This would be the perfect toy line to reboot. With great articulation and the alternate head options. I would do whatever I can to back something like this.
When I was a kid, one of my neighbors got at least one new Silver Hawk toy almost every week. They were the only kids on the block with Silverhawks toys. At first, they're mom always bought the bad guys, because of availability. The Only good guys they had was the 2nd Quicksilver figure which had no wings, but had a mask and a Tallyhawk projectile. ( or was is steelheart? anyway, not my point) When they were able to get the good guys, (even the new characters) we all got disappointed. They were not as we expected. We all were looking forward to see the masks on the heads. We had no idea what the good guys looked because there were no toy commercials on TV here in the Philippines. What we ended up doing, is using the bad guys in other games fighting other toys. We made them Skeletors minions, monsters in D&D games. Aliens the that G.I.Joe and Cobra used to fight when they teamed up, Alien mutants the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fought, or even Ghosts for the Ghostbusters to bust. But we still used their actual names and abilities. This was the one toyline where we found villains are cooler than the main characters. :D Thanks for reading my comment. Cheers! :D
I had a few of these as a kid, but only vaguely remembered them and the show. I still have a sky shadow and Monstar, but the rest are long gone. Thanks for the upload!
I remember that same feeling of utter disappointment with the sole Silverhawks purchase I made in the 80's. I thought Quicksilver would be the coolest action figure ever, chose to buy him with my birthday money, and ripped him off the card barely out of the parking lot of Toys R Us in a city over an hour from home. In fact, in a decision that is almost unique in my entire memory as a toy collector, my teenage self made the decision to ask my parents to return to TRU just minutes later, and I got a refund.
Silverhawks was one of my favorite cartoons from the 80s - especially for the intro. I know some people weren't fans, but as a kid, this series was a joy for me. As much as I absolutely adored being a kid in the greatest decade for over commercialization, let's be honest, most of the toys were pretty bad (Transformers being the huge exception). Chinese manufacturing was discovered and toys were pumped out like bad sushi at an all-you-can-eat buffet. They knew kids would just beg for more
One of my most iconic toys during my childhood. And i do remember how rare to get it. I was so happy when i got the copper kid, and loved it when the episodes ends it always show some scenes involving the kidd and science
It was a long time ago, but if I remember the set right, there was no set order on which part went where. They were all made to be interchanged. They all had the same basic design,(remove legs, widen chests and fold up torso, fold out arms, place one head into other's chest to "stack", plug one set of legs into back of another, add last pair of legs for thighs and knees, add completed legs to completed upper body). But again, it's been awhile. :)
I was always a big fan of the Silverhawks cartoon as a kid and I still think it has one of the best theme songs of any cartoon in the 80s. I've thought about collecting some of these guys, but have just never pulled the trigger on any purchase. It is good to know what shortfalls I can expect if I ever do actually buy one. Thanks for the video!
Nice video. It was a discovering to me since I never owned one of those figures when I was a kid but always wished them. After watching this review I really don't think I wish those figures anymore.
I think the G.I,Joe action figures were some of the best toys ever. Never has there been a more flexible and pose able toy, that is sturdy enough to play with, as a G.I.Joe.
Here in South Africa we never got to see this cartoon - not that I can remember in any case. Lovely looking toys - but completely unaffordable on e-bay if you are looking for a carded figure. They go for absolute crazy prices. Great video of something that is new to me and which I never knew of till now, thanks!
I'll be sure to check it out. :) The thing I remember most was the pure weight of it. Being 90% metal, once you connected the 3 into 1, a little kid could barely lift it. It was hard to play with, because it would either break the plastic toys you were "fighting", someone would get hurt from swinging it around, or the process of transforming it would result in severe pinching of flesh between it's parts.lol
MAN, I thought it was just me. Every downside you called out happened to me, from scarcity to undue wear, to the quirks of the villains' actions. Loved the show, and I wanted to love the toys. Sigh.
I'm not sure about Dinosaucers, but the Voltron jet/car vehicles were sold here in the USA for a short time. I remember because one year my nephew got those at a local store, and I got the classic lion set(with pullback motors) and a (very heavy) metal 6-armed robot set that changed into 3 smaller robots. :)
I had it in 1984. When I attached the action figure at the bottom of Telehawk as intended. His leg was too worn out it couldn't hold up so he flew with his mighty hawk kite vehicle with his 1 leg down.
Wasn't there anything of the 80's and 90's that you liked? I remember gargoyles, Jem and the holograms, Dinosaucers. Call me old fashion or demented but if I can get the DVD I get them. I have the Gummy bears, Silverhawks, Thundercats, both the old and the new one. And I am 38. There are just days where nothing on TV is good, so I pop in a oldie DVD and sit back to have a good evening.
They didn’t roll the toys out until AFTER Christmas and I too was waiting a long time for them. When the FOX network started up there was a contest one could enter to win a set of Silverhawks figures and that was the first time I had ever seen them. They were not available in stores at that time. I was desperate for the Copper Kid and eventually I had the whole main set and several key villains. They are beautiful figures and basically impossible to find mint unless you get them moc.
