God's Love is unconditional. Even if you curse, it doesn't have any bearing on how much God loves you. This goes for Christians and Non-Christians alike. God Loves you all.
NO WAY!! When I first heard this version on Sufjan Stevens' Christmas album, all I thought was how much I would love to hear Mumford & Sons do it. Thanks to whomever thought to put this on UA-cam. For real, you totally made my day!!
Guys, can we just fathom in the sound, in the beauty, and melody of this beautiful little hymn? If you're for God, you're for God, but if you are not, then you are not. I don't have a care if you are Christian, Pagan, or Atheistic, but I do care about these guys, something I think we can all agree on as being a true sign of beautiful music. :)
This is my favorite hymn ever, and Mumford & Son's take is absolutely wonderful. I prefer hymns in High Church fashion, but Mumford & Sons managed to make me absolutely love this version despite my normal dislike of this style.
What I like about Mumford & Sons is that they're so real and that is reflected whole heartily in their music too. If they do have swearing in any of their songs it's to help convey the real down to earth feelings of the song, in an uncensored way. They are not fakers hiding behind censorship.
I am a Christian. I am human. I have sinned. We all fall short of the glory of God. Jesus came for the sinner. The lost sheep. Every saint has a past, every sinner a future. I was very happy to find this song. You can feel the spirit in their music regardless. Anything with that much heartfelt emotion to me is the spirit. They're artists. Perhaps in trying to convey the intensity of the emotion behind the cuss word was the intent, not to be sinful. Judge not lest you be judged. Don't cast stones
Anyone who praises God - without satire - praises God. To look to any artist as an infallible example is foolish, but to be thankful for fellow humankind choosing to praise God with song is edifying to them, others and ourselves. I would love to hear Mumford & Sons record an album of old-time hymns as well.
Nothing can defeat God's love or forgiveness for us. No matter of cussing can defeat Him. Nothing we do will separate His love from us. He defeated all our filth, sin and hypocrisy because we could not.
I beleve that no one on earth can describe or show someone God- which is love, grace, peace, mercy, and all the good in our world; we can only try our best to, but the experience (for lack of a better word) of finding God happens indivudially. This song is truely beautiful so please- listen to this song and its words, look out your window at the world and think about life. Be happy!
Words are words, and thats all they ever will be. They write what is in their hearts, i think we all know that. And if their hearts tell them to say some words that the public views as "Vulgar" then so be it. Mumford & Sons are simply the best
Appreciate your comments poidog776. I would say that we all worship - just a matter of who or whom or what we worship. We can't help but to worship. Love Mumford and Sons music. Was glad to come across their rendition of this hymn.
God didn't create sin, sir. He created a man with free will, and that man chose to use his free will to sin. God created FREE WILL not evil. That's how I understand it... If you choose (with the free will God himself gave you) to deny His existence, then there's not much more I can say.
As a non believer myself, the reason I listen to it is because I like the music. Just because there is an element of worship doesn't mean that I should not appreciate good music. I'm not commenting to challenge Christianity, I'm just trying to explain what you said you didn't understand. If you find love in faith, good for you; whatever helps you find meaning in your life.
This is why I love Mumford and Sons. The human condition is full of weird dualities. We crave the sacred and the profane. We experience joy and pain with equal fervor. Half of us worship, half of us are non-believers. Why does art have to pick a side? Why can't music represent both the worshipful and the skeptic? I think Mumford and Sons understand the complexity of being a human, which is why one song needs to be radio-edited and another is praising Christ. I think it's tastefully done.
I agree with African Thunder - as this song so eloquently states, we are all prone to wander! We all need His unchanging love and grace to keep us close to him!
Even praise sung by the lips of fools is greater than not at all. My hats off to you Mumford and Sons just for doing it and doing it well. Thank you for this song.
