  • In 2009 Nick Martin quit his job as a developer and tech-savvy person. He packed up his bags and went on to fulfill his own dreams. For him this meant exploring the world. So far he has seen more than 50 countries and lived in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Ecuador, Fiji and New Zealand. His trip took him six years but made him so many experiences richer and wiser. Since then the world traveler is sharing his experiences on his blog “Travel-Echo” and at various events as a public speaker. His message is powerful: “Live life to the fullest. Let me inspire you, to get the best out of your own life.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I envy people like Nick, who manage to live their life to the fullest, particularly when they manage to travel the world. It has been my unfulfilled dream to travel the world, which I could not for various reasons. I do believe travelling far and wide does open our worldview and helps us shed our assumptions and inhibitions about various cultures, people, places. Adventurous traveling is one of the best ways to discover your own self too, as many of my friends who did it told me.

    it’s 12:51 am and i feel worthless. i just realized i am 13 and haven’t inspired anyone, kissed anyone on the lips who wasn’t family, and much more that i hope will happen in life. i have never been the first to tell my true feelings to someone and i have never had a rebellious thing happen in my life. i see searched
    this video not expecting to find anything and i never comment on videos. like ever. but i know this is when i should. tomorrow i am waking up and doing what i want. i am getting dressed in clothes that will make me feel like an absolute goddess and do my makeup. i will have a fancy breakfast and do something that i won’t regret and will remember forever. thank you if you are still reading. i hope everyone feeling worthless and boring does this with me. you got this and so do i. let’s do this. thank you.

      Just breathe and take it slow, life is no movie but it can be. Slowly build yourself and always remind yourself to cut yourself some slack every now and then. Slowly but surely you'll be fine, 13 is very young and that's good! You have all the time to build yourself day by day. Great to hear you're taking the first step, best of luck.

      I am an agoraphobic for the last 15 years but recently I've had a spiritual enlightenment that showed me the true reality of our world and so much more so I signed to volunteer in another country so I'm binging on so many inspirational and spiritual science topics I can. I'm a recovering addict and I learned that if you do anything for 30 days straight it will become a habit. So I used the 30 day method on all mental, consciousness, nature, and all things positive and only things that will add good to our universe.
      Anyone else want to join the volunteer program they even have packages for poor people like me so check out what worked for me. I'm sending good vibes to all who read this. If I can leap and make it out my house to another country it can be done. "Live life without limits"

    I'm pursuing a career in a very tough course but for a while there has been this nagging feeling that this is not what I want, it won't make me happy no matter how much I'd earn in the future. Everyone around me says I have an ability to do this tough course but no one asked me what I really wanted to do. And now I've found my passion and that is art and writing. I know I can do this and after feeling lost for so long, I've decided to live my life in my own terms. So I started an art account and I've promised myself not to look back. I don't want to lie on my deathbed, regretting the life I lived. I'm trusting my gut and following my heart.

    This is such a first world problem. Discontent and desire to be different, to live like a character from a movie. Take a poverty ridden person and give them a sports car and a cosy job and I'm sure they wont be complaining. The only reason you're dissatisfied is because you don't have to survive. You have food, you have basic income and so it gets boring because you have so much time on your hands to overthink. its all about perspective.

      I mean sure, I agree completely, it’s a fact. It is a more-so first world problem. But if you’re in that certain level of privilege where you have a lot of time to overthink and you’re not fulfilled with your situation even if all your needs are covered, then it’s still an applicable problem for those people. Definitely not nearly as bad as those that are fighting to survive, but I think you can still wish for a fulfilling life while being grateful for the privilege you have through having perspective.

      Those people will always live inside you, even when they are gone. And if you go live your life, you will have more to share with them, more to inspire them maybe to make changes to live their own lives with more courage. Out of fear of losing what you have, you end up losing what you (and them) could be. Maybe you can talk about challenges together, maybe your relationship will grow if you dare to act. But you will never know until you jump.

    Martin's key point is that through following our hobbies and taking any risks, we should try to live each day to the maximum. However, despite how motivational the speech may be Martin did not address the disparities in access to opportunities, therefore some individuals would not have the same finances or opportunity to follow their interests and live life to the fullest. In addition, he emphasizes the idea that doing a regular job cannot make us happy, while many individuals may be really content to have stability in their lives.

    All chronically ill, suffering and disabled people just got up and went after it. Dude seems open-minded, but there are people out there by the Billions who are dreaming of the next meal to survive... traveling the world for them comes second. He is young and healthy from a well off country. The latter years of his life may yield a different perspective if medical bills start piling up and he can no longer work like a dog to make up. the message he delivered isn't about traveling or not, in my view, even if you work regularly, you can still do something great, its all about the mindset that chasing the better version of yourself, to live it at fullest, it just sometimes, the work can not fullfil us, deeply inside maybe its just you are lazy, to tell you the truth, the quality of everything you did represents your entire life, go on to the traveling road isn\t gonna change you, but the mindset and the action will

    With all respect, I have travelled a lot, now I'm old and I have no career and no money. I was busy travelling around the world, taking jobs in hospitality to pay for me bills. Now I want a 9 - 5 job to settle down somewhere and it's not easy. I'll have to study something in order to get it. lol

    I’m 15 and I’m happy with my life but I wish I could do more for others but I don’t know how to do that without dropping everything I have built up in my daily life (such as sports, many clubs, and difficult classes). I want to make people happy. Instead of wasting my life away chasing after dreams that will bring me no where.. I want to change, I want to be better for not only myself but also others, but I don’t know where to start....

