My first curly triple unicorn haircut at home

- This is me, Sarah, a wavy/curly 44 year old girl from the Isle of Man, doing a triple unicorn cut for the first time. I have naturally red hair, individual strands are quite thick/coarse, but I don't have a huge amount of hair. There are so many different curl charts and pictures, but from the original Lorraine Massey Curly Girl Handbook I have a mix of S'wavy, Wavy, Cherub Curls and Botticelli even a few Corkicelli curls thrown in for good measure, I'd say 2c wavy and 3a curly in the main.
I still have no clue about porosity and whether I need more or less protein and/or moisture, I'm only 6 weeks or so into the curly girl method and trying to keep it simple, with mainly conditioner and gel only. Haven't yet found perfect conditioner, currently using the XHC strawberry. I've tried a few gels and I think I prefer the Umberto Giannini pink tube Curl Jelly the best so far.
I've been diffusing on medium heat and medium airflow, but may go back to airdrying more often as I don't want to heat damage my hair.

I loved how you did your hair cut! I'm a retired hairstylist & for a quick shag look it's looks awesome & much better than some of the other hair cut videos! Your hair looks great! Look at that curl!! Excellent job. And I think the grey streak is pretty. I have blonde going quickly grey and have one of those lighter streaks in the front as well. The sun really lightens it in the Missouri summers. You have beautiful red curls...flaunt them, girl!

Hello again Sarah, I just wanted to add that you are a NATURAL on video! Very down-to-earth and articulate with useful commentary as you go along. Your winning quality here is that you connect with your "audience" by being who you are. Hence, you exude natural confidence. I find you much more relatable than comparable videos of perfectly made-up women (wearing tons of make-up), with the benefit of top-quality video equipment. You look beautiful without makeup -- AND you aced the Unicorn test without a frigging mirror, even!! The world is your oyster!!

I admire your bravery ! Love your silver streak ! We have almost identical red color to our hair . But my silvers are specked in to where the can’t be seen unless you look close. It turned out wonderfully! Way to go ! Love it ❤

Hello Sarah! Well, I have to say, as a fellow "curly-girl" with similar issues (as far as hair goes, at any rate!), I was literally holding my breath while you were doing that third cut. LOL! You see, I tried what you did here some months back but I don't think I followed the instructions .. or else it was a modification of this unicorn technique. At any rate, it really didn't work for me. My front bangs were exactly like you described yours here, where the shorter bits weren't curling. But now that I see what you did, I'm going to try it because yours turned out beautifully! Aside from being a great cut, it softens your face and makes you look a lot younger also. You look great! I was so scared when you were cutting that last bit, that it was going to stick up or do something weird. lol. I actually clapped when I saw the outcome!! Great job, especially for a first-timer...very brave!! I'd love to know if you continued with this technique and how it's working for you. (FYI, I'm from Newfoundland with an Irish background, living in Toronto..and that photo of me is about six years old. I had a great stylist who sadly left the country the year after this cut, and since then I've had no luck finding someone who "gets" my hair. I have a lot of hair, as that stylist told me, but each strand is fine. In addition, some parts of my hair are really really curly while other parts are only wavy. So the best technique for me, he said, is one he learned in Ireland. It's a "free-style" finger-layering, which means you don't layer in a uniform way (different from the unicorn!). Rather, you "feel" your way around the hair, using your fingers and snip according to the type of curls you encounter in each section of hair. Have you heard of that? Anyway, this is a long comment. I'd love to know how things have evolved with your hair, since then, and if you've ever heard of free-style finger-layering. Hi Sarah, I’ve been thinking about a unicorn cut for a while, decided to have a trawl through here for ideas, you are the first one I’ve looked at, and I’m not going to look at anymore, you have given me the confidence to dive in and have a go. Your hair has come out really lovely, if mine comes out just s good I’ll be over the moon. Coincidentally, I am originally from the island, it’s been a loooooong time since I lived there, but it is still home.😁 I get over twice a year to see my sister and the beautiful place I left behind.😊

Maybe it’s just a nice wish to have.😁 right, I’ve done my hair, it isn’t as long as yours but I took about 11/2 inches off, and went for the three -cut, it gives me height on the top which I like, my husband can’t see any difference, but he never can, lol. All in all really pleased. Thanks for giving me the confidence to go ahead.😁

I just have to say that I am so grateful for this tutorial! I only cut my hair every 4-6 months and I always come back to your video! I am so thankful it is still up and running. I have curly hair as well and I am getting a lot of gray. I am 44 years old and I expected this because it runs in the family on one side. My gray hair is really wirey and doesn’t hold color well. My under curls are also very tight compared to the top curls and layers. My hair is wavy curly on the top, but it has tight spirals underneath, and they are so much more healthy than the rest of my hair. Thank you for sharing this video and at the moment I don’t have long enough hair to try it out because if I make a mistake and I need to have a professional fix it, then my hair will end up really short. I’ll let it grow out a little more and get some professional scissors and maybe try it out!

I'm currently growing out my gray along with an extremely short haircut so it will be at least a year before I can begin layering. It's been over a year for you. Hey Julia thanks for kind comment… I’ll be honest I got quite bored of the curly girl method but I’m still cutting it myself and really pleased that my gray is more whitey blonde and I’ve embraced my own colour hehe… hair is still wavy/curly but I’m usually bunging it back into a scrunchie pony tail most days for work now… best of luck to you!
