Man, I just have to say thank you! You make me laugh nearly everyday. Moved to Nashville in ‘93 as a musician. Worked with many artists in development and did some hired-gun roadwork. Had two children and couldn’t stomach being away from them and stumbled into a career in web development. Got divorced in 05 and about drank myself to death from being away from my kids a lot of the time. You’re so right; these are the good old days! I still play everyday and play out sometimes. Your channel has been an inspiration since the pandemic. To me you’re like a great friend. Sorry for the novella but wanted to share. Keep up the great work amigo! ❤
I remember watching a zz top documentary and hearing gibbons put it that way. Definitely a humbling perspective to have considering how the universe works. Glad I bumped into this channel. ✌️
Tom- I worked in live TV for 15 years, traveling all over the world for major sporting events. I completely understand the anxiety about not wanting to go back out on the road. People who aren’t in the biz of traveling don’t understand how we could pass on what everyone assumes is such a glamorous job. I get it man! I took a University job a few miles from my house and it was a great decision for me. Your boys will be glad your home to rock out with them this summer.
Tom, contest aside, I’m just honoured that you might have spent one minute listening to me play after everything you’ve done for us all. Respect as always.
Hey Tom.. I love your show… PayPal…. I’m SO freakin broke these days that I can’t even pay attention…Seriously.. not your fault.. I’m an old bass playin carpenter trying to learn electric guitar who hasn’t planned well for retirement… and there’s probably quite a few like me out here… If I had $$ I’d probably take actual lessons.. but anyway I’m gonna keep watching and listening to you.. until you say otherwise .. God bless ya man…👍🏼❤️
I work in construction and you can always tell when someone answers their phone to the wife, they frown and mutter yeah? contrast that with the light cheery tone when speaking to a friend, you are so right Tom, as a 65 yr old I remember the days when most homes did'nt even have a house phone, now it's a total barrage of nonsense, can't even relax in your own home with them and the young have become phone zombies, and I thought emails were a pain in the arse, thanks again for the videos that brighten my day, Ed from the UK.
The very best days were when our daughter was young.. driving her to school... fun , sometimes serious conversations... Soaked it all in as best I could.. You got it.. Another great guitar hang... Thank you..
wow. i'd honestly say your mouth - that momentary pursing, a kind of brief comma in your dialog that's uniquely expressive and introspective at once, giving us a second to think - is one of the many things i delight in while Homeskoolin'.
These ARE the good old days. My three youngest went from that backseat ride to school to college and babies before I knew it. Your boys DO have a great dad.
On the topic of player hybris: actually, in the last few years I got super humble. I really realized I am a beginner compared to "real guitarists", reevaluating how I viewed and rated music and recording. It's a trip and with every step I take I become aware of more room for improvement in my playing AND listening. The road to musical and guitar greatness is endless...
Ahhh Yeah, the good old days! My 13 year old son has a really eclectic taste in music. from MF Doom to Hiram Bullock, to Lester Young. The other day, i was taking him to school, and was playing Plexi-Soul. He immediately needed to know who it was. I asked, "you don't recognize this? That's uncle Larry. The Starship trooper!" He overhears me listening to your videos, while i work all the time. He immediately installed BandCamp, so he could listen on his own. Thanks for the inspiration! I am trying to raise this kid right!
Oh HELL yeah! I just asked on the newest video if there were any instrumental solo records!!! And here is my answer right in the next vid description! Sweet
Tom, I can feel and empathize with your passion and the guitar faces as well as the “pain” that comes out in your playing sometimes… I have been watching your channel for a while now and last night for the first time I stumbled on some of the older ones with you and Sarah. Brother, I can see the love when you were together and the looks you 2 would give each other. There was a special connection. I am sorry for you. It does sound like the 2 of you have the best interest of the boys in mind tho. Thank you for that. Thank you for posting your simple, un-produced awesome videos, and sharing your absolutely bad ass talent with us. They are inspiring to this fellow NE Ohio boy. … may the universe bless you and allow you to keep sharing your life with us. Thanks for being honest and real brother.
Enjoy those boys Tom. It flies by.. My youngest daughter just graduated from HS on Friday. It seems like yesterday I was singing “the Trees” by Rush to her at bedtime.
I have no dog in this fight at all. I do not play guitar, but have great ear for music! I stumbled on this YT by way of Rick Beato. I love how music is “explained”. I’m a RN for over 40 yrs of nursing. I actually have applied how I tolerate people by just listening to the channel for just your “ dude talk” in the 70s & 80s we used to go to garage bands of friends. Listen to music played, play pool, drink beer and just BS. I miss this wisdom banter Uncle Larry! Although I’m not a musician, I enjoy your heartfelt wisdom “I’m just lucky to be here”! Carry on!
