Thanks for reviewing these, Ryan! I love my 4s. Looking forward to seeing them in person!
Yeah they are lookin good!!
SO stoked to get this shoe. Thanks for the early overview!
Thank you for stopping by Nathan!! This is gonna be a good one!
Thanks, Ryan. Really excited for this shoe.
Thanks Keith!
You got me super stoked for this one. Great review as always!
Thank you Aaron!!
Just bought my 5’s. Thank you for this review!! I’ve got a narrow foot and this shoe will be great for me.
Thanks for the review Ryan! I'm super excited for the SG5! I have been a huge fan of the SG and with my next ultra coming up in April, I'm hoping to secure the 5 and put them to the test!
Oh yeah, I think you're going to like them if you are already a fan! Get online early on 3/15 because they are going to go fast!
Crisp, fact-packed review, Ryan, thanks. Fascinated by the grip of those lugs on this snow pack we have right now...to turn with confidence in those guys is impressive. Looks to be an excellent trail shoe. Thanks!
Thanks Joe! It was such a great feeling, really surprised at the grip out there!
Thanks, I’m definitely going to get a pair
Nice!!
Just ordered my 5s today can’t wait to run!! 👟
Great review I’m stoked about the speed goat 5
Sweeet!!
I’m excited that you’re excited. :)
Haha that’s awesome, thanks!!
I am that kind of SG4 fan you mentioned. Mainly because I find the SG4 the only max cushion shoe that for me can handle tech alpine terrain. I tried the 5 and the stretchy very comfortable upper removes some of those characteristics. I do have a very narrow and I like s-lab kind of European shoe fits. I ended up buying the last few pairs of sg4 I could find online.
The best UA-cam running shoe reviewer strikes again! Thanks so much for answering my EVO questions here, it was everything I'd hoped to hear. It's been my favorite shoe, but I've still struggled a little bit for width. I usually end up pulling the upper away from the midsole. Super annoying. Can't wait for the full review. Would also love any news/info you get on the "Wide" version, although in Hoka fashion, I imagine it'll just be a little extra fabric over the top. It could make a huge difference with this more flexible material though, I guess. Can I ask how different the upper is to the Mach 4? It's the only Hoka I have that's even slightly similar. Thanks!
For me hoka even in 2e/ wide still narrow in toebox(
Thank you!!! I don't have any inside info on the wide version, but I would assume one is coming. And the upper is more similar to the Mach Supersonic and the Tecton X, it's been updated since the Mach 4. Feels like it will be stronger and more durable. Thanks again!!
@@RyanClaytonFilms the pre-order listing for the SG5 in the UK has a 'Wide' option, so it definitely seems they'll be sticking with it. Can't say I'm lucky enough to have tried the Tecton or Mach Supersonic to know the upper, but it sounds awesome! Looking forward to your full reviews, as always! Keep up the great work.
SOOOOOO stoked! Did all of my ultras in SG starting with the 2s. Never had any issues besides one blister on my pinkie toe during my 100k last year. I have already told my running store that I will be buying them the moment they get them. 😂
haha nice!! that's awesome that you already told your running store!
Thanks for your initial thoughts. I've run both my 100's in the Evo Mafate 2, which are known to have a bit more volume than the Speedgoats. Rumor has it big changes are coming to the Mafates as well.
Yeah I have heard that too, will be interesting to see what those look like when they come out!
Thanks so much for the review! I’d lost my confidence in the speedboat 4 after pressure and blisters on my little toe. I agree the upper toe guard was so unforgiving and rough, so disappointing as I’ve owned the 2 and 3 and never had an issue with them. I have an ultra coming up and desperately need a new pair, looking forward to finding a pair of 5’s 😊.
Hi Cathy, could I ask if you got yourself a pair of 5s for your ultra finally?? How did you go?? 🙋🏻♀️
Nicely done Hoka! Hoping to get my feet in a pair (*hint hint Hoka* LOL). Great thoughts Ryan and thank you for sharing this with us!
Thank you!! These are gonna fly off the shelves!
Super excited about this shoe! I agree that the SG4 was a little firm for the amount of stack that it offered. I didn't run in the EVO, so this sounds like it'll be worth the upgrade to the SG5.
Right on!
Great video as always!
