In Toms videos you get 40 years of rock guitar evolution slammed into a 3 minute riffage. You could spend 3 months on the first few minutes of this thing and still not have gleaned all the wisdom off it. These riffs ain’t cheap there’s a books’ worth of history behind every lick. Back in the late 90’s, I quit playing guitar to learn drums so I could get better on my “time”. Good investment of time. When I picked the guitar back up, it was like starting all over again. “Time” well spent. Thanks BUK!!!
That reggae shuffle was really awesome - perfectly percussive and bumpin.. My dream guitar has always been a TV Yellow 50's special... That one has so much fretboard wear - love that LOVE. Armpit on fire at 14:24 - one achieves this level of guitar zen after 50,000 hours.. Happy Sunday, Uncle Larry!
Hey Tom, gods honest truth, I no sooner put my phone down right after watching this episode and my wife asked me to clean the solarium window in the kitchen. Inspired by your closing words, I got the ladder, glass cleaner and rags, without having to be asked twice mind you and risked life and limb to do as she asked. As I was finishing up she said “you really do love me”…❤️ …I can now spend the afternoon plunking on the ol guitar guilt free.
Offering your your experience to others for free is a gift you give to others .I've been playing for over 50 years and find you motivating and I learn from you . Good on you and Thank You !!
I love the way you hear things and put them together. Original. That's the style of music I like... original. As a good friend of mine said, there are two kinds of music, the kind ya like and the kind ya don't.
I watched the review and found it very informative. It was kindly done and should have caused no problems. It is always valuable to have someone criticize playing from outside as long as it is done with respect and kindness.
Hey Tom , have you ever met Jim Fox and Dale Peters . Of the James Gang ? I feel they are two vastly underrated musicians. I know Jim still lives in Mentor.
I read the description too, after my last faux pas. I will gladly contribute to the grill fund for all the insight and killer playing that Tom so freely shares! Thanks Tom! Shout out to stringlocker! Stay real brothers!
I read the video description and I just wanted to say, you’re a cool dad Tom. I watch this channel for the guitar content, but I always catch that you’re thinking about and talking about your kids. As someone who had a dad that was very aloof and pretty much ignored me growing up, I hope when I have kids someday I can break the cycle and be a little bit like you. Keep rockin’
Sometimes the opposite of what you think is the most important. As a kid my cousin Graham Todd (Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John) mentored me about my piano playing. The biggest thing he taught me was to practice how your fingers lifted off the note as much as on - and always with a metronome. This rings true with the practicing your time in the space between notes.
Hundreds of videos and I still see new ideas in every one. It’s unbelievable. I’ve played and watched guitarists for more than 30 years, but I’ve never seen someone with a deeper well.
Spot on Uncle Larry. No one ever gets better at anything if we aren't willing to learn from those who have paid the price to become great at something. You've paid the price to speak with honesty.
I absolutely love your sincerity and honesty - as well as listening to your playing. Your down to earth insights on music, guitar, gear and life in general is a breath of fresh air. I am an amateur guitarist with a small crew of musicians - referred to as the Improv(e) Collective. - where we simply improv and explore anything everything we are capable of. Keep on keeping on on!
I’m 72 and guilty of over playing all these years. I recently had a fall going my photography and tore my rotator cuff all to pieces. Major surgery. I’m now in physical therapy and relearning how to play guitar. My right arm and hand has lost some coordination. No more alternate picking ever again. And most important is the phrasing and space in between the notes. Learn to BREATHE. You don’t have to play everything you know and can do all the time. And learn chords. That’s what I learn on this channel. More chords and voicings. Tom you always do a great job on chord voiceings. And you are a great composer/guitarist. That’s what I’m trying to do. Write good string based original music. My hat off to you. In Stereo is a journey. Takes you places. Damn good. Peace to you and Dreg on. 🎸🎸
If one of our tech-savvy Homeskoolers would make a compilation of every time Tom says "..then I'll be happy" with the pause and stare afterwards, well... ....then I'll be happy 🧐
For those that didn’t catch it, the tasty Spanish lick is from theme song of The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas. One of my favorites. Love your playing Buk!

He was helping me get better and i am grateful.
Anthony, you made an investment in yourself and showed courage by stepping out for all of us to see you receive feedback. And because of you stepping out, we all get to learn from it. I’m excited to see what you take from Tom’s suggestions as you will continue to get much out of your lesson for months and possibly years to come.

