actually the main problem is "decreased creativity" the problem for AAA games is that they don't dare to leave their comfort zone. and the problem of indie games is the lack of experience. so there are still many shortcomings. but the most important thing is the fun that don't lose

Yeah, they both have shortcomings. For AAA games the reason they don't leave their comfort zone is because there's a guaranteed level of success if they follow the formula.

Other than learning the mobile ecosystem a decade ago to barely support handhelds and push live services/trend following so much I don't know the last risk they took because they are so formulaic these past few years.
You get some ok ideas to spin on the trends with those technologies you benefit from in AAA range but not enough.

i think the biggest issue with AAA games is that theyve been around too long, you know what i mean? back when gaming was relatively new and indie games were incredibly rare, all the AAA companies had to innovate and come up with new ideas to try and stand out. as indie games became more common, AAA games tended to turn into super generic games, practically rereleases of the previous game, just with new maps or a new ui, and it was up to the indies to innovate, give ideas for the AAA to take if they see it as interesting or good. people will buy the most abusive microtransactions, and all most of the big companies want is money. indie devs tend to want to make an experience either catered to a specific niche, or just generally good, while AAA companies just go for the safest stuff, whatever sells

I used to play mostly indie games back when I only had a laptop with dual core CPU and Intel HD GPU for gaming. I had my best memories in gaming back then, playing stuff like Sundered, Death's Gambit, Guacamelee or Stanley Parable.
Then I got a high end gaming PC and decided to play a lot of AAA titles to make the most of my rig capability. I ended up mostly playing Fallout 4 with mods, and it was more finding and trying cool mods with it than playing the game itself. I only finished like 4 AAA titles as I'm speaking, mostly the newest titles.
Then my PSU went bad so I had to replace it but I was really broke and needed to save for two months before I could get a new one. I played indie games on my laptop again in the meantime and...boy, did I had fun playing games again! I spent like 6 to 7 hours on a sunday just playing Dead Cells and yet, I couldn't keep myself playing stuff like Horizon Zero Dawn, Elden Ring, Spiderman Remastered or Assassin's Creed Valhalla for three hours straight. There's just something about indie games that you can't get on many AAA games nowadays.

I'm definitely being hyperbolic about "all AAA games being bad". Those are 10 very solid AAA games that were nearly perfect at launch and delivered on the promises they made to consumers.
What's sad is that those appear to be the exception rather than the rule. This could of course be distorted by the fact that outrage is more newsworthy than satisfaction. Over the last few months, we've had a slew of bad game launches (LOU Part 1 on pc, Jedi Survivor, Redfall, Forspoken, etc.) that seem to take up a majority of the discussion about AAA games.
I don't know if it proves a point but being able to look at that list you made of list of solid, fairly recent games definitely helps me to step back from the doom (ha) and gloom of things and remember it isn't all bad.
Also, I'm humbled you watched my video. Along with NakeyJakey, you're one of the two channels that inspired me to make videos. Cheers, and I look forward to your next one!

I feel like there is something to be said here, there is another theme to bad AAA games... and it's not the numbers. It's more so the live services that take a toll on them. For example, let's take two Nintendo games, Kirby's Return to Dreamland and the Sinnoh remakes. Those two are simular in that they are remakes/remasters of previous games, but one is significantly better, Kirby. Kirby has plenty of new content like Magalor Epilogue and new copy abilities, while the Sinnoh remakes has... more bugs that aren't Pokémon. The difference is that one is meant to be played online while the other, while it has online features, can be played by yourself just fine. I'm just saying, maybe single player games can work more money than live services/ open worlds (Lookin' at you Forespoken, take some lessons from a literal *BEAT*down)

I think part of the problem with AAA game companies is also 1) They've stubbornly stuck to the same price point for far too long, and tried to stuff other horrendous monitization into games that undermine gameplay to make up for it as inflation eats away at the dollar. 2) They spend WAY too much money on games, trying to give everything super complicated graphics, movie quality sound, etc., when great graphics/etc. aren't needed for a great game, just great gameplay.

