Back in the 90s when everyone wanted digital and midi I bought a mc202 together with a tr808, ms20, CS50 and a cs15 in a package for the modest price of about 500$ for the lot. Those were the days, 😀. I remember that I was really impressed with the sounds of the mc202, very punchy and really great filters. Great idea to compare oldies with new clones, I find it very useful. @@mattluderman7323 It was in Sweden sometime between 1989 an 1991, I cant remember exactly. In Sweden at that time nobody wanted synths and drum machines without midi. As far as synths go, I find the Behringer is more than capable. They are doing what the big synth companies are afraid to do. Recreating the Vintage Synths we all know and love and making it affordable.
Having watched so many of the videos, i came to the conclusion that soundwise, Behringer is more than enough to have the sh101 sound for a lot less. Having owned mc202 in the past, Behringer will do just good enough for me.
My first two synths were an SH-101 (I had the blue one) and then a Juno-60, which I'm still using. Well worth an emulation! (I remember one called an Emulator also, though I never actually saw one) Thanks for the info and Be Cool. Edit: I have several pieces of gear from Behringer and I'm most happy with them.
I've got a 101, great little synth. Also picked up an SH-01A second hand recently (pretty close in price to a new MS), it's worth looking at if you are looking for a modern equivalent, couple of extra options to the original including 4 note polyphony, patch memories and good MIDI implementation. Form factor obviously different. All depends on your priorities, I'm limited with space and bought it partly for it's portability.
@@maccagrabme tbh I've never done a head to head, sure there must be one on here somewhere. It obviously differs from the MS in that it's not aiming for similar analogue components to the orig. It's certainly pretty close. The polyphony kinda means you get a 4 voice Jupiter-ish vibe too 😆. As a Bitwig user the ability to use the modulators on any parameter is awesome! Small sliders make it a bit more fiddly, but you can map them to another controller for more precise control. I did think about an MS, but the 01A made more sense for me as I already have the 101 and as I said, my space is limited and the portability factor is good. One down side is the USB power 😒, but I have a dongle that helps to eliminate the noise and you can also take the audio into your DAW digitally via the USB.

I suppose to me they do sound very similar, both sounds are great for a music type, is one better than the other, I’m thinking no just slightly different at worse. Great comparison, I’d defo go for the 101 if I was Bill Gates, but the Behringer would do 98%+ of the job, so would be very happy with it.
I had the SH101 alongside my red MS101 4 years ago to see if I needed to keep the SH101 as it was just sat there unused for a long time, I went through almost every setting I could think of alongside each other and I got them sounding exactly the same on nearly everything, didn't notice any loss of bass compared with the 101, the noise generator was different, pink instead of white and I preferred the white on the 101 but for what I needed an Sh101 for the clone did just that. The SH101 tuning was off so needed recalibrating but was in factory mint condition, not a single mark or discolouration which made it harder to let go. Someone who uses these a lot and knows them inside out might insist on the OG but for the casual user the clone is a steal and they even have a mk2 now which is supposed to be even closer and cheaper, including the portamento fix.
They sound so close. I think Behringer did a great job. I think the Roland has some more beefy low end, but it is marginal. And probably you would roll off the low end in a mix. Scott: Maybe also try a Waldorf Pulse 2 to review. In my opinion, it is an overlooked analogue (DCO) synth, but very capable of some really nice bass sounds, leads, etc., and not that expensive.
The behringer sounds great. I don’t understand the hate. Allow it! 😂 You can spend a small fortune on an original with all the retuning, servicing and maintenance or get a clone that sounds great.
Every sh 101 sounds slightly different too so I would say its more than passable. I used to really dislike Behringer but the amount of affordable high quality synths they are releasing lately is really insane. Even there 50 dollar mini synths have great filters and sound fantastic
