Artists realise now that they don’t have to sign terrible deals to get somewhere with their music, so all the higher labels are getting a lot more pushback than they would a few decades ago. I do think streaming is a gift & a curse for musicians however. Streaming doesn’t pay enough at the low/ mid level to get a decent income, but can get more listeners than just selling CD’s the old way. Musicians can’t just be good at their instrument/ rapping etc anymore, you need to be a business person & have multiple streams to diversify yourself & pretty much be a full time social media personality now. Music is absolutely NOT dying. People just have to do footwork to find good music. The days of being spoon fed new artists is over. There are THOUSANDS of independent artists who invest in themselves and make great music. We just have to get out of the pattern of waiting for a label to bring out new artists and go back to supporting our local independent artists before labels ever get a hold of them. We blame the labels and the artists but music is a FAN DRIVEN industry…we just handed over the wheel to the labels for the last 25 years especially in hip hop. Time to get control again!
Ok, you've got 1000 potential new artists who put some music on the internet to choose from. How do you pick the successful one? You're pretending something incredibly difficult is the simplest thing in the world. Like no one at a record label could think "hey let's just sign the people who won't fail.":

Everything is shifting to independence and in house productions. A.I. will assist in that. Once streaming is over and digital downloads return then the money will come back. Streaming and subscriptions are destroying the industry. Music has inelasticity which means people will buy music even when in hard times. Music is sometimes the therapy people need just to get through the hard times.

I hope you’re right. I hear so many independent artists that are amazing with under 100k followers but on the radio they are playing the same old tired crap
And let’s not talk about the second and third and fourth mortgages on these homes that these artist own because they could not reap the benefits of selling out concerts.
There’s plenty of talented artists and great music today. The problem nowadays is connecting the great artists to potential fans. Social media algorithms, streaming platforms algorithms, and the corporate monopolization of outlets where people go to find new music is what has caused the disconnect between talented artists and consumers. Artists need to find direct ways to connect with listeners, and listeners need to be open to independent artists who are making the effort to connect. Back in the 90s and 2000s artists sold CDs, artists and promoters hosted open mic nights and talent shows, DJs used to play local hot new music at parties, clubs, and radio. DJs are a MASSIVE reason why people don’t hear a lot of great music because they went full industry/corporate and will only play mainstream artists or take money under the table. Long story short, there needs to be a great change and everyone involved is guilty of falling short and leading to this problem. We all need to make an effort to find great music again.
Lolol the so called algorithms is what killing music also it secretly hides upcoming artist and determines who will be seen. When this should be by the poeple to choose who they want to see . If there is 8 billion ppl on this planet you telling its so hard to see new artist ? Its selectively controlled .

@@Goldenlsr I know you but what am I much? Your comment was the first thing that made no sense because if the music industry is dying then WHY would you say something like that if it doesn't matter who's listening and who is not? Seriously...
Just the labels. It's a huge disconnection between the artists and executives. The biggest issue being how do artists get paid via streams. The labels aren't renegotiating terms according to the new standard. And also, the lack of quality music. Bro I was listening to the radio in an Uber, and the stuff on there was bad. TikTok music, not even a joke anymore.
I've been laid off, I feel bad for anyone who gets laid off. Even when you have a skill or talent sometimes and most the time its hard to get to where you were.
The music industry is facing significant challenges, but it's not necessarily "dying." Here's a breakdown of some key factors: The Rise of Streaming: Pros: Increased accessibility to music, wider reach for artists. Cons: Low royalty rates for artists, the potential for algorithmic manipulation, the dominance of a few major platforms. Declining Album Sales: Physical album sales have plummeted. While streaming numbers are high, the revenue per stream is very low. Shifting Revenue Streams: Artists now rely heavily on touring, merchandise, and brand deals for income. This creates a more precarious financial situation for many musicians. Increased Competition: The rise of social media platforms like TikTok has created new avenues for music discovery but also increased competition for attention. Lack of Artist Development: With the decline of traditional record labels, many artists struggle to find support for development and career growth.

