  • I am finding that cleaning out my closet, going through my clothes, going through my shoes and other possessions has been an exercise that is helping me change into my post retirement self. I think there are many times in our life where we reinvent ourselves and learn and grow. This time in life is so exciting! There are so many possibilities and I don't think it gets the attention it deserves. Enjoy yourself and feel free to reinvent yourself let go of old things that don't serve you anymore and open the door to something new and exciting!

Yikes I bought the pumps so long ago I am not sure if the ones linked below are the same. I tried to link the same or similar.

This is good motivation to do the same in my closet with shoes and clothes. My advice to you is to WEAR all your favorites. Don't pass them over or save them for "good." As you age your feet can flatten and get too big for your shoes. If you're like a lot of us, you may be buying a new shoe wardrobe in a larger size some years from now. I made the mistake of "saving" my best shoes and buying multiples of great shoes, then outgrowing them before I got to wear them. So I wasted money when I thought I was saving money.

Oh my gosh that is such good advise! Not only do we grow out of them but what are we waiting for? Thank you for your great advise!

This was interesting. I’m close to your age, but life took a different path for me. I was a SAHM to 4 sons for many years, went back to work, and now work from home. My shoes are either flip flops, work out shoes, boots, or “going out” heels. I don’t think 61 is too old for sexy shoes!!! I’m continually on the hunt for comfort AND style. I’ve started by skipping the “regular” shoe section in stores, and just go straight to the “comfort” brands. They all have attempted to make styles that blend form and function. Yes, they cost more, but I buy fewer pairs this way. I’ve tried Ecco, Artistry, Spring Step, 4 Cccc, Naot, Dansko, and Chocolate Blu. Skip the Clark’s. You’re cuter than that!

Oh my gosh I loved your comment (thank you) and I will try those brands. I also think we need to sing praises for SAHMs more often, I think it is so so valuable, I was a Latchkey kid in the 70s for a while. I never had children (though I wanted to) but if I did, I wanted to be a SAHM. And after all that, now you are working. Working is also rewarding, I hope it is a fun job :)

I’m impressed how you rationalized whether to keep or donate. Ugh, shoes are my weakness. Especially tennis shoes. Thank you for giving me inspiration to start purging. Have a wonderful week.😊

I'm 54 now, working in technology and from home. I refuse to buy any type of "fancy" shoe anymore (unless I have a special occasion to go to and I don't have anything in my closet.) From here on in, I'm dedicated to sandals, sneakers and winter boots (as I live in a colder climate). That's it for me! It's so different now than when I was in my 20's/30's where I would buy gorgeous shoes but my feet would be dead at the end of the day...just in the name of fashion. Comfort and quality is my priority now.

I smiled when I read your comment :) why oh why do we torture our feet? I still love cute shoes but only comfortable ones. Thank you for your comment!