I think Starfield vs No Man's Sky is a perfect example of this dichotomy. Rovers, more handcrafted content, seamless transition between space & planetside...I'd be willing to bet these are all things that many people on Bathesda's creative teams really wanted to do, but somebody higher up the ladder did a cost-benefit analysis and decided those things weren't worth the money (for now).
Also, compare how each developer responded to their game not being well received initially. Hello Games didn't blame the "haters" and dig in their heels trying to retain their most loyal fanbase, they acknowledged the criticisms and bent over backwards to try to fix them...and today, NMS has become one of the most respected space games out there. Starfield on the other hand...I feel like even if Bathesda is serious about wanting to ride this horse for another several years, it'll be too late because most people will have moved on.

    The main problem with AAA games is complicated but the big parts the people can point to the most is a few topics;
1)The Fix it later mentality. Just Because you CAN fix it later does not mean you Should
2)The MVP Goals. This kinda goes with Fix it Later. MVP standing for Minimal Viable Product. Games Release Incomplete. With most of their content about a year out. Gamers start to question why bother purchasing the game now when the complete version is a year from now.
3)Lack of Variety and Creativity. Companies forget that RISK is needed to grow a market. If you are unwilling to take RISKS in your entertainment then your not going to grow.

Or when the challenges, provided by the game world, and events, that happens regardless of player's participation, makes it alive, like in "Rain World". And that's why I love when Indie developers try to expand the boundaries of games mechanics and expectations and make something extraordinary that will make an unique experience that can be something more than just having fun or being immersed. That moment is when the game, as form of media and storytelling, meets art. (IMHO)

Not every AAA game can be considered a "bad" one. Yes, AAA companies do frequently focus on the business end of things, but AAA titles like Red Dead 2, Spider-Man, and Eldanring are all fantastic examples of great games. and it seems to me that you failed to acknowledge them. Despite concentrating on three aspects, you made your video to make fun of AAA games. "The Last of Us 2" was mentioned by you. While other games have sequels as a short cash grab, The Last of Us 2 was an incredible and fantastic way to wrap off the plot. That game wasn't meant to be a short cash grab; rather, it was meant to be a sequel that would expand on the world and story of the characters. I enjoy inde games; don't get me wrong; I've played Cuphead four times or so. My point is that AAA games aren't always terrible.

While Bethesda has made several games since Skyrim (Starfield just came out), it just feels so gross for them to continuously repackage the same game and sell it for full price again and again. And rockstar...yeah. They barely make games anymore because their cash cow is doing well enough on its own that they don't feel a need to.

There’s a few games that come out that are a genuine EXPERIENCE and have the level of impact of a life changing movie. Things like the long dark do this through environment and immersion. Other games like tell me why do it by capturing a very specific feeling like nostalgia. Another still is our life beginnings and always. There’s also Gris and Omori. Every single one of these game is an indie title and has genuinely changed me for the better. Some games are fun just like some movies or books are fun but some can be truly life changing. No triple A game has ever made me feel anything close to what these game have done.

