Nice video as always sir ! I learned a few stuff I did not knew about the 101 actualy even I thought I knew everything about it hahaha. Such a great synth, would love to get one at some point but meanwhile i'll stick to my 202.
SH is not for sample and hold, but because synthesizer in japanese is Shinse (シンセ) there fore the first line of synthesizer from Roland start with SH. As simple as that 😉
Thank you 🙏🏻 ... The ENV will cut the sound out.. but I can only say that will occur when other sliders are in context. So, try copying the settings I have in this clip and adjust your FREQ, the ENV & RES.. and you'll see what I mean 🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/users/shortsvYguxarnbjo
If you are learning to use the Roland S-1, here are the labels/menus on the S-1 that map back to similar SH-101 functions (SH-101 -> S-1): Monophonic mode: Shift + Poly TUNE: TUNE -> Shift + Range VCO (Oscillator): MOD -> LFO PULSE WIDTH -> Shift + Square wave knob VCO Mode (Right of pulse width) -> Shift + PWM Src (LFO is on by default) SOURCE MIXER (Oscillator): Sub Oscillator Mode/Octave -> Shift + SUB OCT VCF (Filter): KYBD -> Shift + FILTER KYBD (then adjust values MOD -> LFO VCA: VCA Mode -> Shift + Amp ENV: ENV mode -> Shift + ENV TRG
Thanks.. and you're welcome 🤓..I recommend the Juno Synth walk-throughs too.. particularly, the Juno-6 walk-through.. it's almost like a bigger 'polyphonic' version of the 101.. great 'first synth' or way to learn about 'subtractive synthesis' ☺🙏🏻ua-cam.com/video/fkMqwTQnXBQ/v-deo.html
Nice, you're a repair guy?! ..throw down your area code if you like, anyone from your area reading this in need of a synth service they can look you up 👍🏼
Thanks for pointing that out 👍🏼 ..turns out I’ve quoted a guy who claims it does in 'his' .. but, then he claims his is a Jupiter-8 Rev. A 🤔 .. regardless of whether or not that's accurate, I'll edit this out. Thanks 🙏🏻
Very Nice! Should be helpful once I dust off my MS-1. I often find myself starting a new patch with no memory of why I changed the ADSR/VCA to gate mode… or why the synth is laying in my bed, smelling like expensive perfume and oriental tobacco. 🤔
The thing I cannot understand on this or on other synths is the envelope for the VCF... you already have a FREQ and RES setup, in the video the KYBD is up, mod down... so then you start dialing in the Envelop for the filter... Soooo... what does that do???? It's changing the sound of the filter along with the settings for ADSR as per the envelope... but how so? What does that mean? You already have the filter set, is that envelope changing those setting to change with the ADSR? OKAY, so in theory that's what it's doing... but what makes it more confusing is with the evelop down, you hear almost nothing... so that's the sound of the filter with no envelope? So you simply NEED the envelope... so why a slider that enables it and makes it more or less pronounced? It almost just seems like another low pass filter with a different shape or something.
The ENV slider in the VCF section applies the amount of ADSR envelope to the filter. If you set the VCA switch to gate, the envelope will not be applied to the VCA. The VCA will open on a key press, then close on a key depress. If the ENV amount is set to zero in the VCF there will be no ADSR envelope applied to the VCF. The setting of the VCF FREQ will be what you hear.

