The reason Why I left the Amish Lifestyle Behind

  • I grew up in the Middlefield Ohio Amish settlement in an old older Amish church. I left the Amish lifestyle due to their religion. When I compared it to the teachings of the Bible, I found that the Amish culture does not teach or believe what the Bible teaches, and I decided to leave the Amish community. Growing up, I had a lot of questions about our lifestyle, and I thought I'll get answers when I was ready to get baptised. But I was wrong because when the time came, I was told to do what everyone else in the community does and not to question. I started to realize that the Amish members themselves don't understand their religion, and many things in the Bible they take out of context. It was a very confusing time of my life, but after searching and reading for myself, I found the answers to my questions, and I knew I couldn't continue living the Amish life. My family tried their hardest to keep me from leaving, but I am so glad that did.

What a brave and level headed young woman. How could any parent turn their back on such a prize. She didn't leave the faith, she found the faith.

So many people never grasp the difference between a religion and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter what church or group we become associated with, it remains important to continually check what is being preached and taught against the Bible, God’s Word. If they do not agree, we are to always go with God’s Word as our authority. Thank you for your bravery in rejecting false reaching, even to the point of being disinherited, and thank you for being brave enough to share that in a loving way with all of us. May God continue to guide and strengthen you in this lifelong journey. I pray you will be able and willing to continue to share this journey with us.

Amen! Baptism doesn't equal salvation. You've got to go by the Bible. The Bible speaks of Christians needing to be ready to have an answer when someone comes to them.

One great place to begin would be what the top 5,000 denominations and “non-denominations” believe, for example, compared to each other while all claiming to be based only on the Bible. Any capable theologian could very likely write the same book you are writing about your church or any other. None are perfect and, worse, all are divided from one another in direct contradiction to what Jesus pleaded for in prayer.

I highly respect you. As a former pastor, I was frustrated by the majority of Christians I knew who blindly followed whatever their pastor taught, seldom if ever actually doing what you did, and looking into Scripture to see if that pastor was teaching God's word. Also they were not studying and thinking to see why the ideologies modern society is indoctrinating us with are wrong, according to the Lord. I also respect you because obviously Jesus is more important to you than anything else. Because of your faith in Him, sadly you lost your family.

I have read many things about the Amish and could never understand some of their very strict beliefs. I think maybe your parents said some of those horrible things our of fear. It was like they were losing you and wanted to control you by those words. I give you a lot of credit for following your own heart and what the Lord lead you to do. You are now a part of the Lord's family and you will find a lot of courage, encouragement with those who truly love you in Him.

They (Amish bishops and elders) didn’t have the answers for you because they want their people to be in the dark and just follow what they’re being told. That’s why they don’t want you researching and studying the Bible on your own. They KNOW their lies will be brought out if that happens. Bless you for finding the truth and leaving the cult.

You are such a brave, young lady for standing up for your beliefs! I commend you for that. I live in Southern Ohio where there are a lot of Amish people and even had a young Amish couple that lived right across the road from me and the man left the Amish for reason's unknown to me, but the lady is still Amish, dresses Amish and dress her 2 children as Amish. I have spoken to them a few times and always enjoyed talking to them, they were very nice people. But sadly, they bought new property and moved a few miles away. I miss seeing them too! I am a Christian myself and I go to a small, country Baptist church here and there is one lady that has left the Amish that goes to our church too. I have found that many of the younger Amish people leave due to the Amish not teaching the true Word of God and I had always thought that was one thing that they stressed very strongly, but I guess I was wrong. I do respect the Amish; they are a very hard-working group of people. But I do understand people leaving because they want a closer relationship with Jesus. I will be looking for more of your videos and thank you for posting this!

I really enjoyed your video. New subscriber here. I grew up in the Jehovah Witness cult for 34 years of my life. I was baptized at 16. I was not disfellowshiped when I left. I just walked away. I had to move 1500 miles away to break away fully. They will hound you if you don't. As JWS, we were told to only marry within the JW religion. We were told not to have friends outside of our organization, and we mainly work with people who are only JWS. With the limited outside influences, we are forced to associate with our own. If we leave the JWS we too are told Satan has a hold on us. And if we leave, we don't have a community that will be there for us. We are sure to fail!! That is the fear they put into all of us. I have not talked to my mother in 13 years. She has never met her grandson, sadly. Her choice. All of my so called friend who said they love you, I have learned it's ONLY CONDITIONAL LOVE. If that's the god they worship, I want nothing to do with it. I did my own research and found MANY of their teachings is man-made based and definitely not the way Jesus example showed. Thank you for sharing your discovery, and I look forward to seeing more.