You're biased about this topic since you didn't add this info to your video: Hades 2 was announced, Hollow Knight 2 also announced, the other one that's in 50's cartoon style also getting a sequel and possibly a tv show. Indie devs are as greedy as big companies, they just don't have the trust and support of consumers to invest/get a budget to develop full blown triple A games.
Most of indie games don't have microtransactions because they lack the server infrastructure needed to implement the service; but if they had it they would also use it: who wouldn't buy more character models on any of the indie games mentioned before? The art is so cool people would def buy in game items if they could.
I've been gaming since I'm 5 years old back in the 90s, and I still haven't found a single indie game that I like, not a single one I can play as if it was the only game that exists. I'd rather just play old games.
Valhalla has the main story campaign which plays as an unlockable tv show, but it also has several game modes included for free within the game, including a fully fleshed roguelite mode with permadeath and rng hidden behind an npc quest that you have to find the npc and all, like it's not given; I put like 40 hours only on the roguelite mode. I honestly don't get why people hate one of the most successful games ever made that also has so much content and game modes that like why buy any other game ever?
Elden Ring is especially bad considering it's the 6th iteration of demons' souls, to not count king's field games; same 10 year old gameplay, same 10 year old graphics, no new systems or meaningful mechanics, no game modes, same disgusting multiplayer infrastructure with the horrendous lag and phantom range. Dark souls is a bad/poorly developed ninja gaiden clone; fromsoft made an actual ninja gaiden clone at the same time they were working on demons' souls, that obviously failed because ninja gaiden was better. Elden Ring is a bad/poorly develoed Assassins' Creed that lacks all the customization ubisoft gives in their games. The difference between indie games and triple A games is that indie games play how they play, and triple A games allow you to play your way. Elden Ring lacking so many Ui options is not positive when compared to Valhalla that allows you to play completely blind in terms of Ui if you want to, it's not mandatory; Valhalla is the dark souls 2 fromsoft wanted to make. In Elden Ring there are towers where you go and pick up the map of the area and you can even see the tower in the map marked regardless of the fog of war: it's the same as any AC, fromsoft didn't bother coding a platforming system to climb the tower, they just made it a monolith, threw the item in the ground and told you where you could pick it up. How is that better than any AC? I don't get it. Elden Ring was awfully broken on release and it took them several patches to fix the crashing, the visual artifacts... are you living under a rock? The game still crashes often, like any other triple A game. Elden Ring doesn't have microtransactions, but how does that fix the gameplay being the 6th iteration of the same game? Fromsoft didn't even write the game, they sourced the writing to the GOT writer; they sourced sekiro's stealth system to activision. I don't understand the fromsoft praise. The new Armored Core incoming on august is the 7th iteration of demons' souls now with mecchas, even the writing is the same "the fire fades, light the embers", estus flasks, dodges, in a meccha game. I do not understand the fromsoft praise. I heard someone give a review the other day "they release banger after banger" of course, they are the call of duty of action rpgs; it's the same game with different assets, the same story with different wording, the same animations reussed, the same character designs with a bit of variation, cmon be for real people. Stop using elden ring and fromsoft as an example of greatness, it's exactly the opposite; they are destroying all other genres; god of war turned into arpg, ac turned into arpg, nioh should have been ninja gaiden successor but no, another arpg, wolong at least had the balls to remove the stamina bar and add a ton of new mechanics that don't exist in any other game, including improvements to multiplayer infrastructure on arpgs such as the capacity to revive teammates and teammates being able to revive the host.
You're crazy if you think triple A games are failing :D Valhalla sold $1 billion and has over 20 million players; COD is so massive that countries are fighting each other to have control over the IP because of how it will affect their economy; if sony loses COD japan feels the blow hahahahah triple A games failing hahahaha you're living in a bubble; ubisoft has like 6 AC games already in development; EA keeps putting out sport games like it's nothing and people don't care that the assets they bought through microtransactions don't cross over to the new games hahahahahahaha they don't care and consumers don't care haha they just keep buying the new iterations of the same games and they keep buying the same assets through microtransanctions to have them in the new game hahahaha insanity; capcom keeps pushing out the same street fighter game for the past 20 years the same game with extra handicaps to make it more casual and people keep buying it, they sell the same dlc characters on every new game because the assets don't cross over to the new games, tekken 8 is the same thing hahahahahahahahahahahhahaa consumers get scammed and they do not care, they do not care one bit; nintendo keeps pushing out the same mario game, the same zelda game hahahahahaaha indie devs are aiming to compete with triple a games, looking for their mario iteration, their zelda iteration, their ac iteration or dark souls iteration... it's rare that an indie game design is adopted by a triple A studio, but sure, indie games define the game industry hahahahahha
I'm not hating, I'm just in awe because of your perception of reality :D like how did you come up with your that perception? :D

