It’s mud from ocean so basically it’s just bacteria that lowers nitrates. No different than bacteria in a bottle. But to me the biggest benefit is it slowly releases trace elements. That’s very nice for coral to have slow release if you’re using kalkwasser it’s perfect. If you’re using something like all for reef then you might not need the mud as it has trace already. Or if you dose trace you might not need the mud either.
In order for the mud to remove nitrates you should have kept it in the tray so that it is 1-2 inches deep and will remove nitrates also to make it easier to replace it just lift the tray and that’s it.

Owning a reef may just be one of the most awesome hobbies out there. We know more about space than we do our oceans. I’ll just leave this here.