I’ve been using the Torrent 2 for awhile, and decided I wanted more cushioning so I went up to the Speedgoat 4 recently. I’ve been loving it, but definitely think the upper and tongue need some work. Glad to see its getting revamped in v5!
Yeah I like the torrents a lot too, wore them for a 50k race last year. Nice and nimble, and these speedgoats are gonna give them a run for their money even on shorter distance events!
@@RyanClaytonFilms I can’t wait to try them!
@@tfxcShoes you’re gonna like them!
2 of my favorite US bloggers here...just want to ask both of you, using the chance- why u never review asics, as they have imo best trail line...fujitrabuco, trabuco terra, fujilyte etc....many options and very good ones....much better then hokas....also from fit standpoint-)
@@slavasss2189 That’s a good point! I’ve never had a chance to try them, but I’ll definitely need to give them a shot!
Good review, I had to plump for the sg4 as there's no evo and the 5 would release too late for my first trail run.
Like you say they run narrow, might be fine with a thinner pair of socks I'm hoping they'll stretch a bit.
But just in case I bought some Altra mont blanc, as I know they're wider and run faster.
Like you say, it does look to be an inbetween shoe.
I was going to buy the 4, but after watching your video I’ll wait for the 5. Thanks
There ya go, good choice!!
I'm excited that a reviewer finally has my shoe size!
Awesome!! It’s good to find someone that does because shoes can be different depending on the size👍
I had the 3s and didn't try the 4 because some issues people had. Lots of hype about this new model, it has earnt a reputation with this model and seems the right changes for this new iteration. Looking forward to give a try.
Enjoy those upcoming tests with the shoe.
Yeah Javier, give the 5’s a shot they have some good updates!!
Really looking forward to these coming to the UK
Yes!! They are going to sell fast!
@@RyanClaytonFilms I have the Speedgoat Evo's at the moment in a UK size 11. I would have got another pair as they are superb but no chance as they are sold out everywhere 😢. Fingers crossed I can get a pair of the 5's
@@Ecoroof1986 yeah and from what I hear they aren’t making them anymore either 😢. Good luck getting the 5’s!
Thanks for the review and really appreciate the comparison between the EVO and 4. I LOVE the 4 (wide) and I'm really nervous about the changes because it's my favourite shoe and I don't really like HOKAs that much tbh (in terms of fit for me). I'm going to love the better grip, tongue and the weight loss but I'm nervous about the midsole change and upper. Admittedly the upper was stiff on the 4 but it did break in a little bit (after about 20 miles for me?) but I liked that my foot didn't move on dangerous/rocky terrain. The midsole was perfect density for my weight on rocks (< 90kg). Anyway, lets see how the chips fall :)
Thanks Andrew! yeah i hear ya, and you have a few things you miss from the 4's, but I think the overall feel of the shoe is still there. Thanks for stopping by!
I feel the same way. I was an Altra guy but the only thing in a “wide” is the loan peak and I find it to be very unstable in rocky terrain. Currently use the SG 4 and I like it but don’t love it. Still a little narrow so I had to loosen the laces way up to find the sweet spot.
@@wallysworkin823 I needed wide in SG4 as the normal cut into the side of my foot a bit, wide resolved that - still need to wear toe-socks liner under main sock to prevent blistering between toes. Loosened up laces mainly around at bottom to open up the toebox a bit. It's that midsole and wide base I love tbh. I would move around too much in an Altra shoe for technical stuff but I find them great for recovery / walking /hiking.
Great review, thank you. How do you think the Speedgoat 5 compares with the current and upcoming Saucony Xodus (Saucony's highest cushion longest distance trail runner)?
Love that tray in the back of your suv. Is that stock or an accessory? Very handy for muddy and snowy shoes
Thanks! I think it's stock, not sure though, bought this jeep used about 10 years ago. But yes it is super handy and great with muddy shoes!!
Hi, thanks for the review! I've been wearing the SG's since the 3's came out. I am a 10.5 in the SG 4, is the sizing the same. I've been told to size down a half. I have a 100 miler coming up and I need a new pair! Thank you for any info!
Really nice review! But i would like you talk about if it’s waterproof or not.. but i guess it is..
I've had ten pairs of SG 3. And only 1 pair of SG 4 because they were way too firm. Expectations are high now, the SG 5 looks amazing!
If you really liked the 3's, I think you'll like the 5!