Entertainment as a career is dying.
No just changing. Everyone wants to be an influencer
Musicians need to stop concentrating on getting rich and focus on creating good quality music and touring, selling merch, etc. Take a rock or metal band for instance. If they sound great live and make great songs the people will show up and they'll pack house.
I will still create no matter what happens.
Thank you for your contribution to the culture by covering topics like this Blacky, been tuned into your channel for a few years now and I can happily say you have a no bs channel that gets straight to the point.
I am a independent artist 😊been for the longest ❤true support mane love the insights
Richard, post some of your stuff . we want to hear. my coins are only going for indie folk ( movies and patreons included ) . i have been over main stream Beschissene Musik for a long long time
Good artistic music is back in the underground for now. In a few years it will come back to light again
People don’t even think they should buy albums.
So I don’t know why certain people laugh at artists not selling a bunch albums or streaming well.
I think artists will go back to selling hard copies of music to make actual money.
I been noticing this and it makes me so happy
I don't think record labels will disappear even tho the dislike for them is growing. They'll change how they do business for better or worse. I hope independent artists get paid more. I doubt independent artists will have a fair chance to be in the mainstream without extra BS
I think it’s more that the old way of thinking of music is dying.
You can’t solely focus on your craft.
We need some new real talent in music people are losing interest in the same mainstream music it’s Been sounding the same for to many years now.
The talent is there the problem is your not listening to them
@@dwaynejpeterkin brother the talent is there sure. But name me an artist that came out within the last 3 years that’s gonna be generational. You can’t
@@Real_token1 jid, baby keem, doechi, they got the talent for the next generation just have to give them a chance to grow

Enjoyed this topic so much, Blacky I would love to see more like this including speculation/predictions about the future of the music industry 🙏
There will always be a demand for new music…. always. There just needs to be revamped business models that serve artists better
Greed ruins literally everything
Corporate greed is ruining every industry they are involved with, not just music but gaming, movies, fashion, etc.
This right here. Gaming has been destroyed completely.
They said labels won't exist in 2026 and I believe it Independently getting the bag now!!
brother this is the effect of Atlantic records investing in tiktok one hit wonders. Also doesnt help that they were caught boting theres artist on youtube. Direct To Consumer is the new wave.
Stop signing and promoting 1000 GARBAGE artists and focus on a few with actual talent. Ones who actually create the art. Simple fix
Took the thoughts right out of my mind
Ok, you've got 1000 potential new artists who put some music on the internet to choose from. How do you pick the successful one? You're pretending something incredibly difficult is the simplest thing in the world. Like no one at a record label could think "hey let's just sign the people who won't fail.":

Honestly music nowadays has been really good, music labels are the only ones not. Its because they keep pumping out the same stuff to the same audience. After a while it gets very repetitive and boring fast…
Didn’t finish the video but its that and money hungry labels kill the creativity of music and makes it harder to just make art. It really really sucks ☹️
you have horrible taste how the hell is the music these days good
Lol music had not been good wtf are you talking about
What music is good to you these days 😂 I listen to music from every decade the quality has absolutely gone down

There has been a lot of good music out there they are either just not in the maintenance or there hidden by more popular or trending artists.
Nothing is surprising. Today’s music is brief and lacks substance. Only a few artists will get replayed in the years to come
Yeah true in terms of that I feel the weeknd post malone and Taylor swift are those artist that thier msuic will still be played and listened to decades later and prolly long after they passed away for thier songs can be considered timeless

Just one of the many reasons I love platforms like you tube . No dealings with snakes. Don't want em Don't need em .
The economy affects EVERYONE.
No Prince didn't change his name to a symbol to protest, he HAD TO because the record label OWNED HIS NAME so he was not allowed to release any music under the name Prince anymore. That's literally insane.
Not dying just changing
Making quality music is more accessible than ever for musicians.
The party is indeed dying....
And they said the party would never end
This is just another wave. The industry is not ending.
This exact same thing happened in 2010-2013 when hype/swag rap started becoming stale. Then Future, migos, chief keef, and young thug pioneered mumble rap to take off the way it did 2015-2017.
Yeah I swear that's true for when I started listening to rap msuic way back in middle school those where the rappers I got put on too!
I hate those rappers
Yung Lean changed how hip-hop sounded. So many people tried to replicate his sound. Pretty much all the big emo rappers from the time that “Ginseng” song came out until 2020 were copying him.

