What are your thoughts?
I did a Diploma of Electronic Music Production and I used my skills in Audio editing to edit Professional Podcasts and write scripts for complicated Podcasts.
I am also studying Cyber Security
I can’t share any related experience as I am just a hobbyist. But listening to musicians today, I. understand how difficult it is. I thought it was much easier to make a living. Pb is that we don’t want to pay more than a Spotify or Netflix fee to access to music / movies. Creating music has become too easy / too cheap to pay for people playing. It is bad for musicians. And as you said, they have to promote themselves, built a community, develop their multiple sites / social media. A full time job. If not more. And with access to 60 years of rock music with the streaming platform, competition is fierce for new players. Let’s hope that things will change. The Patreon approach may help as it enables fans to continuously support their artists (maybe better than buying one CD at a gig). Thanks for the content 🎉

Enjoyed your video and hearing your lessons from Nashville. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. I was a music theory major 30 years ago because I didn’t know what else to do. I quickly realized that wasn’t going to work out. Through some fateful connections I was able to switch into working in tech and use my experimence creating electronic music to transition to hardware and software development. Once i started making real money for the first time in my life, it was over.
As you said, aside from a few rare exceptions, no it is not possible anymore. Not if you want to own a home, support a family, have health insurance, build a retirement, etc. Music is best left as a side hobby, passion…something you can look forward to in your free time. It’s a lesson I wish I’d learned earlier than I did.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
It's kinda icky but playing at care homes can be a viable option
Get a job , and forget Music . America doesn't deserve music . It began when the mob took over the Musicians Unions in the 1940's . If you sidestep the Music Business completely you can possibly survive. The Music Business, from bottom to top , controlled by organized crime , makes it impossible to survive unless you are mobbed up , and even then you are placed into perpetual debt . Also , Musicians are foolish enough to give away their music for nothing . Hotels , Bars don't give away rooms & beer . Bottom line , musicians are screwing themselves . They don't view themselves as Artists , they view themselves as trained monkeys dancing for an organ grinder .
