under truck method with the original Ford set up.
Con: Fitting where the dipstick assembly mates up to the transmission leaks slightly when the truck sits for several days without being operated. Leak occurs where the dipstick housing fitting mates up with the transmission. This is due to the fluid that's up inside the transmission settling down into the pan and riding above the level of the fitting. Fitting isn't threaded like the originsl Ford fill plug. It is a non-thread push-in fitting with o-rings. When I go out of town on work travel and the truck sits unused for several days the trans fluid settles into the pan, rises above the fitting level into and leaks. This static leak is the only leak / issue I've noticed. No leaks or other problems when the truck is used on a regular basis.
Manageable issue but not very happy given the cost of the kit.
i know this is old but check your transfer case/transmission atmospheric vent tube, if it gets clogged like mine did it will push tranny fluid up dipstick tube and cause what you’re describing. The fluid level is never above the height of that fitting at rest unless you have over filled it.
@@MegaTapdog Thanks! I've got a 4x 2 so no xfer case. I'll look into the tranny vent. Posts on several Ford truck forums mentioned how these "sealed" transmissions can hold fluid up in the trans body for several days when not driven similar to how motor oil stays up in an engine for a bit after it's shut down. The leak from the joint where the dipstick tube fitting meets the trans happens when that trans fluid finally works its way back down into the pan. That's typically when I get the leaking...when the truck has been parked for a week while I'm out of town, etc.
I know it’s been a long time but could you send me the pdf to order one of those dipstick’s for a Ford F-150 transmission
Where can I find this
Would this fit my 2016 auto transmission? I believe I have the 6R80? Not having much luck finding the right one.
Nice looking product. To check their work, I would have checked the oil level on the factory dipstick first and then compared to the level on the new after install. Makes me a little nervous to assume they got it calibrated spot on.
Exactly what i was thinking. Is this thing adjustable so it can show low when the fluid is actually low...
if its not hot and warmed up and running his fluid is low.
Good observation
Where you get that Ford F-150 trans dipstick?
Who makes the kit and where’d you get it?
So, you did this with transmission cold, and when you took the OEM dipstick out, you lost no fluid? I've seen some videos saying you need to have engine running in Park before removing it? Comments? Thanks
Did this PN #PA68404 come with the firewall bracket? I'm not seeing the bracket on Jegs or Summit.
Yes the bracket came in the kit.
Been looking for this. Can't find for the 6R80 tranny. Nor anything about the adapter kit. Help.
I’m a lil late to the show. Amazon is out of these dipsticks. Do you know anywhere else that sells them?
it look like measure fluid correctiy
Hi..I can't find the dipstick on Amazon is there a different one ?
Where do you buy it?
The way it should have come from the factory!!
Where did you buy that 6r8o transmission dipstick at? I can't seem to find it.
Thanks for checking my channel out. I’m returning the same! I’ll return often !
Compre una Ford 150 2013 , donde puedo comprarlo y cuánto vale
What is the brand of that dipstick?
