Genesis has exceeded expectations and climbed up in the luxury class. Unfortunately, people tend to subjectively shop cars for prestige first then designs after. Genesis needs to maintain its beautiful engineering for a few more years to get further reputable attention. People will still go for Germans and Lexus because they’ve been around for a while.
My only issue is calling that a coupe. I know they didn't start it (looking at you, BMW X6), but the FAR better word would be "Fastback" So much sexier than calling a 4 door softroader a "coupe"

I test drove a couple of these when I was SUV shopping in 2022. Ultimately we went with a Durango SRT however. The interior space is quite a bit lower quality but the powertrain and rear seating space more than makes up for it. I just can't help but feel like if you're getting a car this size you should have the option to occasionally seat 6 normal sized humans for those edge cases where you might need to.
The prior interior looked AGES better than this new one... Saw it in person and am not impressed! It's as if they got creative in cutting corners without making it look too obvious.

I love the Genesis GV80 Coupe; however, I hate the way that the dealer network is set up right now. It's basically handled like just another Hyundai---which, for a segment like this, you don't really want. If you want to compete with Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, or even Infiniti, you gotta completely separate the luxury brands from their sister "consumer" brands.

I think all hyundai/genesis products look and drive above average but the questionable reliability is still hanging over their heads. Lexus is boring in comparison but has a proven track record of reliability. Meanwhile hyundai, kia and genesis have electrical gremlins and engine implosions at sub 50k miles. My neighbor parks his on the street because of all the fire recalls... lol
Yea still hanging. Although as of 2020, they came out with all 'new' engines. Like the 3.5 has both GDI and MPI to avoid carbon buildup. But only time will tell. I hope they can put it behind, the competition is good for consumers, whether people like the cars or not.
I dunno about those Factor meals. I’m more of a Swanson’s TV Dinner guy, myself. The only problem is the sparks coming from the aluminum tray when I microwave them. But the sparks entertain my wife’s boyfriend’s dog.

Hyundai needs to figure out their place in the industry. Lexus came out and had a vision of who they wanted to be(dealer experience, reliability and price), Hyundai came out and just tried to make a poor man’s German car but priced them very close to the Germans. Why not just buy a BMW or MERCEDES.
@@MikeForsytheActually I do, including many others, having owned exclusively BMW, Mercedes, and Audi until recently. Only douche brand snobs would think like you.