AAA used to experiment now its formulas. Indies use what their favourite games were and expand on them like Metroidvanias or Stardew from Harvest Moon or arcade racing hits of the past or Zelda or whatever else. But customers need to think what do they actually want their favourite IPs to have interesting directions/continued directions of certain features, themes and more or do we want all games to have their own direction, some safe, some not.
So are western AAs or Japanese companies that are pushing ideas then well yes western AAA being comfortable or trend focused. Japanese games get ignored but I mean why do people even big heads in the west say Japan innovates yet barely anyone cares. Any Indies do innovate don't get me wrong.
Does anyone care about Coded Arms Konami's PSP roguelike. Nope. Why would most fans they have the big IPs they cared about. Regardless of being on handheld they still got their favourite IP on the handheld. So when Coded Arms Assault for PS3 came around I assume Konami gave up on it as they went oh these other shooters will overtake it why bother if most aren't going to care about it anyway or the expense compared to the PSP entries is too high.
People claim they want creativity but even in sixth gen with experiementation or even fifth gen you have certain ones people claim are the worst on a console but haven't even played them, believe a UA-camr that played the first few levels and that's that then well a person that did play through it. Says what sucks and is good about it then hating on it as 100% of their messaging anyway.
So if most people don't care about the ones that got ignored that's why we have what we have today is the safe games or safe direction for their favourite games to keep players happy or follow a trend to play it safe instead to stay alive.
Some do when they do look back at competitors back in the day for certain genres but most think of the ones they experienced and that's it. They may or may not pick out certain details, have nostalgia or whatever but I mean if I wanted a Battlefield 2 Modern Combat swap feature, Sega GT or others car builder do I think many people would care no not really. Marketing/Sales say otherwise.
While the success of ZombiU (besides Wii U then ported to PS4/Xbox One or Red Steel 1&2 for Wii and they won't port it to VR) should not have determined Rayman Legends they are completely different audiences but companies want their profits for all games even if it makes no sense. Sigh. XD But customers want their favourite IPs to continue a certain way and companies work around that. Did people play Starlink Battle For Atlas even.
I could mention other NEW IPs Ubisoft made hmmm. Just because customers seem to forget or ignored them. I mean yes it's toys to life and yes and open world but I mean still. It's a new IP isn't it. No assassin's Creed or Tom Clancy. And we have Prince of Persia returning are people going to support that old IP maybe yes maybe not. Skull and Bones too?
Did you buy Valiant Hearts or Child of Light, no so why would Ubisoft bother. Did you any other Indie like attempts at big AAA publishers the EA Originals, The Song of the Deep, Pentiment, Puppeteer or other Sony Japan Studio games the niches in Sony games that no one plays but a niche audience in the west, among others Nintendo does as well that aren't Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, if people were playing Mario Kart where were they for F Zero huh, you get the point.
Many offerings people didn't play or buy so why complain. Japan Studio wasn't going to make JRPGs and be straightforward stereotypical, they made art and game mechanic different games, the creativity many are looking for then just another action adventure game or shooter (that and well Sony's variety wasn't doing it for them clearly, I liked the Western Sony studio variety and their Japanese games but nope they had to change direction to survive, it annoys me but I mean it makes sense why).
People focus on the big US/EU Sony studios IPs so why else wouldn't they kill off that umbrella of studios and leave Polyphony and Asobi with Asobi and Media Molecule and Pixel Opus being the last of their creative not cinematic teams.
Having no interest is understandable but if they do try with your favourite IP to have a spin-off to try and get other customers interested, focus on other characters, other gameplay is that a bad thing no.
Companies try but people focused on the big so why complain when they did offer them people just didn't care. It's why gamers are hilarious as well as companies.
Think harder not use only big examples to make generalised complaints if you didn't even play their lesser known games in the first place.when they were being creative.
So if you went, what's a Vib Ribbon when Shaun Layden said so (besides it being a EU/JP and not in the US until digital later in the US so oops on their part there) then that's your answer. Besides the availability thing. XD