Music is timeless, the industry isn't.
I definitely agree with you on that one 💯
F THE INDUSTRY ITS ABOUT INDEPENDENTS
See this as a good thing. Same shit happened in the 80’s & that’s how we were blessed with hip-hop & punk rock. People are always gonna crave new sounds & artists are just gonna step up & get more innovative
same shit happened in the 80s? huh? excuse me? This shit is a wrap. We've been creatively bankrupt for the past 5 years. It doesn't take this long to get something going.
At 7:52 is that the Diddler in the black cowboy hat bruhhh!!? 😂😂😂
This was very informative! I didn't know exactly how but I've always felt like musicians were in debt for forever! Considering certain people like Beyonce all the money you've made why are you still trying to make money. Like anybody else would have retired already by now
Kendrick said it's time. I guess he was right!
Speak on it BlackySpeaks 🐐
Getting signed is almost exactly like getting arrested. You should have either called a lawyer already or that should be your very next move after signing.
calling a lawyer after signing is like calling a lawyer after you got arrested and signed a confession. way too late
I just don’t care about albums or music no more tbh even from my favourite artists
Music isn’t dying. It’s more of the genre like hip-hop is most importantly because it’s watered down everybody sounds alike no natural talent anymore.
Once artists start working together things will change
I have 5 singles out. It cost me less than $200 each song.
I recorded myself in my bedroom, sent the music to Nigeria for mixing n mastering.
If I get $10k advance I will drop 3 albums. I don’t buy jewelry I repeat my clothes I don’t go to the club and my song is already on radio in Nigeria.
You want expensive you’ll get expensive you want cheap you’ll find cheap at the end of the day hope your art sells.
How'd you get the song on radio on Nigeria?

I know you but what am I much? Your comment was the first thing that made no sense because if the music industry is dying then WHY would you say something like that if it doesn't matter who's listening and who is not? Seriously...
Just the labels. It's a huge disconnection between the artists and executives. The biggest issue being how do artists get paid via streams. The labels aren't renegotiating terms according to the new standard. And also, the lack of quality music. Bro I was listening to the radio in an Uber, and the stuff on there was bad. TikTok music, not even a joke anymore.
2024 was truly the year of layoffs. Wonder what’s projected for next year…oh, more layoffs.
I've been laid off, I feel bad for anyone who gets laid off. Even when you have a skill or talent sometimes and most the time its hard to get to where you were.
Bruh music not dying just cuz ur favorite artists fall off don’t mean music is dying
support your local independent artists 🫡
Artist in general haven’t been putting out good records out.
Eric, they are trying to survive in a world of beats with zero substance
This is the greatest time in history to be an artist.
When the gimmick artist like 4batz and Ice Spice fall, that's when the artist with the real talent will come in to repair it. This year proves that.
The music industry is facing significant challenges, but it's not necessarily "dying." Here's a breakdown of some key factors:
The Rise of Streaming:
Pros: Increased accessibility to music, wider reach for artists.
Cons: Low royalty rates for artists, the potential for algorithmic manipulation, the dominance of a few major platforms.
Declining Album Sales:
Physical album sales have plummeted.
While streaming numbers are high, the revenue per stream is very low.
Shifting Revenue Streams:
Artists now rely heavily on touring, merchandise, and brand deals for income.
This creates a more precarious financial situation for many musicians.
Increased Competition:
The rise of social media platforms like TikTok has created new avenues for music discovery but also increased competition for attention.
Lack of Artist Development:
With the decline of traditional record labels, many artists struggle to find support for development and career growth.
The party’s over

Rise of entrepreneurial music. Music industry is growing.
Isn't ALL of this the Music Industry's OWN fault??? ever since they stopped signing and promoting artists like Lauren Hill and Will Smith... and, instead went with clothes-less strippers and gun-toting, gangbanging thugs... so, Music Industry, don't cry now
If Lauryn hill and will smith had new projects, the industry would release them.
The internet chose the type of artists you named, and the industry follows. The industry doesn’t have as much power over public opinion as you’re saying.
Consumers fault as well
@@FJK22You are wrong that’s not how Hollywood works. People like Lauryn hill got blackballed and attacked by the industry that’s why she left. Producers, managers, creative people in the industry will NOT work with you once you get blackballed even as an independent artist because they don’t want their own careers going down.
@@FJK22 Yes it does
@@Bayo106 it really doesn’t. You can plan a big press release and iTunes’ front page and get a rolling stone interview but the public decides popularity, and the industry follows
I've been signed and known people to be signed by labels. It's pretty much a loan that you gotta use to make back the loan at best. If you don't make more you're gone and damn near blacklisted.
Independent is the way to go, sadly it's more difficult and you'll make less money unless you catch attention and views.
