Thank you so much! I made my miss poles 2 weeks ago your way. The experimental moss poles from a few weeks ago were ugly and hard to water. Your way was so much easier and prettier! 😍
I did make my very first moss pole yesterday while watching this video. Tried a different kind of moss pole last year and after I tried and failed (I kinda forgot to keep it moist, as winter/heating season started), I wasn't really up for another wet/moist moss pole. Had to cut back the scindapsus and she is still on her way of recovery. But after I watched, I guess, every video, I thought I'll give it another try. So I went to the hardware store (Bauhaus in Germany) and got myself some coated wire (5meters long, 50cm high, the cheapest one I could find) and ordered some (quality) moss. And today I potted up a monstera adansonii with the moss pole (with chunky substrate). My second one which I saved from a friend last year (was barely a stem cutting, sitting on the balcony to die). My first one is already to tall/big for a shorter pole. I have a few plants for this kind of moss pole but as the adansonii is a) one of my favourite plants and b) really easy to take care of ,in my experience, my decision was made. And now I will wait and keep the moss moist for that roots to grow. :) It's gonna be amazing. I have no doubt. :D Thanks for the videos and for giving me "the push" to try again. Because your plants look amazing and I like the approach of chop and extent and using the vertical space given in an apartment. Have a great day, everyone :)
This Q&A was very helpful!! I don’t have enough time in the day to even *think* of looking on Instagram so *thank you* for mentioning on your UA-cam channel the questions you have gotten on Instagram. Ever since I saw your channel pop up on my UA-cam feed, I have been fascinated with your concept and use of the moss pole. That the moss pole is an extension of the growing medium rather than simply being a structural support is, in my mind, an “out of the box” unusual and creative concept. Because many of us have limited floor space, I think the idea of focusing on *controlled* vertical plant growth is very relevant. I think that even though you’ve only been avidly gardening indoors for about 2-3 years, the results you have had with your plants is remarkable!! Although I am big on reading theory, I like your philosophy of speaking only from your experiences. I look forward to your future posts and have subscribed to your channel.
We getting closer to spring in Australia and I am so ready to make moss poles and repot my plants 🇦🇺❤️ awesome video again and hats off for your consistency and to share your growing experience with a smile 😁
I have a monstera that's grown mature (and too tall) in a large pot full of soil with one of those ready made horrible "moss" poles that do nothing. The new leaves are getting smaller and smaller and I don't like how it's growing. How can I begin to transfer it to a moss pole? Do I chop it and stick it back in the soil with a new proper moss pole? Or will it die if it has no roots in the soil? Can I even propagate it when it's that large?
I did read up on Growth Technology nutrients. I believe any foliage focussed non-circulating Hydroponic nutrients would be a great replacement in other countries.
I am loving this video! As you know, I am in the process of making my own moss poles for my monstera for the first time. I have decided to use the same materials as you have here with a bamboo pole for strength pushed through the middle of it. My question is, how packed should my mesh be with moss to be effective? Also, if you EVER plan to share some of your constellation starts, PLEASE let me know!!!!Ultimate dream!!!
Fantastic Q&A video - really appreciate all your experiences. Amazed how small the pot size are with such large leaves. Liked your videos and subscribed!
I love my upgraded poles thanks to your tutorial! I got the wire from Bunnings and the moss from mitre 10 here in New Zealand our Bunnings don't seem to have the moss 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
What size are the water bottles that you use when watering moss poles? Do you use any natural fertilizer? Do you add liquid fertilizer every single time you water?
I don't have the room or natural light for my plants to be on poles, so they're in a corner and I hung jute string up on the walls and tie the vines to that. They seem to be really enjoying where they're at
I have large plants in pots outside that can fall in high winds. To help stop the problem, I sit the pot with the plant in a second pot, which I've placed bricks in to anchor. I'm thinking that a large indoor plant could be treated the same.
That’s mainly depending in the size of the root system, not the plant itself. I usually wait for secondary roots. Check out my very first video where I pot up a small monstera on a moss pole for the first time :)
I love, love, your show …… I live in Texas, I can’t find the chunky bark you use, I can find the other items needed. But your bark looks so healthy sounds good when you add to your tub.. My second question where do you get your sphagnum moss. Ours has twigs and other unwanted items.. dirty.. also in Small bags.. Ty very much..
