    I really love the combination of the wood and the white. The wood adds warm notes and the white lets the boat appear larger and more roomy. I dislike the all wood interior of mist boats but this is a real beauty! Awesome job and a huge inspiration! Cheers 👍🏻👌🏻

    Very good work! I also saw the anchor locker video which was well done, and admired your eye splices. If someone hasn't commented already, the berth under the cockpit is called a "quarter berth" in English. A pipe berth is generally a very spartan and retractable berth made of pipe and a width of cloth, amidships, above the settees.

    Magnificent restoration Mads. Clearly Athena is going to be the best Warrior 38 to ever touch water when you have finished with her. Love your electronics fit. As you asked - it's called a quarter berth, not pilot berth. Pilot berth on British boats is usually used for a berth that is raised and outboard of the saloon settee berth. Don't know why, seems much more sensible to call the berth next to the chart table the pilot berth as you do. There's nowt so strange as the English and their language. ;-) Following your work on Athena with great interest.

    Congratulations. I to am a Sailboat Restoration guy, a 32' Sidelman.
    I had a previous boat that I did what you did, but I am not that good of a carpenter as you. I found a nicer boat and had to rebuild the bulkheads, re-do the electrical and such.
    One told me, 'Get her on the Water' and don't fuss until it is perfect until you do. It will never be perfect.
    Have great Sailing Adventures !

      Yes I think we have very similar climates. :) I have had the boat 3 years so moving aboard 9 months ago was an easy transition. With a wet winter climate I definitely wanted to keep the condensation out so I starteed with making sure there were no leaks anywhere which created a few little projects, but not a drop comes in now. :) I run a little de-humidifier when it is raing or colder out and that takes care of condensation on the inside of the hatches and other spots that would habe that issue. I alsp keep the boat pretty warm which also helps. I have a little humitiy monitor in thr main cabin area so I take a look at the level now and then to keep an eye on the levels.

    I think your boat looks amazing! Good example of excelent restoration work. I did notice one small detail, and I'm not quite sure of if it can be a problem... The magnetic suport to the flash light seems too close to your compass... I do not know if that can alter your readings... besides that, good winds...!!!

  • @Moravian44444
    @Moravian44444 10 років тому +1

    Thank you for all of your videos about Obelix.........they are all really interesting and the quality of your spoken English is remarkably good. I have sailed a Vega in the past but have been considering a Ballad for a while now on the basis of its size, performance and, possibly, its motion in a seaway, even though I have never actually sailed in one! The Ballad is 1.5 times the weight of a Vega, but approx the same waterline, and I wonder what impact that has on her ability in making way through choppy waters or in a swell. Do you think she rides steadily, cutting through the waves or does she have a lively motion? How does she perform in light airs, when the wind is Force 2 to 3?
    I like what you have done in the refurbishment and the way you have created a light and modern interior. One thing I'm not clear about is whether the heads are located in the fore cabin, or whether there are doors to make it in to a sealed compartment? (This is an important issue for the ladies!)
    Happy sailing!

      Daniel Berry Thank you so much :) By your comments it seems like you are making your way through most of my videos. I hope you find them enjoyable :) Whenever I use an external mic and recorder you'll be able to see it (a small mic clipped to my shirt). In this video (and all my early videos) I used exclusively the build in mic in the GoPro. That is a GoPro 3+ Black. Later on I added a second GoPro (3+ silver), a Sony Nex 5, a Zoom H1 and a Rode smartlav+. If you've got any questions don't be shy :)

      ***** Thanks Mads, I really appreciate that feedback, as I am starting to make lists of gear I need to buy, including equipment for vlogging. For now, I am going to start with my iPhone 5s, and since I have never shot video before, I have quite a learning curve ahead of me, especially with video editing. I have a mid-2007 iMac, but know that I will need to sell it, or more than likely give it away, as soon as I buy a boat. So, I am thinking that a 13" MacBook Air would be a nice compromise between readability, and ease of stowing. What screen size do you have?

    • @What_If_We_Tried

      ***** And Yes, I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. :)

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  9 років тому +1

      Daniel Berry I've been using either a 13" or 15" Macbook Pro. Both screen sizes are perfectly fine and as long as you stick with 720/1080p it's not going to require a lot of processing power either :) Actually my 13" Macbook is from 2009, and that does an excellent job. The 15" Macbook is the top of the line version from last year. Sure it's a little faster but both will get the job done :) I got my 15" through work if I hadn't I'd have stuck with my old 13" :)

    LOve the boat and it appears your attention to detail is much like mine. You have made upgrades that make a lot of sense. I am actually considering something similar. My 30 ft Gemini Catamaran is a little more than I need and not as seaworthy as I would like. I was thinking about something monohull and 30 ish feet for around the world sailing. Is the Albin Ballard a larger version of the Albin Vega or are we talking about completely different vessels.?

      ***** Really like the larger size and the performance aspect of the Ballad. Not many available on this side but I would be willing to look at one on your side of the pond. Headed that way on Sept 23rd. Might take a look around at the prospects. Not a super common boat but obviously high end and well made. That is one I need to single had around the world. your Speeds are quite remarkable for a 30ft boat. Very fast indeed.

    Beautiful interior! Does the bed you sleep on in the main cabin pull out a few cm or is it the width exactly what I saw in the video? Thank you.

    Hi there, thanks so much for the high quality content. so much to learn for me as a brand new owner and future DIY refiter. In that regard, what products did you use to get all the work surfaces in the galley clean and white? I'd like to lighten my cabin as well and I'd like to have it look somehow like yours ;-) all the best for athena. cheers

    I have been watching Sail lIfe for more than 2 years now and I am catching up with old videos. In these obelix videos you seem quite different, like a different person. Is this just a character you have built for the needs of the show, or you have become more easygoing, happier, more smiling?

    I have a question about I can't seem to find the answer too. Setting up a power supply i can find the basic's such as inverters and solar powers...and so on. What I cant find is how do I add more power points? Inverts seem to only have 2 plugs. Do I just use extension cables and 3 way gang plugs to add more?

    Your old videos are really quite good! I really miss your wife, but I don't know when or where you met Eva. I would have to watch every video to find out where and when it happened. How did you find an American?
