That is the most impressive diesel knock I have ever heard. You can count the cylinders as they bang out the unburnt fuel! And they say coal trains are a thing of the past!
From what I know, the reason diesels smoke so much in this sort of cold start is just because the fuel - especially in an older turbocharger - doesn't vaporise properly in the cylinders, and so burns incompletely, generating LOTS of soot and smoke. Since the prime mover isn't turning very fast, what vapor there is can collect in the exhaust, producing those spectacular, volcanic backfires. Once the fuel warms up and the engine starts turning faster, the smoke goes away.
Diesel doesn't vaporize. The faster the Engine turns, the higher the Pressure in the Cylinders, at least at very low RPM. This is because as the Piston comes up and Compresses the Air, the Air heats up and expands. So an Engine with a Compression Ratio of about 25:1 can achieve up from 80 to 200 bar on the Compression Stroke when running and just below 1000°C on the Compression Stroke. However, on a slow cranking cold Start it is very difficult to get the Temperature in the Combustion Chamber high enough for useful combustion.
i don t know how to explain what i mean in English, but in all diesel locomotives there are tubes where engeneers put hot water and It heats up the engine.

Those train engines are pretty old but SNCF pushed them aside quickly by not really maintaining them to shape and changing their engines to a crappy quality so called more modern eco friendly engine. It is likely that the older engine would have performed better at start...

Je ne sais pas combien de temps ça a pu durer, mais autant de fumée blanche après autant de temps, c'est que certains cylindres ne veulent juste rien savoir et n'ont plus de compression... On est sur un moteur complètement cuit là...

Déjà injecter du starpilote ( un peu plus d’un demi litre ...) , le démarrage se fait par de l’air ( lancement avec de l’air comprimé à environ 9b) . Le démarrage des 63000, 66000 et 69000 est légèrement différent ( ce n’est pas un lancement par air).

Non elle n’est pas rincée c’est sont fonctionnement « normal ». Les 67400 démarrent et tournent de la même manière et sont toujours utilisées à l’heure actuelle.

The black smoke just means that there was an accumulation of oil, both diesel and lube oil in the exhaust manifold. I would be more concerned about the white smoke which might be steam from a leaking head gasket. Diesels will do this if started cold in cold weather. Not unusual.
Yes,,,but the white smoke is vaporizated unburnt fuel(clag),,,,is very flammable,,,this is the reason that explodes on all the exhaust malifold and goes out of the stack.,,,the loco starts with only in one cylinder,,,and may exhaust flames until all the cylinders fire up.

When you see a diesel throwing black smoke, as when accelerating, it's not getting enough air. Probably needs to clean the air filter. When it's white, the engine rings are shot and it's burning the lubrication oil. This one is a candiate for a rebuild.
Yeah CC72000 Magic machines and sadly no more. Years ago I lived close to the depot in Nancy at a railway hostel. These beasties used to wake me up at five in the morning when they started them just like this. But it wasnt the noise, it was the stink seeping through the window seals that used to wake me up. 😅😅😅

Si, comme je l'ai maintes fois constaté dans mon métier de conducteur, le dépôt remplit le carter d’huile ras "la gueule" au déclenchement du pistolet.... ou encore le non respect du préchauffage du moteur, voire les deux.... on obtient ce lamentable résultat !!!!!

dnrphil bonjour. Le bouchon se situe en général à une quinzaine de cms au dessus du carter, il reste donc de l'air. ..mais cet excédent sera fatalement brûlé avec fumée à l'appui!

Je ne sais pas combien de temps ça a pu durer, mais autant de fumée blanche après autant de temps, c'est que certains cylindres ne veulent juste rien savoir et n'ont plus de compression...
On est sur un moteur complètement cuit là...

Déjà injecter du starpilote ( un peu plus d’un demi litre ...) , le démarrage se fait par de l’air ( lancement avec de l’air comprimé à environ 9b) .
Le démarrage des 63000, 66000 et 69000 est légèrement différent ( ce n’est pas un lancement par air).

@@Fabien2626 ces machines démarrent réellement au startpilot, environ 1 demi litre. Ce sont des bouteilles de startpilot que l’on « claque » dans un réservoir parallèle au circuit de gasoil. Non elle n’est pas rincée c’est sont fonctionnement « normal ».
Les 67400 démarrent et tournent de la même manière et sont toujours utilisées à l’heure actuelle.

I start a lot of big diesels here in the cold Rocky Mountain winters & that was just painful to watch, talk about over fueled! You'd do less damage with a bucket of either!

Only at the east of Paris. To the north, great west and great south of France, except on some small lines (with modern engines) , it’s electric powered. This sort of 40 y/o locomotive is going to the scap yard now.
The black smoke just means that there was an accumulation of oil, both diesel and lube oil in the
exhaust manifold. I would be more concerned about the white smoke which might be steam from
a leaking head gasket. Diesels will do this if started cold in cold weather. Not unusual.
Yes,,,but the white smoke is vaporizated unburnt fuel(clag),,,,is very flammable,,,this is the reason that explodes on all the exhaust malifold and goes out of the stack.,,,the loco starts with only in one cylinder,,,and may exhaust flames until all the cylinders fire up.
Very interresting! Can anybody explain, what is happening? The Smoke is very much BEFORE the first Piston Sounds! Is the Turbo running without Pistons, or what?
When you see a diesel throwing black smoke, as when accelerating, it's not getting enough air. Probably needs to clean the air filter.
When it's white, the engine rings are shot and it's burning the lubrication oil. This one is a candiate for a rebuild.

Yeah CC72000 Magic machines and sadly no more. Years ago I
lived close to the depot in Nancy at a railway hostel. These beasties used to wake me up at five in the morning when they started them just like this. But it wasnt the noise, it was the stink seeping through the window seals that used to wake me up. 😅😅😅