The problem is new IPs are hard to market and succeed is the issue. Sequels keep the company afloat then a new IP when they can make it/have an idea. Extraction is a great example they had an idea weren't sure how to handle it put it into an existing IP it wasn't what fans wanted. Now 1 because it's aliens and not grounded in reality like a Tom Clancy game of those types can be and 2 they put an idea on a big IP because a new name wouldn't sell well it's too risky. I want there to be new IPs when doing new ideas but they can't always do that.
COD I mean the subtitles say themselves. Sci-fi people hated it, Ghosts hated it, they did WW2, modern and Black Ops I get why if they are stuck in a corner. The mechanics are what they are in each of those games. Why multiplayer. Why singleplayer.
We can blame casuals it doesn't change anything if they make the call not gamers were the minority audience unless in the UA-camr/Streamer as a voice space either that do give feedback and do get heard their the exception besides QA testers and executives or directors and so on leaders of their respective teams. Big yes but still not compared to the average person scale. That's what gamers forget and get too into the hobby to take a step back as to why we have an industry the way it is.
Thing is they pushed for more profits in the PS3/360 era and got themselves in this mess. So they keep pushing. Executives sure but otherwise they make sequels to that era of games and so they expand or re-using aspects from those eras so to me they feel like seventh gen again and again.
The sequel point is a bit misleading. Division is a 2 but on top of being in the big Tom Clancy universe so in a way Division is a new direction but still part of the universe besides the Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell and others with their own direction I get what you mean but eh
Last of Us I mean 2 games in a decade because it takes that long and I mean I don't like cinematic games but I mean a weird point to make when it's the direction of most Sony games, some exceptions but mostly cinematic linear like Last of Us and God of War's structure change, and the open worlds of Days Gone, Horizon and Ghost of Tsushima (sure Sucker Punch have made open worlds since Sly 2) Bend never made one so it took them Uncharted Golden Abyss to 2019 to make Days Gone. Besides Guerrilla with Killzone to Horizon. They learned/attempted structures they hadn't besides Sucker Punch 3 gens doing that. They had to catch up.
Which seeing Bayonetta 3 catch up to Devil May Cry 5 with an awkward mechanic annoyed me so I sometimes hate when that happens.
The others I mean COD has tried changing over the years with different things with little details. Whether setting, dogs or other little details I can't name all of, sci-fi exo-suits/wall running and jumping that Titanfall 2 did well with good level design in 2 specific levels and moved on to the next. I don't care for the series but I still won't deny you notice them by people that do play them and make good points that they do differ per game just a bit in some areas.
FIFA/Madden I mean yeah it's in systems to make money then better systems.
People complain about the open world racing games having comfort with Forza Horizon 4&5 as the others try but don't land as much in execution.
Hades 2 getting mentioned at all? Some Indies move on as that's all the ideas they have. Shovel Knight has many entries now. Also you cover AAA or triple i Indies too. Nothing against AAA Indies they are great but I mean they are what's heard about the most. Their ideas are good but still. They are the ones making an impact for sure.
Seeing PSP puzzle games all games from Japanese and western studios were completely different and it's amazing they had really cool ideas there. But then again times were different.
That and gamers either are open to or sick and tired of being beta testers, maybe not Indies. AAA have teams they outsourced for that.
Indies need gamers to get interested and they put a spin on things and stand out because that's what products should do stand out with interesting ideas. Besides that we seek them out and casuals won't so they have to appeal somehow to a certain audience than everyone as it's too broad and they are big enough.
AAA veteran Indies make games that are like the IPs they used to work on or something different. Judas/Atomic Heart, Yooka Laylee, Mighty No9, Bloodstained, and many more.
AAA tries with technologies but they also just follow a trend for so long that you either like it or get bored with it so quickly you want it over with, some spins on existing mechanics, cinematic whatever appeal only does so much or the competition get too comfortable too and move on to other genres, other Devs or well the Indies/AAs.