I love the fact that almost all your video's makes me laugh with your humor....(it's just Uncle Larry)....Tom, God bless you for giving us the time to relax and kick back and watch one of the greatest musicians alive today. I say musician because you are the Music Man, your guitar playing is off the charts but your knowledge of music in general is just F-ing unimaginable....You have truly been blessed with a tremendous gift that you share with the world....Peace out Home-skoolers. Much love!!!
About studio work: When you listen to a record it's a finished thing - most of the times you don't hear how hard it was, to get there. And that's for the better, I think. Cause who listens to a record and says: Great, how hard they worked for that... Much respect to all the studio cats bringing us music to enjoy to... Thank you Tom for everything you put out here. Helps a lot. A LOT! Best T
I once spent six months living on a tropical island with no phones or anything like that. Primitive. When I got back I realized how physically ruinous things like ringing phones are for you. Enjoy your videos. I'm not a particularly neurotic guy, but you brighten my day.

This is such a great channel for so many reasons, Tom's amazing playing, Tom's great friends he shares with us, all the great music and tips we get from the session man and all the totally cool cats that hang out here. It has been two plus years I think, anyhow there has been so few haters over the time it's like a beautiful island of all the cool kids in one place. Much Love.
Tom, You took me back to when I drove our kids to school; a great almost 'bonding' time. It reminded me of some advice I was told when they were quite young: "The days may be long, but the years are short." Man, that stuck with me.
I took your advice about nut maintenance, I have been having tuning issues lately. Took all my guitars and cleaned the string paths and lubricated the slots on the nuts. My Bigsby works like a charm now on my ES-345. Thanks Uncle Larry, your videos are always a hoot!
I thought at one point I could play in time on beat . Then I tried recording just some basic blues riffs into GarageBand . It was at that moment I remembered I cant sing cant dance and my legs are thin. Recording is insanely hard and people who can pull it off deserve the utmost respect and compensation for their abilities. It blows my mind listening to your looping abilities. That takes way more precision than some might think. Cant be speeding up or slowing or it don’t work when you try playing over it. Hell just starting and stopping the loop record at the right time is hard.
Hi Uncle Larry So true about the cell phones. I refer to mine as “the electronic leash” - thanks again for another great and inspiring vid… As always ~Sean
Tom you really seem like a great Team player in the studio videos, and you never seem ungrateful, more just glad to be creating. Plus you freely share a lot of real-world wisdom! Thanks
Uncle Larry! You’re totally right about how hard session playing is. I’m not a session man, but even being in rehearsal with a band having to switch from playing a blistering solo on whatever electric you have, to playing a mellow acoustic part, to overdubbing something ethereal, etc.. all the while the singer is telling you about their weekend plans is exhausting for me in only a 2 hour span. I can’t imagine doing it for a week, let alone a career. You the man and your videos make my day. They let me know there’s always something more to strive for (in a good way). Thank you.
Tom, brother, don't know if your aware but you are as fine a philosopher of life as you are a guitarist!! Love hanging in the kitchen and drinking beer with you and hearing your musical stories and your take on the wild ride. Thanks for keeping it up. As far as I can figure, its the only good thing that came out of The Great Whatever That Was.
Studio work is not for everybody. I have mad respect for you, bro. When I watch you work in the studio and on these shows I am blown away by your consistency and musicality. Having thick skin and a good personality are also just as necessary. You're one in a million (or more)! Thanks for sharing.
That's some deep thought today Uncle Larry. I don't have time to fully write out all the things I'd like to. So I won't try. It's your no Bull approach, tempered with a large dose of humility that keeps me here. As always, much respect...
@@501chorusecho Uncle Larry; I know the cords, the scales, and the Theory. And I've worked full time with a Guitar for over forty eight years. You're right, the 'price is right'. But it's your your insight and attitude that make me think we'd be good friends. Should we ever meet, I'm buying the first round...
Uncle Larry, you always make my day better. Whether its understanding the world of sessions, music, guitar playing, or great advise for life...its all good. And as you say, "We are just lucky to be here". Even trying to screw up the courage to create a string bending video.
its really cool how engaged you are with the viewers even if it means grappling with some trolls. the internet is the ultimate goliath. i solute you in you quest to make the humans feel love thru rocknroll with your battle axe!
