Please take care to remind people of your point (which I find to be a good one) that is likely overlook because each geographical region has its own climate challenges and even its own soil needs. The matter of keeping houseplants is rather unnatural, too. For it is us, humans, who bring them into our inorganic spaces. Again, great point but it also could have its nuances if someone offers broad recommendations that are not applicable to a specific region. The backlash can be brutal. Therein may lye the reluctance of some who do not acknowledge our interest from a global perspective.

@@sab_8321 seemed pretty straight forward to me, gentler means less potent if you need an example think of alcohol, hard liquor is much stronger where as a beer is going to be “gentler”. If you’re drinking hard liquor you’ll need less to feel intoxicated than you would if you were drinking beer. If you need an explanation as to why it comes down to ingredients and amount of ingredients. More is stronger, less is gentler.

I have one more question going off of the waiting to fertilize after buying a plant. Would I still want to wait said amount of time if I repotted and removed a lot of the soil? I think if you're removing a lot of the soil, I would still wait at least a couple weeks. If you're transplanting it, I would actually suggest more of a soil activator or something like biotone to help with the shock of transplant.
i agree, that is why i do not repot unless its absolutely necessary and i do not, touch the roots, i simply set them down in new soil gently , and pack with new soil, that helps as well to prevent shock
Thank you so much for this. I just fertilised my little indoor oasis for the first time yesterday using an organic fertiliser (4, 1.5, 4). I gave it to my Monsteras, palm, rubber tree and ficus as well. I really want to do this right, as all my plants gave me so much love and new growth this spring.
Agreed! Including, the organic amendment of up-cycling fish aquarium water or Aquaponics. I have a 90 gallon aquarium and while my Chinese Evergreens love to be watered with that water, fungus gnats love that rich organic waste-water, too. Also, that water isn’t meant for plants like palms or cacti, as this will certainly facilitate root-rot! Love the channel, Summer💕

The Masterclass is an investment. You just have to figure out whether it makes sense for you. But I think it's important to invest in yourself and other people whom you support. I even look at these videos as investment. I doubt I or the people who are generous enough to help with these videos will ever recoup financially from the resources that are put in, but there are other solid benefits that are had. At the very least, however, you get all this free information here. :)

I've seen tons of these videos and keep hearing about plant fertilizers. I had to do a lot of searching before I learned that plant food is a fertilizer. I don't know why the labels don't state this. "Plant Food Fertilizer is much less confusing. I actually thought I needed two different products, Plant Food and Plant Fertilizer.
Hello and thank you for the v detailed walkthrough on fertilizing. I have a few questions and was wondering if you have any experience with the below: 1) usage used tea leaves or water soaked in used tea leaves (I presume these are considered amendments as well) - are they also “surefire” ways to get bugs as you mentioned? Because I’m also aware of tea being a good repellent for certain bugs. 2) watering plants with water used to wash rice - some people in the East/Asia use that as an amendment that provide a natural boost as well. Wondering if you have experience that this also affects bug presence I guess the general question would be plant based vs animal source amendments - any pros and cons? Thank you!! Bel

The pots range from a small leaf alone, a single stem with a couple leaves to my big pots four or five inches in diameter. 1: some stems are turning black. Leaves curling up and bending over. Horizontal brown striations, and cut marks that look like a bug is chewing on them. 2: some leaves have small circular colorations on the leaves. Also, the backs of some leaves have silvery coloring. Is this all from needing fertilizer? Bad water? Bad timing- wrong time of year? I’ve tried to watch as many videos from you as I can, thanks! Of all the you tubers giving advice on house plant i have found by far the most useful. Its one thing to be told "do this, do that" but you take the trouble to explain why. Have you tried beneficial nematodes for fungus gnats? I just did a green lacewing release as per your recommendation yesterday and I’m so excited to have some support against the aphid war. I have been using the mosquito bits for a year with not super great control of the fungus gnats, I’ve read great things about the nematodes and will apply them in a couple days.
Steinernema Feltiae are the type of Nematodes for anyone who wants to do this. Make sure you buy ones that are alive and not dead. Use a microscope to check on arrival or a clip on phone lens to zoom right in.

Having a 1 gallon jug of water is a great idea. I was struggling thinking how am I going to measure such a small amount to fit in the squirt bottle I use for my Lithops and Split Rocks. I dunk all my air plants into my 90 gallon, softwater aquarium. It has nutrients from the light aquatic fertilizer I use once in awhile for my aquatic plants, and also naturally occurring nutrients in the chlorine-free water.
This video was beyond helpful. I have two parlor palms and one of them was looking quite dreary, obviously in need of fertilizer, but for the life of me was overwhelmed at the nursery because there were so many! Thank you for this exceptional video!
Brandon, do you just add that to the water, or do you sprinkle it on the surface of the soil and work it in? I’ve heard fish emulsion is wonderful, as are worm castings, but have never tried either one.

