GSG Induction - The Failed Pricing Games of '78

- As we wrap up The Price Is Wrong month for the last time, Robert Seidelman takes a look at Shower Game, Finish Line and Telephone game. These were three pricing games that were long considered to be lost to the current generation because the shows had furs given away so they couldn't be reran. That is until Wink Martindale's UA-cam Channel put up the rarities. And after seeing them, we hope they would have stayed hidden.
No challenge to ownership is implied. The clips are used for review purposes.

Someone recently posted a TPIR show featuring a winning playing of "Finish Line". There were no furs offered on that show that would've prevented a GSN airing. The show at the time was fairly new in its hour-long format and they were desperate to create new games. Most of them weren't thought out enough. Thus, all were retired, except Take Two and Punch-a-Bunch. Punchy originally had much more complicated rules that needed simplification.
The survivors: Take Two and Punch-A-Bunch.
In TV Trope speak, the Shower Game's a case of Germans Love Hasselhoff. It's been on Le Juste Prix (French TPiR) since the mid-late 90s, maybe even longer.
To quote Double D, "It appears annoyance doesn't cross cultural boundaries."
Shower Game was sorta revised today as "Gas Money". Pick 5 prices avoid the pink car slip and get money. Very similar of game playing.
I'd say no. A money-or-car mechanic versus a money-and-car mechanic is enough to dispel the similarity.
Shower Game was basically Five Price Tags with an extra price tag and showers. Wasn't much to it.
Finish Line was doomed for retirement. Bob Barker once said in an interview that he disliked Finish Line because he hated horse racing.
Telephone Game WAS lame. It was basically Triple Prices with a tacked on grocery game in the beginning.
As soon as you mentioned the metal heads, I knew what clip was about to appear.
I have requested Wink Martindale to upload the full episodes with these failed games he posted previously.
The real reason why Finish Line was retired is because it malfunctioned constantly, according The Price is Right Wikia and Golden-Road.net.
Finish Line was a blatant ripoff on the original pricing game Give or Keep.
The episode posted on UA-cam with Finish Line did show that scoreboard was not syncing correctly with the horse.
@@armorybrunotjr.3204 If it was intented to replace Give or Keep, then I'd wager than being a ripoff wouldn't matter.
@@michaelj.kerkau1625 The word is "intended". The ordeal was the producers wanted to take "Give or Keep" out of the rotation, so
apparently this is why they created "Finish Line", but after this pricing
game failed due to consistent malfunctions, the game was simply
retired, and "Give or Keep" stayed.
You should do an episode on that episode of TPR where there were 2 people who ran down and went directly on stage, 2 people who weren't paying attention during contestants' row and thought they had won when they didn't, and one person who bid something like $850, followed by a bid of $849 by the next person. Geniuses...
Shower game was truly silly!
Keep/give, finish line and hurdles should be brought back for the Drew Carey era.
Only if, for the latter two, game design is better to avoid malfunctions (computerization, perhaps).
They should also bring back "On The Nose"
I still think the telephone game should be given another chance. It would look more up to date if the board were a giant smartphone!
MikeTeaveeJr exactly. It should look like a giant iPhone X.
Think Fast beat them to the punch in ‘89
The Telephone Game might have been bad. But its successor, The Phone Home Game, was a lot better.
The only issue with the Phone Home Game was that it took some time to do, let alone they had to do it the first half as they had to keep the home viewer on hold. I heard even in one game that the caller read off the wrong list and thus they had to give the win to the contestant.
Eminem200183 E.T. phone home!!
How can you have a segment called The Price is Wrong Month and not have the scene where Adam Sander says "The price is wrong bitch".
I'm already breaking enough copyright as it is.
Look it up. It was Sander.
Yup, It was Adam Sandler who said it and not Barker.
The Price is Wrong!
Telephone Game wasn't that bad...
Agreed. Clumsy, yes. Terrible? Nah. If anything, I compare it to Any Number in a way. Pick the right numbers and you could win the car, Not a bad concept. I liked the design
I can think of one good thing to say about the game... at least this playing... he won the car!