Not all Bunnings stock the same mesh as yours. My local one used to but have changed to another type, which isn’t as good. I bought some in the hope I could make it work, but the squares are 50 x 50, so they’re too wide. And the wire isn’t strong enough, it feels like it could topple over. I’m going to source the wire from another supplier. This isn’t an uncommon thing to experience when living regionally in Australia. Many big box stores don’t supply the same products across the nation
Hey Jan - love all your videos! I was wondering how the process of putting water-rooted cuttings onto a moss pole with airoid mix goes usually? Thanks for all the helpful information!
To Sydney plant guy love your videos I’m binge watching all of them 😂. Anyone in the USA found the clear pots I found the repotme ones but they don’t seem to be the right height to support the pole. If anyone has found them I would appreciate it thank you 😊.
Hi Jan, can you bury existing roots in to a moss pole? As in, to move a crawler to vertical? My aeroid rooted horizontally in to the soil, and I wanted to make him climb. Thank you 😊
I would not recommend growing a crawler vertically. If you want to get the best out of your plants grow them in line with their natural growth pattern :)
@@sydneyplantguy oh thank you so much for the reply Jan! Really appreciate it. This plant is actually a climber, sorry. He rooted horizontally kind of by accident, as I didn't give him a pole soon enough 😕 It is a raphidora decursiva.
I'm not new to plants (I have probably around 20)but I'm new to philodendron. I really wanted a verrucosum after seeing yours, but after I heard from multiple people that it's a nightmare, I decided to not get one just yet. I really like Gloriosum and Melanochrysum. Which one do you recomand and what advice do you have? Thanks in advance.
Hi! Just a quick question-when you fertilize through your moss poles, do you put the fertilizer into the bottle that you then upturn into the moss pole? Thank you!! You’re definitely my favorite plantuberrrr
@@sydneyplantguy awesome. But is it easy to propagate and take out the roots in the moss pole? I'm from the Philippines. We use coco poles here more often. Planning to shift to moss poles.
@@sydneyplantguy great! Watched a lot of your videos. Big help, dude! Love your alocasias too. How do you grow them well in your apartment? I'm having a hard time with alocasias and syngoniums in my condominium.
Thank you so much for all your content!! I'm a relatively new plant lover, also living in Sydney and it's nice because often people I follow live elsewhere with different weather conditions and products available. I recently got a verrucosum and you convinced me to make a moss pole with exactly the same moss/coated wire etc. However I didn't leave it out to dry because I only made one to put my verrucosum on just a couple of days later. A couple of days after setting my verrucosum on it I noticed lots of fine white hairs with tiny black dots at the end growing out of the moss pole (I would attatch an image but I don't think I can here). I know you said you don't have personal experience with fungal growths on your poles but have you ever seen anything like that happen? I have tried leaving it next to an open sliding door inside and outside in the sun as much as possible hoping it would naturally kill any spores and help dry out the moss but ofcourse I am also worried about my new verrucosum trying to start rooting to the pole needing moisture... Not sure if I need to try an antifungal spray/take more drastic measures? What would you do? If you have any suggestions at all I would greatly appreciate it! (And won't hold it against you if they don't work ofc 😊). TIA!
Thank you :) i’d definitely try an anti fungal spray, that should kill the mould & then going forward just ensure there is sufficient airflow so it won’t come back :)
@@sydneyplantguy thank you so much for responding, much appreciated!I realised the other day I should have posted in your Q&A 🤦🏻♀️! Are there any antifungal sprays you would reccomend or have you heard of any that will be safe for the plant too? (I know next to nothing about this 😅). Thinking about trying hydrogen peroxide first because I have used it before in soil but don't know if it will be strong enough to keep the fungus at bay... At the moment my pole is dry and the fungus has stopped growing but I suspect the spores are not dead and the fungus will return when I dampen the pole again...
