- This video is a step by step instruction on how I replace the starter on Evo and Twin Cam Softail Models. I also show how to reseal the inner primary as a bonus. Twin Cam models may be slightly different, but the basic procedure remains the same.

I returned to this video MANY MANY times as I was replacing my starter. Thanks for all your effort in making it
Thank you. I am glad it helped you!
I am actually a mechanic but this is my first HD,,I want you to know this video is highly appreciated and educational it made the job fast and easy, I unhooked the hoses from the tank because the pipes cleared,,thanks again
Glad it helped
Perfect video for what i was looking for. How to replace the starter. With a plus primary case change/leak fix.
Thank you
I’ve been a Harley tech for 26 years and the evo is what I cut my teeth on. There is a easier way to remove the starter. Remove the battery for access to the positive cabe terminal on the starter.rive outer primary cover and jacksfaft as needed. I usually drop the rear wheel and then remove the inner mud flap that holds a circuit breaker in place, loosen the oil tank , unbolt the starter and remove it towards the back wheel was, prying up on the oil tank with a wood doweling needed.
Thanks for the tip!
Why do we have to remove the entire clutch assembly?
@@ricardobooker1704 you don’t have to remove the clutch.
I have a question not pertaining to the starter, I have a 1990 Electraglide, I cannot find neutral with the engine running shut it off and it drops in like butter. I replaced the cable and pulled and cleaned the clutch plates it has the extra special center plate. What else should I do.
@@ricardobooker1704 whats idle speed once warmed up? Your transmission is a constant mesh so in order to shift your transmission speed needs to match engine speed, so if your idle is too low it would be hard to find neutral. So one thing you can try is putting your toe under the shifter with light upward pressure and give the engine a small rev and as the rpm’s drop it should pop in neutral.
I love your videos this particular one is so informative, I don’t own a Eve but still I learn a bunch. Thank you.
Thanks for the support. The process is just about the same for the twin cam models. Although, he oil lines and oil tank mounts are differnt

I just did my 94' heritage. Did not have to remove oil tank. Just unbolted it and lifted up and forward. Gave me the clearance to remove the starter bolts and pull the starter. As far as the exhaust, depends on the type of exhaust.
Great advise
Thankyou for this . Please can you put a link to where I can get those special tools you used
Its the small thing that make a good mechanic. GJ.
Thank you
Great information. I'm removing my transmission case. And this helped alot on primary area..
Glad it helped
Do you happen to have a video on a newer twin cam softail? I'm a tech myself but a video like this is helpful. I have a starter that barely turns the engine over after sitting for the winter. Im gonna assume it might be just corrosion build up, but still need to get to the starter.
Sorry, I don’t have a video on a newer starter yet. But I will video it as soon as I do
Good video. Thank you for taking the time.
Your welcome. Thank you for watching
Nice video ! Well explained! I bought a 94 flstc with 6548 miles , I think this is a very commun issue with this bikes , I got 3 metric bikes with a lot of mileage no issues , and this beautiful machine with so low miles, the starting system its a joke! 1st I replaced the silonoid, new battery ran good for a few days, now I got a grinding sound.. I was searching and the starter clutch is the next part to be replace. I better remove that eom junk starter and replace it with an aftermarket one? Do I have to dismount the clutch at all?.
Thank you so much for you help
Andres.
Removing the jack shaft is a lot easier with the clutch removed, but not 100% necessary. The grinding sound is usually from damage to the jack shaft and ring gear. That repair requires clutch disassembly. Harley starters are usually pretty good. They just require maintenance from time to time. Same as any aftermarket starter will.
Question! I got an aftermarket starter motor, do I need a new gasket?
Do you have to remove the clutch to get the jackshaft out? Or can you do the replacement without going that far?
You don’t have to. I just find it so much easier to remove the clutch.
Great video instruction. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice. I’m working on the same model evo. I have a stuck starter bolt and it’s all messed up. I tried to grind down the head of the bolt to be able to remove it some pliers or screwdriver. But no lucky!! Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance
I maybe able to help. I just need some more information. Is it the starter mounting bolts? Did you grind the head off and remove the starter?
If it is the starter mounting bolt, I would remove the inner primary.
If the inner primary is off, there are a few methods I would use to remove a broken bolt. Heat is your friend.
You may can try using an ez out. Just drill all the way through the bolt. And heat up the case.
If you have a welder, you can weld a nut to the broken bolt. This has gotten me out of a jam a few times.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the question.
@@empcycleworks yes it’s one of the starter mounting bolts I tried to grind the head off of it. I might try and easy out. I would still be able to get to the other side of the bolt if I remove the inner primary?
