Lexus & Toyota absolutely knocked it out of the park with this truck. Yes, we'll miss the V8. But with everything else, you can tell they did their homework with what their main customer base wanted. They listened when they knew people who buy off-roaders & trucks like this don't want to constantly mess with touch screens, touch sensitive buttons, electronic shifters and crap that'll take away from the focus of driving and everyday usability. And they went back to an old school, boxy, utilitarian design that's not only super popular now, but it'll still look good 10-20 years later. Mad props to the design team for Lexus & Toyota. I'm really looking forward to the Gen 6 4Runner and the return of the US-spec Land Cruiser! 🙌🏻
I may be biased as my mum owns one (a 2012), but i much prefer the previous generation. Besides, the "predator grille" design worked well for the previous generation. However, because of the spindle grille fuel economy dropped from 15 city, 20 highway, 17 combined to 15 city, 19 highway, 16 combined. Both with the exact same engine and transmission.
Mike, I am your size, actually a bit taller, but definitely older (!). If you had an $80K budget and wanted a daily driver that might do an occasional road trip of 6-8 hours of driving a day, what would you buy?
I think honestly i’d get a grand highlander or a Lexus LX. I have a ‘22 Lexus GX right now… and i just love driving my wife’s ‘21 highlander. So comfy, has all the stuff we need in the XLE trim, looks good, and it drives EASY and goes the mile since it’s a hybrid! For anyone looking for an off-road capable body on frame SUV with a solid tow capacity, the new GX550 is brilliant. For most buyers interested in Overtrail models, the lack of a 3rd row is a blessing. It saves having to take them out.
I must be the only one in the world who rests their hand flat on the center bottom of the steering wheel. Been doing it on my Toyotas for 30 years. No matter how beautiful, powerful or amazing a vehicle is this could be a significant dealbreaker for me.
@@Mark-de4hj try going Alaska, you’d be lucky if you make it to BC/Yukon border with all the extra fuel on 620kg payload. I guess u can tow a trailer carrying premium gas, its 8000Lbs towing capacity would come in handy.

Probably something to do with the clever glass hatch system unable to accommodate the wiper’s motor assembly above. The compromise is to place it on the bottom part where the motor can have more space. I’d say it’s the better tradeoff. Function over form.
Sorry, as much as I like Lexus, and owning one, that infotainment system is disappointing; it still hasn't got any update since it released, it doesn't memorize your map orientation and zoom level; and can't believe they still didn't put multi language fonts for your music
No doubt it is a fantastic true SUV, but the true use case unless one takes it off-road so much or even once in a month is not there! At almost $10000 more on fuel cost over 5 years at 17 mpg assuming 15K miles a year, which is the minimum reasonable period of ownership, the value prop is completely lost. I can compare this to my X5 PHEV that I get 42mpg hybrid, that’s a straight up $2K savings a year! If you stretch that to 10 years, that’s $20K more on fuel. Yeah take away a good chunk to keep the Bimmer maintenance, but you lose money with this GX. Where exactly this may shine is for people who keep this for 15 years or more honestly!
Unless of course one were to encounter massive power outage or other catastrophies lol. The upfront cost of and maintaining an X5 PHEV will most likely exceed this GX and an X5 would never be able to navigate more adverse climates and rugged terrains. Then there is the resale value. A used EV especially one from BMW will plummet out of warrantee. (I know Ive owned the brand, not the EV) So yes, you're right, if you look only at fuel economy, this would probably work best for those who will utilize its full capabilities.
Ultimately this is a vehicle for buyers who aren’t primarily driven by fuel savings. Reliability remains to be seen but if you trust Lexus to deliver a reliable vehicle like they have been known to do over and over again (especially on Japanese made models), the cost-conscious customer can likely recoup savings by not having to do much outside of routine maintenance over a what should be a long lifespan. I for one believe Lexus/Toyota would not stake their world-renown reputation for ends-of- the earth reliability on a frame, engine, or transmission they haven’t thoroughly and heartily tested (even if they aren’t publicizing their methods).