As a young EMT, I responded to an MVA with a JW family, although we didn't know that. The father was dead at the scene and one teenage child died the next day. The mother, who had not gone on the trip, sued because the hospital gave her child a blood transfusion trying to save her life. She lost because our state has an implied consent law. Why can't they have blood transfusions?

I'm so glad you came to know the Lord Jesus Christ! I grew up in the Wayne County near Holmes county area. Thankfully I grew up in a Baptist home although at the time even our church was very strict (no pants for girls, make up, movies, alcohol, dancing, card games etc.). I still attend a Baptist church just not as strict but it is not the church that saves anyone. Thankfully I understand now that being a Christian is believing in God's word and truths and promises. Salvation is not works based but Faith Based. When we are saved we will want to do good works for Christ as a witness of Him. In all things we are to Glorify Him. I will pray that God continues to give you boldness to speak his name in love and that your family will read God's Word and want to receive God's free gift of salvation.

Beautiful testimony. I’m so sorry that your family broke fellowship with you, but praise the Lord that He gave you a wonderful husband! My husband and I attend a fellowship that was started by ex-Amish. We’ve been there for about a year now and have learned so much. The emphasis of starting the fellowship was to reach out to local Amish youth. It is really growing now though and there are several “English” families now too. It’s a good mix. God bless you! 😊

Good for you to be true to yourself. I had a similar journey away from Catholicism - asking questions that no one could answer, fighting against the resistance of my family, but ultimately paving my own path. I’m 47 now and they can’t control me anymore, but the damage is done and we just have to make peace with it.

I commend you, Martha, for letting God work peace into your attitude and not bitterness for the thongs you found didnt agree with Gods word. Checking all teachings everywhere with whatthe word of God says is vital! Keep doing that, sister! May God bless you in your walk with him to help others understand and gain a burden to be a light to the Amish in any way possible.
Currently my husband and i sell feed so a few Amish in Seymour, mo and we have the scripture of John 1:12 on our bags in hopes that some will see Gods true words and know they must be HIS child to have eternal lifd, not follow a religion. The Amish ways are definately to be respected and they do have such good values in many areas. Praying more will gain the right motives for keeping those values.
Pray for us Englishers who want to be a witness to them to have the right ways of going about doing so with sharing Gods truth!
I look forward to more videos you make. I would like to glean from your insite to be able to relate better to help disciple any that come out of Amish.

I love that you put a Scripure verse on your feed bags! 😃
I think the best way to be a witness to Amish people is to be kind to them. Scripture verses are always great! But they take most verses out of context, and they are told what to believe in the Amish church, so most times, they don't really know what the Scripture truly means. It's hard to explain the mindset of a person who has been Amish all their life.
As far as how to disciple someone who has left the Amish. A lot of them leave not really knowing the truth about what the Bible teaches. I never could've left with peace in my heart, without Jesus! And my heart goes out to those who leave and haven't found Him yet. If I would meet someone who has just left the Amish community and had questions, the first thing I would ask them is if they are aware that the Amish do not teach what the Bible teaches. And I'd tell them if they are interested, I'd love to give them resources to search on their own, and a study Bible, and letting them know that I am willing to help them find Biblical answers.

I am not Amish but I grew up around Amish people and in my opinion it is a cult because you get shunned and are not accepted by the community/family if you leave. Although leaving is very hard for Amish people - i am so glad when people leave the Amish. 🙂💟😊

My wife was brought up in a Mormon offshoot known as The Community of Christ. The branch she belonged to is known as The Restorationist Branch. Their teachings emphasize a very austere interpretation of Scripture that penalizes people for experiencing anything joyful or good in this life, in favor of eternal joy in the Kingdom. Their teachings are deeply flawed, and their society is very cultish. As soon as she was old enough to do so, she got out. She won't go anywhere near them anymore, and has a general level of antipathy for anything involving the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, Jr., and any flavor of Mormonism. I'm glad to see you got out when you did. I'd never known any of this about the Amish, and now I feel for them. To be so locked in human tradition that one doesn't even realize that they've ceased following Jesus must be heartbreaking. My wife and I now practice Messianic Judaism, and I spend a great deal of time studying Jesus' teachings from a Jewish perspective. The more I learn, the more I realize that I don't yet know enough. Keep studying, keep learning, and keep chasing after the Lord.

you blessed girl to get away from the wrong mindset. to literally escape through the blood of Jesus Christ, how He cares for us and shows us compassion. I'm also from Ohio, near there but I'm so glad to know that God saves out of that! Keep going! Don't give up. I'm not Amish but had trouble w my parents and learned that God was my Father - adopted into His family.
