What is it like to be cut off from your faith and your family? The Amish: Shunned follows seven people who have chosen to leave their closed and tightly-knit communities for the outside world, knowing they can never return. Each has paid deeply for their decision. Estranged from loved ones, these former Amish find themselves struggling to make their way in modern America.
"When we lose obedience, we lose the church. Amen." What is shunning? 2012's The Amish only touched on the practice, but this follow up documentary explores shunning more deeply, interviewing both current and former Amish people.

Wow. these people do it differently than we did. My family left the Amish 7 years ago and we didn't escape by night. Everyone in the community knew we were going to leave. They even came and helped us load the truck (we moved 100 miles--160 km--away).

In all my 65+ years of being around the Amish, I have never known them to be abusive or cruel to anyone. They've consistently been humble, non-confrontional, amenable, honest in everything, hard working and willing to help when asked. Over the years, I've developed a great respect for them and genuinely wish them the very best.

you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. And with the Amish, there are a lot of closed doors to hide what goes on. They use fear to control their group/families. They have no problem beating their kids or girls who refuse to marry some random guy. I grew up next to a family that left their group. The woman left in at night with her kids while her husband was at some type of outing overnight. She had to make a plan almost a year ahead of time, so she didn't get caught or there would have been hell to pay. The Amish can be just a mean and cruel as any group of people, they use their religion as an excuse to get away with it

The Amish are not a cult. They try to live by Bible standards and principles. Shunning is intended to make the one who is in opposition to the Bible teachings through their conduct examine their beliefs and repent if they decide to return to their faith. It’s a loving provision, not a punishment. They acknowledge that each of us has a choice. Incidentally, I’m not Amish, and I’ve never met an Amish person. I simply respect their right to worship in the way they believe is the truth.

While this accurately describes what might happen in some Amish settings when someone leaves, it is far far from the truth for lots of other Amish settings. I , for one, left an Amish church and still have great friendships and connections there. They would not even dream of shunning me. Without question, they are brothers in the Lord and true followers of Jesus. I say this only to be fair to the fact that there is great diversity among those who are considered Amish.

You are so right, Jeriah. I too left my Amish community, and my experience was very similar to yours. I was shunned for only two years, but even then some of the Amish did not observe it. 1 Corinthians 5:9 In my letter I wrote you to stop keeping company with sexually immoral people, 10 not meaning entirely with the sexually immoral people of this world or the greedy people or extortioners or idolaters. Otherwise, you would actually have to get out of the world. 11 But now I am writing you to stop keeping company with anyone called a brother who is sexually immoral or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. 12 For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Do you not judge those inside, 13 while God judges those outside? “Remove the wicked person from among yourselves.”

    • @Dachdogoriginal
      @Dachdogoriginal 4 роки тому +6

@@jennawinkelman8260this seems to be difficult to understand. It seems so harsh. Everyone says God is LOVE. He would never do that. But we must remember something. Yes God is LOVE. But he is a Heavenly Father. He disciplines his children. With a Godly discipline. He has righteous standards. We have free will. We can decide to do what we want. But if we want to be a friend, a child of God, then we have to meet his Godly standards, and we have to do his will, his way. But that is not harsh. It is a protection. He explains his thinking well with a few bible verses. Paul wrote the above because a man in the congregation had a sexual relationship with his father's wife, his step mother. That was a gross sin. God is holy or clean and righteous. And he says we must be holy because he is holy. So if sin is being carried out within the congregation and nothing is done, it becomes an acceptable standard for all. Then we are away from God and his active force, his holy spirit, will not be working within the congregation and they will be disapproved. Sin means missing the mark of God's standards. We carry sin, or imperfection. We fail many times. This is one kind of sin. The other is deliberate sin. Lying, sexual immorality, stealing, murder, doing drugs, etc. That is purposeful. If we remain in that practice and no discipline is taken, the whole congregation begins to practice it or permit it. Which in God's eyes is the same thing. To keep the congregation spiritually clean discipline needs to be administered. That would be, in the true congregation, a measure to readjust by spiritual counseling and aid to recover, then to turn around and sin no more. If one does not repent, but has a rebellious attitude and would continue in this course, they need to be socially removed from the congregation. They could continue to come to meetings for instruction and to try to regain their friendship with God and the Congregation. But NO ONE should speak with them. They are unclean and disapproved. We can move that one to repent. And we want them to recover. We do not want to weaken or block God's discipline by continuing to talk and visit with them. Discipline that is serious should sting and help the spiritually sick one to wake up to where they stand with God. They still would have access to the older men for spiritual help if they had a softened attitude. But it is not to return them right away. In the second letter to the Corinthians Paul said after it had been about a year, to receive the man that was wicked because he had repented and he said he should not be swallowed up my sadness. Once the discipline had worked and evidence was strongly visible, then we want to recieve the brother again and warmly encourage him to continue to be refined. The older men would inform the congregation. So, he had a spiritual TIME OUT. He learned his lesson. All things should be to God's standard. Not traditions of men which some of this documentary showed. But that is not for me to judge. We do not judge someone's salvation, but we must judge those inside about their actions. Sin needs to be removed and corrected. 1 colossians 1:21-23.
2 Thessalonians 1:6 highlights God may make tribulation for those that make tribulation for his righteous people. He is very protective over his true congregation. Hebrews 12:11 "True, no discipline seems for the present to be joyous, but it is painful; yet afterward, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

The odds that a Marriage will last, are just about to the point where it's not even worth the thought!

Some not all people who leave the church are systematically isolated by church community for years even before they leave the church because they are different or strange.Social isolation can be the worst experience ever. Then when you leave you get demonized to the point that's unbearable. You are told that you are going to burn in hell and they take pleasure in putting guilt on you in any way possible. When you are finally outside the church you have to start building a life for yourself with no GED. or college credentials and a lot of times no money. Most people who leave the church have a hard time picking up on non Amish social skills leaves them with very few options in the workplace. The only work they know is manual labor.