I'm sorry dude, but you must have been the most unimaginative kid. I had most of these figures when i was a kid, and i had a blast with them. And cartoon was a favorite for my dad and I to watch.
The second line of figures a year later with the Ultrasonic Suits solved some of the problems, they were just inconsistent with the show. The wings were plastic but were more on their backs and not clipped to their wrists. They did have the masks though.
The Maurader reminds me of the "Darkside Destroyer" I had from Kenner as a kid, except it lit up and made noises. They both remind me of the T-cats vehicle Lynx O pilots, but I don't know if they ever made that into a toy.
I was disappointed that I was not able to collect these when I was a kid.Even if you were able to get these toys without the masks,be thankful because these have become a part of your childhood that no other kids in your time (like me) who luckily have these.
I never had any of these, but I used to cut out semicircle shapes for wings and scotchtape them onto my GI Joes and pretend they were Silverhawks. Judging by this video, mine were almost better anyway!
I have King Zarkon still and I found it small and dinky. However, the actual lions were amazing toys. I used to have a friend named Paul - way back in the day - who had Shogun Warriors toys. I remember they were quite amazing.
One thing I enjoy doing is watching a video like this and then looking at what those vintage figures cost on eBay today. For example a Graded 1987 Kenner SilverHawks Hotwing with Gyro Series 1 Action Figure would cost me over 1.1 thousand in my country's money posted to my door. I take great joy in paywalls like that as they keep me from entering the hobby of collecting vintage action figures. Just like the cost of collecting sealed games is prohibitive for me. Video game collecting is an expensive enough hobby as it is and I have to draw the line there otherwise my bank balance will go completely to shit .
Buzzsaw was a really fun figure. I had him, Monstar and Mumbo Jumbo before I dropped him off a hill and lost him early on. I used them more with He-man then as intended as their larger size fit well in Eternia. The Oange bird that came with (IIRC) the kid, I used as Zoar, bird form of Te Sorceress as seen in the cartoon. One thing I really like is Shadow Wing Batman from the Kenner's The dark Knight Collection. His mechanism was born out of the designs of this line. It worked SO MUCH more better for him as a play feature then as a line wide gimmick.
I disagree with one thing...the quality of the cartoon itself. This was one of the best cartoons on TV in the 80s. One thing that really set it apart for me was the solar system education/trivia segment with the copper kid at the end. For me as a child this cartoon was both oxygen AND candy!!! 😂 😂 😂 Still my favourite of all cartoon theme songs. Gives me chills everytime. I really wish a video game developer would create a retro style shooter or something from this series and add the educational aspect as well. Especially now that everything is online it could link back to a solar system database for endless space trivia and info. Even up-to-date info like upcoming eclipses, newly discovered stars or satellite imagery. Players could level up faster by answering questions and completing challenges. Also, a proper reboot of the series could be a possibility. Maybe feature the TransFormers in a few episodes.
I remember wanting these figures as well, and one of my friends had a couple of 'em...the metal finish was almost totally gone in about a month! I stuck to my GI Joes instead.
i went back and watched your old review of the Silverhawks and you were much more hard on them back then you were in this video, actually it was shockingly harder.
Part 1 of this seems to be missing? as well as the thundercats video you reference. Trying to watch Retroblasting front to back and I can't locate these videos.
My only exposure to the silverhawks was a coloring book I had when I was about six or seven. I guess I was just young enough to miss out on this one, if you want to call it that. I always thought that they looked like they had potential, but like many things from back then just didn't take off (that wasn't intentional).
Hey wat's the name of the transformer figure when you put the cats? I still have that transformer but in don't have the box any more! Only the foam? Men I never imagined I see it on a video in my life I have that transformer for Christmas when I was kid I'm 47!.
Do you ever plan to review toys from the early 1990's? I'd be interesting in hearing what you have to say about Kenner's other film-based toy lines, such as Terminator 2, Aliens & Predator, and/or Jurassic Park.
Never watched this show but I did recently pick-up a Bluegrass figure from the line complete but a little worn. I think if I had watched the show I would of passed on getting any of the figures but I rather like the one I got and might go after Mumbo Jumbo next.
I wonder how no toy company picked up on Gatchaman (Battle of The Planets)? A toy line from that show would've really been killer. Bigger than Silverhawks for sure
Great video. I'm a bit surprised you didn't talk more about the bird-accessories though, since they often did more than the figures. I mean, aside from the Copper Kidd, how many toys came with their own rape-whistles?lol It's a shame these toys will probably never be revamped with new materials and technology. I only ever had Quicksilver & that was it. I never thought about the toys having masks. Now that I think about it, you are right, it's a bummer. Maybe a 3rd party toy maker could make these toys right. The Four Horsemen do remakes of the Masters of the Universe in their Classics line (which includes their sister line Princess of Power) & it's been very successful. But I doubt Silverhawks was ever as popular as MOTU or even their sister line of PoP.
try to put a tale(in tagalog) from one of its legs & anothere rope on the othere side or its hans roll it over to your action figure, tie the first rope on some thing that is stable, then pull the second rope , finaly you see some thing more than just fliping there wings. As an adult Silverhawks might be the best figures to collect. They are so beautiful!