Nice video, never goes as smooth as this. But its a nice walkthrough to encourage guys to either pay to get it done..Or what it takes based off your confidence level. lol
Thank you
I've owned over fifteen motorcycles, none of which we're a harley, my dream bike was a heritage.Soft air classic, which I just got adds in ninety seven, i've been a car in truck mechanic for over forty years, and i'm glad to say that I do not know anything about a harley, i need someone to follow, and if I can figure out how to do it, it's probably going to be you, i think I have a starter issue and go figure. The first video I see is you doing a starter on my bike,
Thank you.
FYI - you don’t need completely remove the oil tank or clutch to replace the starter. I just find it easier with those parts out of the way.
I have a 1996 Custom Softail.. I am having a hard time taking off my oil tank! The rear bolt on my bike has the studs are vertical and my tank does not have enough room to bring it up over the stud due because of the from. very tight area to remove. Asking for your advise? Thank you
You should be able to get the starter out with fully removing the oil tank.
Great vid, think I'm going to leave to a shop!
Do u know about the inner workings of this transmission, I have a question 🤔 on what may be wrong with mine, I spun the clutch nut the wrong way, the shaft rod came out of the middle on the output shaft and the nut and everything spins both ways now any idea what may have broke
Wish you would've added a bit more on all the gears that went on the output shaft to starter all the way till the small bolt that goes thru into starter
I’ll make sure make next video describes it better. Thanks for watching
I have an intermittent gear sound every now and then from my 2000 Heritage Springer that has been described here. Can you give me an estimate of how much the labor alone would be to replace the starter at an indy shop? If it turns out it is just the jack shaft and the ring gear that needs replacing, about how much is the cost? Just a ball park figure. Thx
3 to 5 hours depending what n what’s wrong
Hey there great video!
is it really necessary to remove the primary cover, or could you just pull out the starter from the back? with the gear attached?
You have to pull the outer cover to disconnect the gear from the atarter
@@empcycleworks thanks!
Do you have to remove the clutch or can you leave it on? I’m waiting on my new jack shaft to put on but I know it came out without taking my clutch off. Nice video bro thanks
You can get it back in without removing the clutch. I just find it easier with it off
Hello. Thanks for the great video. If anyone sees this and wouldn't mind replying I am still unsure if I need to remove inner primary.??? Bought started, pulled oil tank and then had rude awakening that I couldn't just pull it out 🤔. Hoping the inner came off in this video due to seal replacement. Thanks in advance of any helpful replies. I have been collecting parts and tools to tackle this baby. 🤞😆
You don’t need to remove the inner to replace the starter. Or the starter seal.
How long did that job take?
After viewing this highly informative video I realized why three of my motorcycle riding friends bikes don't run , two out my riding friends, bikes run but they have to roll out off and one of my friends bikes starts, and runs great. Go figure
What grease do you use on the oring between primary and crank case sorry first time pulling inner primary
I use a general purpose or wheel bearing grease.
I'm getting a grinding and clanging when I go to start my 97 flstc, I txd the last shop that worked on this problem after a quick back and forth now I'm hearing crickets?!
Just wanted to say the only thing that could maybe be more helpful is that you do more close-ups and show more detail as to where exactly the bolts are and all that kind of stuff besides that really good informative video brother
Thank you for the comment. I'm getting better. But your right, I need to focus more on the details.
I have a 96 wideglide is it necessary to take the clutches, and drain motor oil and all you did just to replace sterter?
I find it easier to remove the clutch. But you don’t have to
Most starters are removed for solenoid contact replacement. If you convert to the All Balls one piece starter jack shaft you will never have to pull a clutch hub again. That's because the AB jack shaft does not use the intermediate bushing the multi-piece stock jack shaft requires. This GREATLY speeds future starter removals for solenoid CONTACT REPLACEMENT which on these Denso OSGR Light Duty starters is easy and cheap since millions are used on cars and trucks. (Get the kits with the seals etc. They're about 20 bucks.) It's also a very good idea to take advantage of the Denso coaxial solenoid design and install a pushbutton end cap. Those bypass the entire starter control system including the solenoid windings. If you forget to install that simple end cover and can't start your bike, remove the end cover then use a screwdriver to push the solenoid core inwards (BE SURE your bike is in neutral).
Great information! Thank you
Super erklärt, wie sich das gehört.TOP!!!
Thanks
Great communication! We’ll appreciate
Thank you very much
Just to nit-pic, there is a Harley service manual specified pattern for installing the outer primary cover bolts.😀
Hi I was hopping you could help me, I recently did a cam swap on my 2012 Ultra 103 tween cam, I went in from the top end because I wanted to check the breathers, in the process I mixed up the pushrods and I don’t know where they supposed to be, the manual does not specifies. I have a dark color one that is longer than a light color one. Can you help?
Sure, the longer ones are for the exhaust pushrods.
The exhaust lifters are toward the outside of the motor, toward cam cover
@@empcycleworks thanks a million for taking the time, I really appreciate it.
What size is the motor and clutch nut sir?
Bro really good video. Questions will this be same gig on 2004 softball duces.?