    • @JD-qo7hm
      @JD-qo7hm 5 років тому +5

      You want to make people happy? The best advice I could give you is to focus on being happy yourself. You're in a very altruistic phase of life. Where you want to fix the world. You're motivated, you have ambition and energy. You're young. It really is a romantic way of being, but as a 27 year old, don't allow yourself to be so naive to believe you're going to change the world. I'm not saying to be selfish. I'm not saying not to care for others. I'm not even saying to give up on bringing joy to others. I am only cautioning you as to how lonely path can be if you forget you're someone who deserves the same joy you hope to inspire in others. Its silly to say "instead of wasting my life away chasing dreams," because you think you can do it all. You're 15 and invincible. But when you live that way and you achieve adulthood you'll find yourself looking back and wondering "what about me?"
      To bring it all together, do well in school. Pursue your passion. Create a life for yourself that supports YOU in a way that allows yourself to do the altruistic things you claim to want to do. Do not martyr yourself in the name of serving others. Exalt yourself! Raise yourself up to a point where you're able to care for others BECAUSE you've taken care of yourself so well!
      Be yourself, read, and take opportunities that make your heart sing. Challenge yourself to do the HARD thing when presented with two choices. Forgive yourself when you fail. Have the strength to get back up and try again. And let yourself celebrate when you succeed. Life happens once, you owe it to yourself to explore what it means to be alive.

    This is a powerful talk. I admire you for taking the challenge to learn about things at the extreme, but at the same time you learn how to pursue your dream, to make the best of the journey by being Resourceful, love yourself and others, Respect, and knowing how to take care of yourself and always achieve momentum by being Responsible. Just curious, is this adventure all powered by you alone as a human in a vast land, or is God behind it all? The reason that I asked this question is that there would always be things happened beyond our control in our life, a no way out situation, ie, life or death, etc..., so we have to ask for the Divine to help or to lead us the best way possible.

  • @siunegu

    I see this talk as more if you have a dream and it’s a burning desire you should pursue it, if you can. Not to say just travel with no money in your bank account. He said he worked hard to save some money to make it possible. And it was risky, he was hurt during his travels and that friend who wanted to become a photographer, may have done so also due to chance. The world isn’t so romantic, life is realistic. It depends on your passion for something, it will drive you through the dark times.

    This is all well and fine until you become the primary caretaker for a disabled brother and elderly mother. You have to have ZERO attachments and essentially no one depending on you to help them with daily living activities to live his kind of lifestyle. Some of us have actual RESPONSIBILITIES and can’t just cut bait and run around the world on a whim. Must be nice.

      @Naiane - actually, I did listen to the whole thing. And again, it’s based on the premise that you have the freedom to pursue your dreams. Before you judge me, walk a mile in my shoes. My Mother and Brother are completely dependent on me to handle their affairs. I have no other siblings and my Father is deceased. I do the best I can to enjoy life, but it always revolves around meeting their needs FIRST! You probably have ZERO or limited responsibility in life other than yourself. Come back to me when you’re in my situation.

    • @vacantbags6626
      @vacantbags6626 5 років тому +25

      aeromedical67 It sounds like you don’t really want to take care of either of them and it’s more of a chore. Which is ok, I’d imagine taking care of anyone would induce misery after a while. However really there’s nothing tying you to them. You choose to stay because either they you love them and really want to spend your life doing that, or the guilt of leaving them would hurt you too much to bear, either way it’s because you find it meaningful and important to do so. Next time you feel “must be nice” take some pride in how you spend your life. You choose to help the helpless and that’s admirable.

      @YEET 692001 - you are correct and I need to take the time to count my blessings. There are always people in more difficult circumstances. There are just times when taking care of dependent relatives becomes a little overwhelming. It’s hard when you don’t have others to fall back on.

    Here’s where this falls apart for 99% of humans. It’s a proven fact that if you’re cute, good looking, handsome, beautiful, pretty, and humble and throw in a accent and a little muscular? Doors OPEN! If Fatty comes along, or String Bean with a Stutter, You get the idea here doors do not open very easily and you really have to be someone special for things to work for you. After being a CEO for almost 40 years It took me 10 years to believe that the locals weren’t just coming because we had a cute clean and great food eatery it was the servers looks that was the draw. 3 of them my sisters at the beginning and then I hired a heavy set older woman. With in WEEKS I lost 40% of business. Not because she was a terrible server. She was one of the best i ever had waiting on guests. But she wasn’t a knock out. So, if the AVERAGE person wants to quit their job with NO money but the clothes on their back they will continue to suffer on their journey. The Good looking young people can sleep their way or flaunt their way and in some cases just be humble with an accent and mean well and most people will open their doors for them. Because everyone wants to teach and be liked and seen with good looking people. When I was 18 19 and early 20’s I was considered tall good looking, ( I never thought I was) but I would take my grandmother out 2 - 3 times a week for a nice ride and dinner. I loved making her smile. She lived in a big apartment complex. When the people knew I was coming it would take me 30 minutes to get to grams door because of the older folk and their kids or grand children would always want to talk to me and they’d even be their when we got back like gram was the queen. I was happy for her feeling special. If that was me today 40 years later no one would come out or care. For 1 I am not 20 anymore and two society is all about the ME generation. I would love to stop working and travel the world meet all kinds of new people. But the doors would be closed for me who don’t drink anymore. Doors do open easier when you can loosen up with liqueur. But to those of us who are Str8 we are “boring” I can’t rock climb, or surf, or even run.
