Hey guys, thanks so much for your immense support for this video! In the last few weeks views and fun comments/questions has skyrocketed! I realised I forgot to include a link to my Patreon - so if you'd like me to make more videos like this, maybe consider supporting me at Patreon.com/jedmakesnoise Thanks a million! Love your support!
Very groovy, reminded me of Bites album maybe a bit of the choke in there somewhere. My wife and I are starting a music thing so I will definitely show her this video the thing that drove it home for me was how you used a synth and a drum machine and matched them up perfectly in the bass line. NOW I know what equipment to look for. Anyhow, thank you for your video.
Excellent video, but the steps need some clarification for EBM:
Step 1: Lock the target
Step 2: You bait the line
Step 3: Slowly spread the net
haHA!
Yes!!!
Step 4: You catch the man. :-)
These step are only relevent if you have the written in your cells, the marks of a genius
NICE
Yes! I discovered EBM in 1988. At that time, a forbidden culture from the hostile west in communist Czechoslovakia :-)
I see "EBM" and a thumbnail with an A4 and SH101 and I insta-click :D
yep!
SAME
😁😎
It would be great if you did a video creating a post-punk song from scratch as well!
I've learned a lot just watching this video!
I think it was this cold and harsh synth sound that really pulled me in when I first heard something labelled EBM. And it sounded so different from other electronic music I had heard before.
Awesome video. Can you please create a tutorial on how to create Schwefelgelb-like bass? I think they're continuing the EBM legacy these days.
Schwefelgelb are great! They use a waldorf blofeld
Absolutely fantastic what you did in the most original minimalistic way. I don't know if you know this but you came nearly 100% close to capturing the song called... The bog...( Bigod20).... And as a side note Jean-Luc-de-Meyer of front 242 was one of the writters of the song. I'm 50 years old so I remember the beginning of all EBM..music. and to this day I still dance on the dance floor like a spastic teenager. Lol
Love that track! I got Jean Luc to sign my CD single of The Bog while he was touring with C-Tec in the late 90's
51 old man with a teen brain here. What a time to be alive! I will never forget flipping out and completely losing it on the dance floor of Frankfurts legendary techno disco Dorian Gray, while strobes lightened up the thick artificial fog and Aggressiva by 242 started. Also saw Skinny Puppy live in 1988, a life changing experience. EBM and Industrial forever!
The bog is so good, I love it for a few years before I discovered ebm (:
@@obiedecker4038 You lucky bastard, Techno Club Dorian Gray was the "source" at that time for electronic music, I envy you!
Please, don't take "bastard" seriously, it's Monty Python joke!
@@stumsi No way I’m taking it seriously. ☺️ I do feel blessed I was young at this time. No cell phones, no web, just us, record stores and night clubs.
Also getting some strong New Beat vibes from this. But then again, that was hugely influenced by EBM.
Dont know how i got here, but im sure as hell glad i did! This is such a insightful vid. Thanks man!
Just joined your channel. I’m new to EBM and love it. It isn’t mainstream or spoken about much so I didn’t know about it. Your tutorial was great! I usually play and performed death or slam metal but now I’ve gotten help making this type of music. I hope to see more of your videos!
This is also a killer song actually.
Id love it if you made the same for darkwave, that would be fanatstic
I rarely add comments, but this was cool to watch. I've been making EBM/electronic music the same way for a couple of years, nice to see someone actually explain and jam with analog instruments instead of watching someone fiddle about with VSTs for ten minutes.
This is great!
It's like you are baking a cake out of black leather and amphetamine.
Usefull info here but you forgot something. You really need 2 detuned saw oscillators (or 3 can work too if you wanna go nuts xixi ).
3:30 Excellent description of the psychological effect of syncopation...I listened to all of the groups you mentioned in the early 90s, especially Front 242...I liked your characterization of them as something like electro-punk.
8:43 Hate to go theory nerd on you, but if the notes you are playing are 1=F, b2=Gb, 3=A (major third)...and b7=Eb, then you are playing a major scale of some sort...It looks like an F Mixolydian mode with a b2 without more info (Phrygian scale has the b2 to but also a minor third, Ab -- not A. The minute you use A as the third, it is an F Major scale of some sort). The b2 darkens it for sure, but if you want to play in F minor, you must replace the A with an Ab...Still fucking sounds good whatever you call it.
Thanks for your input. I googled the heck out my modes for research but I must have missed that. Cheers
@@jeddyeval I don't think about modes very often anymore, so I forget what anything other than the modes of the major scale are called any more. This one might be a mode of the melodic minor, harmonic minor, or a synthetic scale. That said, major and minor is determined by the third of the scale. The b2 suggests phrygian, and the b7 suggests dominant, but you need a b3 to be minor. I agree it is good to explore modes at some point in your life, but at some point i just stopped caring about that stuff and it all went back into the recesses of my mind only to resurface spontaneously. One thing I learned when i explored them, however, is that a major mode can sometimes sound dark and a minor mode can sometimes sound bright. I think it is because of the context you put it in or the way you accent. Like i said, who cares what it is called -- I think it created the effect your were seeking. :D
@@BTsMusicChannel Nope, he's definitely playing phrygian dominant. The notes for F phrygian dominant are F, F♯, A, A♯, C, C♯, D♯. This is the 5th mode of harmonic minor, so the root of this scale would be B flat harmonic minor.. or A# if you prefer, which is A#, C, C#, D#, F, F#, A.