Great Comments Tom!! And you're so right about words and experience! No substitute for OJT or Life Experiences! Got to learn the life lessons in person... no one can tell us about them! Really enjoyed this one... as with all of em! Thx, jp
Thank you for all your honesty, open heart and all the wisdom learned through the trials and errors... Huge respect not for just being amazing , complete musician but equally a great human being! You Rock uncle Larry! Respect 🙏 🤙👏🎶💪
Hello, first time speaking to the teacher. Wish I had an apple. Love the channel. Anyway, just so you know (I bet you love that opening) I started watching this video with guitar in hand, as usual, and you played a Bm, 7th fret with the high D. I played it, moved it around and got lost for an hour. That's why we get behind in our lessons. Just sayin. :)
Man Tom this video was so resonating with me. I wanted to respond to everything you said, but I’ll try to refrain or keep it minimal. I moved from Ohio to Eugene Oregon about five years ago. All my music connections were either in Ohio or based from there. I’m now 70 years old and have been a performing musician since I was 10 years old. Playing various genres of music and master of none. I was the new old kid in town so I started going to the Rooster’s Jam on Tuesday night at a local venue. Robert Cray used to frequent this jam in the 70’s as a young unsigned musician. It was a good move to get involved there and I quickly was employed by some good acts with work and integrity. But some nights those jam ( Blues sorta) were so painful that I would get “ bad music poisoning “ and feel like I had forgotten how to play. Wasn’t me though, I’m still young at heart and passionate. I didn’t want to be a dick or perceived as a control freak so at first I would just hang and try to maintain so finesse or capture the zone if possible. Eventually I noticed there were 8-10 players on stage ( or in the bus but no one was driving? No one calling for dynamics or knowing what that means? Like what do you mean dynamics….I’m playing as loud and busy as I can?!! So I eventually started fronting because I also sing and dared to call solos and insist on shorter solos ( not being condescending but you barely said anything in the first pass, you really don’t have that much to say). Consequently I have more and more cooperation from the players because the frickin’ buss is careening down the highway with no one driving. I strive to let everyone play and create a place musically for them to speak. On the other hand if there’s another “ old bull” on the set I’m happy to be a passenger. Yes the old bull story has guided me for a long time and when you shared it I was happy you knew and appreciated that joke too. A great joke is like a perfect musical phrase that says so much with so little. Thanks for validating my point and showing me once again that you are the GOAT. Also when people make stank faces unconsciously and not as a show, it’s cool even if it’s unflattering. I used to tease a friend of mine from Kent Ohio, that if it hurts so much to play guitar, maybe you should quit. I’m probably too pan faced because I internalize my emotions and send them to my hands. I’m “ into it “ but not in a Santana/Bonamosa/ John Mayer way. That’s them ( some posing there) but those kats can play and deserve there credit. Anyway if this was a short version of my thoughts just imagine how long winded I can be! You keep hitting the mark over and over and I appreciate that. Last thought is about all the editing and clouds of nat notes some young players are doing. Yes there’s skill there and maybe if they don’t flame out they will eventually become something truly special. But you play like a great baseball player in the moments that you have to bring the game. None of the greats in that game got to edit over and over. Only by showing up prepared for the next possibilities in a given moment where it really counts. Keep pressing brother and at least you don’t drape a handkerchief over your hand while other kats are watching you. Like some used to do. Now what distortion pedal did you use? Peace.
;one more word on the pin up boi of modern guitar tim henson, he is most definitely on record as fully embracing and mimicking the most insane fast cut music genres alive (hyperpop/glitch pop/dub step/ and the far edge of hip hop;death grips etc., as well as a dash of k-pop/j-pop). This is the generation of kids that grew up with a Guitar Hero PlayStation guitar,...which many are noting (with a little hindsight) as a valuable gateway to this wonderful artform we all enjoy. cheers again mate
I played guitar for many years, and because of life I given up for several times, but because of your videos I get motivation to play again and have fun, thank you Tom!! Love from Portugal!
Tom your two young boys have one hell of a teacher in you...I see many YT channels that have been uploading the same inane lines for years and are only now finding out how harmonically lacking they are...watching you.
Thank you for being such a cool Homeskoole teacher dude! Glad I get to watch these videos you’re putting out. The CTS String Bending contest has been too much fun to watch!
It seems that (some) musicians have preconceived ideas about how professional musicians live and work. Tom's experience is pure gold, yet some listeners can't see that. Thank you for inviting us into your life.
Totally agree about the Phone! I Did 2 days of sessions this week and left my phone in my backpack.. checked it once at lunch and that was it… so much more relaxing.
Cellphones = Little Black Mirrors. We love ya Uncle Larry! I have to say that is a joy being in a community of stellar musicians. Music shouldn't be a D**k measuring contest. You've done a damn good job weeding the garden!