@@normalguy7898 i let it dry out in the sun then tried spraying with hydrogen peroxide and then dampening the pole just around the areas I want the aerial roots to grow (so it's not all too damp). That seemed to be okay but I ran out of hydrogen peroxide and found eco fungacide spray from bunnings so have since sprayed that on any parts that look like maybe mould and it seems to have kept it at bay? I have also been making an effort to keep it ventilated by a sliding door which has probably helped... I am about to go away though so we will see how it goes without my helicopter parenting 😅🤣 ... good luck with yours!!
You should open a website selling all of the equipment for creating the moss poles/aroid mix and fertilizers, that will ship globaly. That way all of your viewers will be able to use the exact same stuff as you, and order with trust and safety, knowing it's your website.
I like your thinking, thanks :) but I think u’re underestimating international shipping costs & import/export licenses, especally when we’re talking about luquid nutrients or natural materials like bark etc. people don’t need to use the exact products I use. There’s many ways to have success and shipping huge & heavy items like aroid mix across the world instead of encouraging people to go to their local nursery/garden centre sounds like a horrible idea to be honest. I rather stick to prividing people with guiding principles so they can take them and apply them to their own journey using the products available locally :)!
I desperately need your help plant man! I’ve had some climbers on spag moss poles but recently noticed a ton of freckle sized black and white mites climbing up and down my poles and around my pots. They are only found on my pole plants, so I assume it’s from them. Have you ever dealt with these before? And if so what did you do? Thanks Jan the plant man!
Hey, I have never experienced that so can't speak from experience. Suppose best would be to try and identify what mites they are first & then research treatment methods.
Hi ,Watching for second time , you dampen your moss before u start your moss poles ?. I missed that , would settle my moss a bit I learn something every time I do a rewatch
Hey Body! Your video is fill with so much valuable information regarding plant caring. Just wanderning will any liquid fertilizer good for plant? Are those fertilizer available on Amazon? I want to order online that you are using. Thankyou so much for response! Oh! one problem, there is lot of earthworms and tiny millipides in my flower pots what should I do, I tried many methods but still comes up. 😥😥
Hi Jan. First thing first, I spent few hours to make 8 moss pole yesterday after work and woke up with back pain today. For that I'm little bit angry at you😁. The question is about fertiliser. Since I live in germany, it is quite difficult to get the products you have. So I'm looking for alternatives, but I'm little bit confused as you mentioned foliage focus is "actually not fertiliser but nutirents" How can I tell that which fertiliser is fit for the moss pole? I already own 2 liquid fertiliser. Both are for aroids. one is 'organic' one, which is dark brown color and it's quite thick (of course it supposed to be mixed with water anyway but still.) and the other one is much lighter and transperent almost like water with little greenish hue. The third option i was thinking is using slow realising fertilising sticks (I have one from Substral) stab into the moss pole one or two.. I'm very willing to get something else if you says otherwise, but I need some help here. Anyway thank you so much for sharing your tips always, cheers!
@@sydneyplantguy hey just to be sure, you mean you use the nutrients (2 black bottle in the clip) to fertilise for soil, pole and also spray to the leaves ?
With all your plants looking so mature: Did you get them to produce Inflorescences already? I'm currently in the process of trying to hand-pollinate my Plowmanii and tbh it's one of the most exciting things since I got into the hobby.
Hello i just wanna ask how do you install your moss pole in your pot? Im just curious how come the pot is not falling while you are holding the pole and shaking them.. thanks in advance...
Hi, I saw your channel and decided go make a moss pole. I've put it with my monstera adansonii. A week later I've watered the moss as it seemed dry. Another week later... the moss was covered in MOLD! What do I do? I've used sphagnum moss. I was wondering why the leaves are getting yellow, so I assume its due to mold? How do I save my monstera now?
If your moss grows mould is would usually be because the moss was stored incorrectly by whoever produces/packages it. You can try and anti-fungal spray & make sure there is airflow :)
I wonder: I have found a single black (adult) Thrips on my Thai Constellation. Where there is one there is more I guess. I have been using beneficial mites for the last couple of weeks as I kinda had a "weird feeling" but couldn't pin it down really. In case I loose the battle and have to use sytemics for the first time and I am wondering: a) my plants are all in my bedroom. Did you put the plants back in your sleeping area after you sprayed them down with the Bayer systemic? I am not able to get exactly yours but of course there are other systemics around. and b) have you ever tried watering the poles with a solution of a systemic? Do you think that would work as they often recommend watering the plant because of the stage of thrips that is still in the soil. Well, problem for all those watering through the pole, not the pot 🫣 I'm not looking for a "do this not this" answer but rather if be happy to hear your thoughts on that. Thank you!