From that clip, I'd be inclined to agree.
"It was lame" is the entire case against it? Sorry, but detractors are going to have to do better than that.
I will say that dollars-and-cents for anything other than grocery items, which would (technically) be employed by Telephone Game, doesn't really work well, but I'm not sure that alone justifies retiring after only 3 plays.
Buzzr will never air seasons 1-10
Yes, they are bad games. But, I'm glad Wink gave us a chance to see them. Price geeks and historians needed to see them for some historical perspective. And they won't air on Pluto TV.
I know this comment isn't about one of the three pricing games you mentioned, but I did notice you mentioned On the Spot. I do admit that one was kind of confusing, and why that only struck around for a couple of years. I do know someone though, whose dad was one of the few who actually won that pricing game on the show. I believe he was playing for an SUV or some kind of car like that.
Got to agree with the Dob.. what were they thinking on those 1978 games? Surprised no one's said anything about current pricing game Gas Money.. which NEVER gets won, yet keeps being run out there.
yeah, they changed the gameplay mechanic no less than twice, and it's kinda unfair when the ARP is VERY close to the incorrect prices.
jamstar1 Yet for some reason, the current leadership refuses to retire the game.. it's awful to watch it get lost almost 100% of the time.. what keeps Gas Money on there? If the Dob was still there, this game would've likely been changed again or retired..
One more thing.. Stack the Dack isn't one that should be retired... the contestants are the problem with that one.
Gregory Pearsoll on top of that, That's too much should be retired as well.
During the Barker Era, contestants kept forgetting to shout "That's Too Much!". During Drew's tenure there were more losers on it than Gas Money!
Fans attributed it to the 2/9 method (I think there's even a video of it on youtube) where it's either the 2nd price or 9th price that's JUST over the ARP, sometimes in conjunction with 'going one more' or not!
Add Pay the Rent to the list of games that need to be retired
Wrestling with Wregret brought me here! XD
Thank you for coming!
4:08 HOLY SHIT!! the price is right logo is behind!!!CHEAPSKATES!!!
The Shower Game might work today if Becky G was in the shower.
The Phone Game failed as well as Professor Price, but was good enough to show up on the Decades version on the Wii.
You're expecting Lidia to have sense and/or good taste here...
As for Ludia/Lidia, does it matter what their name is?
What? Will they...send me a lifetime supply of their games????
There's worse things I can be, as I can see now.
Oh those are some mad people skills you have. There's a forum that you'd fit right in with. Chris and Travis would LOVE you...
i never saw The Shower Game on The Price is Right.
It was played only once, and it was subsequently retired.
Armory Brunot,Jr. it was known to be played at least twice. The second playing had “doors” in front of the stalls.
It was played 10 times and had a 3 win and 7 loss record the reason why we haven't seen them is GSN couldn't air them or pluto tv can't because of the fur ban. That's what I hate about the fur ban you can't change what happened 40+ years ago
Alex Edeburn,
I appreciate the intel. I do wish the fur ban were not in place. It would give us a chance to see some of the Nighttime shows from Bob Barker’s run. I wish Buzzr would air those.
There were a few pricing games wherein I have never seen on The Price Is Right, and that is The Shower Game, Professor Price, Finish Line, and The Telephone Game. Those are few of the pricing games wherein I don't remember seeing, on The Price Is Right, on television. However, I have seen it illustrated on UA-cam.
What happen to Joker card game?
Retired in 2008, after an undeserving 14 years on the show.
Range game should of gotten retired before Joker game. Range game was boring
Shower Game---DUMB!!!!
i love the price is right.
WHAT!!!!
Take a look at the beginning of shower game. The person acts like he’s going to take a real shower. Ironically, 38 years later Ellen Degeneres would have a game on her show called Make It Rain which water would come from umbrellas and money. It looked nothing like Shower Game
Those three did not work out.
am i the only person who thinks bullsye i was a great game
Aww now c'mon At least with the last two they were trying to be creative!
I'm sorry but I have to mostly disagree with you......
