- We have been following Mads from Sail Life for years and have enjoyed occasional chats over the computer. This past weekend, for the first time, we were able to meet him in person, and were honoured to have him stay aboard Paragon. Before he left, Mads was gracious enough to sit down with Drake and have a relaxed conversation about his love of sailing and how it all got started. We hope you enjoy!

mads has to be the only sailing channel that I am absaoutly hooked on. that doesn't sail 😁 just because he covers every little detail.
agree 100%
really enjoyed this one. mads is such a talented craftsman. Big thumbs up
YES! Another 4 years of DIY with Mads!
Great interview and that sure brought back some great memories of cruising with Mads!!
Guess when Mads finishes sanding he'll head for Vancouver Cove.........

Finally! Time that someone interviewed Mads. Thank you Drake! I believe it will come.... some day Mads and his project will show up on national television here in Denmark! A MUST!! 😀🇩🇰
Great interview with great people, and I saw Alfy and Kamau, more great people. I started sailing at 42 and it changed my life... for good. Cheers guys!!!!
Awesome interview Drake ! Great job Mads !! my two favorite youtube channels meet !! YEH !!!
Moe Jaime i
Amazing folks. I am in the proces of buying my first boat and your two channels are such a huge inspiration in this leap. So thank you for being awesome - both of you. I can really recommend doing some serious binge watching of Sail Life and Drake Paragon to all of you that hasn't done that yet :-)
Great interview!, I have watch Paragon channel for many years and Mad's for many years too, you both have a great following and I will continue to watch you for a long time!
Love it that a couple of my favorite channels come together for a wonderful conversation.
Great interview Drake!! I hope you run into more people and do more!! Mads is awesome and we love his videos!!
Both of you have a great youtube channel - i enjoy following your adventures while dreaming and planning my own adventure!
Thanx for this video guys!!!
Thanks for putting this interview together for us, Drake & Mo. I'm glad you all have made a connection, and look forward to seeing you and Mads sail together in the future!
Great video guys, was interesting to see how the Q&A brought out a different side to what we normally see. Really enjoy both the channels as they are both inspiring.
Once again a great interview Drake. As others have said two of my fave channels collide. Been watching both for a few years and eagerly anticipate their uploads. Thank you Drake and Mo.
Thanks both of you for all your adventurs
good stuff and I love these interviews
I slipped a disc in my back once moving a stove and man is that a whole new kind of pain. It's indescribable.
Fantastic video!!!!
Two cool guys we are lucky to listen in on. Thanks for sharing.
What a great interview. You guy's are so humbled. Good job Monique
Great guys, great show.
Sail Life, Sailing La Vagabonde, and your channel are my favorites to watch, by FAR. I am subscribed/had been subscribed to many.
Two great chanels thank you
This is terrific two of most most favorite videographers together.....Great
So excited to have stumbled upon this!
Have been waiting for this interview. Had hoped for a question about Wilma ;-)
Two nice channels, thank tou so much.
Greetings from Norway
LOL I love sailing life. This is funny to see more than 3 years latter into his extensive (now) rebuild .
Excellent interview! Mads has the BEST diy channel on YT. Information is always well researched and presented. I particularly enjoy the outtakes. Nothing better than to watch someone that knows what they are doing screw up. It adds the human quality that others who don't include these mistakes are missing. I always learn more from a mistake ;)
Enjoyed this interview.
Nice visit guys. Thx
Excellent interview. Mads has one of the best DIY channels (in my humble opinion) and I'm always looking forward to his uploads.
Enjoyed the conversation & nice you all could visit😎
Drake, many thanks for allowing us to listen into a great interview with Mads, I have watched you and many more (Mads) boaters, and I love being a armchair sailor.
Cool.
This is why I love UA-cam and sailing! Ya'll are awesome!
Mads is such a great guy. He really is *the* authority on sailboat DIY on youtube. (Hats off to Boatworks Today as well, but he makes very few vids, and they aren't very detailed). He just seems a very genuine, decent sort. Really love his videos. Inspiring. Love these collaborations across different sailing channels.
You are legends!
His fiberglassing skills are the best How he made a new rudder was extremely impressive. Everything he does, is just Spiffy!