I wait for the leaves to dry before I put them back after I have treated them :) never had any pest issues within the pole/pot itself. I just treat the leaves
I actually don’t like the green grid look when I make my moss poles. Wish they made the metal in black or white instead. So I’ve been putting some moss on the front and using a chopstick to poke it into the mesh. Kind of the opposite of your haircut, but I like the appearance of an all-moss-only look from the front.
Going to release some predatory mites in hopes that it wil save my collection I remember that ur gloriosum had trouble and u had to cut it back mine was thriving until now ... damn u winter and pests :/
Anyone know of a good hardware cloth here in the US? Everything at my local shops is so rigid and hard to work with. Also I can't find anything semi-rigid that is taller than 2ft. I live in the Midwest. We have Fleet farm, menards, runnings, and your typical big box stores. Tips on clear pots are also always helpful :)
I live the grow vertical poles, they are super functional & stay moist for longer. I just prefer my regular poles aesthetically so I use grow.vertical only for smaller plants and propagations :)

In NZ, you can find the wire at Bunnings but you need to go to Mitre 10 for the sphagnum moss.
Thanks for sharing :)
@@sydneyplantguy also can get 14 and 20 cm clear pots from the Warehouse (in Auckland the Mt Roskill one has the most plant related stuff)
We getting closer to spring in Australia and I am so ready to make moss poles and repot my plants 🇦🇺❤️ awesome video again and hats off for your consistency and to share your growing experience with a smile 😁
Thank you :) yes!! Spring is coming! I’m so excited :)
As a hairdresser, I also question my abilities in relation to my craft. Like you, I must be doing something right if the outcome is good 😊
I have a monstera that's grown mature (and too tall) in a large pot full of soil with one of those ready made horrible "moss" poles that do nothing.
Good to know :)
Hard to quantify the density of the moss. I’d say 6/10 - dense enough to have enough moss in there but not too dense so there is still aeration
Great questions and well explained answers!
Love your integrity and transparency! Adelaide 👋🏼👋🏼
Thanks:)
Thank you for your video of how to make the moss pole. What kind of plastic on your moss pole (back part)?
I love your videos always!! You are my favorite plant youtube channel!!
Thanks :)
There are predatory mites available online in Europe and the States, ideal for when you have an infestation. Must exist in Australia as well.
Fantastic Q&A video - really appreciate all your experiences. Amazed how small the pot size are with such large leaves. Liked your videos and subscribed!
Thank you :)
I love my upgraded poles thanks to your tutorial!
I got the wire from Bunnings and the moss from mitre 10 here in New Zealand our Bunnings don't seem to have the moss 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
You are a natural teacher!
Thanks :)
Hey! Lowes or home depot has the wire , wire cutters , zip ties , and moss , the moss is super cheap also there!!
Of course amazon but I like to see the size of the wire mesh
Thanks for sharing :)
What size are the water bottles that you use when watering moss poles? Do you use any natural fertilizer? Do you add liquid fertilizer every single time you water?
Love your channel and topics, I started my moss pole journey because of you.
Wondering if you can talk about how you propagate your plants.
Thanks.
I propagate my plants by growing them on moss poles :) i’ll make a more in depth video eventually :)
Thank you :)
@@sydneyplantguy thanks!
I don't have the room or natural light for my plants to be on poles, so they're in a corner and I hung jute string up on the walls and tie the vines to that. They seem to be really enjoying where they're at
Sounds great :)
Really informative & helpful… like listening to a friend over coffee…. Please keep up the content
Thanks :)
U are great job for your garden and I love ❤️ your garden 💘 and videos 🤩🤩😅 God bless you ❤️
Thanks :)
Another great informative video. You make it look so easy.