A+++! ☀️ I'm not sure that many have explained it better!
The -AAA- FFF fat cats have gotten so comfortable with doing the same thing repeatedly, that when they fail, they don't give a fuck, so long as they cash the check! They are convinced that they can afford to fail, and leave that failure--even an abject failure--spinning in the wind and move on.
When a AA or indie company fails, they will, at the very least, read the feedback and figure out--or take advice on--what needs fixing.
It is not just the sequels that are the problem; we've got sequels where the creativity of their predecessors has been maintained, with almost no revamp, even if the graphics are slightly more advanced. It's like the original Enterprise with a fresh coat of paint, even with a different (gray) shade...
...Now, going from _DOOM 3_ to _DOOM (2016)_ was like the complete renovation of the original Enterprise, inside and out, to the 1979 ship. Advanced graphics engine, new demon designs and new storyline. A sequel, but _maybe_ not a sequel. A reboot, perhaps? But the creativity within the story was more convincing. 😎

Eastasia Soft makes good new shooter games. Hyper5 was $9.99 NEW. It has new Unity and looks great for a new arcade shooter. I like how indi games are more polished. I bought 10 shooter games from $2-$12 each for about $40 all. I like a variety. I don't have time to download 100Gb games anymore, and don't want to waste hundreds of hours on one game like Fallout 4 which took me 9 months to platinum. I like arcade games like Cuphead because they load fast and I can play one level for 20 minutes and turn it off. I don't want to spend a hour on a mission like Red Dead Redemption 2 and then respawned on the other side of the map. I also hate pixel art in indi games. Pixel art is for CRT TVs. Games should be made for modern TVs and never released in 480p or 720p with letterbox art. I like how I can buy a indi game on release and get the whole game with no updates or DLC. Technically they finish making a triple A game after they stop making DLC, and the day one edition is a beta copy of the games.

I think there is a lot to say about games that are simple in design or those that mimic the arcade/retro style. They remember first and foremost that they're just games meant to make people smile and enjoy themselves. I love that simple hop in, play a few minutes, hop out style of game because it actually helps me play more.
Thanks for pointing these games out to me!

AA games are also a bit in the middle between AAA, and indie. They are small/medium sized studios, but they often include game dev vets, and experienced devs that craft fun, quality games. Not greedy or political like AAA, but not entirely brand new like Indies. There are examples like, THQ Nordic, and Focus Entertainment. There is a subtle, or vast difference between AAA, AA, and Indie. But, I feel it's more something you need to play to better understand.

6th generation of games were so fun and before that as well. Ps2 era had so many random $20 games of every genre and some were hits some were miss... that was the last gen of AA games.
When we hit the 360 era all those midbudget games dried up and thats when i lost interest in console wars. Now indie filled that role of A and AA games, the studios feel like you need to go all in on hundred million dollar games with monetization to make real money.
With any luck AAA will crash and stabilize and come out better... we are at the point where games run like shit on console and are requiring insane specs on pc.

Indie games arent even trying to compete with AAA gaming. The AAA industry is just in that bad of a state. Like holy shit the turns tabled hard. Whereas when AAA gaming was good, you rarely heard of a successful indie game, or they were all rpgmaker games. Indies have branched out far enout to were AAA gaming SHOULD be taking hints. Indie games are just better. Just recently a jaw dropping Indie dropped on steam, Shadows of Doubt. A voxel based detective game that is procedurally generated, wholly open world, with dynamic crimes happening throughout the city, and its only in Early Access. Like, fuck. A triple A studio COULD do that. But they actively choose to produce filth instead. and Most of Shadows of Doubt was made by one person. Most of the best games are indies, and alot of them were made by a single person team. If ONE PERSON can make a better game than a fully staffed, big budget AAA studio, there's a problem.
