I disagree with RFK's emphasis on bringing in private business from outside African American communities. I think what was needed was to find ways to encourage healing and development from within those communities, through efforts led by African Americans. Still, his death was a terrible loss to this country. He was a man of vision and compassion who was uniquely positioned to lead the way forward.
I think bringing in business from outside was the first step. It would actually create opportunities for African Americans to create their own businesses once the area was thriving again.
You don’t have to look far to see the model that Kennedy wanted for urban restoration: Bedford-Stuyvesant in New York City. He initiated a renewal project of that dilapidated ghetto area. As of 2010, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation had constructed or rehabilitated 2200 housing units in the neighborhood, provided mortgage financing to nearly 1500 homeowners, brought $375 million in investments to the community, and created over 20,000 jobs.
What I notice here is genuine reporters asking heavy, consequential questions and a true political leader fielding all of them politely, eloquently and with nuance. Bob Kennedy didn’t lambaste anyone here, he was always respectful to the press and colleagues alike. And Ron Johnson attempts to avoid questions from a reporter by pretending to be on his cell.
The media worked with the Kennedys as to even give them questions in advance to prep their answers. Having said that I'm still a big fan of JFK and RFK.
Yes, Senator RFK was more dynamic than His brother, Jack Kennedy! What a shame for both assassinations! But Robert was more equipped to serve our country! There were plenty of businesses inside Detroit at the time of the riots. Most of tbem closed up afterwards. The ppl brought it upon themselves when they became violent.
He had more class and charisma in his little finger, than most politicians today have in their entire body.
