  • In this video I share a recent closet clean out, tips on making decisions on what to keep and what to give away, and how different this clean out turned out to be. I just turned 60 and have been retired for almost a year. It was time to cleanup the closet and make space for clothes that fit my new life. However, I was in for a surprise, this closet clean out was like no other. It was actually cathartic! I expected to make decisions logically but it turned out to be all about how the clothes made me feel. If you are feeling stale and like you could use some inspiration and something new, this video might be for you! As always leave me a comment below if you have something to share.

I am 70. I just had major surgery to my right shoulder, and I am binge you-tube watching as I am immobile,. I am typing this left handed, so that indicates my sincerity! I found and love this video. Recently, I have struggled with getting rid of things that I don't need any more and trying to make decisions, and I cannot tell you how much your video has helped me more than the other 30+ I've watched. The comment especially, about how it makes you feel, because I have lots of clothes that I think I love: example - I love this black jacket but it doesn't quite fit so I can't wear it now, but one day I might ... LET IT GO! I love giving the expensive items to charity so that someone can give them another life! You rock!!! hugs!

Thank you so much! Wow I really appreciate that you commented at all let alone left handed! Your words are so encouraging it really means a lot to me! Truly. Shoulder surgery is a tough surgery. My husband is just recovering from that too and had a good result but it's been a few months ago. It does get better, I hope your recovery goes really well and flys by.
      Thank you again 🙂

I did this kind of cleanout after leaving the office. Some things that were really quite gorgeous and that I wore frequently and "couldn't do without" went immediately into the pile: "some working person will love this." But not me. I'm out of those constrains and now finding my legitimate style that must combine: Comfort + Beauty + Freedom.

It is a time of change and unfortunately it doesn't get celebrated like it should. We celebrate other times of change in our lives, womanhood, marriage, but the celebration tends to drop off as we age and that is a shame. This is a new beginning! How do you like your new wardrobe?

So enjoyed this. Have gone through this myself in last 12 months following retirement in my early 60s! Still love alot of items but now wearing more relaxed versions eg softer shirts, wider leg pants, more colour! Donated my workwear to charity supporting women return to work. Feeling frumpy and not like me are great criteria.

Here's a good one. I had a stylish mother who knew what looked good on her. But her style wasn't my style. It took me until I turned 60 and retired to discover my own style! I guess I'm a late bloomer. Lol.

Loved the trousers with the bird on it and the suede 70s jacket. I'm in my late 50s and went through a similar fase after being declared unfit to work after a serious illness. I had a closet of clothes that didn't fit my lifestyle anymore, I stopped colouring my hair and menopause happened; I totally lost my way in dressing myself. Slowly I found my new 'me' style and it's a lot more fun, quirky and bold than my previous style. And I'm feeling so much more myself now. I'd love to see your journey in finding your own style post retirement. Thanks for sharing this video!

You know what is easier than doing going through each item? Just turn all the hangers (with clothes on them) around in the closet. Have them face backwards. When you wear an item put it back in the closet the normal way. Over time you can see what you wear and don't wear. Then it is easy to give away the item you don't wear. You don't have to decide on anything now and go down memory lane with each item. Over time you will see what you actually wear.

Do what I've been doing put them all in the closet and if you don't wear them within the month donate them and yes I tried all them on witch I found out that most no longer fit 2 bags went out so far and counting ,so I've switch too loose fitting leggings that look like trousers to match with the items I've kepted. 1 black suit pant ,1 chocolate brown cream black small checked suit that I've put together with solid chocolate dress, pleated skirt, trousers and 2 floral print dresses max with solid matching short sleeved blazers. Then the rest I have will pair together naturally. Dress up or down. It's a big change for me went from a size 14-16 petite too 18-20 petite.the new items are so comfortable and go with all the other keep items. And I'm still sorting through the summer clothes and donating too friends . I've learned that casual flowing dresses are better in spring too fall and can be layered in winter. My teen girls I've helped throughout the years sure loved the over flow of clothes. And I've kepted all my turtle neck sweaters and cardigans that fit will gift the cream and black long cardigans because I'm a petite and they are a regular length. Now I just have too go throughout all shoes and boots. I just have too get the closet back together for quick outfits on the go. And I will keep up dating as needed.

I retired in Dec 2022 at age 65 - I purged my clothes and put everything that remained back into the closet with the hanger backward. As I go through the seasons (4 very different in New England) and continue my weight loss, I am keeping a bag in the closet and decluttering additional items along the way. It is time to take a look at the "professional" clothes again and thin them out, I may do consulting work and/or need something "nice" to wear to a funeral? It is a process like shedding your skin and It is fun to embrace a new season.
