- Obelix is a 1973 Albin Ballad (30 ft sailboat).
Please excuse my english. I hardly ever get a chance to use it and as a result it's ..erhm... "not that great".

Very tidy and immaculate boat. You have worked hard to make it perfect. Well done.
Paul Young Thank you so much :)
Wow. watching these early vids really highlights how your confidence and filming / edditing skills have grown 👍
I was about to type something similar. Practice makes perfect! It must be cool to see and hear yourself over time in videos. A fine historical record. 😁
During 6 year camera technology improved too. Damn 6 year of history long time
Dito
exactly what a difference
I just found your site and am reviewing some of your prior videos. I'm very impressed with your quality of work and am glad to use your videos as a guide for my own renovation! Thank you!
Wow Mads. Just searched through to find this one again. I can't wait to see Athena looking like this. Production quality has improved so much.
You sir are living the life! Godspeed from the U.S.
What a beautiful job you did!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the black and white and gray quilt or blanket too. Excellent design. I can tell you worked very hard. I hope she's sailing well and you're having the time of your life!
Thanks for the tour. It was amazing to see all effort you put to restore this beautiful boat. Keep rocking!!
mauritx Thank you so much :)
An excellent and intersting series of videos with a delightful presenter - keep it coming
Tom
You did a beautiful job!! I own a Cape Dory 36 (1979) on the Great Lakes USA. It's very inspiring to how classy an older sailboat can become!
I took a trip back in time to this video and, WOW! what a change for the better. I really like what you've done to the boat.
Your work on the boat is fantastic. I dont have a boat but I can see the care and thought that you put in to it.
Thank you so much :) I did spend a lot of hours on the boat, but I had a great time doing it. I swore I would never do something like that again, but I'm starting to warm up to the thought of doing it just one more time ;)
I watched all of your videos and must say what a great job you have done . You are a proud skipper.
Your videos have come along way. It kinda cool to take a look back in time with these old videos.
I really love the combination of the wood and the white. The wood adds warm notes and the white lets the boat appear larger and more roomy. I dislike the all wood interior of mist boats but this is a real beauty! Awesome job and a huge inspiration! Cheers 👍🏻👌🏻
Your English is excellent. Your craftsmanship is also excellent. Obelix is beautiful. Thank you for giving us a tour.
+Vincent Miceli Thank you so much :)
Mads, you are a remarkable man! Where do I look to find the story of how you met Eva? You are perfect for each other's personalities!
Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. Fair winds and following seas.
Your attention to detail shows. Beautiful restoration.
Thank you, Jonathan :-)
I love that you have Crosby Stills, and Nash playing in the background!
Amazing! Love what you've done to the place!
Just found your channel. Really enjoy and admire what you've accomplished. You must have a love for restoring old sailboats! I'm looking forward to seeing your continuing progress on Athena.
Love what you've done with the boat! Love the minimalist design. Love all the white. I plan on doing exactly this with the boat I buy. This video was very useful. 10/10
What a fantastic job you have done - much respect to you.
Well done .....From Townsville Australia...
Nicely done. Your efforts have made for a lovely vessel.
beautiful boat indeed! You've done an excellent job!
i'v watched your vid's i saw the first one and the last on the rebuild Obelix she went from scruffy to a fantastic ship you really did a great job i'v been to Denmark in the early 80's it was one of the best country's i'v ever been to i was a sailor been 3/4 way around the world and back been in 3 hurricane's and to many smaller storms and some of the most beautiful oceans and sea's you will have a great time in your travels from one old sailor to a young sailor keep them sails tight and don't piss into the wind
Just gorgeous!! Well done!!! I miss my little Vega
Great job! Looks very clean and bright. Thank you for sharing!
Bryan C Thank you, Bryan :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Beautiful job on your boat - and videos! Peace.
I just found your channel last night...love it..I have seen so many old boats in need of repair and looked at some of the restorations..your is by far the best job...am not surprised...my brother-in-law is Danish and he has that same attention to detail that you have...keep the vids coming ..Murf in SD
SuperMurf44 Thank you so much! :) You are very kind! I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but what is SD short for? South Dakota? :)
***** sure is.. You know my Rushmore...the one with our presidents on it...
SuperMurf44 I've never been but of course I've seen Mount Rushmore in movies and pictures :) So far I've only visited the coastal areas of the US. I plan to rectify that in the future :)
Very good work! I also saw the anchor locker video which was well done, and admired your eye splices. If someone hasn't commented already, the berth under the cockpit is called a "quarter berth" in English. A pipe berth is generally a very spartan and retractable berth made of pipe and a width of cloth, amidships, above the settees.
What a difference a few years makes... I've just watched all of the Athena vids, and you are a completely different person in this video. Now, you are much more comfortable on camera...
I don't remember watching this video previously... Was down here to leave a comment, and I see I already did... lol
Congratulations. I to am a Sailboat Restoration guy, a 32' Sidelman.