I'm actually very happy to see interesting and fairly mature discussion in the comments of a UA-cam song, despite the fact that I usually hate it when people get into such discussions using these mediums -- these kinds of discussions are how Christians grow and learn! I do want to throw in here that you all should try to keep this as friendly and respectful as possible because being right isn't worth being harsh. Hopefully someone will read this and keep it in mind. Also, enjoy the music. ^^
I LOVE this song. It makes me all the happier that Mumford and Sons sang it. I always knew that they were Christian. Maybe not with the label, but their lyrics say it all. Admittedly, I was drawn aback by the swearing in "Lion Man" but hey, I'm a Christian going to college for ministry, and I have said the same word. Even if they do regret it now its un-erasable. Christians are supposed to keep other Christians in check, not judge them. They are called to focus on the sick, not the healthy. :)
Marcus Mumford was raised in the church. His father is a preacher. He only says the worked "f*cked" in one song, for emphasis. I'm sure he has some sort of spirituality but in his other songs he sings of struggles he's had with his religion, just like any human being willing to admit to their mistakes. This is a beautiful song, I want it to be played folk style at my wedding next year.
I believe in the God this man is singing about. I could walk you through the science and spew apologetic's from my mouth, but understand, faith is greater. When I die it won't be for apologetic's. It will be for faith.
Mumford and Sons are great because they don't define themselves as Christians which in turn allows their music to reach the nonchristian/non-religious people. Whether or not they listen to the truth in the music is up to them, but at least they have the chance to know that there is someone who cares about them. PS. Awake My Soul is amazing, don't let the title scare you, its really good if you ever feel like the world sucks.
"Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. ... For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil." (Rom. 14:13, 15-16)
thank you so much! everybody slips up somtimes and i don't understand why some people think cussing is the worst thing ever because all sins are equal in Gods eyes. why is it that i can tell a little white lie and every thing is fine but you can't mess up when it comes to talking. don't judge somebody because they sin differently than you.
What you just expressed is almost if not exactly how I feel when I listen to Mumford and Sons. Something else that I like, specifically about Marcus though,is that feeling that he's letting everyone view his personal struggles with his faith through the songs. When I listen to a lot of his compositions I get this sensation that he craves to be close to God but at the same time he's at a point in his life where he has a lot of questions he can't find answers too. Who knows. Do you ever feel that?
I haven't heard about the events you speak of. However I do know that in one of their latest interviews he said that mumford and sons "are fans of faith, not religion." This man, is the most complex, poetic, philosophical, faithful and undeniably mysterious song writer I have ever seen.
"On that day when freed from sinning, I shall see thy loving face, clothed then in blood washed linen, how Ill sing thy boundless grace" the little known final verse by Robert Robinson. Robinson, an English Baptist minister, lost his father around the age of 5, was sent to labor in London as a teenage, possessed a sharp mind. The Lord found him after a drunken binge and forged him into a life of ministry. He wrote this song in his early 20s as a testament of his conversion experience.
I agree with you, but it is part of our belief that we should spread the word about God. Though I also believe there is a point when we just have to back off and let people decide on their own.
This sounds like they're doing a cover of the version of the hymn by Sufjan Stevens. Anyone heard his version? Love this one too. It just reminds me a LOT of that one. :)
Wish mumford and sons would release a hymnal album...would be so awesome... And bring back the ol' banjo
"Prone to wander, Lord I feel it.
Prone to leave the God I love."
Gets me every time.
yep. that's the line.
Sweet forgiveness
Story of my life
I have never related to any sentence more in my life. Every time. And I sing this one literally daily.
I love that line. Even stole it and put it to one of my songs. "Prone to wander." Hopefully if it's ever published, I won't get sued.
im an atheist. i love mumford ans sons. and i love this version of this song. i even catch myself singing it throughout the day.
I really wish they'd put this on an album or even as a single
Amen!
O God of Second Chances and New Beginnings, here I am again.
+Sateki Taulanga ego vos absolvo ab omnibus peccatoribus vestris In nomine Patris, et Fillii, et Spiritus Sanctus. Amen.