I'm cautiously excited about the SG 5. I've put in close to 3000 miles (and counting) across 8 pairs of the EVO. It's the best shoe ever made in my opinion. I'm really hoping they lean more towards that than the SG 4 in terms of the "best of both worlds." I liked the 4, but didn't really LOVE it. Midsole was great, but the upper just wasn't adaptive enough. Definitely gonna get a couple pairs of the 5 once they drop so I can stock up for my spring/summer 100 mile races. 🍻💪
The upper feels more like the EVO than the SG4 so you’re in luck. 👌 you’ll miss some of the plush cushion from the EVO though it’s still really good in my opinion
Evos are my all time favourite too.
Just yesterday did a 60k run with speedgoat evo, amazing comfort no issue what so ever, today I was about to buy a new pair that I’ve found in my size, but after watching this I really don’t know if I shouldn’t wait for the 5
Buy evo too... Can never have too many running shoes. 😁😅
Crapola! Just bought the Speedgoat 4’s on sale.
Will need to ground and pound the 4’s, maybe run extra obstacle course races for 2022, so I can buy the Speedgoat 5’s.
Thank you for the review 👍🏼
Nice!! If you're a fan of the 4's, I think you'll like these too!!!
Ryan how you are doing, great video, may I ask you a quick question I am traveling to Mount Everest base camp in November, and I want to get a shoe, I have 2 options X ultra 4 vs Hoka speedboat 5. Thanks for any help.
Good video.
Not sure why you said the Evo upper stretched. matryx material didn't stretch at all, the vamp did
Thanks for stopping by, it was pretty flexible and stretchy for me, seems to be the case for other people too. the 5 is going to be a really solid update and I don't think people are gonna miss the EVO very much 👍
I’ll let Hoka know they need to give you your cut when I buy these!! Awesome video. Maybe you’ll use these at Cocodona
Hahah yeah that would be a nice perk, lol but i'm good with just getting to try them out! And cocodona???? Well it's not looking very likely at this point
How would these fair going up extremely steep mountain trails? Would they provide sufficient traction, grip and security in your personal opinion? Thanks.
I've got a few trail races coming up and looking for a shoe. I'm interested in the SG5's but concerned because I have had a bad experience with Hoka's Rincon 3. They rub the inside of my feet very badly haha. I don't have wide foot but my issue with the Rincon seems to be the toebox area. My current road shoe that works perfectly is the Asics Novablast 2.
Ahh yeah I'm not sure about the Rincons, thought I was going to see those but never showed up so I can't comment on a comparison. The sg5 upper is nice and flexible though, so you might have better luck
Thanks for the review! I’m a die hard Speedgoat 4 lover but expect to live these also. Do they come in 2EE like Speedgoat 4?
That's great, you'll probably like these a lot! I'm not sure about the wide options though, sorry!
Thanks for the review! I’m not sure why Hoka continues with such a thin tongue. I needed to go to the Gore-Tex version of the SG 4 for more padding.
Yeah it's a fine line between to thin and too thick
Whereas I prefer the thin tongues,, really comfortable imo....
Amazon video, really! But, big question… can you tell me something about you GoPro setting to footage those videos, those are really steady, I have the same GoPro, but I can’t get that steadiness! Thank you so much!
Through the snow, did your feet get wet/soaked thru?
I wanted to love it (loved 3 and 4), but the jacquard upper is way too sloppy for descents and I haven’t managed to get a good lock-in.
Thanks for the review Ryan! Couple of thoughts… im considering switching from altra to hoka. How would you say the toe box feels compared to other brands? And did you have any issues with the durability of the lugs? Im worried they might wear of quick while i have a lot of road approach miles. Thanks again 👍🏻
The toe box on Hoka is always more narrow than most brands, and this one is as well, about the same as other Hoka shoes. The lug durability I can’t comment on yet, but will in my full review soon!!
They made a wide toe box as well!
The two biggest issue was the slight tightness in the beginning of toe box / midfoot area from the stiffness in the upper of the speedgoat 4, and the ankle lock being stiff and rubbing the extensors. I had to do the 2E width because the tightness in midfoot made me not risk long ultra races in regular width. It seems they solved both of these issues with a more forgiving upper. The weight reduction is a really nice addition. Do you feel that the Speedgoat 5 is forgiving in the width if you were a bit uncomfortable in the regular width Speedgoat 4?