I had a previous boat that I did what you did, but I am not that good of a carpenter as you. I found a nicer boat and had to rebuild the bulkheads, re-do the electrical and such.
One told me, 'Get her on the Water' and don't fuss until it is perfect until you do. It will never be perfect.
Have great Sailing Adventures !
Kelly
What a beautiful boat, well done
Your English is impeccable. I have subscribed and look forward to catching up with all your videos.
BodyGuardOfLies1 Thank you so much :) Welcome aboard! I hope you find the videos to your liking :)
wonderful boat! It really is something to see. I also like your idea to do the playlist...it helps me go through the channel in an orderly manner. Thanks!
Sailing Nervous Thank you so much :) I do think I'll be upgrading to a slightly bigger boat before casting of the lines for good. Something with standing headroom most likely in the 35-42 ft range. I plan for it to be my home for the next 30-40 years. I love your videos :) Your intro in super awesome! Eagerly awaiting the next episode :) Keep up the good work :)
Excellent job and your English is excellent too!
Your English is fine, your boat is fine too! Great job!
That is impressive work, your boat looks great!
Impressive determination and final product! I hope I can get mine to look at least 1/2 as good as yours.
Lovely boat. Thank you for the tour.
Congratulations on an amazing job on your boat. It looks amazing.
Thank you so much :)
@@SailLife and now Congratulations on Athena! Never missed an episode this past 5 years !
Impressive restoration.
Magnificent restoration Mads. Clearly Athena is going to be the best Warrior 38 to ever touch water when you have finished with her. Love your electronics fit. As you asked - it's called a quarter berth, not pilot berth. Pilot berth on British boats is usually used for a berth that is raised and outboard of the saloon settee berth. Don't know why, seems much more sensible to call the berth next to the chart table the pilot berth as you do. There's nowt so strange as the English and their language. ;-) Following your work on Athena with great interest.
I'm really enjoying the relaxed style in these older videos. I know you've moved on from this boat, but it looks great! -Chad
That is a stunning renovation my friend. I'm trying to sort out a little Pandora and if it turns out to be half as impressive as Obelix, I'll be really happy.
Very sweet lines and nice details. Great work..
You certainly have made a very good job of the overhaul of your boat! My compliments! Godt gået! Du taler godt engelsk!
Just gorgeous my friend
amazing work u have done its really beutifull
Lovely job on a lovely boat, congratulations. With respect to your English, I was thinking to myself that we North Americans should be ashamed that so few of us speak second languages when to do so is de rigeur in much of Europe. Your English sir, seems superb.
Your English is quite good for "not that great." :)
I love Obelix so much! Would love to sail her!
Hey man I grew up in America and you speak more articulated english then I do. Your doing fine.
Reverend Mike Thank you so much :)
nice work mate
We got a few sailboats in our backyard, been considering cleaning them up a little
great videos Will
You did an amazing job.
Thank you very much! :-)
Amazing job fella !
Richard Longmore Thank you so much :)
otroligt bra jobbat arbete på din båt. och din Engelska är perfekt !
... Hej från Sverige !
Great work...very impressive restoration. Subscribed
Thanks…! I have more of a project boat in the Sea Sprite 30. I shared your UA-cam channel on some Sailing and Cruising Facebook pages. I think you will see an increase in subscribers. Looking forward to new videos!
Its amazing how much has changed
Aged
Wow, you did a wonderful job. Now it's time for a little sailing video.
***** Thank you very much. I hope you enjoyed the videos from my summer trip :)
Beautiful boat and retrofit. I sail dinghies now and love it, nothing like being close to the water but I will move up to a keel boat someday in the future. Hopefully I can do as good a job as you have done.
Tom LaRocque Thank you, Tom :) I've never sailed a dinghy but it looks like a lot of fun. I'm sure you'll do an awesome job when you decide to refit a keelboat :) It's not hard, but it does take up a lot of time. I hope you'll post some videos when that time comes :)
Very impressed with the restoration you have done for your vessel! Love the clean and organized layout. The pilot berth you mentioned is called a Quarter Berth in Canada. Looking forward to seeing more videos of some sailing adventures you may take!
I live on my 1982 34 ft C&C in Vancouver, Canada and just love restoring and maintaining my vessel. I have several videos highlighting some of the racing, cruising and projects I have done. Check them out if you like!

Yes I think we have very similar climates. :) I have had the boat 3 years so moving aboard 9 months ago was an easy transition. With a wet winter climate I definitely wanted to keep the condensation out so I starteed with making sure there were no leaks anywhere which created a few little projects, but not a drop comes in now. :) I run a little de-humidifier when it is raing or colder out and that takes care of condensation on the inside of the hatches and other spots that would habe that issue. I alsp keep the boat pretty warm which also helps. I have a little humitiy monitor in thr main cabin area so I take a look at the level now and then to keep an eye on the levels.
