  • In this week’s video we take a muddy walk into the woods and Julie has a brain freeze, completely forgetting the most simple of words🤪 but gets a fabulous photo ….. looking up! Martin tried to take over the filming, but Julie’s having none of it 🤣 then back to the boat for a lovely home-made vegetable soup! There’s the most stunning sunset later that day ….. truly amazing! We cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home up to Debdale Marina to get some diesel, before taking a beautiful cruise through to Saddington. Also ….. is there anything you’d like to know, any QUESTIONS? 🤔
    Hope you enjoy this week’s video! xx 😃

    If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have tou all onboard! ❤️
    Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
    We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

    Its called coppice the tree is cut then in produces lots of stems from the original trunk. Hard to say what tree without seeing the leaves but probably willow too big for hazel. The tree hanging on to its leaves is an oak

      Coppicing is a sign of serious woodland management, and can indicate ' Semi - Natyral Ancient Woodland'. This is the type of woodland where you see carpets of bluebells. Coppiced trees outlive non - managed specimens as the don't suffer the storm damage. Coppicing produces long thing branches that are still used to make hurdles & fencing, which is why most coppiced trees are hazel & willows, but other species can be coppiced.

    The trees are like that because they are coppice stools they look like ash. But that little coppice looks like it was really very productive because the stools look quite close together. A good coppice would have stool’s about 7 feet apart and they would have been used for coppice crafts. I’m a polelathe turner and carver.

    Even with this being January it already does feel like spring is coming. A lot of that has to do with the sunny day. The moody days don't make me think spring at all. We had our second moderate snow this past week but now it's OK again. Thunderstorm today and they are saying 70 degrees on Monday. I have to like El Nino winters if they are like this one. I think I heard that the UK had another storm. That seems never ending.

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  3 місяці тому +1

      Oh wow, snow one week and 70° the next, and we thought UK weather was fickle! The storms seem to have gone (for now) but it was literally one after another! The issue we have at the moment over here is the rain! We get the odd sunny spell, but we’ve had so much rain over the last few weeks that the rivers can’t cope, the earth is so waterlogged and the canals swollen, we really could do with a nice dry spell. There are a few places on the canals where there have been landslides and trees and mud are blocking the navigation. Roll on Spring eh! 😃 Thank you Dorothy for commenting, we love seeing them! xx

    Tell Martin that, as far as filming goes, there's her way and there's the wrong way. Choose wisely. Words of wisdom from a fellow struggling brother in arms...umm, I mean another very happy 😬 brother in matrimony. 😄
    Great point about YT using "subscribe" rather than "follow". I've never thought about it but you're right (I'm sure you hear that all the time from Martin 😉), people would probably be more incline to click on follow than subscribe. Interesting. 🤔
    As far as questions... maybe you've already covered it in a previous video but, I'd be interested in your back story, so to speak. Where you're both from, what you both did before the narrowboat... That is, if you feel comfortable telling that to the YT world.
    Thanks for putting together these videos, vlogs or whatever the proper term is these days.

    Gorgeous winter cruising this week, Julie. I'm always surprised by how much milder your winters seem to be than mine here in Chicagoland, USA. Though, this year has been completely crazy! We've had some of the warmest winter weather on record, including today, which is supposed to reach 76F (24C)! February has seen the warmest average temperatures in over 100 years of record-keeping. It makes me fearful of a scorching summer this year. 🥵 My question: Is there anywhere on the canal system that you haven't been to yet and still want to visit?

