I think placing the ponytails higher up is the way to do it. Manes by Mell made a reel on instagram of her doing it and it honestly just makes more sense for a more rounded look. I agree with your point the V shape isn't very flattering in the front compared to pushing it all in the back. I usually cut straight across on the bottom maybe an in or two to give it a more U shaped look.
Manes by Mell butterfly cut actually works really really well on longer wavy hair especially for fine hair. Keeps the layers short and a higher density at the bottom. I've been cutting my own hair for years and even I found the universal haircut daunting.
Also wanted to mention a UA-camr named Paul Watts actually came out with the butterfly technique with the two cuts before Brad Mondo did. Given Brad's popularity his became viral but even Paul's video has a good amount of views.
Curls by Shirlz did a diy rezo cut which is definitely easier to follow if someone is feeling adventurous.
Absolutely loved the breakdown on the cuts!

Thanks for your feedback. I haven't seen the reel that Manes by Mell did with the higher pigtails, but I agree that it does make sense. In fact, I think it was you who first suggested it to me, so thank you for that. And thank you for the information on the Butterfly cut. I'll have to look into the info from the original creator. I could see the butterfly cut working better for someone with wavy hair and definitely someone with finer hair and lower density when you really don't want as many layers. I'll have to look into the other video you mentioned as well. I may not be that adventurous yet, but it would be good to have for the future. ☺

The double/triple unicorn cuts only create 'steps' if you section horizontally. The sections should be made vertically (for example, going from the ear to the top of the head) which creates more blended layering.

I agree great job explaining the different cuts. I am excited to see you do the pigtails. I have cut my own curls/waves for years now also. I have tried the unicorn and the butterfly most recently. I seem to have no underneath layers so when I do a half up it looks kinda crazy lol I’ve not heard of the Universe cut. Definitely going to check out the video on it, but pretty sure I don’t have those skills either 🤨

It's an interesting haircut. Seems pretty tricky though... maybe I'll be brave enough to try it one day 😂
