If my adult children in their thirties cannot come to visit to me at any time for any reason, that is a deal killer for me.

That makes total sense. But I have found that since moving to FL, I have more visitors than ever.

How frequently does the ambulance come to the facility?
Don't plan on going out to breakfast early with a group of friends who also live there, as many have morning rituals they must pass through, like constipation.
Lots of cliques too. I felt like I was back in Jr High. Also, single men are way outnumbered by woman often times, especially in condo or high rise places. Lots of folk looking to hook up and find that special person to care for them and more.
Stay away from the 62 and older HUD facilities that also mix in the under 62 disabled. Lots of vice usually, mental issues , walkers and wheelchairs, marijuana usage and bed bugs. And this was in a bldg labeled independent living senior housing. They may be affordable but there's trade-offs.
Just remember the majority of residents in these 55 and older places are in some status of declining health. The 55 year olds may not be but the mid 60s and up usually have a pill section on the kitchen counter. Some facilities provide forms to place on your refrigerator to put all your meds on so the ambulance medics know what you're taking. There are 62 and older facilities. Those are best for lower income seniors.
    Just keeping it real.
The more near to each other the units are imo, the more everybody is in your business. Many of these people have nothing better to do than watch their neighbors. Gladys Kravitz types everywhere these days.
I live in a co-op now that is mixed, no age restriction. We still have a large number of seniors and many are in advancing stages of poor health. You may need to be real choosy who you make friends with as many of the residents may be very needy. My advice is to stay in your own home or downsized home as long as possible. There's lots of fun older people out there but places that condense the older, especially in high density facilities, you're going to find there's lots of misery no matter how glamourous the brochure looks.

Agree 100%. Don't move into a death camp where you are watched by your neighbors constantly. Yes a death camp.

The 55+ community I lived in was lovely for the first 2 years. Eventually it went from elderly to newly 55 and I was thrilled with the new young active residents. UNTIL THEY ALL HAD THEIR DAMN LOUD KIDS OVER ALL THE TIME. I moved and would never ever consider another clique and nosey community like this again. I bought a high end condo where no one bothers you and has to know all your business.

    Great video, Lisa! Very informative!👍
Maybe you can also discuss the pros-and-cons of moving to a unit in a 55+ rentals-only community, if you haven't done so already.
Because I happen to reside in one, and I'll be happy to give my objective take on the pros-and-cons of living in a fairly high-end senior rental community.
Also, I'm a professional writer in case you'd like me to crank out a few articles on this subject for your website or blog.
    (I charge no fee--if you are 55+.)😀

HOA's are a deal breaker for me. The hot muggy Florida weather is also a deal breaker. Also, the fact famous a-holes like Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump live in Florida and the far right politics of Florida are big negatives.

Nice video good information. Is it very common for adult children 18+age living in the Active Adult community with their parents?
I don't have anything against adult children. I have three adult children myself but they don't live with me, they have their own place.

I find the amount of amenities and amount of pools require such high fees for someone like my husband and I can't afford or need. Florida truly is becoming only for the wealthy. What ever happened to average pool or two small club house with a tennis court. Simple, simple.

My husband and I have briefly stayed in several 55+ communities that had RV sites when we have traveled across country in our RV or attended RV rallies that were hosted by a 55+ community. And some of our visits were during presidential election years. What concerns me the most about the 55+ communities I have visited is how their populations seemed to be overwhelmingly white and politically conservative. I really do not want to reside in a Trump community surrounded by people who for decades have disliked immigrants or anyone with a brown skin.

When one wants to sell or rent out, can s/he do at market prices? I heard from a friend that the home prices are subject to below-market prices, but she may be wrong...

We like our 55+ community. The cons are just 28 home (HOA is higher) and older residents than we expected. We are the only male gay couple but so far no issue. We love having three bedrooms on the main and one bedroom and bath upstairs. Everything is so close as far as restaurants and most doctors. We don’t really fixate on resale at 62 and 71. We do not care to leave a legacy to family.

@@LivingInSarasota living in a 28 home community we have no amenities. I can’t imagine what the HOA fees would be if we did. This few of homes just could not support amenities. But the homes are very nice in a desirable county in Georgia.

What if the 55+ family member dies and survived by a 40 yo husband or wife, can she/he still live there?

I would think that this determination would have to be at the discretion of each individual community.