Great Job from Ireland
mikecat23 Thank you so much :)
Wow you did a great job on that boat.and I know what is like to remove a mess as I also rebuilt an older boat.
Orlando Pereira Thank you so much :) What kind of boat did you rebuilt? :)
Douglas 32
Perfect English,, Very Nice Boat, Congrats
your english is better than my Danish ;)
Beautiful
Your English is great!
Carter King Thank you very much :)
Great restoration. I’m doing some renovations on our LM28 and want to use some Formica laminate but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Where did you purchase the laminate here in Denmark ?
I have a question about I can't seem to find the answer too. Setting up a power supply i can find the basic's such as inverters and solar powers...and so on. What I cant find is how do I add more power points? Inverts seem to only have 2 plugs. Do I just use extension cables and 3 way gang plugs to add more?
the magnetic torch might be placed too close to the outside navigation compass. Beautiful restoration that gives a light and roomier interior while keeping the warm wood trim. Did you paint over wood or panel it with some kind of formica panel?
Very nice boat
Great tour...I predict you're going to become a great pin UA-cam
aha!!! so this is where the "nifty" craze begins, lol.... nice!
I greatly appreciate and enjoy catching up on your videos of Obelix and Athena! This is a beautiful refit. On Obelix, what is the oil lamp in the saloon? It looks like a very modern type hurricane lamp but I couldn't find anything close to it.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Beautiful interior! Does the bed you sleep on in the main cabin pull out a few cm or is it the width exactly what I saw in the video? Thank you.
I think your boat looks amazing! Good example of excelent restoration work. I did notice one small detail, and I'm not quite sure of if it can be a problem... The magnetic suport to the flash light seems too close to your compass... I do not know if that can alter your readings... besides that, good winds...!!!
Very clean and I also favor the minimalist approach. What type of engine do you use?
Impressive joinery.
Steven Cofer Thank you very much! :)
Very nice clear interior with only wooden trim. What kind of paint was used ? Is it matte finish ?
What material did you use for the insulation? many thanks
Hi Mads, since you have made a LOT of later improvements it would be cool to see an updated "Obelix tour today" video. Time for a remake?
Hi there, thanks so much for the high quality content. so much to learn for me as a brand new owner and future DIY refiter. In that regard, what products did you use to get all the work surfaces in the galley clean and white? I'd like to lighten my cabin as well and I'd like to have it look somehow like yours ;-) all the best for athena. cheers
Great two videos.
Pierre Melcher Thank you so much :) I'm glad you enjoyed them. Fell free to check out some of my other videos :)
I'd argue with that, because your English is very good!
Boat is ok...just joking. it looks very nice, great job and thx for sharing.
Looks great! will you be adding solar and wind? I'm currently saving for my first sail boat and looking to do what you have done. Get something affordable and restoring/modernizing it. I hopefully will live aboard it. I have already so many ideas one of which is memory foam mattress toppers for the V birth/ my bed :-)
Using a Ballad 30 - silly question, but can you tell me where the starter battery is located? Thank you
Thank you for all of your videos about Obelix.........they are all really interesting and the quality of your spoken English is remarkably good. I have sailed a Vega in the past but have been considering a Ballad for a while now on the basis of its size, performance and, possibly, its motion in a seaway, even though I have never actually sailed in one! The Ballad is 1.5 times the weight of a Vega, but approx the same waterline, and I wonder what impact that has on her ability in making way through choppy waters or in a swell. Do you think she rides steadily, cutting through the waves or does she have a lively motion? How does she perform in light airs, when the wind is Force 2 to 3?
I like what you have done in the refurbishment and the way you have created a light and modern interior. One thing I'm not clear about is whether the heads are located in the fore cabin, or whether there are doors to make it in to a sealed compartment? (This is an important issue for the ladies!)
Happy sailing!
that's an awesome boat and it looks like excellent work done to restore Obelix, Your English is better than mine, and its the only language I speak ( except both phrases of Spanish I know... how to order another beer (politely) and how to find out where the bathroom is. Those two phrases will got me through most of Mexico when on vacation there. Great looking boat. By the way, did you have to replace sails too ?
Hej Mads, hvad har du malet med indvendig i kahytten - direkte på glasfiberen?
what size boat is this
nice... what was the cost to have this restoration project done?
are you still sailing her? nice review on the interior. have you any story on sailing her? Your english is very good -) jim
nice boat!
Thank you very much! :)
Hello Mads... do you have a headliner on pr is that painted fiberglass
Hi Mads, I am not familiar with the AIS system, Is it required on vessels now?
Hi, I can't seem to find the video where you decided to get another boat. I was wondering why you made that decision, and are you still living aboard you're original boat while fixing the other one.
You did such a great job on the first one. It would be hard for me to leave after all that work. I love your dog. So fluffy and pretty. How does s/he do with the sailing? Sorry I don't know names, I just subscribed about a week ago. Thank you for taking the time to make such informative videos.