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  3 місяці тому

      Hi Chris! Wow, 76°F in February, that is very warm! It doesn’t usually get much higher than that in our summer lol 😂 You’re right, this winter has been very mild so far, but with that comes the rain, we’ve had so so much rain! Rivers and canals are swollen and all the ground is waterlogged and there’s landslides and trees coming down due to the roots not having anything to cling to! We’re hoping for a dryer and warmer summer, as last summer was also very wet. The weather is definitely a bit bonkers lately! Thank you for the question, we’ll add it to the others for our A&A vlog in a couple of weeks time. Thanks Chris! xx

    Martin, I don't know if you've heard this one before, but Clayton Moore--the actor who played The Lone Ranger in the old TV series--had a trick to keep his cowboy hat from being blown off his head on windy filming days. He glued a ring of thin surgical hose/tubing to the sweatband inside his hat. It was just tight enough on his head to prevent the hat from being blown off, even on windy days, while on horseback, and even in some of the fight scenes. He swore by that trick, and used it in every hat he wore in the show, as well as in personal appearances at events. Might think about giving that a try. --Dan

    Hello Julie, hello Martin,
    I have looked through the questions, here is a summary.
    How often do you clean your narrowboat outside and what polish do you use? (5x)
    How do you get your mail and what do you do with your household items? (4x)
    What led you to live on a boat and how did your friends and family react? (3x)
    With the CRT increase, do you still think living on a narrowboat is a sustainable lifestyle? (2x)
    What is "Treacle" and how does it taste? (2x)
    Do you have some kind of group chat with other narrowboat owners to communicate issues on the waterways, and is there canal security surveillance? (2x)
    Do not having a car/van cause you issues? (2x)
    What aerial would be best for cruising on the water? What else do you need for internet and TV? (2x)
    How often and when do you need to use the H-shaped Lockgate flue attachment? (1x)
    Is the Diesel Heater more economical compared to using coal? (1x)
    How long does it take to set up after you pull in to moor? (1x)
    How survivable are you on the boat in remote areas without access to shops, water, and diesel? (1x)
    These would be my questions. 😊
    What tips do you have for someone who wants to live on a narrowboat? 😊
    What are the main differences between living on a narrowboat and living in a conventional house? 😊
    Kind regards
    Uwe

    Greetings from Australia! Love your videos. Thanks. I think the trees are like that after they have been coppiced. They harvest the wood by cutting off the trunk and encourage new shoots from the stump. They grow up like the ones you saw in the woodland. Then they repeat the process. Keep up the good work!.......Oh, I just saw cotcottage's comment below!...Anyway, thanks again.

    As always you two make me wish I was in England. I envy you. But I do have a question. I watch many narrowboaters and in the two years I have watched, I've only seen a cop on the towpath once. Hi Andrea, wow, bet you’re so excited!! 12 days, that’s going to go so quick! Seeing as our Q&A vlog won’t be for a couple of weeks, we’ll answer your question now lol! We don’t have any experience with Giffgaff I’m afraid, so really can’t help you on that one.
      We are with EE and have always been able to get a good signal, most of the boaters we know also use EE too. You will need a mobile router with removable aerials that have SMA connectors, we have this one www.argos.co.uk/product/3201136 and it has been fine. You will also need an external aerial that is omnidirectional with SMA cables to run from the roof down and into your router, we have this one amzn.to/3wsniHO. You may be able to get more advanced tech now, we bought our set up in 2021, but it has been brilliant. As you probably know, a narrowboat being a steel tube, is a bit of a faraday cage, so you’ll only get a mobile signal if you’re by a window, hence why you need an aerial on the roof to bring the signal in. You can mount it onto a magnetic pole mount, which you can pick up at most chandleries or I believe you can get them on Amazon too. We have a Smart TV too, so connects to the router through WiFi and we watch UA-cam, Netflix, Prime, catchup TV, the lot, and we have never been without a signal. Really hope this helps! What’s your boat name and where are you setting out from, we’ll look out for you out on the cut?! Feel free to ask anything else. Keep in touch! xx

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi Trevor, we will answer your question fully when we do the Q&A vlog, but just quickly - To be a solo boater, you would need to be relatively fit, for working the locks and swing bridges, but continuously cruising is a great way of life, and everything can be overcome, ie doctors, prescriptions, dentist etc, nothing is impossible. We know many solo boaters, men and women, and they love it. The boating community is wonderful and solo boaters will always get lots of help, all boaters help each other, it’s a lovely community. Thanks Trevor! xx