Genesis has absolutely killed it since they entered the market and they have only improved year after year. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, all Genesis cars are sold through Hyundai dealerships which have some of the worst reputations in the US. Once the honeymoon phase wears off and you start having issues with the car, the only thing that matters is the service you have to fix the car you tied up $30-$80k in. Getting lied to, scammed, dragged through the mud, etc ruins any experience no matter how nice the car is.
Well to counter what you said, Acura and Lexus came out with bats swinging. Legend beat the Germans, NSX beat the Italians and Lexus nailed the S class for cheaper.
@@rahimi4762 How exactly does the fact that Japanese brands have hit some home runs over the years take the stench off the purgatory of a Hyundai dealership experience? I'll take my answer off the air.
I have had two Genesis Coupes under the Hyundai badge, a Genesis sedan and currently a GV70 Sport Plus, I have enjoyed each of these vehicles with no issues but the GV70 is my favourite......the GV70 is a great size, awesome performance in any weather, great ride, super Lexicon sound system, quiet and most of all my dealer experience is excellent! I'm pushing 80,000 km, I love driving and I have had the pleasure of being behind the wheel of some very expensive rigs but overall the GV70 and Genesis in general gives the competition a reason to worry........thanks!
Bought a 2022 GV80 Prestige back in February of 2022. While I enjoyed the car, it was in the shop more than I drove it. After 30k miles, no loaner vehicles, poor customer service after buying the car, and Genesis mechanics trying to convince me that my dash cam is causing engine failure, I dumped it. Nice cars, but I will never buy another.
@johnholst Well, not 8 years...maybe 4. There are some significant issues with the rear end on all their vehicles. Go9gle rear differentials, eLSD and torque converters... I've had two rear different replaced on my 2023 GV70.
@dalehuhtala9285 8 years in other markets. And I have read about the issues you mentioned, but only in Korea. We're like their guinea pigs! Test out everything here first.
It is apparently a real pain in the ol' patootie to pull off. GM has punted on it and soon, I would guess, many other companies will too. Software engineers must be in sort supply in the automotive world.
It's possible in some areas like technology available for cheaper, powerful drivetrains, etc. But none of my Acura ever caught on fire, or my Honda products, not even lawn cate or generators or pumps. None of my family Lexus or Toyota ever caught fire 🔥....but.....
I appreciate that Hyundai put so much effort in building this brand from scratch but the character and language of this brand seems a bit fake and tacky. They are trying too hard look like an affordable Bentley from the grille, the quilt pattern and even down to the logo. At least Lexus, Acura, Infiniti has carved out a vision of what Japanese luxury can be; even though they are slacking a bit in recent years.
Just say no to that frozen matte paint. I have it on my motorcycle, and it looks great, but it's really sensitive. It's not too much of a bother on something as small as a bike, but on an SUV...forget it.
@avery4528 - came here to say that. If you get a matte paint, you definitely need a matte ppf wrap. However, if you do that, you may as well save the money of the matte paint and get a regular paint and do the matte ppf wrap. The look will be the same. But then, you could choose the nice red or blue and have that as a matte color, which they don't have as an option.
Seems to be a common theme with the Genesis where they nail the interior, design, materials, good infotainment etc. but they just simply don’t put the money into the drivetrain and suspension like the Germans do. For most, not a big deal but that’s the difference when you are talking about $75-$85k.
I am surprised you did not comment much about the B & O sound system. New MDX buyers are feeling underwhelmed coming from previous Acuras with ELS so I am wondering 🤔
I really like Genesis products. My only gripes are: 1. Price 2. How they drive Now, my second gripe I don’t know for sure, as I’ve never driven them. But I do have family members who have a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. It’s a nice and comfortable SUV. Really not many complaints with it at all. Long road trips are great in it. BUT you can tell how cheap it is in comparison to other manufacturers, when driving it. The steering is numb. The lane assist works, but is finicky sometimes. Stuff like this. Just all-around, you can tell it’s made cheaper and uses cheaper parts on the driving experience aspect, but the interior is really nice and no complaints there. So, are Genesis products like Hyundai products in that sense? Where you feel how cheaply it’s made when you drive them, or do they feel rock solid like a Lexus does? Are the safety denatures like adaptive cruise, lane assist, ABS, etc. top notch to quite such a high price tag? Those are things I would like to know.
DRIVETRAIN problems mentioned at 13:29...I was ready to sign on a GV80 two weeks ago. They are incredible cars. Ended up on a Genesis forum and learned that a massive amount of these are experiencing transmission failure early on. This is the previous models, but it might be the same tech in the 2025 one. A bit scary to dive with that lingering so I backed out. Otherwise these are stellar cars in every way. Still disheartened because I was ready to purchase. But reliability is important especially at this price point, and resale is an issue too.
To my eye genesis has the best blend of exterior and interior style on the market. Their stuff stands out from the herd and having been inside multiple models, the fit and finish as well as materials are very solid. Unfortunately their powertrains are not as refined or powerful as the German competition, hopefully a huge slice of the engineering budget is going into that for upcoming models.
Have the 2025 GV80 and 2023 BMW 3 SUV. Best of both worlds. Friends say GV80 is the smoothest quietest SUV ever been in. Being a passenger in the BMW is not so great. Unless you’re the one driving it to appreciate its sportiness.
6:55 regularly it gets lost in translation as to what the electric supercharger is here, thanks to all the hybrid marketing. The 407 hp V6 is a compound charged engine. I've been up with my 7 week old since 4am and haven't slept a second. The second your video was cast onto the TV she descended into a deep calm slumber. I'm not sure what this means for your newborn demographic/metrics.
Probably like a lot of other people watching this, I like the design, features, and price point BUT.....I'd probably pass on it because of quality concerns.
the hat trick of the supercharger is supposedly that it improves throttle response. no mention of this in the video. perhaps the real reason that engine exists is to generate a high markup trim for customers that just want to pay extra for the best.
They said it improved throttle response but did so in a very artificial way that they would recommend the base twin turbo over the SC engine. It actually improve the terrible gas mileage a smidge too.

