- It’s declutter time! Deb has a plan and OJ has a dumpster! Just over 4 years ago, we downsized to a smaller house, so we had a lot of decluttering to do before moving. Here we are 5 years later and somehow we’ve accumulated a bunch more clutter! It’s time once more to downsize to a smaller house, suitable for our retirement years. We’ll keep you updated on the house hunting process as well!

Tell the kids that the donation truck is coming to your house for a pick up on "X" date and they can either come and get their stuff or it'll go on the truck.
A lot of the stuff is our granddaughter’s. When she was going through chemo she got so much stuff given to her that she had way to much, so she decided to get rid of some old toys and things. We had it here with the plan to have a yard sale, and it just didn’t happen. I’ll list some for sale, but I think a lot of it will just be thrown away or donated.
I made an initial pass through our house about 3 1/2 years ago and got rid of piles of old papers stored in boxes and bins that we didn't need anymore. I did an initial pass through our house and got rid of a lot of extra items that we didn't use anymore. At the beginning of this year I restarted the decluttering process and I've sold and donated a lot more items. I started to go through our young adult kids' rooms and have gotten rid of things with their permission. When it comes time for us to downsize, I want to be ready to do so. Too often people remain stuck in a home that is too big for them and no longer suits their needs because they are warehousing too much stuff and the thought of moving it all seems overwhelming to them. Best to do this gradually.
Yes it is a great idea start sooner so your not over welmed when the time comes. We have more to come

It's never easy to unload stuff (memories) but to be honest, the memories will always be with you. It's what you want to pass on that you need to keep!
For sure, we are not getting rid of everything but close lol. Some will go here and there but there's more to come
Photographing sentimental items before getting rid of them is a good thing to do. Also, set a nice table with special China and photograph.

It helped me to get all my dishes out and put like with like to see how many I had and choose my favorites to keep. How many trays, bowls, platters etc do you need? Psychologically it worked better for me to sort out things I love rather than thinking of what to get rid of. I just like to stay positive. The biggest thing that helped us was deciding not to store anything. It either fits in the house and gets used or it went. We sold all the totes.

Yes, I did something similar with the kitchen declutter that’s coming out tomorrow. Once we have our next house decided on out it will be easier to figure out what will fit. I have a feeling it won’t be much. 😂

We went through all of our photos and distributed pictures of friends and families to those individuals in the pictures. They loved it!

Isn't it ironic at how fast things can pile up. When we were in the Army we had to declutter every couple of years. Now I need 3 dumpsters LOL Even that is pushing it. It's probably closer to 6 😆🤣😆🤣

I can’t imagine what we could accumulate if we ever stayed in the same house for that long! I think our record is 7 years! 😃 We fix a place up and then let someone else enjoy it! 😂

Tell your kids to make sure any gift they give you is a consumable. Don’t get rid of your DVDs since TV is so bad. I took a couple of days and put all of our DVDs in sleeves, labeled them, and put them several DVD containers. Reduced the footprint.
Yes, tv is terrible! There’s not much worth watching. We mainly watch UA-cam. We can usually find old shows on there. Lately we’ve been watching Perry Mason. 😁
I've also given relatives who were downsizing free permission that they could declutter any gifts I had given them if they wished. I didn't want them to feel guilt, or feel compelled to ask me for permission each time or worried I might be offended. 💖💖
Moving is the best motivation for decluttering

Ask your children what they like have them come over and then when you know what they like to see if you can give it to them or if you'd rather keep it. That way you know it's going to a good home with many years of enjoyment.
We had our older kids take some things and the other stuff they want but not right now. New video coming Saturday at 9am central ✨️
I’m taking pictures of a lot of the things we aren’t keeping, and I’ll post them in our family group, so even if they can’t come over they can check out the photos…as long as they come and get anything they want! Otherwise, Dad has a dumpster! 😁

I know the feeling. I am still going through all kinds of stuff from my parent's place after their passing. A very, very slow process as it seems that everything I touch has a memory attached. But I'm getting there...but very few notice any difference. lol One container at a time. Bruce and Otis

Oh my gosh, declutter, there is so much we need to do something with! Now I am not able to do most of the stuff I used to be able to do and it is a little difficult. Our son and daughter are in their 40's now and they don't live that close to us. It is ridiculous the things we have kept. Hoping by spring we will have gotten rid of a lot of stuff!!