242 and EBM being two of my favorite musical things of all time this was an auto watch and auto sub for me
Fantastic explanation and great beat. EBM is all about snappy envelopes and fat analog tones. SH-101 and sequential Pro one are my top favorites. Drums; the kawai R100, Yamaha RX series are great.
Great video!!
Excellent demo (!) Personally I think Skinny Puppy is not EBM and gets more familiar with the early sounds of Dark Electro. I also want to add the importance of bands like DAF who experimented with the sound of punk towards electronic music and The Klinik who immersed themselves in the raw sounds of electro-industrial. Greetings from Bolivia (!)
Yes others have pointed out that I’ve got that part wrong, I must have misread a source when researching for this video.
I agree, I very much enjoy DAF also
Nop. They would describe skinny puppy as cyberpunk ,the second wave of industrial music.
@@callactm14 Front Line Assembly might be cyberpunk but I wouldn't call Skinny Puppy that ^-^
@@slowisthenewfast-music i wouldn't either
Well early skinny puppy is technically EBM…
When I bought the A4mk2 I was a bit disappointed in it as a synth but then realised its potential as a drum machine and cv/midi sequencer and that alone made it a keeper, in fact I go to it for drums more than my Analog Rytm
agree well Octatrack is even better! I use Octatrack for drum/samples and A4 for basslines and melodic stabs. Works great.
SKINNY PUPPY! My fav band back in my day growing up in Vancouver in 80/90s hanging around Granville Street, going to Lovafair. Go the "Texture" and I-Braineater art and clothing.
I can't believe I can watch this stuff on youtube. What a world.
At 10:24 Hit Play .. then = Awesomeness
Would you mind sharing the Microkorg patch? Sounds wonderful.
Honestly by far the best EBM tutorial ever... One question... I hear that clap sound In the drum track 4 often but have no idea how yiu get that style of clap or how to even describe it to search for
I made this style since 2 years and THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I SEE A TUTORIAL about this style :'( cause it's took me 2 years to realize we called this "EBM" sad.
Such a cool track you made, i had no idea what EBM was until i stumbled upon this video
Hi Jed, I love your Jesus and Mary Chain hair!!! 🖤🖤
EBM?
Quick, catchy and great way to understand the anatomy of an EBM track. Thank you!
Nice work. I also have such an old sh 101 synth (the original) and try to get out some nice music out of it.
hey guys, so I’m a complete beginner but it’s my dream to make EBM music as it’s one of my favorite genres of all time. Like I said, I’m a total beginner and my budget is currently quite limited, so I’ve got a question - are there any decent synths & drum machines you could recommend for a lower price? (whether the author of the video or someone in the comments who knows what’s up) I’d greatly appreciate it. Great track by the way :) I love it
Water Meadowland and Small Shot For the Ducks
He Walks in the Mud, Moves Aside the Reeds
No Clapping of Wings, no Motions Around.
Just the Singing Wind in An Ominous Silence.
What? You're wasting an ANALOG 4 on percussion and using the utterly ordinary SH101 for bass? Are you insane? It ruins the whole piece, it's way too soft and has almost no cut-through at all.
Weird comment I know ; but first video I've watched of you & you could rock the bald look. Just trying to make my comment as awkward as possible.
Killer, killer Track !!!! I hope to hear more soon! Thanks for sharing this with us all!
Not to be "that guy" but Skinny Puppy rarely did the 4 on the floor drum beat. Only tune that comes to mind is "Blue Serge". Great tutorial and track though. Cheers!
EBwhat? Sounds like techno with a little bit of dark electronics. A bit.
this is hot; what a sexy set up😍🤤well done👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What cable did you use Jed to link up the elektron with the SH101 through the click in hole? Also what hole do you put the other end of the cable in on the elektron?
the sound of belgium
new beat !
Keep makin noise Jed, lovin it
all this effort and learning and equipment to make goth girls dance. i commend you sir
That fkn drum machine is expensive fuckkk i want one..
iirc, Front 242 actually coined the term ebm.
I have never heard of the genre EBM until now. I've been around since the 80's and we had this style down as Belgium New Beat.
Is basically new beat. Is a dancy version of ebm
Body music and new beat are very similar and in some places synonyms for sure :)
New beat is slower. Check early front 242. That is not new beat.
Can I do the same thing with a drumbrute impact and a behringer ms1 ??
* *moving 3 steps forward - and 3 steps back* *
Counting rests in the bassline sequence programming and then having it match the beat perfectly is a PITA, looks like youve done this a few hundred times lol. Anyone else get it on the first try?
