Composed by Desmond Earley, this piece brings to life James Joyce’s poem (XXIV) from his iconic Chamber Music collection, capturing the ethereal imagery of a woman silently and gracefully combing her hair. Accompanied by the Solstice Ensemble, led by Anita Vedres, the music subtly mirrors the introspective themes of distance and indifference, resonating with the mystical aura of Ireland. Soprano soloists Emily Doyle and Kiri O'Neill blend seamlessly with the ensemble, evoking a timeless, reflective atmosphere, guided by the rich textures of string and wind instruments.
This video not only showcases the Choral Scholars' distinctive blend of Irish choral sound but also the ensemble’s interpretation of Joyce’s works in a contemporary, yet deeply respectful manner. Conducted by Desmond Earley, this performance is part of a broader international collaboration to fulfil Joyce’s dream of setting all 36 poems from Chamber Music to music.