It's really about whether you want to build up soil microorganisms or not. Sure there can be other differentiations too but haven't seen anything in the literature myself
Hi Summer. I have grown plants for a long time and I just recently started watching your videos. I find them very knowledgeable, captivating and I like watching them and relating them to my experience. There are always new things to learn. I would like to share some knowledge. This is an easy way for me to remember what each of the three N-P-K nutrients do for plants. Plants are basically divided into three sections. 1. Leaves. 2. Branches, Trunks and Flowers. 3. Roots; Even more basically, Tops, Middles and Bottoms. Those three sections are related to the N-P-K sequence respectively. Tops = N (Nitrogen), Middles = P (Potassium) and Bottoms = K (Phosphorus). So for example, to boost flowering, use higher P; for roots use higher K and leaves use higher N. Top-Middle-Bottom... it's an easy way to remember what the N-P-K is referencing.
I would also like to add some thoughts on fertilizing schedules. At 20:41 you are talking about "Feed Every Time You Water" label on the bottle of a 10-10-10 concentration liquid fertilizer. You say it is presumptuous. I believe that it would actually be dependent on the manufacturers "Directions for Use". For example, if the directions stated to place one drop of fertilizer per one quart of water every time the plants are watered then that might be appropriate, as opposed to the directions that would say to use four drops per quart of water once a month. Fertilize every waitering, use a higher dilution rate, watering every month, use a lower dilution rate. I feel that there is not " any more" fertilizer actually being used, but rather fertilizing every watering concept is employing a more balanced and consistent application of fertilization over a period of time by using less fertilizer more often.

I think here in Australia we don't have the same system with the three numbers/ratio on the front of the fertilizer packaging. I could be wrong, but I never see it. It would be so good if we had clearer information on our packaging. Thanks for this helpful information as always Summer, I really appreciate being able to learn from you! Also once and for all I would like to know do fungas gnats harm the plants or not!!?! So many different opinions on this!
I wish I had seen this video a few months earlier, would have dispelled so much anxiety towards fertilizers and would have solved much of the confusion. I currently have a mix of organic and mineral/syntheic fertilizers, once I use them all up, I will know what kind of fertilizer to get going forward. I suppose it's a good chance too see how well my plants respond to the different types of fertilizers as well

Alex Gonzales I think it will stink up the place and also she said it attracts fungus gnats… I have the same fear as you do! I hear or sea kelp is a good one that doesn’t smell too much.
Hi Summer, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I grow orchids and as you may know they require a lot of especial care. I am currently using an 3-1-5 organic fertiliser. I am a little concerned about the media breaking down faster by using an organic fertiliser, but my husband is really terrified of chemicals and for that reason he doesn't like synthesised fertilisers. I just started taking care of houseplants and I no longer have planted tanks. and I have some planted tank fertilizers left, N-P-K, iron and a seachem flourish in separate bottles. I really don't want to waste them and was wondering if I can use them for my houseplants and how much to use.

If you notice your plants slowing down during your cold season, then I would take cue from your plants and slow down or eliminate fertilizing. If you're on the equator, well then, that's another subject altogether. Remember there are microclimates in lots of places too!
Summer Rayne Oakes I think for us - and this is only from looking at things the last few years - winter is a growing period while summer everything stands still. We have hot dry summers here so nothing really grows; everything is just trying to survive. You’re right, though - you always need to monitor your plants to see how they perform where you live.
I am using crushed (powdered) egg shells, but I have read from some plant specialists that it is completely useless ? at least it is a good way to get rid of them and it doesn't hurt !
I've been using organic fertilizer and as my plant collection has grown I feel like I'm fertilizing and buying it constantly because the bottles are so small. Think I'll try the Jacks synthetic. Thank you for this 🌱
Within reason you can use one type of fertilizer for everything if you adjust the amount of fertilizer to water. For example if I have 10-10-10 fertilizer for a teaspoon I can make that function as 5-5-5 by cutting the amount of fertilizer I add to the water.

2: some leaves have small circular colorations on the leaves. Also, the backs of some leaves have silvery coloring.
Is this all from needing fertilizer? Bad water? Bad timing- wrong time of year?

Of all the you tubers giving advice on house plant i have found by far the most useful. Its one thing to be told "do this, do that" but you take the trouble to explain why. A little knowledge goes a long way. Instructions sink in and stay with some understanding of the principles behind them. So thank you and please keep doing more 🙏🪴🌱

Have you tried beneficial nematodes for fungus gnats? I just did a green lacewing release as per your recommendation yesterday and I’m so excited to have some support against the aphid war. I have been using the mosquito bits for a year with not super great control of the fungus gnats, I’ve read great things about the nematodes and will apply them in a couple days.
I used beneficial nematodes to control fungus gnats. It seems to work for me. (:
Steinernema Feltiae are the type of Nematodes for anyone who wants to do this. Make sure you buy ones that are alive and not dead. Use a microscope to check on arrival or a clip on phone lens to zoom right in.