Tell me about it. It s hard
This is definitely inspiring me to create! Thank you!
Omg these drums are amazing!
Did you really only use these three pieces of equipment?
EBM drum is the best drum of Electronic music i
That Roland SH-101 is a little beast of a synth...I'm using "TAL-BassLine" which is free Vst clone and it sounds amazing!
I'm considering to buy "Roland SH-101" if it's in good condition, any advice would be welcome!
where can i find those kind of drums mate?
in love with the videos
Awesome! Now to sell a swimming pool of plasma to pay for the $8K+ in equipment...lol
not that expensive really, you can probs get an A4 or octatrack cheaper now the newer versions are out these days. As for the sh101 the roland boutique version is heaps cheaper and makes pretty much the same thing and more polyphone. You can do it!
great setup
Very Front 242 sounding at first but then it becomes that really cool vampire lounge EBM sounding. I love it! I've been listening and playing Industrial and experimental electronic music since around 1985. I bought Skinny Puppy's first album Remission and was hooked immediately. It's really cool to see younger people getting into it and keeping it alive.
Great to see that this genre gets some love! Are the drums samples (I guess they are)? If so, where did you get the snare?
No, the drums are synthesized. The Analog 4 is a 4 voice Analog synth.
Have you tried using the high-frequency tuned LFO to slightly FM modulate your percussion? It can add a LOT of grit on the Analog Four, and not a lot of people realize that you can do it.
No I haven’t tried that yet, I saw Cuckoo do that once I think...will try it out in future, thanks!
EBM = Electro basically
Damn! I definitely dance to that in the club
EbM Music sounds for me like Fixmer/McCarthy
Electro - Industrial
Whats your favourite DAW? You invented very basic Frigian-Islamic scale EBM. Are you doing it on a computer as well? Do you like metal? Industrial? Hell, Ministry?? Laibach? Godflesh?
The scale and tone at 11:00 sounds like Circling Overland
it's pronounced: neitzer ebb
Hi Jed, Any tips & tricks to do the same with my new Fantom 8 (which has the SH-101 expansions, etc...) hooked to my Hydrasynth Deluxe ? Thanks
Sequenced bass lines using sequencers huh? Good they didn't sequence the bass line with a microwave.
wow you are so amazingly funny you thought of that joke all by yourself ive printed it off and put in on my fridge
@@jeddyeval the reply took 6 days and that was it? I'm taking your picture OFF my fridge. I don't care HOW handsome you looked after graduating Sequencer College.
Reinds me of 'Nitzer Ebb'
Kinda reminds me a bit of the Electric Hellfire Club cover of Killing an Arab . Look over there!!!!!!!! * runs off with SH101 *
Ok the F frig/dom is F Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F
Good shit bro! That korg sounded spectacular on top of the elektron an Roland. Great mix of synths. Subbed
track id please :D
This makes me miss good ole Zoth Ommog
Dang, when you started that bass loop for the first time, I literally went “wooooooo!” :) If you make an ebm album, I’d buy it :)
But on a serious note this track is dirty
you should totally release this lol
Beautiful hair, man!
7:27 I've always described this sorta sound as if you hit a thong on the end of a PVC pipe
Edit: cool to see another Aussie here into EBM/Industrial etc!
This video has been very good for my future productions, thank you. 🤜🏻🤛🏻🔥
Gesaffelstein would love this
Saw that hair and subbed.
Great tutorial! I was wondering if you could create some MIDI files for all the elements? That would be brilliant - more so if we could download them! Thank you! Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb all the way!
lol at that minute 15 kek
:p
EBM is so fucking cool
Great video! We need more deep dives of genre specific techniques.
Skinny Puppy. Hell yeah! Nice jam on here. Kudos!
15:08 disaster avoided
Jed's nice with it...SBN RESONATE
My biggest take away was when you touch on phrygian scale. My bassline instantly sounded right once I change the key
Love this! Been thinking of trying to create some EBM next so this was inspirational. Love the synth line variations.
WHAT KNOBS DO?
Very cool stuff JeddyEval // Congrats!
new beat *
Really helpful tutorial to the modern ebm style. The sh101 seems a beast for it. I ve got a minibrute OG and just "hacked" the arp to a seq, but had no idea about the rests between notes, i thought it just goes like tatata all time, like postpunk and was underwhelmed... So i tried on the MB and its the taptempo it appears! There are so little helpful videos except boring ass sounding demos of it, so its hard to know these things. Thanks for the info! And the beat is mean!
by the way, its a saw wave not a triangle. xaxaxaxa just that small mistake. cheers!
Ah of course it is a saw. My mistake! Cheers
Good job! With the SH101 you have nailed the Front 242 sound pretty faithfully. You just need more samples and sound effects.
like cuckoo's younger and more musically inclined little brother
How many steps on that bassline? And how did you get the synth to get that many? My monologue does 16 but I’d love to do more
I'm an old bastard and a huge F 242 fan. You nailed the drums. Great job Jed! Thanks