The only way ive found to reasonably keep up with family/kids clutter is to just regularly get rid of stuff on a daily basis. Then once or twice a year ill set aside a day to get rid of more, or tackle any area thats beginning to get cluttered.
Yes, it’s an ongoing chore. This declutter for us will be a huge one as we’re planning to downsize to a much smaller house in the coming year. Thanks for watching. 😊

Maybe this winter I’ll have time to look into that, but now that we’ve moved to our much smaller house we don’t have a lot of extra stuff to declutter. ~ Mrs. Coffee
I gave a ton of vases away to a lady who was going to use them to make decorative floral arrangements that she offers for sale. So much better to support her small business than it would be to allow those unused vases to collect dust on a shelf in the garage. I've also got a 100 or more coffee cups that we've collected over the years - some were gifts, some we got as freebies at various events we attended. It's a crazy amount for us to have and we need to get rid of most of them. Add in all of the water bottles collected over the years that we need to cull through. So much stuff!

@@MrsCoffeeWalks The crazy thing is, we have always participated in our community yard sales each year so we really aren't the types to hold onto everything, or so I thought. Now that I'm looking at it all with an eye on downsizing - yeah, we have some work to do. We're late 50's and I'm glad we've started this process!
@@goofygirl1311 oh us too! In fact for two years in a row we had fundraising yard sales to help with expenses during our granddaughter’s chemo. We sold a bunch of our own stuff and had donations from other people as well. You’d think that would have cleared it all out, but then I start looking I see so much more. 😳 we’re both 65, so we’re long overdue for a purge! I’m sure our kids will be thankful. 😃
@@MrsCoffeeWalks I hope that your granddaughter is doing better now. When you have something like that happen in your family the whole world stops and you focus your energy on how to help your kids/grandkids in any way that you can. I think you two have done an amazing job. Your house is neat and looks organized. Now it's just a matter of figuring out what items you need to take with you to your new home or part with.

We do have a coffee bar set up here, if you check some of our previous videos. But when we downsize, I have plans for a coffee bar and a coffee wall! 😂 I want to display all of your coffee mugs. It will probably be summer by the time I get to do that, but stay tuned. 😊

Oh man... We have been going through the same thing for the last six months or more. I have come to the conclusion that I'm a packrat, and Claudia is no better. Giving, donating, throwing out and selling...but still not much progress. I think I'm going to go with the dumpster idea...lol 👍👍👍

I watched the same woman and she was very helpful. I do this every year a couple times and it helps but oh boynwenhave lived here over 20 years and we have a long way to go. Also we do have our kids stuff and our parents and grandparents stuff oh boy! Ron is a big hobby guy with lots of collections and he is very sentimental. This is what I want to work.hard on for the next few months Tha KS for the reminder. Love the Plan and understand the dumpster!! I want to downsize soon funny thing is Ron keeps saying in 5 to 6 years closer to retirement cause he only wants to do the move once after watching you I think he may be right cause we could have ended up doing it a couple times. When are you retiring?
We initially thought this would be our last move, but the more time we’ve spent in our home town, especially visiting my brother in the hospital has made us realize we want to be able to spend more time with family and there’s just no place like home. 😊

@@justramblinaround that’s what I said! But we have one. Sprucewoods Provincial Park has a nice campground called Kiche Manitou. It’s just 15 minutes away. We’ve done a few of the hiking trails there on our channel. There’s also a casino and restaurant near there. 😊

I have about 600 DVDs on shelves in my Garage, I have three suitcases of my Mum and Dad's photos and 4 boxes full of old records (around 700)....I think I need a dumpster too!

Think of all the stuff as dust collectors, and I absolutely hate to dust. There are better things to do. Time to downsize the mugs! Also, tell people not to buy you anymore.
Haha, we just bought some with sayings this past winter. We do plan to keep the mugs because they are kindof our brand for the channel. I have a plan for a coffee wall where we can do livestreams. The dust collectors above the cabinets can go though. We actually did our next declutter video yesterday, and it’s the kitchen. Watch for it next Saturday. 😊

What size house are you in now? What size are you going to move to?
Hmmm, OJ will have to answer the first part. I’m not sure of the sq ft. It’s a story and a half. One bedroom on the main floor, 2 upstairs and a second bathroom, plus a full basement. What size are we moving to? We’re not sure yet, but we’re hoping to go very small. Not quite tiny, but close! 😁