Having a 1 gallon jug of water is a great idea. I was struggling thinking how am I going to measure such a small amount to fit in the squirt bottle I use for my Lithops and Split Rocks. My plants love the water I save from doing water changes on my planted betta fish tank!
I dunk all my air plants into my 90 gallon, softwater aquarium. It has nutrients from the light aquatic fertilizer I use once in awhile for my aquatic plants, and also naturally occurring nutrients in the chlorine-free water.
I do the same from my high tech tank.

It's really about whether you want to build up soil microorganisms or not. Sure there can be other differentiations too but haven't seen anything in the literature myself
Hi Summer. I have grown plants for a long time and I just recently started watching your videos. I find them very knowledgeable, captivating and I like watching them and relating them to my experience. There are always new things to learn. I would like to share some knowledge. This is an easy way for me to remember what each of the three N-P-K nutrients do for plants. Plants are basically divided into three sections. 1. Leaves. 2. Branches, Trunks and Flowers. 3. Roots; Even more basically, Tops, Middles and Bottoms. Those three sections are related to the N-P-K sequence respectively. Tops = N (Nitrogen), Middles = P (Potassium) and Bottoms = K (Phosphorus). So for example, to boost flowering, use higher P; for roots use higher K and leaves use higher N. Top-Middle-Bottom... it's an easy way to remember what the N-P-K is referencing.
I would also like to add some thoughts on fertilizing schedules. At 20:41 you are talking about "Feed Every Time You Water" label on the bottle of a 10-10-10 concentration liquid fertilizer. You say it is presumptuous. I believe that it would actually be dependent on the manufacturers "Directions for Use". For example, if the directions stated to place one drop of fertilizer per one quart of water every time the plants are watered then that might be appropriate, as opposed to the directions that would say to use four drops per quart of water once a month. Fertilize every waitering, use a higher dilution rate, watering every month, use a lower dilution rate.
I feel that there is not " any more" fertilizer actually being used, but rather fertilizing every watering concept is employing a more balanced and consistent application of fertilization over a period of time by using less fertilizer more often.

I think here in Australia we don't have the same system with the three numbers/ratio on the front of the fertilizer packaging. I could be wrong, but I never see it. It would be so good if we had clearer information on our packaging. Thanks for this helpful information as always Summer, I really appreciate being able to learn from you! I wish I had seen this video a few months earlier, would have dispelled so much anxiety towards fertilizers and would have solved much of the confusion.
I currently have a mix of organic and mineral/syntheic fertilizers, once I use them all up, I will know what kind of fertilizer to get going forward. I suppose it's a good chance too see how well my plants respond to the different types of fertilizers as well

I’m wondering if an organic fertilizer will stink up my apartment? I have a lot of plants in a fairly small place and I’m afraid that if I fertilize all of them organically it will start to smell bad. Thanks for all the great info, I love to watch all your videos!
Alex Gonzales I think it will stink up the place and also she said it attracts fungus gnats… I have the same fear as you do! I hear or sea kelp is a good one that doesn’t smell too much.
Hi Summer, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I grow orchids and as you may know they require a lot of especial care. I am currently using an 3-1-5 organic fertiliser. I am a little concerned about the media breaking down faster by using an organic fertiliser, but my husband is really terrified of chemicals and for that reason he doesn't like synthesised fertilisers. Any advice or insights? Love your content so much!

I just started taking care of houseplants and I no longer have planted tanks. and I have some planted tank fertilizers left, N-P-K, iron and a seachem flourish in separate bottles. I really don't want to waste them and was wondering if I can use them for my houseplants and how much to use.

If you notice your plants slowing down during your cold season, then I would take cue from your plants and slow down or eliminate fertilizing. If you're on the equator, well then, that's another subject altogether. Remember there are microclimates in lots of places too!
Summer Rayne Oakes I think for us - and this is only from looking at things the last few years - winter is a growing period while summer everything stands still. We have hot dry summers here so nothing really grows; everything is just trying to survive. You’re right, though - you always need to monitor your plants to see how they perform where you live.

I am using crushed (powdered) egg shells, but I have read from some plant specialists that it is completely useless ? at least it is a good way to get rid of them and it doesn't hurt !
I've been using organic fertilizer and as my plant collection has grown I feel like I'm fertilizing and buying it constantly because the bottles are so small. Think I'll try the Jacks synthetic. Thank you for this 🌱
Within reason you can use one type of fertilizer for everything if you adjust the amount of fertilizer to water. For example if I have 10-10-10 fertilizer for a teaspoon I can make that function as 5-5-5 by cutting the amount of fertilizer I add to the water.