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love......streams of mercy, never ceasing..call for songs of loudest praise!
Linda Moore Those are the lines that rend my pride every time I hear this song...no matter who sings it, even me.
A Tearjerker, for sure!
This is my favorite hymnal. Whenever I hear this version of the song I keep reminiscing back to my mission trips, truly a great feeling :)
Amen!! Thank you Mumford and sons, I'm always glad to hear ppl praising the Father

Dude i'm not even christian and, i just want you to know that you speak VERY wise words. Thank you.
Anyone who praises God - without satire - praises God. To look to any artist as an infallible example is foolish, but to be thankful for fellow humankind choosing to praise God with song is edifying to them, others and ourselves.

“’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”
I'm not anything close to a good christian, but this is beautifully written and is sung here with genuine emotion. Excellent song.
Nothing can defeat God's love or forgiveness for us. No matter of cussing can defeat Him. Nothing we do will separate His love from us. He defeated all our filth, sin and hypocrisy because we could not.

Return to the Lord. He will accept even the worst of us with arms open.
He accepted you and me, Andrew

You can't be this good without the support of God, the almighty maker.
Not sure why there aren't more likes and comments on this song, but this version of this hymn is just awesome

I’m an atheist but this was really nice. Mumford and Sons can sing just about anything and it be beautiful.
“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.” (Psalm 145:13)
Mumford and sons fans always get along in the comments... Love you guys!
Even praise sung by the lips of fools is greater than not at all. My hats off to you Mumford and Sons just for doing it and doing it well. Thank you for this song.
No day better than a day I find another Mumford and Sons song
Thank you Mumford & Sons. Wonderfully done!
"Our hearts are restless, Lord, until they rest in thee." -- Saint Augustine. Bless all and Happy Advent!!

Ahhh the Sufjan Stevens arrangement! One of my favorite Hymns of all time!
Mumford and Sons. Singing my favorite hymn. Could my day get any better? :)
It's 04/21/2022 and this is still my all time favorite version of this song.
Best version I've ever heard.
I LOVE this song. It makes me all the happier that Mumford and Sons sang it. I always knew that they were Christian. Maybe not with the label, but their lyrics say it all. Thank you. My Aunt passed away this morning, and this was...perfect.
Christian or not, it's a beautiful piece of music. Let's not argue but enjoy and love.
I've always loved this song and i don't care if Mumford and sons swear...its a BEAUTIFUL song and that's all that should matter
Mumford and sons just rock every song they do
AAAAHHHHHH I DIDN'T THINK I COULD EVER FIND SOMETHING SO PERFECT AHHH soo good
I love Mumford & Sons! I love that they love the LORD too :D
I believe in the God this man is singing about. I could walk you through the science and spew apologetic's from my mouth, but understand, faith is greater. When I die it won't be for apologetic's. It will be for faith.
This is a wonderful take on this Hymn. Love it. God Bless you guys.
We sang this during my sister's wedding!

Thank you for Sharing the words! So beautiful and something I really needed to hear.
So beautiful! I can't stop listening!!

I was listening to Rosie Dias's version and this was suggested. Such a great song!

You guys don't get enough credit!! You are so awesome ! I wanna be like you guys!
from wikipedia: Robert Robinson penned the words at age 22 in the year 1757
a man full of the Spirit!!
amen brother, I'm an atheist and a mumford and sons lover too

Exactly. Not painting over the struggle. Show our hearts to God. Not letting man get us down with a perfect performance. Just as it is. God Save Us!
One of my favorite Hymns by one of my favorite bands!
This is amazing.

I Love It. I think they should do an album of old time hymns
This is totally my favorite song~!!
Keep up the voices to our God!
I love love love this! They're amaaaaaaaazing!
this is probably one of my favorite songs that we sing at my church.
How am I just now hearing this?? Amazing cover.
Just found this. Thanks so much for sharing :-)

I'm an official agnostic. Still love Mumford and Sons.
Well said, I totally agree. I love that they are just real.
beautiful.
Everlasting love, bind my wandering heart to thee
wow this song is amazing!!!
Nice, thanks! 'Stone of help', such an interesting concept... will defo check the context.
amazing song!
i love these guys Marcus is awesome!!!!!
I agree with you, but it is part of our belief that we should spread the word about God. Though I also believe there is a point when we just have to back off and let people decide on their own.
Thank you, my friend. I will remember that. :))
Love this!!!
Anyone else pleasantly surprised by this? :D
This sounds like they're doing a cover of the version of the hymn by Sufjan Stevens. Anyone heard his version? Love this one too. It just reminds me a LOT of that one. :)
That's my favorite version of the song! :3
Yes, clearly a cover of the Sufjan version
Tristan Bach but its Sufjan's arrangement.
in another video of this cover Marcus says it's the Sufjan Stevens arrangement.
Thank you
YES! Finally.
wow i love this song!
Lovely rendition.
Beautiful!
Wish i could find a HD version :(
