After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. The wheelsnoheels message is “so no one has to feel alone.”
I have lots of interesting disability videos, a lot of videos on how to cope with a disability and living life in a wheelchair, wether you are a girl boy woman or man. i have some paraplegic exercise videos, and advice. its important to keep your fitness levels up as much as possible as this can when physically and mentally with depression.
If you feel I have given you value today consider buying me a ko-fi, just think of it as a tip.

UPDATE: just returned from typhoon lagoon yesterday and they said all water wheelchairs had broken and we're no longer being offered. So disappointing.
I'm not a wheelchair user, however when I was pregnant, I learned that off to the side, there is built in seating in the rocks at the Typhoon lagoon wave pool. You still get to enjoy the waves without being thrown around.
Just thought that might be helpful if you decide to go back.
This video is so helpful as my fiance will be wheelchair bound during our next trip do to a recent surgery.

The Disney Type Oi I hate when people get so butthurt over words. by defintion wheelchair bound is technically correct. I mean serious saying or writing full time wheelchair user just sounds way over the top to be a PC queen.

    • @janelliz
      @janelliz 5 років тому +20

@@kither04 it's really okay. I fully understand why my original wording may come across in a negative manner. The word "bound" can come off as meaning "stuck, captive, or limited" to some.
So I was happy to reword my comment. Plus she asked nicely. 👍

hello, I’m sure different countries have different terms. I only mentioned it because it’s what I have been taught at various disabilities awareness training sessions at work and I found the terms useful in customer service. Eg: ‘do you you your wheelchair full-time or part-time?’
I wasn’t intending to call you out :)

The only time i ever cried about realizing my disability was limiting me was the day we drove by the water park. We went there many times as a kid and i always enjoyed it ; Especially the slides. That day was the first day i realized that my new disability meant I would never get to do a waterslide again. I googled for accessible waterparks and, at the time, the only one available was a splash park meant for children in texas. I was heartbroken. I never wanted to go down a waterslide more than when I realized I probably never would again. Seeing this today let loose so many of those emotions. Even if I never make it to that park, knowing it’s not off limits is so freeing. Im so thankful for you making this video!

I’m going to be participating in the Disney College Program as a cast member this fall, and I love your videos! They’re super insightful hearing what worked for you and what didn’t so that when I go down I know what I can try to do to help guests when it comes to accessibility!

Consider getting a shotgun mic for your phone, like the Deity mics. It's a huge improvement for not a lot of cost.
Happy to see you bring more awareness of the need for wheelchair access and helping people know what to expect

Love your videos Gem, they have helped me so much! One question, how to you manage the stairs in your home, do you have a lift or stair climber?

My partner and I are both disabled. He walks but I use a wheelchair. Our combined income goes mostly to the costs of having a disability so no vacation gonna happen. I live in the US where healthcare sucks. But I love watching you have fun and I have gorgeous swimming spots in my community

loved watching this video, it reminded me when I use to take my children on holidays etc, however I've never done a water park, purely because I don't like my legs on show and feet and people staring when I struggle, so I totally have huge respect that you done this. however you have a nice pair of legs, if mine looked like yours maybe I wouldn't feel so embarrassed. thank you for your video.

The US really knows how to cater for us wheelchair users, found that out when we went to Orlando years ago, still had a ride or two i couldnt get on but i wasnt too bothered, Much better than back here in the UK, just got back from Blackpool last week and there wasnt one ride i could get on. Not that im a fan of things like roller coasters anyway, but you would think the slower ones would be accessible, nope!!.

That’s so awesome!! The waterparks here in Arizona only allow for wheel chair users to use the lazy rivers. One park I will never return to. My family got me into a tube and they went off on the rides. After a bit my back couldn’t take the tube anymore and I kept asking the lifeguards to please have some one help me get out. I circled for over half an hour in tears crying from the pain before my family came back and was shocked to find me in that state. I was in so much pain we all had to leave. I can’t do the wave pools. The waves are too painful on my back. I wish they allowed you to have those sit in tubes that I saw others using in the lazy rivers. That would be so much more comfortable and I could get in and out of them on my own. I bought a float that you put on like a diaper (for lack of other description) and you can sit upright in it and it supports your full weight to use with the donut shape floats that they make you use in the lazy river at the other park we go to. It’s still very awkward because I can’t see over the tube because of how low in the water I sit in my own float. I think I will call this summer and ask if I can bring in my own seated float to use and explain my disability. I have hEDS with a slew of comorbid disorders. My spine is needing to be fused and my hips replaced. I’ve been a power chair user for 11 years now.

Great video, amazing quality, ... may I ask what go pro you use? We were at art of animation from 7-14-18 to 7-30-18 and went to Typhoon Lagoon twice for their after hours party .. i forget what its called... but our go pro 5 black footage didnt seem as nice but it could have had something to do with low light... again love your video

You should try Storyland in New Hampshire, USA. It’s very accessible and fun for all ages. I go every year (not in a wheelchair) but it’s fun for my parents and my sister and I.

LOL the bum shuffle is how I get up and down the 9 steps to my front door when I can't walk down them. I'm an ambulant wheelchair user, so can walk depending on the day, with varying levels of ability.

I basically live at the Disney World parks so I do know quite a few things about each one. Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon both have an accessible Shower area/Changing room for wheelchair users in the Women's changing areas (not possitive for men, but since they have one for women I assume they also have one for men). The shower part has two sections with two different curtains. When you first walk in to one of the rooms that is considered the changing area and has a bench for sitting on the left hand side. Past the first small area is a second section which is the shower part and it has a second curtain you can close as well. In the shower area there is a shower chair to the left that folds down and right next to it is a handheld shower head to wash yourself with. Each shower area has some form of soap/shampoo to wash with as well. However, when I was at the one in blizzard beach the mechanism that holds the shower head was broken so you had to hold the shower head the whole time or leave it dangling. Not sure if they have or will fix it. I hope this helps you and your subscribers/followers.

Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard I don’t think there are any videos on this topic yet. Before my first Disney trip as an adult last year I looked up all of the accessability info I could. What I could find on the water parks was very limited.

I went there just last year as well! Haha I wonder if we went around the same time! I was only able to get on the lazy river because I didn't know one of the water slides was accessible!! If I had known I would've gotten on the first water slide you went to since it seemed like the least scary. Loved the water park though.

Wet'n'Wild is a pretty cool place, I can move my legs and all so I just moved my wheelchair up to the shore, then dragged myself in. It's a waterpark though so I don't expect a lot of wheelchair users, of course, and that's why it wasn't too easy to get in and out.