How anyone criticizes Tom is insane. I love everything about uncle Larry, even his fish mouth. Really so beautiful playing in this one as usual. I should sit down and try to transcribe some of those chords, I've been in a rut lately. Im really Down on my playing. Thanks so much for sharing.

"...leave the Cannoli, Take the FUZZ" - thanks for the episode Tom
That's some deep thought today Uncle Larry.
I don't have time to fully write out all the things I'd like to. So I won't try.
It's your no Bull approach, tempered with a large dose of humility that keeps me here.
As always, much respect...
And the price of course…
@@501chorusecho Uncle Larry;
I know the cords, the scales, and the Theory.
And I've worked full time with a Guitar for over forty eight years.
You're right, the 'price is right'. But it's your your insight and attitude that make me think we'd be good friends.
Should we ever meet, I'm buying the first round...
@@MichaelAntusright on bro
Thanks for all the great videos. This is my favorite channel.
thanks cat
Love your view on the phone! I am with you, shut everything off......
Thanks Tom ,im very new to your channel and I'm really digging it, shout out to Otis Gibbs i first saw you on his channel
Tom, sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed and anxious and I struggle to focus on anything. Your videos always bring me out of it ✌
Getting HomeSkoolin notifications of a new vid you posted is always a bright spot in the day when I check my phone! Thank you Tom!!
Great Comments Tom!! And you're so right about words and experience! No substitute for OJT or Life Experiences! Got to learn the life lessons in person... no one can tell us about them! Really enjoyed this one... as with all of em! Thx, jp
Uncle larry, thank you thank you!
Very Walsh-like on the intro, great stuff! I've been into the James Gang lately, my ear is now tuned to it.
Just sayin. :)
Great observation about society, music and today life.
Peace.
Uncle Larry and that pedal show collaboration would be awesome!
I'm glad you are able to spend time with your boys. Thanks for the guitariszmo stuff. I always get some great take away from the improve.
Loving the frequent uploads to the channel.
These are definitely the good ole days. Just having you make your videos and to enjoy this content is a gift. Thank you!
Marc! Good to see you here too!
;one more word on the pin up boi of modern guitar tim henson, he is most definitely on record as fully embracing and mimicking the most insane fast cut music genres alive (hyperpop/glitch pop/dub step/ and the far edge of hip hop;death grips etc., as well as a dash of k-pop/j-pop). This is the generation of kids that grew up with a Guitar Hero PlayStation guitar,...which many are noting (with a little hindsight) as a valuable gateway to this wonderful artform we all enjoy. cheers again mate
K-pop….K-tel….K-hole
I played guitar for many years, and because of life I given up for several times, but because of your videos I get motivation to play again and have fun, thank you Tom!! Love from Portugal!
Lot of wisdom on this episode. ✌️😊
This is so badass right out of the gate.
Tom your two young boys have one hell of a teacher in you...I see many YT channels that have been uploading the same inane lines for years
and are only now finding out how harmonically lacking they are...watching you.
Starship trooper out here taking us to school as always
Thank you for being such a cool Homeskoole teacher dude! Glad I get to watch these videos you’re putting out. The CTS String Bending contest has been too much fun to watch!
Hey uncle Larry awesome opening jam. Just made my day.
It seems that (some) musicians have preconceived ideas about how professional musicians live and work. Tom's experience is pure gold, yet some listeners can't see that. Thank you for inviting us into your life.
Thanks, Uncle Larry. The show was great when it started. It's great now. I look forward to new episodes. Keep it up, please.
This brilliant playing reminds me of an animated film I watched as a kid called “Heavy Metal”. So great Tom.
Philosopher sage creator and seer..time for a beer..thanks for the discourse..i couldnt agree more man
If you can really appreciate what you have, while you have it, you're ahead of the curve.
Totally agree about the Phone! I
Did 2 days of sessions this week and left my phone in my backpack.. checked it once at lunch and that was it… so much more relaxing.
Cellphones = Little Black Mirrors. We love ya Uncle Larry! I have to say that is a joy being in a community of stellar musicians. Music shouldn't be a D**k measuring contest. You've done a damn good job weeding the garden!
thanks bro....the air around here is sooo much nicer once i decided to block all the douchebags.
A true leader knows when to follow, and when to take the wheel-TB do!
There's so much to unpack in this video lmao. This definitely made my night.
Great stuff Tom!!!! Thank you!
Definitely right about the studio. You think you're good until you start doing it. A real eye opener for me.
There are many great guitarits on you tube but just a few get
good feeling like you.
