    Lexus did a great job with this refresh of GX. The ground clearance was a little less than I expected (was expecting closer to 10” with 35” tires). If I hadn’t bought a GX 460 the OverTrail (not the +) would be my choice. As it stands I’ll keep my 23 GX for at least 10 years and lift it when the newness wears off so I can really take it off-road

    • @busslayer4790
      @busslayer4790 11 місяців тому +2

      The tires are 265/70/18s, so about 32.5". I don't think anyone has played with the new model yet to know how much taller of a tire will fit.

    • @JCintheBCC
      @JCintheBCC 11 місяців тому +4

      The tradeoff is that you have 8.9" of ground clearance on 32.5" tires, but you have a lot of articulation with the suspension. Some vehicles let you raise the ride height (Jeep GC Trailhawk) to 10"+ but you lose most of your articulation. In my experience off-road, I'm more often limited by traction than by absolute ground clearance, so I'd rather have the articulation. But everyone's use case is different.

      @@JCintheBCC Why not have both ground clearance and articulation?

    As a current GX460 owner, I really like the exterior styling. I would also prefer not having the 3rd row for extra cargo capacity. The interior is functional and non-offensive, but I wish they stuck with some analog gauges. Analog just feels more premium these days. Overall I think I'd wait for the Toyota version so see how the hybrid 4 cylinder setup does for some extra MPG since I don't tow. The seats do look like a win over the 460 for sure.

    • @ShadowBend
      @ShadowBend 11 місяців тому +4

      @yamafanboy5514 the seats take up space even when folded... Maybe 7 inches in height the whole width and length of the cargo area. They don't stow into a black hole 😂

    $80k is a lot, but 33s and KDSS puts it near Rubicon territory, and for what we paid for our Rubi, paying a bit more to get the on-road goodness might be worth giving up the freedom top and the last bit of off roadiness.

    As a taller (6' 2") driver, the big problem that I have noticed in newer vehicles is the lack of safe visibility out of the front windshield. They try to put the safety monitoring equipment in a black box at the top middle of the windshield.. And now Lexus made that black box even bigger.. see at (29:58).. Unfortunately, now the location of that black box (plus the rearview mirror itself) really hurts the drivers own ability to view out for safe driving. When it comes to safe driving, I trust my own eyes and vision much more than techie safety monitoring devices at the top middle part of the windshield. You would be surprised at how important that whole top middle part of the windshield is for good, safe driving visibility. They need to find another place on the vehicle to put safety monitoring devices so you can look out of the front windshield safely.

    • @howlingwolf125y

      @@RRr-yl8zr yea.. Like I mentioned .. I am about 6' 2".. Those eyesight monitoring box things and, yes, even the rear view mirror also block my eye sight. Trust me.. When you drive you need that area to see out for safe driving.. Espec. if you are over about 5' 9"..There are things like highway signs, road signs, house addresses, viewing land marks, etc.. etc.. and sometimes even traffic .. are blocked by that black safety monitor box and the rear view mirror. I think I trust my eyes MUCH more that the tech "safety monitor" equipment.. The better you can see out of the front windshield with your own eyes, the better you can drive safely - and it is also better for simple driving enjoyment. If auto companies want to force you to use safety monitoring equipment, fine, but find another place to put them so they don't block you own eye sight.

The last good-looking car they produced was the LFA. I am so glad they finally created a decent vehicle to look at. It even, dare I say, has personality. A revolutionary phrase in Lexus car design. Casually mentioning the G-Wagon at $120k, like you can find one at that price. Great review, would really love to own one of these in 5-10 years when I can afford one!

    I do most of my driving on pavement for work but we do go to the mountains often and our cabin has some treacherous roads , etc. Am I best with the other trims or does this Overtrail still drive smoothly on the highway? Unsure with those tires.

    8.9" is not much ground clearance...can a lift kit be added to the Overtrail+ without compromisiing the "adaptive variable suspension" system?

      You can lift KDSS equipped vehicles, just like the older GX's, but it's easier when they don't have KDSS. I wish there was non-KDSS Overtrail version.

    With the new 4R it is clear Toyota hedged on the LC250 for USA and when the LCs I see for sale are the same price as the GX overtrail we got issues. Same price and no E KDSS or TTV? Someone really has to love round headlights because the value isn’t there

    It looks like a reliable Defender. I appreciate this design better than every other GX they made prior to this model. They sharpened the grill and got rid of that gopping Baskin shark grill that made their cars some of the ugliest vehicles on the road. I also like that they kept the piano black plastic to a minimum.

    Want to see how it handles twisty mountain roads at a fun speed.
    Everything else about it seems really nice.
    Not that I can afford anything like it...

      It’s floaty and a boat. It’s not meant for handling. Topher showed its handling and wasn’t great. It’s an off road truck.

    If the drivetrain is as reliable as I hope this will be a real winner.
    Now how to round up 70K for one…..

    It would be nice for the Overtrail+ to come with real leather (Saddle Tan), 3rd row seating option, 3-zone climate controls, and heated middle bench seating. That would make it perfect.