Lol that Duck Hunt addition was epic
+Nittany Pride Thanks Nittany!
"In the 80s we loved characters with masks and helmets more than we loved oxygen and CANDY!"
Too funny.
8 years later and you got another like 👍🏼 But I felt the same way. I loved my robo cop action figure for that very reason.
It's so cool to see all the toys that they had in the line.
I had a few of these as a kid, but only vaguely remembered them and the show. I still have a sky shadow and Monstar, but the rest are long gone. Thanks for the upload!
Another rad video by RetroBlasting. Good info/history, these guys (nor show) was on my radar.
I think those were the only toys that I never saw in Toy stores. They look great, I would love to have them now !
i had some of these as a kid its interesting how your thoughts on a show and toys change from when your younger.
I just love the dark background you use!
You focus right up to the theme!
LOVED the duck hunt jab at the end there.
Silverhawks was one of my favorite cartoons from the 80s - especially for the intro. I know some people weren't fans, but as a kid, this series was a joy for me.

I owned the main character, Copper Kid, the girl, the cowboy, and the Buzzsaw villain. I LOVED those toys when I was 5.
One of my most iconic toys during my childhood. And i do remember how rare to get it. I was so happy when i got the copper kid, and loved it when the episodes ends it always show some scenes involving the kidd and science
The Moon Striker ( The one with green metalic color ) has a Visor. So I'm pretty satisfied with it. How I missed my old toys...
I am so glad to found your channel

Great observations! I still marvel at the fact that Bluegrass was not outfitted with some sort of cosmic banjo at the outset.
Nice video. It was a discovering to me since I never owned one of those figures when I was a kid but always wished them. After watching this review I really don't think I wish those figures anymore.

Silverhawks is cartoon that passed me by. Need to watch it.
Like you, I remember being let down by the action figures. It wasn't till the green one came out that I actually liked the toys again

Loved the show, and I wanted to love the toys. Sigh.
I loved the show and the toys with the big exception that the paint on the silver hawks scratched so easily on the flesh tones it was brutal.
I have vague memories of these toys, but their hawk robot pack-ins were the things that had most caught my attention. Do you not have those?
I'm not sure about Dinosaucers, but the Voltron jet/car vehicles were sold here in the USA for a short time. I remember because one year my nephew got those at a local store, and I got the classic lion set(with pullback motors) and a (very heavy) metal 6-armed robot set that changed into 3 smaller robots. :)

i always wondered about the similarities between the silverhawks and the 90s marvel character darkhawk
Excellent review and video
God, I used to have that Mon-Star toy........ Serious nostalgia alert in 3...2...1... Wow!
I only got to see them inside their package at the supermarket´s toy aisle . Never got one or afford to buy one.
Wasn't there anything of the 80's and 90's that you liked? I remember gargoyles, Jem and the holograms, Dinosaucers. Call me old fashion or demented but if I can get the DVD I get them. lol never had the toy as a kid, but as collector, they do look great.
I remember owning the Super Tallyhawk toy, the one where the wings would snap forward to grab the bad guys
I was disappointed that I was not able to collect these when I was a kid.Even if you were able to get these toys without the masks,be thankful because these have become a part of your childhood that no other kids in your time (like me) who luckily have these.