Thanks :)
I have large plants in pots outside that can fall in high winds. To help stop the problem, I sit the pot with the plant in a second pot, which I've placed bricks in to anchor. I'm thinking that a large indoor plant could be treated the same.
Thanks for sharing , a lot of good information on your channel , I’m learning a lot. ❤️ 🙏
Cheers :)
I really like your sharing, very clear and practical !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks :)
you are an inspiration, another great video, very helpful.
Thank you :)
I have trouble finding where to buy moss in my location. Do you think i could just gather moss from forest? Or maybe use some kind of substitute?
great Video! lokks like vertical planting is a game changer? What kind of grid is it ? is thit a metal fence ?
It’s a coated metal wire, 12mm gridn
Is there a certain size you wait for the plant to get before you add a moss pole? Thanks for the great videos.
That’s mainly depending in the size of the root system, not the plant itself. I usually wait for secondary roots. Check out my very first video where I pot up a small monstera on a moss pole for the first time :)
@@sydneyplantguy I’ve watched them all but that one it’s been a while. Thanks!
Hey, it’s from bunnings :)
when it out grows the poll do you cut off the baby leafs and just plant it into a new pot with more mature leafs?
Oh wow this is fantastic! Thank you
Morning I am loving this video as u know. Also I like to know where I can get the plastic sheet for back of the moss pole ? Thanks so much
I get it from a company called Grow Vertical
How do you keep your plants from pest? So you do foliage spray?
Hey :) i have a video where I pot up my monstera subpinnata on a moss pole for the first time :)
To Sydney plant guy love your videos I’m binge watching all of them 😂.
Anyone in the USA found the clear pots I found the repotme ones but they don’t seem to be the right height to support the pole. If anyone has found them I would appreciate it thank you 😊.
Love the video try honey diluted on all your plants
An easy and pretty climbing philodendron is the brasil. Easy to prop too!
Very true :)
I’d recommend starting with a glorious or splendid :)
Splendid or majestic definitely another option for you, if you want "half verrucosum" in your collection without the nightmare.
Hi! Just a quick question-when you fertilize through your moss poles, do you put the fertilizer into the bottle that you then upturn into the moss pole? Thank you!! You’re definitely my favorite plantuberrrr
Thanks :) that’s exactly what I do :)
@@sydneyplantguy you’re the bestttt
Another great video! Question. Can I use coco fiber instead of moss? Will it have the same benefit? Thanks in advance.
Coco fibre (assuming you are ferrimg to coir) doesn’t have much water retention capacity so it won’t. You can try coco chips instead :)
@@tivysiripanich2238 Hey Tivy, how did you go? I have exactly the same issue as you. What are you going to do? Did you find any anti fungal spray?
@@tivysiripanich2238 thanks for that, will try the same.
Hi, because of your videos I bought a few plants, and I'm going to make moss poles. I have a question, how big are your pots?
10,14,20 & 25 cms
Hi ,Watching for second time , you dampen your moss before u start your moss poles ?. I missed that , would settle my moss a bit
I learn something every time I do a rewatch
Yes I do :) makes it easier to assess how much moss is needed :)
In USA, Home Depot has everything!
Not all fertilisers are the same. You want to make sure the fertiliser has all the nutrients a plant needs :)
Hi Jan. First thing first, I spent few hours to make 8 moss pole yesterday after work and woke up with back pain today. For that I'm little bit angry at you😁.
The question is about fertiliser. Since I live in germany, it is quite difficult to get the products you have. So I'm looking for alternatives, but I'm little bit confused as you mentioned foliage focus is "actually not fertiliser but nutirents"
How can I tell that which fertiliser is fit for the moss pole?
I already own 2 liquid fertiliser. Both are for aroids. one is 'organic' one, which is dark brown color and it's quite thick (of course it supposed to be mixed with water anyway but still.) and the other one is much lighter and transperent almost like water with little greenish hue.
The third option i was thinking is using slow realising fertilising sticks (I have one from Substral) stab into the moss pole one or two..
I'm very willing to get something else if you says otherwise, but I need some help here.
Anyway thank you so much for sharing your tips always, cheers!