@@savagegeese I hope this is fake... You have in your description the MDX. To be comparable in price to the GV80 it would be the Type S variant (which isn't a one off - they have it for the 2025 model year). More importantly, the main part of my comment is that you barely mention Acura or Lexus and focus mostly on the Germans - so you title should more accurately reflect that. Right?
@@davidlehr9213 eh, the title is just a title. Genesis wants to compete with segment leading German cars, and that ends up being how the discussion goes. Luckily there are many other videos from Savagegeese about the GV80 comparing it to the other non-german luxury cars
@@air-headedaviator1805 Yep it isn't a big deal for me, but worth pointing out to them since it is their job. If I sent a report to my boss titled Corporate Restructuring Proposal and it actually was about a marketing campaign I don't think it would go over well. Titles are kinda helpful for UA-cam videos right?
@@savagegeeseI'm sure Mark and Jack already knows this, but you shouldn't always trust what a marketing department has to say about anything really.
Their main job/function is to spin a narrative that furthers their company's agenda, regardless of whether it's true or not.
They aren’t reputable because they depreciate harder than all of the others and are horribly unreliable with recalls every month.
I’m always going to see genesis people as “couldn’t or didn’t want to get a luxury car but got a luxury car anyway” segment.
genesis' biggest problem right now is their dealer network, or lack of.

My only issue is calling that a coupe. I know they didn't start it (looking at you, BMW X6), but the FAR better word would be "Fastback" So much sexier than calling a 4 door softroader a "coupe"
Thank you! The definition of coupe requires the vehicle to have two doors, a sloped roofline does not mean it is a coupe.

First time in a while I've actually not skipped an ad
So what did you buy after the Genesis?
What do you think on the reliability in the gv80?
There's no reason to think it won't be great. This doesn't come with the DCT and their engines have been solid for more than 8 years.
@johnholst Well, not 8 years...maybe 4. There are some significant issues with the rear end on all their vehicles. Go9gle rear differentials, eLSD and torque converters... I've had two rear different replaced on my 2023 GV70.

It's possible in some areas like technology available for cheaper, powerful drivetrains, etc. But none of my Acura ever caught on fire, or my Honda products, not even lawn cate or generators or pumps. None of my family Lexus or Toyota ever caught fire 🔥....but.....
Not true about Lexus/Toyota. They do catch fire and even explode now! No Genesis has ever done that.
As far as storage space goes a nice reference would be what size t.v can fit in the trunk that should be a benchmark
Everyone knows Genesis surpassed Acura years ago. But Mark has this weird thing for Acura.
Just say no to that frozen matte paint. I have it on my motorcycle, and it looks great, but it's really sensitive. It's not too much of a bother on something as small as a bike, but on an SUV...forget it.
Yeah, if you must a frozen paint you're probably better off wrapping a standard gloss metallic car with a satin paint protection film.
@@avery4528My thoughts exactly.
Yeah, that just seems like a bad idea on the exterior of a car.
Seems to be a common theme with the Genesis where they nail the interior, design, materials, good infotainment etc. but they just simply don’t put the money into the drivetrain and suspension like the Germans do. For most, not a big deal but that’s the difference when you are talking about $75-$85k.
Always thought it was funny that Genesis calls the platform for G80 M3 and BMW calls the platform for M3 G80.
I am surprised you did not comment much about the B & O sound system. New MDX buyers are feeling underwhelmed coming from previous Acuras with ELS so I am wondering 🤔
I really like Genesis products. My only gripes are:
1. Price
2. How they drive
Now, my second gripe I don’t know for sure, as I’ve never driven them.
Unless you’re the one driving it to appreciate its sportiness.

the hat trick of the supercharger is supposedly that it improves throttle response. no mention of this in the video. perhaps the real reason that engine exists is to generate a high markup trim for customers that just want to pay extra for the best.
They said it improved throttle response but did so in a very artificial way that they would recommend the base twin turbo over the SC engine. It actually improve the terrible gas mileage a smidge too.