Thank you. There are some differences. There is a motor mount in between the motor and the oil pan on the 2004 that needs to be removed. But, its mostly the same.
Could you just take out the starter without changing the gear attachment to the clutch ?
Yes. You can remove the starter without removing the ring gear.
If you are replacing the jack shaft I would recommend replacing the ring gear
@@empcycleworks ok to clarify, you can replace starter without removing the primary cover and clutch and assembly?
@@brandonjones152 did you find out the answer to this? Im in need of removing my starter
Same question
Is it required to remove the primary chain?
It’s not required. I just find it easier
I replaced many starters on softails and not once have I had to remove the oil tank.
Thanks for the comment. I find it easier to remove the oil tank.
Why did you pull the primary drive just to remove the starter? I have never had to remove the primary drive on any soft-tail, just the cover.
I find it easier to get the jack shaft out. Thanks for the comment
It just seems like more work parts and time I don't want to pass onto my costumers.. Turning a 2.5 hour job into 5. just my opinion I've done a shit pot of soft-tail starters. From what I've seen, you guys do top notch work, the inner primary just seemed out of the normal.
Keep up the good work.@@empcycleworks
Nice video clean thanks !!!!!
Thank you
Great job
Thanks
Half of my removal was easy - broken shift pawl. Stuck in 2nd 😅!
Nice
Good job !
Thanks!
I wasn't aware I need to remove the complete header from the engine, I just removed the chrome cover on the back pipe and that seemed to work, although it was a tight squeeze !!!
Depends on the exhaust. Also, I like to get as much out of the way to make the job as easy as possible.
@@empcycleworks well I'm watching this video for the 2nd time trying to understand the jack shaft a little more in depth, its really pissing me off that the bolt isn't threading into the end of the starter shaft as if it is to short although I now when done correctly it fits just fine, so I did something wrong, somewhere ! uggg ! the truth is I'm finding out I ain't got a brain that's fully functional anymore, that is the depth and width of my struggle !!!n LOL
Looking at the rust on the old starter it looks like the owner washes the bike with soap and water. I don't get my bikes wet if I can help it. Put it up on the lift and start wiping it off instead of soaking it in water....But that's just me. Good video, Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. I agree, I dont like washing my bikes with soap and water. This bike was actually flooded with about 2 1/2 feet of water. Luckily the Starter is the only component that got damaged.
Hi can you just replace the bendix on the fat boy 2008
Yes you can.
Thanks!
Thank you!
You can get your bolt and jack shaft off with out removing the clutch and compensator l do it all the time
I know, I just think it’s easier to pull the clutch out
I have the exact same bike, paint scheme and all
Why are you removing the clutch system
I like to remove the jack shaft and inspect it. Removing the clutch makes that easier.
Crucial note would be to tell people to drain the primary first
Good point
Nice
I have them same bags!
Nice
No need to put out oil tank...I did it like that...
I find it easier to pull it. But you are right
Fuck, yeah brother
Ive had 7 Harleys. Ive changed starters on all of them, but this is just stupid. 2004 FXST, I've never had to remove this much shit to change a starter. I think this bike hates me anyway, i have it fir sale and every time i ride it something else breaks. Really. Since I've had it for sale, ive had to replace the battery, fuel pump, sending unit, front tire, battery, and front brakes. Then the starter took a shit. Either it doesn't want to leave, or it just doesn't like me.
You can get away with not removing the oils tank and the clutch. I just find it easier to do it this way
@@empcycleworks I couldn't get to the bolts or the electrical on mine without removing the oil tank. And I left the primary intact. I might have to wiggle it a little but the new starter will go in without removing anything else. But I had to pull the old starter out and measure it before ordering a new one so the bike is going to sit there like that for a few days. Just a PITA. I had 2 Sportsters that were a piece of cake. My 88 FLHTCUI was pretty easy too. This one is just stupid.
Well F.M.R.B.T.A.C.F, that's allot of work to change a starter .
You don’t necessarily have to pull the oil tank and the clutch. I just find it easier. Thanks for watching
Did he say 6/8”?? That’s 3/4” 🤦♂️
What a dummy
Wow, no clue an Evo was such a shit show to change a starter. My 2000 electraglide Ultra (FLHTCUI) was much simpler. Still had to pull primary cover to access center starter bolt on drive gear. But then it was just a matter of a bracket from the other side and 2 huge allen bolts and of course the chrome cover on the back of the starter and battery cable. Simple by comparison.
You don’t have to remove the oil tank or clutch. I just find it easier.
Seriously?!?! All that had to be removed from the primary? Just to change the starter? Omg.
You can do it without pulling the clutch and completely removing the oil tank. I just find it easier to remove it.
What your doing wrong...
Circuit Breaker???? I'm Out!!
Thanks for the comment. You don’t like circuit breakers?
@@empcycleworks Show me the circuit breaker on a Nippendeso starter
I didn't see you change out the coupler ?