Drake, having recently watched the video where you interview the couple with the Dickerson 41 in Oriental, NC and now this video with Mads I must say you are very adept at getting people to reveal themselves on camera. Thanks for another great interview. Ken in Orlando
Cool to watch this even in 2020. Cheers! 😁👍
If I could ask for any video at all, it would have been a Drake style interview of Mads!!! Thanks for adding this one to the great collection of sailing interviews you have already.
It is going to be a really nice boat when its done! Nice work.
Love Mads! Great person. Great channel.
i enjoyed this well done guys Mads is a good guy .
Thanks and you're so right cycling kiwi, Mads is a very good guy. We were so happy to finally get to meet him in person. ⚓-Monique
That was great, my to favorite channels
Hi Guys! Great interview, a lot of fun to listen to! (Drake, could you speak up a bit more during your next interview, it was very hard to hear your questions sometimes). I was really looking forward to this vid today since Mads mentioned it in his video on Sunday! I wasn't disappointed! Thanks for the fun, informative video! Now, for the video when you guys meet again at some random anchorage!!!!! Ahhhh!!!!!!! Sail on!!!!! : )
Drake you are an awesome interviewer!! Mads is so spontaneous and sincere!! Algun día anclaremos juntos!!!
Gracias Nelson, we're glad you enjoyed the interview...and we would be delighted to share an anchorage with you one day. Fair winds to you! ⚓-Monique
Great interview Drake! Mads is an amazing guy, and i hope some day to meet both of you, but you're gonna have to come to a warmer climate!!! I've had more than enough of cold weather, LOL. Take care
what more can i ask? 2 of my favorite channels talking :)
pm a big fan of Mass. Thank you for making g this video.
My two favourite You Tube channels collide! It was interesting to see Mads upload a video, featuring you (Drake and Monique) , very much in his style and then see you upload this video featuring Mads, very much in your style. I feel like I know you all so much better. I look forward to both of you uploading videos for different reasons. I live in Australia so our sailing circumstances are worlds apart but perhaps, one day, our paths will cross. I can only dream.
Great conversation with mads. He is truly a unique guy. Hope to one day see him around a anchorage in Ireland or Iceland... one never knows. He is a bit OCD, but in a good way. Its cool to watch his thought processes unfold on a project. He seems to really put all in when he gets going. Some lucky girl will have a great catch one day, when he is free for that. I'm afraid that if he found a lucky someone Athena will lose out... and so will we.. so delay that date Mads...lol.
Great video Drake; I would like to see more of your refit also. I watched You working on the mast and spreaders years ago, then saw the conversations with Mark when they came out. Would like to know more about the heating system You guys are in love with.
Fair winds
Love the Salty Dog Cafe mug!!!!
Great interview! Unfortunitly, now I have to follow another youtube channel. But that's ok, I'm sure he will be excellent
I think those are probably the two nicest men in the world!
Mads is great... he lives on the coast opposite me, across Kattegat. His channel is really good, as is yours Drake. Love following both your channels.. Cheers to y'all ;-)

s/y Legend
Drake, you are a very accomplished interviewer!
Mads is the man!
This must have taken ages to edit. I really enjoyed the video inserts. We currently have some free wifi so we will be watching more than we have done for the past year. Sam says she also really enjoyed the previous video and hearing Mo - she has a great voice for recording. We must go back and watch episodes we have missed. Even though I know most of the narrative expressed here, it was fun to listen in again and make sure we haven't missed any bits. Also - is that a new hat Mads is wearing?
Come on Mads, Maxi 77 from DK? Wonder what Pelle Petterson would say:)
enjoyed the interview.
Wish I could get more time on my refit too but little by little, there's progress.
You've made an incredible amount of progress! It's great to see a boat like Rhapsody being brought back to her best. Looking forward to seeing that yellow mast in the same anchorage! :) - Drake
DrakeParagon thanks Drake.
just got my engine back on the boat, after a year and a half of sitting in the garage while building a fuel tank. still need to put it on mounts. still in the work list is getting the engine hooked up, new seacocks, various hoses, bottom work and bottom paint. lots of work ahead, but I'm getting excited to getting closer to finishing on day.