Cheers 🙏🏻 the 202 is awesome! - so under rated 👌🏼 pretty much a 101 with VCA/VCF accent 🥰
@@tonelab Indeed, and with an awesomely weird sequencer hahaha.
Totally! 🤓
SH is not for sample and hold, but because synthesizer in japanese is Shinse (シンセ) there fore the first line of synthesizer from Roland start with SH. As simple as that 😉
Thanks for pointing that out 🙏🏻
I knew it.
Really wonderful video! I own a 101 and the boutique one. And I can use it very well. However never seen a video like this about the 101! Amazing 🤩
Hey thanks very much 🙏🏻 how does the SH01a stack up next to the original? 🤓
@@tonelab honestly absolutely close in my opinion. I also love the upgraded LFO.
Wow. The behringer can't do most of any of the cool tricks you showed here.
I just bought one on eBay for £850
this is the most concise video about the 101 that i’ve ever watched. Is it normal to cut the sound if I push the envelope all the way up?
Thank you 🙏🏻 ... The ENV will cut the sound out.. but I can only say that will occur when other sliders are in context. So, try copying the settings I have in this clip and adjust your FREQ, the ENV & RES.. and you'll see what I mean 🙏🏻

Thank - you for the Tutorial 🎶😎🎶
Had a Casio MT before the blue SH that taught me how to synthesize!
Brilliant video thanks so much :) learnt some new stuff about my 101
Wonderfully described, thank you 🙏
If you are learning to use the Roland S-1, here are the labels/menus on the S-1 that map back to similar SH-101 functions (SH-101 -> S-1):
Monophonic mode: Shift + Poly
TUNE:
TUNE -> Shift + Range
VCO (Oscillator):
MOD -> LFO
PULSE WIDTH -> Shift + Square wave knob
VCO Mode (Right of pulse width) -> Shift + PWM Src (LFO is on by default)
SOURCE MIXER (Oscillator):
Sub Oscillator Mode/Octave -> Shift + SUB OCT
VCF (Filter):
KYBD -> Shift + FILTER KYBD (then adjust values
MOD -> LFO
VCA:
VCA Mode -> Shift + Amp
ENV:
ENV mode -> Shift + ENV TRG
Thanks 🙏🏻
I have red. Love it. But I do like the blue. I have a blue SH01a
Best sh 101 tuto 🎉
Great job!!!!!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video learned a couple of new things I didn't know before thank you
Wow i think this is the best Synth Walkthrough i‘ve ever seen. 👍 Thank you very much ☺️

Dude. Thank you for this!! I have an sh101 that I just serviced.
Nice, you're a repair guy?! ..throw down your area code if you like, anyone from your area reading this in need of a synth service they can look you up 👍🏼
Sir! Great video. keep on that way.
The CEM3340 was not used in the Jupiter 8. The Jupiter 8 had discreet VCOs. Great video otherwise!
Thanks for pointing that out 👍🏼 ..turns out I’ve quoted a guy who claims it does in 'his' .. but, then he claims his is a Jupiter-8 Rev. A 🤔 .. regardless of whether or not that's accurate, I'll edit this out. Thanks 🙏🏻
very good explanation - thanks a lot !
Grey all the way!! :D I love my SH101. Good job with the video.
Thanks very much 🙏🏻 ...I wouldn't mind one of each actually! 🤓 🤍♥️💙
I have very fond memories of my grey sh101, my first synth. I've never seen it in other colours.
yeah my first was Blue.. and for my 7th birthday I got a copy of the Wrestling Album 😆 .. and there was a guy on the cover with the Pink/Red 101 😮👍🏼
You had to use tone loc for the tone adjustment references. 😂😂😂
Tone Loc?! ..ohh, the Tuning reference 😆 ..that's '50 Cent' 😉
Blue
My favourite! 🥰
I bought mine a few months after it came out. It's a brilliant little synth and always seems to fit in the mix
True! I used to control mine from either my 808 or my 202.. so easy to pull a great sound on them too 👌🏼
Love your videos!
Thanks very much 🙏🏻
Very Nice!
Should be helpful once I dust off my MS-1. I often find myself starting a new patch with no memory of why I changed the ADSR/VCA to gate mode… or why the synth is laying in my bed, smelling like expensive perfume and oriental tobacco. 🤔
But none of these tips apply to the ms-1 😂
this is a good video
Thanks 😉
Thanks
Cheers! 🙏🏻