Yeah I am with ya on that. To me the 5 just felt like there was more room. I think what was due to the upper material though, not so much there actually being extra room. So for me it worked out great and I'm excited to see how the upper does over time. Yes, much more forgiving of an upper, I just always felt like I was fighting the upper of the 4.
Great review as always....not sure why the tongue is still so thin? I recently completed a 48 miler in the SG4 and really struggled with pain on the top of my foot from the laces? Concerned that the SG5 seems to have the same thickness of tongue? I also run in the Clifton 8's for the road and have no trouble due to the more padded tongue. Is there a reason for having such a thin tongue? or should I where the shoe less tied down?
Yeah I right there with ya. Wishing for a bit more padding but it seems like they are trying to find some weight savings. Clifton 8 tongue is great though!
Thanks for the review! How would you say they fit in terms of both width and length compared to the other two? I’m an 8.5 uk in the 4 and a 9 uk in the evo 🤷♂️
The sizing is the same from what I can tell, but the upper material makes a lot of difference. A bit more flexible, so it has a better fit for me
@@RyanClaytonFilms great thanks so same as the 4 rather than the evo but with a bit more room in upper?
Can’t wait to get a pair. Just praying they have better color ways coming. That blue orang yellow get up just isn’t doing it for me.
haha yeah I hear ya, I actually really like this color way, but to each their own!
would love for you to compare speed goat 5 to tectron X. Suoer exciting stuff thank you
Oh that’s a good idea Justin, thanks!
Can you comment on the length of the SG5 compared to the 4?
I have the 4 and feel them a touch short. Can you compare the insoles?
Length feels the same from the 4 to the 5, and the insoles are very similar if not the same.
Thinking about trying these out for the Camindo de Santiago. If I hit into some rain, will they dry overnight?
Awesome! They will dry as fast as most shoes do if the environment isn’t wet. But while you’re wearing them they don’t hold onto much water
@@RyanClaytonFilms Oh, that's great!!
gimme gimme gimme! pleeease hoka, bring them out before end of march!
Yes!! You should be able to get them on 3/15!
oh that would be sweet, though my domestic market (austria) isn't always first in line. but hey, here's hoping!
@@ozenfant_ozn oh that might be true. Hope you get it soon!
Bloke is it good enough to kut the musturd
I have a “regular” foot (no need for a wide shoe), but a bunion on my right foot. Any opinion on if they would work for me?
They will probably be better than the 4’s because the upper flexes more.
@@RyanClaytonFilms Ha. They sure do. To the point where I can no longer tighten them to get a good lockdown on my foot only after 20 miles or so. I just gave them to a friend because of it.
I've been waiting for this update for a long time. I loved the 3s but did not like the 4 and the evo speedgoat wasn't quite right.
Yeah this one might be the one for you then!
Great review. How’s the PF?
It’s manageable currently. Just waiting on a miracle right now lol. Doing all the things I should be doing, it’s just hanging around 🤷♂️. Thanks!
Did you do this review only after running in snow? Doesn’t really give a clear indication on impact etc… have you been back out on rocks and hard pack?
Trail shoes are not interesting before they have been tested in rain, dirt and wet conditions. They can behave completely different in dry vs wet conditions. But this version of speedgoat looks fire:-)
If there would have been mud, I would have gladly gotten dirty! Luckily some of the snow has been melting the last few days!
Agree but I would add to that steep alpine terrain.
Do you get your feet wet running in the snow?
It really depends on the temperature. If it’s close to 32° F or above then yeah they do get wet, but on this run it was much lower to the snow didn’t really melt on the shoes, just able to brush it off.
I don’t need this shoe, I want this shoe!
Hahaha yes!!
Will there be a wide version dropping at the same time
I believe so, but have not heard confirmation yet.
@@RyanClaytonFilms ok thanks alot
Wide option available ?
There should be 👍
sdg 4 spg5 same size??
Yeah they all feel like the same size
I believe SG4 run a little short, the same for the 5?
I only love my Evo speed goats, 😭😭😭😭😩
But they disappeared them. 😩😩😩
Seriously.. Thanks for the review.
Yes the Evo was a special model, but this one comes close and brings some new exciting features as well
Romans did it in sandals
🥸
Thats true