I hope there's a followup interview after a few years. Mads is so meticulous. Drake seems to be able to peel away the layers well, great interview.
Great interview. I liked the discussion about "internet experts". I was told that an expert is really just a drip under pressure. lol
Great interview! I was wondering how Mads gained all his boat repair technical skills. He seems to be able to do anything and one doesn't just learn that watching youtube...cheers.
two of my three favourite sailing channels collide... \o/
Sure missing you guys. Hope all is well with everyone!!
HI Dar, Thanks. After a Summer season that really didn't go as planned, we are now just now settling back down for the winter in Scotland. I can't believe it took me 4 weeks to find a safe weather window to sail from the Faroe Islands back to Scotland. We are now finally hunkered down for the winter and able to start working on Season 4. Please stay tuned!
In the meantime, here's a secret link to one of our Patreon real time updates. I hope you will enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/2tdHC1vGy1c/v-deo.html
Happy sailing and fair winds, Drake :)
ahah I like his thinking, bigger boat, a girlfriend would be more interested in it :D awesome to get another perspective into Mads life. great video Paragon!
I admit that's exactly what I was thinking too when I went from my 32 foot Westail to the 42. :)
- Drake
Is this the guy that went sailing once, got sick and had to go home? Is this the guy that bought a boat and when transferring the boat back to his home port, got sick again? Is this the guy that wants to be a full-time cruiser but never shows any sailing footage, only endless and never ending repairs? Is this that guy? Before I get a lot of trolls, I happen to follow and like Mads... cheers and thanks for the interview...
lovely interview! you two are my favorite channels! well i'm just about to set sail on my own, just two weeks to go. i wonder if ill meet you two and mads along the way out of the baltic and heading south for warmer waters. have you decided on a route yet? cheers mark
Hi Mark, We were thinking direct from Faroe to Svalbard then to Tromso, Norway and down the west coast to Bergen. Then either over to Scotland or to Denmark for the winter. What's your voyage plan for 2017-2018? - Drake
Hi Drake, thanx for the reply. The original Plan is to start from Germany's Baltic coast and head up to Bergen for a cross over to Scotland, take the Caledonian channel and head south between England and Ireland before the winter gets us. If we are running a bit late we might just shortcut to the north sea and go through the English channel instead. We could keep in contact and see where our boats end up ;)
It must have been a sad day when you had to say good bye to Emna....he looked like a great guy and good shipmate!
We're looking forward to Éanna (and Adam and his wife Kristi) sailing with us again someday. :)
Awesome Interview
A few Boats with headroom
Vancouver 32 has 6'5"
Sunbeam 38 6'6"
Seafarer 37 6''5"
Mirage 33 6'5"
Watkins 33 6'5"
Endeavor 37 6'5"
Baba 40 has 6'5"
Catalina 36 6'5"
most of the Najad have 6'5" to 6'7"
Maxi 77 - as far as I know is not danish build - but close - I would think it was Swedish 🤪
What happened to Greenland????
Has the guy Alffie whose building his own boat got a channel ?
Alfie isn't building his own boat. His channel is Life is Like Sailing. I don't know the name of the guy who is building his own boat. He has a UA-cam channel, too, but I don't remember the name of it
It's weird seeing Mads act like a normal person.
Maxi 77 = Swedish and is 7,7 meters long.
I guess Mads means a Swedish boat and not Danish. 24 foot.
Two months after this interview....... yep Mads has a girlfriend..........
I bet she liked the sweater he got for her in Faroe. :)
Psychotherapist FULL ON! 😲
He missed his calling!
Stop stop stop. Maxi is a Swedish boat. NOT danish. Shame on you Mads
Yep!
my opinion is that Mads is literally out of focus... Drake
I was sooo disappointed when I realized that he was slightly out of focus, but we didn't have time to redo the interview because Mads had to catch his flight in just a few hours. As soon as we finished filming we had to jump in the car to get him to the airport. We filmed this using some new camera gear that we had just purchased and are still learning how to use all of the features of. At the time I didn't realize that it had reset itself to a manual focus setting instead of the automatic focus. I hope you still enjoyed the interview! :)