Not for sure when I will have more but I do have a few other things you could post I will send some pictures your way when I get a chance. : )
I loved this show! Wish someone would pick this up like Hulu or Netflix.

I only have one of these and on his right thigh it says telepix. He also is the green one.
Praises, this series was hilarious.

I NEVER had a paint job problem with my toys.

Because it was a Japanese import and government laws in the 1970s prevented direct cross-promotion between toylines and cartoons!
The red villain was one of my favorite toys as a kid
We ha a kind of discount/second hand, store near where I lived, well I happened to find both "Silver hawks" and "Inhumanoids" toys the same day.
I barely saw them are Circus World,or any toy store at 100 Oaks,
Great video. I'm a bit surprised you didn't talk more about the bird-accessories though, since they often did more than the figures. I mean, aside from the Copper Kidd, how many toys came with their own rape-whistles?lol It's a shame these toys will probably never be revamped with new materials and technology. The mold designs really were beautiful. :(
Oh, and just a heads up. I saw a few Bravestarr toys and Ghostbuster lots going fairly cheap on Ebay earlier. Might be worth checking out. ;)
Thundercats is a stupid cartoon? Thundercats was one of my favorite shows as a kid!!!
I remember having this when i was about 5 or 6 n stopped playing with it the next day cause it was so crappy... even the arms did not spring up when i pressed the legs... i had more fun playing with the villain action figures...
The best birhtday present I ever got was the Tallyhawk toy. I still have it
Cool toys 😎 👍
Where is that Thundercats video?
I still have Buzzsaw in my collection, manage to salvage it back from the dusty storeroom. I'm not sure if i'm proud of owning him lol
awesome stuff
Wow! I forgot just how many of these I had - I even had the giant hawk. The only ones I didn't have were Mumbo Jumbo and the Ball dude. Ur right on all aspects: they were beautiful and well detailed, those wrist clips sucked, Monstar's switcharoo face jammed often, the bird figures did more than the character figures; on some, only one arm would want to go up and/or lost its snap. Mine must've had extra lead in the paint, because they actually didn't wear that bad. Bluegrass faded the worst.
I had that same yellow ball dude when i was a kid and only the little gold and the silver guy you showed i wasnt into those like that
Cooper Kid looks like a Teletubbie.
The silverhawk figures i had was bluegrass & one of the twins i think my older brother had quicksilver the wearing off of the metalic paint is true i noticed that about a few weeks later the manufactures could have done a better job in 1987 when i was 9 i always wanted mirage vehicle they could have came up with detachable masks for each of the figuress that would made it a lot better.....
Ohh I wish you would of mentioned there was never a playset. I think there base would of been a cool playset to have.
Could you do a video on toys lines that have unreleased toys like the vehicle voltron figures or dinosaucers here in the usa?
The maraj man I never see one at garage sales, flea markets, or even conventions. I only see them online and they go for a pretty penny these days.
I only bought the figures for their pets.
That's right, i liked the little pets more than the figures.
05:17 you own a Daitarn 3 figure?
Moon stryker, Quicksilver, flashback fueron mis favoritos
This was a good review of Silverhawks, you know what I mean?
My older brother had all of them.
I loved this toy line. And yes I agree with you. On everything you said. BUT MAN DO THEY LOOK GREAT IN MY TOY SHELF DISPLAY. oh by the way I'm subscribing to your channel.
3:38 "Why is he disgusted with those... beads... ugh!" Oh, my sides.
Don’t hold back, tell us how you really feel!
As bad as the show may be, you can't deny that the intro was fucking amazing.
I almost thought about spending hundreds on eBay for these.. Having major second thoughts now, lol.
That is an amazing video!
I wish there was a movie called: "The Silverhawks".
the masks are a good point! they were the coolest part! worth waiting for part 2.
I only ever had Quicksilver & that was it.
I never thought about the toys having masks. Now that I think about it, you are right, it's a bummer.