They have a lot more technology than they used to(in some communities, more than your average person ) (which is not necessarily a good thing in my opinion )and are allowed to finish high school at home if they want to. The shunning thing varies from home to home so don't judge all from one.Are they perfect? No,but neither is anyone else. I don't agree with them on everything but over all they are good people. Outstanding in some areas, normal in most areas, have their downfalls in some areas, like everyone else....so don't judge them all by a few.

I just love how these Amish leaders say that they are Christians, but they don’t exhibit Christ-Like behaviour. Overall, authentic, genuine, & factual Christianity, teaches us about LOVE, GRACE, & FORGIVENESS. Christ & The Bible teaches us that God does love us all, but He also gave us Free-Will. He does not want to force us to believe in him, but rather requires us to choose to believe & to exhibit FAITH. Faith requires us to believe in something, despite the fact that there may not be any scientific evidence proving things to exist. Faith in Christianity requires believing in God’s Grace, His promises, & trusting & relying on God to always know what is best for us.
One of the BEST & most important point of Christianity, tells us that it is NOT THE PEOPLE who judge our lifestyles, morality, & beliefs. ONLY CHRIST IS CAPABLE OF MAKING JUDGEMENTS OF US - NOT BISHIP, COUNSEL OF ELDERS, MINISTERS, PASTORS, ETC. True Christianity & Christian Leaders support & help us to grow our relationships with God. They help us to make our own decisions, instead of setting rules & giving orders. They also guide us through our lives, helping up to live a Christ-Centred life. The Leaders are always there to help us by making suggestions, & providing us with wisdom & information to help us to make decisions & become better people.
Alternatively, certain Sects & Groups of Christianity such as the Amish, have a hierarchical Society upon which each person has a Place/Niche The people (usually men) at the top, are the ones who are extremely CONTROLLING & JUDGMENTAL. THEY HAVE POWER OVER THE REST OF THE PEOPLE. THEY feel as if they have the POWER to pull families apart, decide how all of the people must dress & behave, to “SHUN” family members, often causing permanent damage to peoples’ mental & physical health, + many more horrific consequences.
I strongly believe that the Amish are a CULT. I am now going to illustrate the main Characteristics of a cult, as stated by a doctor from Harvard who explains below:
“What makes a Cult, A CULT????”
Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, who once taught at Harvard Medical School, wrote a paper titled Cult Formation in the early 1980s. He delineated three primary characteristics, which are the most common features shared by destructive cults.
    1. A charismatic leader, who increasingly becomes an object of worship as the general principles that may have originally sustained the group lose power. That is a living leader, who has no meaningful accountability and becomes the single most defining element of the group and its source of power and authority.
    2. A process [of indoctrination or education is in use that can be seen as] coercive persuasion or thought reform [commonly called "brainwashing"].
The culmination of this process can be seen by members of the group often doing things that are not in their own best interest, but consistently in the best interest of the group and its leader.
Lifton's seminal book Thought Reform and Psychology of Totalism explains this process in considerable detail.
    3. Economic, sexual, and other exploitation of group members by the leader and the ruling coterie.
The destructiveness of groups called cults varies by degree, from labour violations, child abuse, medical neglect to, in some extreme and isolated situations, calls for violence or mass suicide.
Some groups that were once seen as "cults" have historically evolved to become generally regarded as religions. Power devolved from a single leader to a broader church government and such groups ceased to be seen as simply personality-driven and defined by a single individual. For example the Seventh-day Adventists, once led by Ellen White, or the Mormons church founded by Joseph Smith.
Some groups may not fit the definition of a cult, but may pose potential risks for participants. Here are 10 warning signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader.
    • Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
    • No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
    • No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement.
    • Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
    • There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
    • Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
    • There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader.
    • Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
    • The group/leader is always right.
    • The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.

What is missing from your statement is the STRONG pressure to join the church and accept the articles of faith which are the rules. And as long as nothing unusual comes up it may be completely possible to live this lifestyle. They have a very good support network as long as you comply. But if you don’t, or decide you can’t live that way any longer it is almost unbearable to live and few who are baptized young have ever really anticipated what it really could be like,

I'd like to point out that shunning does not just happen among religious sects, but in everyday life as well. It can be used in different ways, but primarily as a form of bullying - or what some call "silent bullying." And much of it happens in schools. It is NOT OK, and I am shocked that when I put in "shunning" in basic UA-cam search, NOTHING came up about any shunning other than "secondary" shunning, like between religious sects, etc. This real life occurrence effects many people, and I hope more light will be shed on this in the future.

Until the congregation votes to let them back in. There's shunnings that are set at 6 weeks or 10 weeks too and afterwards they don't need to be voted back in

Judging people for being human is plain cruel and certainly not in line with the teachings of Christ. There has never been and never will be a person capable of fairly judging another person on this earth. That's God's job, not ours. I think the Amish have many good things in their lifestyle, but some of their practices are just not right.

Henry B sadly sneaking her back would be Avery traumatic experience for her and she wouldn’t be at all welcome and that would only serve to traumatize her all over again. While many men fantasize that a bride from an Amish background would be a Grand prize ( virgin, submissive, pure in heart and last but not least most certainly a wonderful cook, they do not realize what baggage and trauma “ ex Amish” carry. They are shunned and excommunicated forbidden to see their family. You would not want to have that material for a life partner. You would likely never be able to resolve it for them.

"When we lose obedience, we lose the church." - This is also how Jehovah's Witnesses operate. They also use shunning as a weapon.