I’d give it a try and see if it works. Trial and error is key. Foliage focus is a liquid mineral plant nutrient rather than an organic fertiliser
Thanks for sharing, may I ask do you spray / mist the water mixed with nutrients (folia fertiliser) for the leaves?
I don't use a foliar fertiliser, I fertilise the leaves :)
@@sydneyplantguy hey just to be sure, you mean you use the nutrients (2 black bottle in the clip) to fertilise for soil, pole and also spray to the leaves ?
Now my weekend is complete 💚
Thanks :)
Thanks for a very informative video. What’s your opinion on using moss poles with self watering pots?
The self watering pot won’t keep the moss pole moist though. In general I don’t really use self-watering. That’s my job!! :P
Thank you ! I thought the same thing but wanted confirmation from you as your plants are so lush and you’re very successful with your plants.
How do we stabilize the moss pole… mine wants to tip forward with the plant.. 😔
With all your plants looking so mature: Did you get them to produce Inflorescences already? I'm currently in the process of trying to hand-pollinate my Plowmanii and tbh it's one of the most exciting things since I got into the hobby.
Not really. I believe i chop them too frequently for them to flower :)
Hi. When potting up a new cutting (just bought) and introducing it to a sphagnum moss pole, what size pot do you use please?

Hello i just wanna ask how do you install your moss pole in your pot? Im just curious how come the pot is not falling while you are holding the pole and shaking them.. thanks in advance...
I just pot it up :) the roots hold it all together
Hi, I saw your channel and decided go make a moss pole. I've put it with my monstera adansonii. A week later I've watered the moss as it seemed dry. Another week later... the moss was covered in MOLD! What do I do? I've used sphagnum moss. I was wondering why the leaves are getting yellow, so I assume its due to mold? How do I save my monstera now?
If your moss grows mould is would usually be because the moss was stored incorrectly by whoever produces/packages it. You can try and anti-fungal spray & make sure there is airflow :)
Can you use a mosspole for plats without soil? Like plant in Pon or Leca? I mean hydroponic plants I guess?
Yes:)
Thank you with greetings form Germany
Thank you for this vidéo 💚🇫🇷🙏
I wonder: I have found a single black (adult) Thrips on my Thai Constellation. Where there is one there is more I guess. I have been using beneficial mites for the last couple of weeks as I kinda had a "weird feeling" but couldn't pin it down really. In case I loose the battle and have to use sytemics for the first time and I am wondering:
a) my plants are all in my bedroom. Did you put the plants back in your sleeping area after you sprayed them down with the Bayer systemic? I am not able to get exactly yours but of course there are other systemics around.
and
b) have you ever tried watering the poles with a solution of a systemic? Do you think that would work as they often recommend watering the plant because of the stage of thrips that is still in the soil. Well, problem for all those watering through the pole, not the pot 🫣
I'm not looking for a "do this not this" answer but rather if be happy to hear your thoughts on that.
Ideally the plant gets so large and lush you don’t see the pole at all :)
I was able to find all these products at Home Depot if you’re in the USA
Thanks for sharing :)
Going to release some predatory mites in hopes that it wil save my collection I remember that ur gloriosum had trouble and u had to cut it back mine was thriving until now ... damn u winter and pests :/
I'm in Canada 🇨🇦 Goy my coated metal mesh and my Sphagnum moss Amazon Canada.
I notice your pots are not large...also do you use grow lights..if so what type..
Do you insert the root inside the moss? How long does the root take to attach to the pole?
No the plant grows roots into the moss pole itself. How long that takes really depends on the plant and its conditions
I had to buy from Amazon because my Lowe's doesn't have the wire mesh or sphagnum moss.
Elizabeth, could you share a link please??
Do you have views on whether the home made moss poles are better than the grow vertical prop sticks? Or are they by and large the same?
I have a mix pack of the fatty style ones and am aiming to get the monster leaves like you get.
I live the grow vertical poles, they are super functional & stay moist for longer. I just prefer my regular poles aesthetically so I use grow.vertical only for smaller plants and propagations :)
@@sydneyplantguy thanks so much for the reply
The poles you made in this video, are they still the same size as another video you made…ie 15squares?
Yes :)
