No words can express what an inspiration Shane was for the downtrodden, abused, misunderstood, homeless, addicts, and love of poignant, meaningful music created by him and his band members! A true giant alongside Dylan, Cave, Sinead and many others. A sad loss, but an inevitable loss.😔
@lesjohnson, Except Dylan was not not averse to stealing others work when it suited his drive for money. So I do not think he is "alongside" McGowan or Cave.
Dylan has had more of his songs covered than any other artist on the planet, maybe only the Bee Gees could get near him (dare I mention them here) and he certainly never covered or stole any other artist's work, maybe in his early days, Woody Guthrie was his inspiration. Many of Shane's songs were covers, brilliant versions no doubt, but please don't knock the greatest poet, songwriter of our times. @@ccahill2322

Irishmen in London, surviving and escaping poverty, but drinking and womanising and falling and rising and falling again, losing themselves in the gold rush, the bombings, and the homesickness... You got home eventually Dom, and all things considered, the scrapes and cells and broken bones, to pass in your sleep on Irelands wild west coast ain't too bad cousin... I'll see you again someday.

While Ray and Philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams, the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
So drunk to hell I left the place
Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal

Many, many thanks to the great Pogues and the lovable Shane MacGowan, an Irishman to the core. 💚

and the birds where whistling in the trees, while the wind was gently laughing has got to be one of the best lyrics just ever. I keep playing it on repeat.
pure class "the birds were whistling in the trees where the wind was gently laughing"
Unreal lyricism
My favourite line in it

When this guy here passes. Itll be a truly sad day for music and an even sadder day for Britain. What an underrated gem. Merry Christmas, buddy. We're still here with you in 2022🍀🎄🌍🗽
Are you joking? Shane will outlive us all.

The Irish have received a few body blows in 2023. A couple of music favourites lost and all the trouble in Dublin. Hope they keep producing wonderful art that truly expresses the place and the people.
Viva l'Irlanda e viva i suoi figli!
è bellissimo, amico! sin fear álainn!
God bless 🇮🇪