As a fellow Old "guitarded" rocker like you Tom, bet you've done this 70's timing tip (or how we learned before the internet) I used to put on a record or better yet the radio. Already, knowing the Song, I would play along for a minute, then quickly crank down the radio volume to zero. Then whilst continuing to play "along" I'd have anyone around randomly crank the volume knob back up! When you're still in the right place in the right time ,you know can trust the clock in your head, or your gut , (and sometimes lower.) Or the real way i perfected my timing /meter (this is an unforgiving teacher) Lock yourself in a room 4-5 hrs with an old tape echoplex or memory man. Playing rhythm and lead lines on the beat, berween the beat (fake dotted 8th setting) add your own harmony parts on the repeats. Practicing with an echo is how I perfected my meter or inner clock. You learn real quick when you hear your mistake(s..s.s.s.sss500ms later, later, later.. Fellow Homeschooler's it works, works ,wor.... On a more personal note.. I love you Tom ! I love it here so much. Everyone is cool and helpful. I'm 72, I've been playing a long time too. Many years ago I heard Willie talk about the 3 rules for his band. Don't be an ass hole, don't be an ass hole and don't be an ass hole! That was straight from Willie Nelson himself. Good rules for most any situation. 8) Love you guys, peace --gary
God, I wish I had the time to practice more. With being self employed, the work doesn't end after finishing work in the field. You get home to do invoicing, tax crap, etc.... but just watching other people play as I go from one job to the next is memory learning on the fretboard for me.
dude your advice about the headphones, thats some of the best advice on this chanel ever for me. Wow thanks tom. I found myself doing that in recording and considered it red light anxiety, but now i see what the trick is.
About rating another players game: Maybe some people confuse giving critique with make yourself feeling bigger by someone else feeling smaller...BUT: Critic means giving you an honest review of weak and strong parts of your playing. So that you can grow and get better. And that's what you do Uncle Larry. Nothing but good karma points for this. Go on!
Hey Larry, many years ago a great old guy i used to jam with told me to give equal attention to what TO PLAY as well as what NOT to play (when you lay out). He went on to say the notes you do play are equally important as those you dont. Time and space are what gives music its vital tenson.
My Grandmother once said referring to a particularly tight-fisted relative of ours, that "He'd walk 40 miles for 2 free turnips" She also once opined that her definition of a gentleman was "a man who knows how to play the bagpipes - and doesn't"
Poor listeners also don't like silence, only the relentless sound of their voice. A great guitar part is like a great conversation, and an electric guitar has more capacity to converse through expressiveness than any other instrument except the human voice.
Ha! Ha! Love the comment at the very end. I did two things on this Sunday: Put a new belt to the roller shutter, which had been a family request for a while now, because the old one had an increasingly annoying tendency to get stuck. And charted out a pop song that I am supposed to play the guitar to at my younger son's farewell party at his kindergarden before summer break. Punk at heart that I am, I do appreciate the challenge of playing a pop tune as nicely and cleanly as I can. The tune does have a bridge with a half-time feel, even ending on a break, and, when played, will require some patience to sound and feel as intended. Edit - on the topic of the correlation between rushing through songs and ethnicity: This has indeed been scientifically proven long ago. Two research groups called "RUN DMC" and "Aerosmith" joined expert forces and once conducted an experiment that became famous under the name "Walk this way". Event though the general tempo remained the same throughout the study to avoid any possible bias in the result, it cannot be questioned that one research group gave its part of the experiment an impatient, rushed feel, while the other research group maintained a relaxed state throughout. Most remarkably, the experiment did not end in disagreement. All scientists involved eventually acknowleged any existing differences and respectfully ended the experiment in an attitude that is friendly and respectful. The experiment has beed documented in a video for later generations.
Guitarists are the most forgiving, and generous people, when it comes to beginners or people who can't play very well,we put up with a lot, just because of a person's effort, and not as likely to be critical.
Happy Sunday from Vancouver Island Tom. Working on a little AC install over here before we get blasted from the sun all summer. Recently got a tri-guitar stand as I remembered you saying you dont put your guitars in cases.
Hi Tom, I recently saw a video of you and Jed live . I really loved how your lead was following Jed’s vocal, in previous videos you explained how you listen to the singer and find the melody. I’m curious if that came to you n the moment? It seemed like Jed through a look to you like wow! Thanks for sharing the knowledge and wisdom.
Hey Tom I just stumbled across country’s family reunion Nashville, is that your pal world class piano player Gordon Mote I think it’s around 2008 , cool to see these awesome musicians
One possibility for the online lesson/critique segment; You could demonstrate what you mean when you are giving them tips and advice. The first one was pretty straight forward. You've already talked about the trem' bar and how to keep it close and be able to play with it in "ready position." But maybe if you played the part where he rushed a bit and showed how to maintain pace/space there. Just a thought. Keep up the great work and I'll keep tuning in;-)
No need to apologize for reviewing someone else’s work. It’s part of life’s performance of skilled work . Annual reviews in the workplace are common from managers who usually are more experienced in their craft. Hah You are offering valuable feedback for those who want it to improve their skills because they actually respect you already or they wouldn’t offer their videos . Unlike the average manager who has to do it because he gets hit on his bonus. Lol and the employees who dread it. Sharing your love of and respect of playing guitar is admirable. Keep on rocking Session Man! 🤟🏼

Hey Buko.

To those who may choose to join the Home Skoolin’ community, perhaps this may help, perhaps not:
The Rules of Skool.
1) Do not tell knuckleheads about Home Skoolin.
2) DO NOT TELL KNUCKLEADS ABOUT HOME SKOOLIN!
3) If someone says "Stop" or goes limp, taps out, keep playing.
4) Play only what’s right, leave out what ain’t.
5) Where you end a note is just as important as where you start it.
6) Vibrato is a privilege, not a right, so please don’t abuse it.
7) Be thoughtful about the wang bar. Use it with love and emotion. Over use will grown hair on your palms.
9) There is no rule 8.
10) Episodes will go on as long or as short as they have to.
11) Your volume knob is your friend.
12) You know you have a true friend when you find yourselves finishing each other’s sammiches.
14) This ain’t a complete list of the rules.
15) If this is your first time Home Skoolin’, just act like you’ve been here before.
Hope this proves useful or entertaining and doesn’t result in me getting hit in the head with a tomato.

You are a lucky man to have sooo many friends.
I will own that guitar one day!!!! Man I love that thing.
As someone who doesn’t play guitar, I find myself drawn into things he plays on this one, just a bit more. Somethin’ about it just grabs at ya
Reach out (I'll be there). It took me all day to finally hear the lyrics in my head along with that melody.
A friend of mine, Dennis, runs Traeger Man Grills in Nashville...I could get you a deal! Cheers Tom!!
Cool. Should do an episode of that. When he picks it up /has it delivered. Send Tom an email.
Uncle Larry, you are the best boss. 😊 You're a natural, one of the guy's!
thank you love
There is Nothing louder than the sound of silence maybe that’s why it catches folks off guard
"First time it's ever happened..." 😂 (Interesting comment on Gear Page) Larry always has the greatest zingers.
Whoa Uncle Larry went a little reggae there for a minute! That was fun
A cup of coffee with Uncle Larry. Just no better way to start the day.
A machine my ninja- machine....cyborg metronome... props #1
Tom if I were a rich man you would be too! Thanks for all this great content
Incredible………so good..
Can’t wait for Homeskoolin by the pool!
Happy P 90 to you too TB
As my dear granny used to say , mainly to the men in the family… “ Where’s there hair , there’s comfort . “
dude your advice about the headphones, thats some of the best advice on this chanel ever for me. Wow thanks tom. I found myself doing that in recording and considered it red light anxiety, but now i see what the trick is.
learn from larry's years of mistakes....for FREE....950 videos...yet everyone bitches that 500 is too much for a guitar lesson....oy
@@501chorusechoHahahahahahahahahaha. It's the state of the world, we're all just broke
Go on!
Lord, they sound good 🎸
Hey Larry, many years ago a great old guy i used to jam with told me to give equal attention to what TO PLAY as well as what NOT to play (when you lay out). He went on to say the notes you do play are equally important as those you dont. Time and space are what gives music its vital tenson.
I read the description so this has to mean you have another cooking video up your sleeve!
My Grandmother once said referring to a particularly tight-fisted relative of ours, that
"He'd walk 40 miles for 2 free turnips"
She also once opined that her definition of a gentleman was "a man who knows how to play the bagpipes - and doesn't"
Poor listeners also don't like silence, only the relentless sound of their voice. A great guitar part is like a great conversation, and an electric guitar has more capacity to converse through expressiveness than any other instrument except the human voice.
fact
The holes are what makes the swagger happen. Too much weedly weedly and no holes = groove death.
My main musical mentor was a guy older than me that invited me in as a youngster. He told me to “ play for people not at them”. Space was important.
UL just keep helping, thanks
If you ever swing by Burlington Wi. I'll give you a free tech 2 patio grill. or any other Homeschoolers.
Hang in there Bobby S. You’re our great hope for the future.
Ha!
Nice truth nugget at the end 🔥🔥🔥
Guitarists are the most forgiving, and generous people, when it comes to beginners or people who can't play very well,we put up with a lot, just because of a person's effort, and not as likely to be critical.
Yeah right
Hahaaaa
Happy Sunday from Vancouver Island Tom. Working on a little AC install over here before we get blasted from the sun all summer. Recently got a tri-guitar stand as I remembered you saying you dont put your guitars in cases.
Love this gig yeah! Is that the amp humming?
Stringlocker strikes me as the guy you want sitting next to you in a bar telling you like it is, or in the trenches.
Tom you have stepped in all the greats shoes, and no longer have anything to fear because you now where them.
Many years ago I lucked up on a '59 Tweed Deluxe. Great amp!
Hi Tom,
I recently saw a video of you and Jed live . I really loved how your lead was following Jed’s vocal, in previous videos you explained how you listen to the singer and find the melody. I’m curious if that came to you n the moment? It seemed like Jed through a look to you like wow! Thanks for sharing the knowledge and wisdom.
I saw that, too. Thought the same thing.
Yes! Elliot Randall reeln in the years, my favorite guitar solo of all time….👏🤘🙌
One day I will play it correctly and up to tempo.
Oh no now reelin in the years is in my head
@@stringlocker Something else will displace it in due time like the Macarena or Little Willy……🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Tom I just stumbled across country’s family reunion Nashville, is that your pal world class piano player Gordon Mote I think it’s around 2008 , cool to see these awesome musicians
Watching today's F1 and listening to the Buk. It works!!
I'm watching the Tour De France. The scenery is beautiful.
My critique of your playing.
YOU ROCK!!
